Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) provides a unique probe for neutrino properties Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. REactor neutrino LIquid xenon Coherent Scattering experiment (RELICS), a proposed reactor neutrino program using liquid xenon time projection chamber (LXeTPC) technology, aims to investigate the CEvNS process of antineutrinos off xenon atomic nuclei. In this work, the design of the experiment is studied and optimized based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. To achieve a sufficiently low energy threshold for CEvNS detection, an ionization-only analysis channel is adopted for RELICS. A high emission rate of delayed electrons after a big ionization signal is the major background, leading to an analysis threshold of 120 photo-electrons in the CEvNS search. The second largest background, nuclear recoils induced by cosmic-ray neutrons, is suppressed via a passive water shield. The physics potential of RELICS is explored with a 32 kg-yr exposure at a baseline of 25 m from a reactor core with a 3 GW thermal power. In an energy range of 120 to 240 PE, we expect 4902.4 CEvNS and 1318.4 background events. The sensitivity of RELICS to the weak mixing angle is investigated at a low momentum transfer. Our study shows that RELICS can further improve the constraints on the non-standard neutrino interaction (NSI) compared to the current best results.

Rare event search experiments using germanium detectors are operated in underground laboratories to minimize the background induced by cosmic rays. However, the cosmogenic activation in germanium crystals on the ground during fabrication and transportation generates long half-life radionuclides and contributes a considerable background. We simulated the production rates of cosmogenic radionuclides in germanium and calculated the specifi c activities of cosmogenic radionuclides according to the scheduled fabrication and transportation processes of $^{76}$Ge enriched germanium detectors. The impact of cosmogenic background in germanium crystals for the next generation CDEX experiment was assessed with the scheduled exposure history above ground.

Digital pathology based on whole slide images (WSIs) plays a key role in cancer diagnosis and clinical practice. Due to the high resolution of the WSI and the unavailability of patch-level annotations, WSI classification is usually formulated as a weakly supervised problem, which relies on multiple instance learning (MIL) based on patches of a WSI. In this paper, we aim to learn an optimal patch-level feature space by integrating prototype learning with MIL. To this end, we develop a Trainable Prototype enhanced deep MIL (TPMIL) framework for weakly supervised WSI classification. In contrast to the conventional methods which rely on a certain number of selected patches for feature space refinement, we softly cluster all the instances by allocating them to their corresponding prototypes. Additionally, our method is able to reveal the correlations between different tumor subtypes through distances between corresponding trained prototypes. More importantly, TPMIL also enables to provide a more accurate interpretability based on the distance of the instances from the trained prototypes which serves as an alternative to the conventional attention score-based interpretability. Recently, a lot of automated white blood cells (WBC) or leukocyte classification techniques have been developed. However, all of these methods only utilize a single modality microscopic image i.e. either blood smear or fluorescence based, thus missing the potential of a better learning from multimodal images. In this work, we develop an efficient multimodal architecture based on a first of its kind multimodal WBC dataset for the task of WBC classification. Specifically, our proposed idea is developed in two steps - 1) First, we learn modality specific independent subnetworks inside a single network only; 2) We further enhance the learning capability of the independent subnetworks by distilling knowledge from high complexity independent teacher networks. With this, our proposed framework can achieve a high performance while maintaining low complexity for a multimodal dataset. Our unique contribution is two-fold - 1) We present a first of its kind multimodal WBC dataset for WBC classification; 2) We develop a high performing multimodal architecture which is also efficient and low in complexity at the same time., Comment: Accepted to MICCAI 2022 workshop - MOVI2022

The ultralow detection threshold, ultralow intrinsic background, and excellent energy resolution of p-type point-contact germanium detector are important for rare-event searches, in particular for the detection of direct dark matter interactions, coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, and neutrinoless double beta decay. Anomalous bulk events with an extremely fast rise time are observed in the CDEX-1B detector. We report a method of extracting fast bulk events from bulk events using a pulse shape simulation and reconstructed source experiment signature. Calibration data and the distribution of X-rays generated by intrinsic radioactivity verified that the fast bulk experienced a single hit near the passivation layer. The performance of this germanium detector indicates that it is capable of single-hit bulk spatial resolution and thus provides a background removal technique., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures, submit to NST

We study the freeze-in production of Feebly Interacting Massive Particle (FIMP) dark matter candidates through a neutrino portal. We consider a hidden sector comprised of a fermion and a complex scalar, with the lightest one regarded as a FIMP candidate. We implement the Type-I Seesaw mechanism for generating the masses of the Standard Model (SM) neutrinos and consider three heavy neutrinos, responsible for mediating the interactions between the hidden and the SM sectors. We assume that an early matter-dominated era (EMDE) took place for some period between inflation and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, making the Universe to expand faster than in the standard radiation-dominated era. In this case, the hidden and SM sectors are easily decoupled and larger couplings between FIMPs and SM particles are needed from the relic density constraints. In this context, we discuss the dynamics of dark matter throughout the modified cosmic history, evaluate the relevant constraints of the model and discuss the consequences of the duration of the EMDE for the dark matter production. We propose to search for a boosted dark matter (DM) particle from astrophysical sources using an emulsion detector in deep underground facilities. We further propose using high-$Z$ material such as the lead for a larger DM-nucleus coherent scattering cross section above a threshold. The boosted DM will scatter into an excited DM. While the nuclear recoil energy is not detected, the decay products from the excited DM can be recorded by the proposed detector. Backgrounds such as the high energy solar neutrinos can be controlled by the reconstructed track topology. The proposed detector has the potential to find a boosted DM in the sub-GeV mass region, and in certain parameter space, an observation can be made while there is no sensitivity in other large-volume detectors such as Super-K.

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX), located at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) whose overburden is about 2400m rock, aims at direct searches of light Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). A single-element 994-gram p-type point contact (PPC) germanium detector (CDEX-1B) runs inside a solid passive shielding system. To achieve lower background, a prototype 10kg PPC germanium detector array (CDEX-10), consisting of three detector strings with three germanium crystals each, is directly immersed in the liquid nitrogen. With the energy threshold of 160eV, the limits on WIMP-nucleus scattering are set by energy spectra and annual modulation analysis, respectively. Incorporating Migdal effect, the data of CDEX-1B are re-analyzed to search sub-GeV WIMPs. We report the first result on Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. A mass of 994 g p-type point-contact high purity germanium detector has been installed to search the neutrinoless double beta decay events, as well as to directly detect dark matter particles. An exposure of 304 kg*day has been analyzed. The wideband spectrum from 500 keV to 3 MeV was obtained and the average event rate at the 2.039 MeV energy range is about 0.012 count per keV per kg per day. The half-life of Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay has been derived based on this result as: T 1/2 > 6.4*10^22 yr (90% C.L.). An upper limit on the effective Majorana-neutrino mass of 5.0 eV has been achieved.
