Abstract

Typha angustifolia L. (TA) pollen has been utilized as a traditional Chinese medicine for treating various internal and external traumas. Moreover, bioactive compounds possess diverse pharmacological activities. This study aims to evaluate the antiviral properties of TA based on its ability to generate bioenergy, capable of inhibiting viruses. TA pollens were extracted using water and ethanol solvents. These extracts were utilized to identify the phytochemical contents and correlate with the antioxidant activity via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. HPLC analysis was conducted to identify its electron-shuttling compositions. The bioenergy-generating characteristics were determined via microbial fuel cells. The water extract (TA-W) showed higher antioxidant activity due to a higher phenolic and flavonoid content compared to the ethanol extract (TA-E). Quercetin-3-O-(2G-α-L-rhamnosyl)-rutinoside, quercetin-3-O-neohesperidoside, and quercetin are the electron shuttles (ES) identified out of the 11 compounds. TA obtained a 1.39 ± 0.10 amplification factor of power generation that indicates potential bioenergy-generating and associated antiviral characteristic properties. The findings may provide a foundation for developing antiviral medications specifically designed to target virus-related diseases, while minimizing the risk of drug toxicity and reducing the costs of drug development. 31. Dual-Polarized Heterogeneous Stacked Patch Antenna With Stable Radiation Performance and High Efficiency

Abstract

In this letter, a ±45° dual-polarized heterogeneous stacked patch antenna with stable radiation performance and high efficiency is presented for the 5G massive multiple-input–multiple-output (M-MIMO) base station. It comprises a driven metallic patch (MP) and a parasitic dielectric patch (DP), which induce low- and high-frequency resonant modes, respectively. The excitation of the top DP is achieved by the bottom MP through four supporting dielectric blocks between them, which allow for surface-mounted technology installation of the DP. Furthermore, the utilization of DP for generating high-frequency mode enables the heterogeneous antenna to have an efficiency of >90% in a bandwidth (|S11| < −15 dB) of 14.1% (3.3 GHz to 3.8 GHz). The off-center configuration of the four dielectric blocks increases the equivalent dielectric constant of the sidewall of the heterogeneous radiator, resulting in stable radiation patterns. The variations of realized gain and half-power beamwidth are below 0.3 dBi and 5°, respectively.

40. Compact Broadband Filtering Differential Dielectric Resonator Antenna for Dual-Polarized Applications

Abstract

A dual-polarized compact broadband filtering differential dielectric resonator antenna (DDRA) is proposed. For each polarization, an electric dipole is loaded on the symmetric plane of the dielectric resonator (DR) and utilized to excite the DR, which further stimulates an upper dielectric patch (DP). Three differential resonances, the half-wavelength resonance of the dipole, $\mathop {\mathbf{TE}}\nolimits_{\mathbf{111}}^y $ ($\mathop {\mathbf{TE}}\nolimits_{\mathbf{111}}^x $) mode of the DR, and quasi-$\mathop {\mathbf{TE}}\nolimits_{\mathbf{121}}^z $ (quasi-$\mathop {\mathbf{TE}}\nolimits_{\mathbf{211}}^z $) mode of the DP, are introduced into the operating band, respectively. The DP also improves the coupling degree of these resonances to obtain a broadband and flat-gain performance with high radiation efficiency. Furthermore, two radiation nulls at band edges are obtained without extra filtering circuits. The orthogonality of the degenerate modes enables dual-polarization for the design. A prototype is designed and implemented for verification.

Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the potential nephroprotective effects of a traditional Chinese medical prescription, Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi Decoction (BZYQD) in an aristolochic acid (AA)-intoxicated zebrafish model. Methods: A green fluorescent zebrafish line Tg (wt1b:EGFP) was used, and different exposure protocols were applied. Once a suitable protective concentration of BZYQD was found, antibody staining and real-time PCR methods were applied and the pro-inflammatory gene expressions were determined. Results: The results showed that low dose (10 ppm) of BZYQD attenuates the AA-induced malformed kidney phenotype. This finding was further substantiated by an examination of the integrity of pronephric tubes in the treated embryos. Pre-treatment with BZYQD suppressed the elevated expressions of pro- inflammatory genes, including tumor necrosis factor-α and myeloperoxidase, induced by AA exposure (1.6 ~ 2.3-fold). This indicates that the nephroprotective effect of BZYQD may be mediated by suppression of pro-inflammatory gene expression. On the other hand, a high dose (500 ppm) of BZYQD caused nephrotoxic effect. Conclusion: An efficient model to identify AA-protective compounds using zebrafish embryos has been successfully established. Using this strategy, it has been found that BZYQD is nephroprotective in zebrafish embryos, and might have the potential to be applied in humans.
