1. Intercomparison of snow water equivalent products in the Sierra Nevada California using airborne snow observatory data and ground observations

Abstract

Whereas many independent methods are used to estimate snow water equivalent (SWE) and its spatial distribution and seasonal variability, a need exists for a systematic characterization of inter-model differences at annual, seasonal, and regional scales necessary to quantify the associated uncertainty in these datasets. This study conducts a multi-scale validation and comparison, based on Airborne Snow Observatory data, of five state-of-the-art SWE datasets in the Sierra Nevada, California, including three SWE datasets from retrospective models: an INiTial REConstruction model (REC-INT), an improved REConstruction model based on the ParBal energy balance model (REC-ParBal), and a Sierra Nevada SWE REConstruction with Data Assimilation (REC-DA), and two operational SWE datasets from the U.S. National Weather Service, including the Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS) and the National Water Model (NWM-SWE). The results show that REC-DA and REC-ParBal provide the two most accurate estimates of SWE in the snowmelt season, both with small positive biases. REC-DA provides the most accurate spatial distribution of SWE (R2 = 0.87, MAE = 66 mm, PBIAS = 8.3%) at the pixel scale, while REC-ParBal has the least basin-wide PBIAS (R2 = 0.79, MAE = 73 mm, PBIAS = 4.1%) in the snowmelt season. Moreover, REC-DA underestimates peak SWE by −5.8%, while REC-ParBal overestimates it by 7.5%, when compared with the measured peak SWE at snow pillow stations across the Sierra Nevada. The two operational SWE products—SNODAS and NWM-SWE—are less accurate. Furthermore, the inter-model comparison reveals a certain amount of disagreement in snow water storage across time and space between SWE datasets. This study advances our understanding of regional SWE uncertainties and provides critical insights to support future applications of these SWE data products and therefore has broad implications for water resources management and hydrological process studies.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel meta-learning method in a reinforcement learning setting, based on evolution strategies (ES), exploration in parameter space and deterministic policy gradients. ES methods are easy to parallelize, which is desirable for modern training architectures; however, such methods typically require a huge number of samples for effective training. We use deterministic policy gradients during adaptation and other techniques to compensate for the sample-efficiency problem while maintaining the inherent scalability of ES methods. We demonstrate that our method achieves good results compared to gradient-based meta-learning in high-dimensional control tasks in the MuJoCo simulator. In addition, because of gradient-free methods in the meta-training phase, which do not need information about gradients and policies in adaptation training, we predict and confirm our algorithm performs better in tasks that need multi-step adaptation.

13. Leveraging ICESat, ICESat‐2, and Landsat for Global‐Scale, Multi‐Decadal Reconstruction of Lake Water Levels.

Abstract

Lakes provide important water resources and many essential ecosystem services. Some of Earth's largest lakes recently reached record‐low levels, suggesting increasing threats from climate change and anthropogenic activities. Yet, continuous monitoring of lake levels is challenging at a global scale due to the sparse in situ gauging network and the limited spatial or temporal coverage of satellite altimeters. A few pioneering studies used water areas and hypsometric curves to reconstruct water levels but suffered from large uncertainties due to the lack of high‐quality hypsometry data. Here, we propose a novel proxy‐based method to reconstruct multi‐decadal water levels from 1992 to 2018 for both large and small lakes using Landsat images and ICESat (2003–2009) and recently launched ICESat‐2 (2018+) laser altimeters. Using the new method, we evaluate reconstructed levels of 342 lakes worldwide, with sizes ranging from 1 to 81,844 km2. Reconstructed water levels have a median root‐mean‐square error (RMSE) of 0.66 m, equivalent to 57% of the standard deviation of monthly level variability. Compared with two recently reconstructed water level data sets, the proposed method reduces the median RMSE by 27%–32%. The improvement is attributable to the new method's robust construction of high‐quality hypsometry, with a median R2 value of 0.92. Most reconstructed water level time series have a bi‐monthly or higher frequency. Given that ICESat‐2 and Landsat can observe hundreds of thousands of water bodies, this method can be applied to conduct an improved global inventory of time‐varying lake levels and thus inform water resource management more broadly than existing methods. 14. Joint Overlapping Event Extraction Model via Role Pre-Judgment with Trigger and Context Embeddings.

Abstract

The objective of event extraction is to recognize event triggers and event categories within unstructured text and produce structured event arguments. However, there is a common phenomenon of triggers and arguments of different event types in a sentence that may be the same word elements, which poses new challenges to this task. In this article, a joint learning framework for overlapping event extraction (ROPEE) is proposed. In this framework, a role pre-judgment module is devised prior to argument extraction. It conducts role pre-judgment by leveraging the correlation between event types and roles, as well as trigger embeddings. Experiments on the FewFC show that the proposed model outperforms other baseline models in terms of Trigger Classification, Argument Identification, and Argument Classification by 0.4%, 0.9%, and 0.6%. In scenarios of trigger overlap and argument overlap, the proposed model outperforms the baseline models in terms of Argument Identification and Argument Classification by 0.9%, 1.2%, 0.7%, and 0.6%, respectively, indicating the effectiveness of ROPEE in solving overlapping events. 20. New evidence concerning the genome designations of the AC(DC) tetraploid Avena species

Abstract

The tetraploid Avena species in the section Pachycarpa Baum, including A. insularis, A. maroccana, and A. murphyi, are thought to be involved in the evolution of hexaploid oats; however, their genome designations are still being debated. Repetitive DNA sequences play an important role in genome structuring and evolution, so understanding the chromosomal organization and distribution of these sequences in Avena species could provide valuable information concerning genome evolution in this genus. In this study, the chromosomal organizations and distributions of six repetitive DNA sequences (including three SSR motifs (TTC, AAC, CAG), one 5S rRNA gene fragment, and two oat A and C genome specific repeats) were investigated using non-denaturing fluorescence in situ hybridization (ND-FISH) in the three tetraploid species mentioned above and in two hexaploid oat species. Preferential distribution of the SSRs in centromeric regions was seen in the A and D genomes, whereas few signals were detected in the C genomes. Some intergenomic translocations were observed in the tetraploids; such translocations were also detected between the C and D genomes in the hexaploids. These results provide robust evidence for the presence of the D genome in all three tetraploids, strongly suggesting that the genomic constitution of these species is DC and not AC, as had been thought previously.

Abstract

It is an extremely important task to detect and repair the magnetic conductivity walls of large tanks, steel bridges, ship walls and aircraft exterior surfaces in the industrial field. This kind of task is usually carried out in extremely complex environment, which has the characteristics of high labor intensity and dangerous operation. Thus, there is a great demand for robot assistance. The paper describes a kind of corporation robot system, which use a Linux based computer with a camera as upper computer and a Magnetic caterpillar car robot with Arduino inside. With pixel to real distance calculation, upper computer is able to find the path and correctly guide the robot. The combination of magnetic wall climbing robot and upper-computer system can greatly improve the safety and efficiency of engineering operations. In addition, this paper analyses the motion system and the computer system in detail. The result shows that the whole system has the ability to adapt many kinds of magnetic conducting surface, and is able to expand easily.

Abstract

Water cups are essential for our everyday life. But for ordinary water cups, people can't know the water temperature and water volume in the cup, and they can't know exactly whether they drink enough water every day. Also, they can't be reminded to drink water when they are busy. Therefore, this paper designs a multi-functional intelligent water cup system based on STM32, which aims to make people develop good drinking habits. In this system, the microcontroller can control the temperature sensor and the pressure sensor to measure water temperature and water volume in real time. The water temperature error does not exceed ±0.5°C. The user can set the water temperature and drinking time in advance on the LCD by touching the key to remind the user to drink water by a voice module. Also, by means of Bluetooth module, the user can obtain information such as water temperature and water volume through the mobile phone APP. The lithium battery built into the cup can power the microcontroller and each module. This system can successfully realize the function after debugging, and can well solve people's drinking water problem. Compared with the ordinary water cup, the system has high cost performance and has broad prospects.

Abstract

There is a large community of people with hand disabilities, and these disabilities can be a barrier to those looking to retain or pursue surgical careers. With the development of surgical robotics technologies, it may be possible to develop user interfaces to accommodate these individuals. This paper proposes a hand-free control method for the gripper of a patient side manipulator (PSM) in the da Vinci surgical system. Using electromyography (EMG) signals, a proportional control method was tested on its ability to grasp a pressure sensor. These preliminary results demonstrate that the user can reliably control the grasping motion of the da Vinci PSM using this system. There is a strong correlation between grasping force and normalized EMG signal (r= 0.874). Moreover, the gripper can generate a step grasping force output when feeding in a generated step signal. The results in this paper demonstrate the system integration of a research EMG system with the da Vinci surgical system and are a step towards developing accessible teleoperation systems for surgeons with disabilities. Hand-free control for remaining degrees of freedom in the PSM is under development using additional input from the motion capture system.
