Developing ecological approaches for disease control is critical for future sustainable aquaculture development. White spot syndrome (WSS), caused by white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), is the most severe disease in cultured shrimp production. Culturing specific pathogen-free (SPF) broodstock is an effective and widely used strategy for controlling WSS. However, most small-scale farmers, who predominate shrimp aquaculture in developing countries, cannot cultivate SPF shrimp, as they do not have the required infrastructure and skills. Thus, these producers are more vulnerable to WSS outbreaks than industrial farms. Here we developed a shrimp polyculture system that prevents WSS outbreaks by introducing specific fish species. The system is easy to implement and requires no special biosecurity measures. The promotion of this system in China demonstrated that it allowed small-scale farmers to improve their livelihood through shrimp cultivation by controlling WSS outbreaks and increasing the production of ponds.

AbstractDue to the limited understanding of the characteristics of predator-pathogen-prey interactions, few attempts to use selective predation for controlling diseases in prey populations have been successful. The global pandemic of white spot syndrome (WSS), caused by white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), causes devastating economic losses in farmed shrimp production. Currently, there is no effective control for WSS. Here, we determined the transmission dynamics of WSSV and the feeding ability and selectivity of fish on healthy, infected and dead shrimp by experiments and mathematical modeling. Accordingly, we developed a novel and convenient shrimp cultural ecosystem, which that effectively prevented WSS outbreaks, by introducing aquaculture fish species. This provides a scheme for developing control strategies for viral diseases with high transmission rate.

We conducted a comprehensive investigation on the influence of TiN thickness and stress on the ferroelectric properties of Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 thin films. TiN top electrode layers with varying thicknesses of 2, 5, 10, 30, 50, 75, and 100 nm were deposited and analyzed. It was observed that the in-plane tensile stress in TiN films increased with the thickness of the TiN top electrode. This is expected to elevate the tensile stress in the Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 film, consequently leading to an enhancement in ferroelectric polarization. However, the effect of stress on the ferroelectric behavior of Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 films exhibited distinct stages: improvement, saturation, and degradation. Our study presents novel findings revealing a saturation and degradation phenomenon of in-plane tensile stress on the ferroelectric properties of polycrystalline Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 films, thereby partially resolving the discrepancies between experimental observations and theoretical predictions. The observed phase transformation induced by tensile stress in Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 films played a crucial role in these effects. Furthermore, we found that the impact of the TiN top electrode thickness on other factors influencing ferroelectricity, such as grain size and oxygen vacancies, was negligible. These comprehensive results offer valuable insights into the influence of stress and TiN top electrode thickness on the ferroelectric behavior of Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of lightweight composites with desirable thermo‐mechanical properties is progressively increasing. Phthalonitrile (PN) based composites have shown great potential in this regard. However, the basic thermal properties of PN composites required for engineering design are not yet fully understood. In this work, we investigated the thermal stability, thermal expansion behavior and thermal conductivity of PN composites reinforced with carbon fiber (CF) and high silicon fiberglass (HSF) via combined experimental studies and numerical simulations. The results indicated that CF/PN performs better in thermostability than HSF/PN at temperatures below 500°C. Moreover, the incorporation of CF and HSF lowered the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal insulation of PN. At room temperature, the in‐plane CTE of CF/PN and HSF/PN were 1.97E‐6 and 9.24E‐6°C−1, respectively, while the out‐plane thermal conductivities of CF/PN and HSF/PN were 0.65 and 0.34 W/(m K). It is worth noting that an excessively high fiber volume fraction would lead to poor thermal insulation and lightweight properties of the PN composites, while a low fiber volume fraction would result in poor stiffness and thermal dimensional stability. Determined via TOPSIS model, a fiber volume fraction range of 50%–60% was ideal for both composites with comprehensive optimal properties, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
