Submerged flapping foils can convert wave energy directly into thrust, which could be potentially utilised for green marine propulsion. This study analyses the wave-induced flapping hydrofoil propulsion using an in-house developed, new computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework. The numerical model was initially validated against a few benchmarked problems and then used for the numerical investigation of wave-induced flapping hydrofoil propulsion. The transition between drag and thrust can be observed from the vortex flow pattern. The pitch stiffness and other physical parameter were non-dimensionalised for the first time. The optimal wave conditions and the optimal pitch stiffness are given for the future green marine system design.

Hydrides offer an opportunity to study high-temperature (Tc) superconductivity at experimentally achievable pressures. However, they remained extremely high. Using density functional theory calculations, herein we demonstrated that a newly rare earth hydride, namely bulk ErH2, could be superconducting with a Tc around 80 K at 14.5 GPa. To date, the drived pressure is the lowest reported value for compressed hydrides. Besides superconductivity, Fermi Surface nesting and Kondo effect were manifested at this pressure. Intriguingly, due to Kondo destruction, superconductivity was prone to exist at 15 GPa. Under the rest of applied pressures, we also revealed a gap of band structure at 20 GPa on the background of normal metallic states. At 20 GPa, this compressed system could act as a host of superconductor being judged from a sharp jump of spontaneous magnetic susceptibility with an evanescent spin density of state at Fermi level along with the competition between spin density wave and superconductivity. Finally, electron pairing glue for ErH2 at these three typical pressures was attributed to the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation.

Comparing with the widely known transitional metal based van der Waals (vdW) materials, rare-earth based ones are rarely explored in the research of intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. In this work, we report the physical properties of DyOCl, a rare-earth based vdW magnetic insulator with direct band gap of $\sim 5.72~eV$. The magnetic order of bulk DyOCl is determined by neutron scattering as the $A$-type antiferromagnetic structure below the N\'{e}el temperature $T_N=10~$K. The large magnetic moment near 10.1 $ \mu_{B} $/Dy lies parallel to the $a$-axis with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. At $2~K$, a moderate magnetic field ($\sim 2~T$) applied along the easy axis generates spin-flip transitions and polarizes DyOCl to a ferromagnetic state. Density functional theory calculations reveal an extremely large magnetic anisotropy energy ($-5850~\mu eV/Dy$) for DyOCl, indicating the great potentials to realize magnetism in 2D limit. Furthermore, the mechanical exfoliation of bulk DyOCl single crystals down to seven layers is demonstrated. Our findings suggest DyOCl is a promising material playground to investigate 2D $f$-electron magnetism and spintronic applications at the nanoscale.

A new algorithm is presented for simulating volume-controlled invasion of a non-wetting phase into voxel images. This method is complementary to the traditional morphological image opening method which mimics pressure-based invasion. A key advantage of the volume-based approach is that all saturations between 0 and 1 can obtained rather than the irregularly and widely spaced saturation steps obtained by pressure-based methods. Because of the incremental increases in saturation, it becomes possible to correctly predict defending phase trapping, which is not the case when pressure-based steps are applied. The algorithm is validated against morphological image opening and obtains near perfect agreement at equal saturations as expected from theory. It is also demonstrated that a volume-controlled capillary pressure curve can be obtained that displays the characteristic jumps in capillary pressure, and moreover, the envelop of peak pressures yields the pressure-based capillary pressure obtained by morphological opening, so in fact the results of the proposed algorithm are a superset of the morphological approach. Finally, results are compared to multiphase lattice Boltzmann and qualitatively similar results were achieved in substantially less time. The lattice Boltzmann method is more flexible in terms of variable contact angle and inclusion of viscous effects, but for quasi-static volume-based injection of a non-wetting fluid, the proposed method is viable alternative.

The electronic and thermal transport properties have been systematically investigated in monolayer C$_4$N$_3$H with first-principles calculations. The intrinsic thermal conductivity of monolayer C$_4$N$_3$H was calculated coupling with phonons Boltzmann transport equation. For monolayer C$_4$N$_3$H, the thermal conductivity (\k{appa}) (175.74 and 157.90 W m-1K-1 with a and b-plane, respectively) is significantly lower than that of graphene (3500 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$) and C3N(380 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$). Moreover, it is more than the second time higher than C$_2$N (82.88 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$) at 300 K. Furthermore, the group velocities, relax time, anharmonicity, as well as the contribution from different phonon branches, were thoroughly discussed in detail. A comparison of the thermal transport characters among 2D structure for monolayer C$_4$N$_3$H, graphene, C$_2$N and C$_3$N has been discussed.
