Abstract

Chirality is essential for various amazing phenomena in life and matter. However,chirality and its switching in electronic superlattices, such as charge density wave(CDW) arrays, remain elusive. In this study, we characterize the chirality transition with atom-resolution imaging in a single-layer NbSe2 CDW pattern by technique of scanning tunneling microscopy. The atomic lattice of the CDW array is found continuous and intact although its chirality is switched. Several intermediate states are tracked by time-resolved imaging, revealing the fast and dynamic chirality transition. Importantly, the switching is reversibly realized with an external electric-field. Our findings unveil the delicate transition process of chiral CDW array in a 2D crystal down to the atomic scale and may be applicable for future nanoscale devices.

Abstract

We urgently need answers to basic epidemiological questions regarding SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant and postpartum women and its effect on their newborns. While many national registries, health facilities, and research groups are collecting relevant data, we need a collaborative and methodologically rigorous approach to better combine these data and address knowledge gaps, especially those related to rare outcomes. We propose that using a sequential, prospective meta-analysis (PMA) is the best approach to generate data for policy- and practice-oriented guidelines. As the pandemic evolves, additional studies identified retrospectively by the steering committee or through living systematic reviews will be invited to participate in this PMA. Investigators can contribute to the PMA by either submitting individual patient data or running standardized code to generate aggregate data estimates. For the primary analysis, we will pool data using two-stage meta-analysis methods. The meta-analyses will be updated as additional data accrue in each contributing study and as additional studies meet study-specific time or data accrual thresholds for sharing. At the time of publication, investigators of 25 studies, including more than 76,000 pregnancies, in 41 countries had agreed to share data for this analysis. Among the included studies, 12 have a contemporaneous comparison group of pregnancies without COVID-19, and four studies include a comparison group of non-pregnant women of reproductive age with COVID-19. Protocols and updates will be maintained publicly. Results will be shared with key stakeholders, including the World Health Organization (WHO) Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (MNCAH) Research Working Group. Data contributors will share results with local stakeholders. Scientific publications will be published in open-access journals on an ongoing basis.

Abstract

Two-dimensional topological insulator features time-reversal-invariant spin-momentum-locked one-dimensional (1D) edge states with a linear energy dispersion. However, experimental access to 1D edge states is still of great challenge and only limited to few techniques to date. Here, by using infrared absorption spectroscopy, we observed robust topologically originated edge states in a-Bi4Br4 belts with definitive signature of strong infrared absorption at belt sides and distinct anisotropy with respect to light polarizations, which is further supported by first-principles calculations. Our work demonstrates for the first time that the infrared spectroscopy can offer a power-efficient approach in experimentally probing 1D edge states of topological materials., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 29 references

Abstract

In this study, we investigated the surface-confined coupling reactions of 1,8-dibromobiphenylene (BPBr2) on Cu(111) to elucidate the details of the organometallic intermediates via Ullmann reactions. We used scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to characterize the resulting organometallic intermediates. Moreover, submolecular resolution of the non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) qPlus technique enables the bond-resolving within the organometallic dimer product. Our findings reveal the debromination of BPBr2 on Cu(111), leading to the formation of an organometallic dimer intermediate at room temperature. Through nc-AFM measurements, we confirm and visualize the formation of the C-Cu-C bond. These insights enhance our understanding of Ullmann reaction and hold potential implications for the design of novel two-dimensional electronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Nanoscale Visualization of Symmetry-Breaking Electronic Orders and Magnetic Anisotropy in a Kagome Magnet YMn6Sn6

Abstract

A kagome lattice hosts a plethora of quantum states arising from the interplay between nontrivial topology and electron correlations. The recently discovered kagome magnet RMn6Sn6(R represents a rare-earth element) is believed to showcase a kagome band closely resembling textbook characteristics. Here, we report the characterization of local electronic states and their magnetization response in YMn6Sn6via scanning tunneling microscopy measurements under vector magnetic fields. Our spectroscopic maps reveal a spontaneously trimerized kagome electronic order in YMn6Sn6, where the 6-fold rotational symmetry is disrupted while translational symmetry is maintained. Further application of an external magnetic field demonstrates a strong coupling of the YMn6Sn6kagome band to the field, which exhibits an energy shift discrepancy under different field directions, implying the existence of magnetization-response anisotropy and anomalous gfactors. Our findings establish YMn6Sn6as an ideal platform for investigating kagome-derived orbital magnetic moment and correlated magnetic topological states.

Abstract

Kagome lattice AV3Sb5has attracted tremendous interest because it hosts correlated and topological physics. However, an in-depth understanding of the temperature-driven electronic states in AV3Sb5is elusive. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to directly capture the rotational symmetry-breaking effect in KV3Sb5. Through both topography and spectroscopic imaging of defect-free KV3Sb5, we observe a charge density wave (CDW) phase transition from an a0× a0atomic lattice to a robust 2a0× 2a0superlattice upon cooling the sample to 60 K. An individual Sb-atom vacancy in KV3Sb5further gives rise to the local Friedel oscillation (FO), visible as periodic charge modulations in spectroscopic maps. The rotational symmetry of the FO tends to break at the temperature lower than 40 K. Moreover, the FO intensity shows an obvious competition against the intensity of the CDW. Our results reveal a tantalizing electronic nematicity in KV3Sb5, highlighting the multiorbital correlation in the kagome lattice framework.
