Abstract

Battery design efforts often prioritize enhancing the energy density of the active materials and their utilization. However, optimizing thermal management systems at both the cell and pack levels is also key to achieving mission-relevant battery design. Battery thermal management systems, responsible for managing the thermal profile of battery cells, are crucial for balancing the trade-offs between battery performance and lifetime. Designing such systems requires accounting for the multitude of heat sources within battery cells and packs. This paper provides a summary of heat generation characterizations observed in several commercial Li-ion battery cells using isothermal battery calorimetry. The primary focus is on assessing the impact of temperatures, C-rates, and formation cycles. Moreover, a module-level characterization demonstrated the significant additional heat generated by module interconnects. Characterizing heat signatures at each level helps inform manufacturing at the design, production, and characterization phases that might otherwise go unaccounted for at the full pack level. Further testing of a 5 kWh battery pack revealed that a considerable temperature non-uniformity may arise due to inefficient cooling arrangements. To mitigate this type of challenge, a combined thermal characterization and multi-domain modeling approach is proposed, offering a solution without the need for constructing a costly module prototype. Abstract

In July 2011, the Advanced Vehicle Power and Technology (AVPT) Alliance was announced as a partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Army (DA) to explore solutions for decreasing petroleum dependence, increasing fuel efficiency and enhancing the nation's energy security infrastructure. The AVPT Alliance examines areas of interest that could serve as common ground for collaboration between DA and DOE, including: advanced combustion engines, lightweight materials, energy recovery, alternative fuels, analytical tools, and hybrid propulsion systems including batteries. The Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and DOE's Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) are collaborating as part of this partnership. VTO has been supporting development of software design tools for accelerating development of batteries for electric drive vehicles for civilian applications under the Computer Aided Engineering of Batteries (CAEBAT) project. Extending the CAEBAT tools for vehicles in military applications was chosen as one the areas for collaboration between VTO and TARDEC under the AVPT partnership., Prepared in cooperation with Advanced Engineering Solution, Castle Rock, CO. 32. Wake-Fin Tailoring for Projectile Steering

Abstract

The overall goal of this dissertation is to investigate an active flow control concept, called wake-fin tailoring (WaFT), for improving the steering performance and attitude control of projectiles. The concept is based on the use of mechanical flow control actuators located at a position well upstream of the projectile’s tail. With an asymmetric deployment of the actuators, the system induces an asymmetric wake-flow that interacts with the tail fins to generate aerodynamic control forces and moments. The system can be used to provide in-flight adjustment capability, reduce dispersion and increase endgame maneuver footprint of the projectiles.The investigation results in the following:1. Proof-of-concept experiments and computational simulations were conducted to investigate the feasibility of the proposed method. Low-speed wind tunnel experiments were performed on a representative surrogate tank munitions (STM) model. Effects of actuator parameters such as shape, locations (axis and azimuth), and actuator size were examined. Based on the results, the best control configuration was identified.2. Steady CFD modelings of the projectile were carried out at subsonic and supersonic speeds to investigate the flow control mechanism and determine the control performance at operational flight speeds. 3. Unsteady CFD simulations were performed to evaluate the performance of WaFT during dynamic events including spinning motion and dynamic deployment of actuators.Results from wind tunnel experiments and CFD simulations demonstrate effective generations of control forces and moments by the WaFT system. The overall control authority is derived from two effects. First, a deployed actuator modifies the local surface pressure resulting in a local force. Second, the wake of the actuator interacts with the tail-fins downstream to change the pressure distributions on the fins. As a result, the control authority is enhanced compared to either effect alone. Additionally, a wide control bandwidth and a small drag penalty are expected due to the small size of the actuator.
