Runoff depth distribution on the concave and circular curve sections is obtained from a two-dimensional numerical simulating model in order to analyze the temporal and spatial variation of the pavement runoff on the curve section. The two-dimensional model verified by the field data can depict the alignment of pavement more accurately as compared to the empirical equation and a one-dimensional model. The runoff on the concave section and circular curve section is compared for the free water drainage and centerline drainage. Results show that a two-dimensional model is essential for the analysis of the centerline drainage. The runoff depth can be controlled by a reasonable curb height and location interval. The drainage type affects the variation of the runoff depth on the nearside lane, and the maximum water depth can be up to more than 80 mm on the concave section and nearly 60 mm on the circular curve section under centerline drainage. Besides the existing hydroplaning results, the runoff depth difference of the wheel trace should be considered to evaluate driving safety. Sideslip will occur when the depth difference becomes more than 6 mm under condition that the runoff depth is less than the tread depth (7 mm). When the runoff depth is more than the tread depth, sideslip will occur once the depth difference exceeds 4 mm.

The purpose of this paper is to report on the drainage of porous asphalt pavement evaluation method suited for use in analyzing clogging effect. To preliminarily reveal the decrease in permeability caused by clogging of permeable asphalt pavement, an innovative device was proposed to evaluate the anisotropy of permeability influenced by clogging, and the maximum drainage capacity without surface ponding can be obtained when the supplied water was controlled. Then, finite element models for asphalt pavements with hydromechanical coupling were proposed based on porous media theory and Biot’s theory. The variation in pore water pressure was simulated by considering the decrease in voids and the increase in clogging grains. The results indicate that the internally retained water should not be ignored because the semiconnected voids were filled with water rapidly at the beginning of permeability tests. To avoid surface ponding, the drainage capacity coefficient (DCC) can be used to evaluate the maximum drainage capacity (MDC) influenced by clogging. Moreover, the pore water pressure increased due to the reduction in voids and a high level of clogging. In addition, the peak value of pore water pressure is also affected by the upper-layer height of the pavement. Under the action of clogging and driving load, a reasonable thickness of the upper layer and a drainage evaluation should be considered to improve road safety.

Hemoglobin (Hb) Q-Thailand, Hb E, and other forms of thalassemia are prevalent in Southeast Asia including China. We report a hitherto undescribed condition in which four forms of Hb defects co-segregate. The proband was a 20-year-old Chinese man who presented with moderate hypochromic microcytosis with Hb 73 g/l, hematocrit (Hct) 27.0%, mean corpuscular volume 57.6 fl, mean corpuscular hemoglobin 15.5 pg, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) 268.0 g/l. Both Hb electrophoresis and high-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed abnormal Hbs. DNA analysis demonstrated that the proband was a double heterozygote of Hb Q-Thailand and Hb E in combination with α0-thalassemia and Southeast Asian-type hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (SEA-HPFH). Family study identified that her father was a double heterozygote for Hb Q-Thailand and Hb E, whereas her mother was a heterozygote for SEA-HPFH with α0-thalassemia. Moreover, his brother was a classical Hb QH disease patient. The genotype–phenotype relationship observed in this Chinese family with complex thalassemia syndromes is presented. The simulation accuracy of urban flood models is affected by independent variables describing terrain resolution and artificial land cover. An evaluation of these effects could provide suggestions for the improvement of simulation accuracy when the available terrain resolutions and representation methods of land cover are different. This paper focused on exploring and evaluating these effects on simulation accuracy using two indicators, relative depth accuracy (RDA) and relative area accuracy (RAA). The study area was the Nanjing Jianye district in China, which has experienced extensive urbanization. Designed rainfall (2 and 10 year return periods) and three terrain resolutions (17, 35, and 70 m) were used in this paper. Building blocks (BB), road drainage (RD), and a combination of both (BB + RD) were compared to present the effect of artificial land cover. Real flood events were initially simulated as a model verification case, and hypothetic modeling scenarios were simulated to evaluate the effects of different resolutions and representation methods. The results indicate that the effect of terrain resolutions on simulation accuracy was more obvious than that of artificial land cover in the study area. In this paper, 20–30% higher accuracy could be achieved in the 35 m resolution model with respect to the 70 m resolution model. A relative accuracy of 94% was achieved in the 17 m resolution model when using the BB method, which was 5% higher than that using the RD method. This paper shows that evaluating the effects of terrain resolution and artificial land cover is effective and helpful for improving the simulation accuracy of urban flood models in extensively urbanized districts.
