Abstract In response to the challenge of telomere attrition during DNA replication, cancer cells predominantly employ telomerase or, in 10–15% of cases, the alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT). The intricate details of ALT, however, remain elusive. In this study, we unveil that the knockdown of lamina-associated polypeptide 2 alpha (LAP2α) in ALT cells results in telomere dysfunction, triggering a notable increase in ALT-associated hallmarks, including high frequencies of PML bodies (APBs), C-rich extrachromosomal circles (C-circles), and telomere sister chromatid exchange (T-SCE). Furthermore, LAP2α emerges as a crucial player in break-induced telomere replication for telomerase-positive cells following telomeric double-strand breaks. Mechanistically, our investigation suggests that LAP2α may influence the regulation of the heterochromatic state of telomeres, thereby affecting telomeric accessibility. In line with our findings, LAP2α expression is markedly reduced in ALT-positive osteosarcoma. And the use of methotrexate (MTX) can restore the heterochromatin state altered by LAP2α depletion. This is evidenced by a significant inhibition of tumor proliferation in ALT-positive patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse models. These results indicate the important role of LAP2α in regulating ALT activity and offer insights into the interplay between lamina-associated proteins and telomeres in maintaining telomere length. Importantly, our findings may help identify a more appropriate target population for the osteosarcoma therapeutic drug, MTX.

Polyurethane concrete has excellent mechanical properties, rapid solidification and durability, but brittle damage is easy to occur at room temperature. To solve the problem of insufficient bending toughness of polyurethane concrete, steel fibers were added into the traditional polyurethane concrete to prepare steel fiber polyurethane concrete in this paper. A total of 8 test beams with dimensions of 150 mm × 150 mm × 550 mm were made. The influence of steel fibers with different length-diameter ratios and volume ratios on the flexural strength of polyurethane concrete was studied through four points bending tests. The results show that under the same volume ratio and diameter, as the length of steel fiber increases from 30 mm to 60 mm, the peak load decreased by 8.6%, and the displacement corresponding to the peak load decreased by 41.1%. Under the same length-diameter ratio, the steel fiber volume ratio from 0.5% to 2.0%, the peak load increased by 49.1%, and the displacement corresponding to the peak load increased by 100.8%. The toughening degree, relative initial flexural toughness ratio and relative residual flexural toughness ratio were proposed, and the inconsistencies of calculation criteria for flexural toughness in steel fiber reinforced concrete (JG/T 472–2015) were optimized.

Traditional warm-mix asphalt (WMA) faces challenges in reducing mixing temperatures to achieve lower energy consumption. To address this challenge and meet global environmental goals, this study designs various composite warm-mix additives using commonly used additives and their optimal dosages. The viscosity reduction mechanisms of asphalt and asphalt mixtures are examined using viscosity–temperature and air voids-temperature curves. Regression equations for viscosity and voids as a function of temperature are developed to determine the optimal mixing temperature of WMA. The study integrates thermodynamic equilibrium equations with field data to quantify the energy consumption in producing composite WMA mixtures. The results reveal that WMA significantly reduces mixing temperatures, making it suitable for low-energy asphalt mixtures. The use of various composite additives enhances the mechanical properties of asphalt pavements. Optimal mixing temperatures are set as 60–100 °C for WMA in warm-paving applications, and 20–60 °C for WMA in cold-paving applications. Viscosity ranges from 0.17 to 0.28 Pa s, with air voids varying from 6% to 7% for WMA in warm-paving applications and 8%–9% for WMA in cold-paving applications. Controlling the mixing temperature improves energy-saving efficiency, achieving reductions from 47.1 % to 97.6 %. The study recommends the use of WMA (Sasobit/Evotherm/DAT) for warm-paving applications and WMA (Sasobit/Diesel oil) for cold-paving applications. This study provides valuable insights for developing energy-efficient and high-performance asphalt pavements.

The dc-link voltage oscillation caused by the negative impedance characteristic of the constant power load is a significant issue in the series LC branch-permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) cascade system. To this end, this paper proposes a voltage prediction compensation (VPC) strategy to suppress the dc-link voltage oscillation by adding a voltage stability constraint term to the finite control set model predictive current control (FCS-MPCC). First, the linearized q-axis reference voltage is obtained by taking the derivation of the cost function of the VPC, thereby deriving the input impedance of the inverter-permanent magnet motor system. Then, the impedance matching criterion and Nyquist stability criterion are used to theoretically prove that the proposed strategy can effectively improve system stability, and the robustness of the proposed method to changes in motor parameters is analyzed. Finally, experimental verification was conducted on a 1 kW motor platform. The results show that when the motor is running under rated working conditions, after adding the stability constraint, the dc-link voltage fluctuation drops from 40 V to 7 V; the q-axis current pulsation rate also drops to 3.8 %. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the VPC strategy can effectively suppress the dc-link voltage oscillation of the cascade drive system.

The warm shed method is commonly employed in concrete construction during winter as an effective technique. This study aims to investigate the impact of different sizes and heating methods on the temperature inside the shed and the concrete through scale model testing. The hot air heating method is simulated using finite element software, and a prediction model is developed. The findings reveal an inverse relationship between the size of the warm shed and its heat preservation effect. When utilizing hot air, both the maximum temperature inside the warm shed and at the center of the concrete increase by 15.5 °C and 25.2 °C respectively compared to when employing a point heat source, resulting in earlier stabilization times of 390 min and 1000 min respectively, as well as a more uniform temperature distribution across all parts. Based on finite element simulation results, an optimal wind speed μ is proposed along with a corresponding prediction model.

This study conducted a thorough analysis of energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the production of hot mix asphalt. The primary sources of energy usage in asphalt mixes are the heating of aggregates, asphalt, and burners, with aggregate heating accounting for a remarkable 97% of the total energy consumption. The results indicate that low-temperature asphalt mixes offer significant benefits over conventional hot mix asphalt in terms of energy efficiency and GHG emissions, with reductions in carbon dioxide emissions ranging from 18% to 36% and energy savings between 15% and 87%. Additionally, the use of recycled asphalt pavement led to a 12% decrease in carbon dioxide emissions and a 15% reduction in energy consumption. The study further explored the effects of various fuel types on emissions, revealing that replacing fuel oil with natural gas can effectively diminish the carbon footprint of the production process. By optimizing production temperatures and selecting cleaner fuel alternatives, this research highlights the potential for considerable energy savings and emission reductions within the asphalt production sector. These strategies not only promote sustainable road construction practices but also play a vital role in environmental protection and climate change mitigation, advocating for the adoption of innovative technologies in asphalt pavement production.

The gas-water distribution and production heterogeneity of tight gas reservoirs have been summarized from experimental and geological observations, but the charging and accumulation mechanisms have not been examined quantitatively by mathematical model. The tight gas charging and accumulation mechanisms were revealed from a combination of physical simulation of nuclear magnetic resonance coupling displacement, numerical simulation considering material and mechanical equilibria, as well as actual geological observation. The results show that gas migrates into tight rocks to preferentially form a gas saturation stabilization zone near the source-reservoir interface. When the gas source is insufficient, gas saturation reduction zone and uncharged zone are formed in sequence from the source-reservoir interface. The better the source rock conditions with more gas expulsion volume and higher overpressure, the thicker the gas saturation stabilization and reduction zones, and the higher the overall gas saturation. When the source rock conditions are limited, the better the tight reservoir conditions with higher porosity and permeability as well as larger pore throat, the thinner the gas saturation stabilization and reduction zones, but the gas saturation is high. The sweet spot of tight gas is developed in the high-quality reservoir near the source rock, which often corresponds to the gas saturation stabilization zone. The numerical simulation results by mathematical model agree well with the physical simulation results by nuclear magnetic resonance coupling displacement, and reasonably explain the gas-water distribution and production pattern of deep reservoirs in the Xujiaweizi fault depression of the Songliao Basin and tight gas reservoirs in the Linxing–Huangfu area of the Ordos Basin.

Abstract Background Prosthesis subsidence and mechanical failure were considered significant threats after vertebral body replacement during the long-term follow-up. Therefore, improving and optimizing the structure of vertebral substitutes for exceptional performance has become a pivotal challenge in spinal reconstruction. Methods The study aimed to develop a novel artificial vertebral implant (AVI) with triply periodic minimal surface Gyroid porous structures to enhance the safety and stability of prostheses. The biomechanical performance of AVIs under different loading conditions was analyzed using the finite element method. These implants were fabricated using selective laser melting technology and evaluated through static compression and subsidence experiments. Results The results demonstrated that the peak stress in the Gyroid porous AVI was consistently lower than that in the traditional porous AVI under all loading conditions, with a maximum reduction of 73.4%. Additionally, it effectively reduced peak stress at the bone-implant interface of the vertebrae. Static compression experiments demonstrated that the Gyroid porous AVI was about 1.63 times to traditional porous AVI in terms of the maximum compression load, indicating that Gyroid porous AVI could meet the safety requirement. Furthermore, static subsidence experiments revealed that the subsidence tendency of Gyroid porous AVI in polyurethane foam (simulated cancellous bone) was approximately 15.7% lower than that of traditional porous AVI. Conclusions The Gyroid porous AVI exhibited higher compressive strength and lower subsidence tendency than the strut-based traditional porous AVI, indicating it may be a promising substitute for spinal reconstruction.

The relationship between biodegraded oil and its source has long been a complex and contentious topic. The Western Halaalate area is located in the Piedmont area on the northwest margin of the Junggar Basin. Source rocks of the Fengcheng Formation exist both locally and in the nearby Mahu Depression. In order to determine the source of biodegraded crude oil in this area, the molecular marker characteristics of biodegraded crude oil were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that the vitrinite reflectance (Ro) of source rocks of the Permian Fengcheng Formation in the nearby Mahu Depression is greater than 1.3% and has entered a high mature stage of condensate oil and moisture gas; the source rock of Permian Fengcheng Formation in Western Halaalate area is in a mature stage with Ro of 0.79%~1.13%. The ascending configuration of tricyclic terpenes C20-C21-C23 for the crude oil samples found in the Carboniferous strata of the Western Halaalate Area is consistent with the characteristics of the Fengcheng Formation source rocks, which are present in both the Western Halaalate Area and the nearby Mahu Depression. Chromatography spectrometry examination shows that crude oils have undergone a varying degree of biodegradation. The Carboniferous oil was originated from the in situ Fengcheng Formation source rocks based on the application of molecular markers resistant to biodegradation, such as maturity parameters, salinity parameters, the new gammacerane index, and aromatic hydrocarbon parameters, combined with the analysis of hydrocarbon migration pathway. In addition, the oil biodegradation alteration rules in the Western Halaalate area were clarified, which advances regional knowledge of the relationship between biodegraded oil and source rocks.

The vibration of concrete is a typical concealed construction process, in which mature supervisory methods are lacking. The quality of vibration relies heavily on the subjective experience and sense of responsibility of the vibration operators. For the widely used hand-held concrete vibrators, existing methods for monitoring the quality of vibration primarily focus on the horizontal positioning of the vibrator. Due to the limited measurable range of vibration depth, these methods are inapplicable for monitoring the vibration depth during the vibration of deeper structures such as walls, columns, and large volumes of concrete. This paper makes the initial attempt to address the issue of monitoring concrete vibration depth, presenting a method that broadens the measurable range of depth in vibration monitoring. Inspired by the principles of optical and magnetic scales, this paper introduces a radio frequency identification (RFID) scales positioning system for the real-time monitoring of vibration depth. The proposed RFID scales vibration depth monitoring method theoretically has no upper limit on the measurable vibration depth, rendering it applicable to monitoring vibration depth of any extent. By comparing the positioning accuracy of different RFID scales hardware compositions, the optimal RFID scales hardware composition and the most effective RFID scales positioning algorithm were identified. The feasibility and accuracy of the vibration depth monitoring method based on RFID scales were validated through engineering field application. This method achieves centimeter-level accuracy in monitoring vibration depth, offers a tool for the precise control of vibration depth, and helps avoid potential quality issues in vibration.

Repetitive control (RC) has been widely used in many fields due to its excellent ability to suppress periodic disturbances. However, when the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) operates at variable speeds, the speed loop sampling frequency is usually not equal to an integer multiple of the fundamental frequency of speed ripple, which prevents disturbances from being completely suppressed. In addition, the open-loop gain of the motor control system with RC is too large at certain frequencies, resulting in excessive speed overshoot during startup and loading. To solve these two problems, this paper proposes a fractional order repetitive control (FORC) strategy with dynamically adjustable gain. A fractional order delay link is introduced to make up for the shortcomings of the conventional repetitive controller (CRC) in its ability to suppress periodic speed ripples when the sampling frequency is not an integer multiple of the fundamental frequency of the motor. Then, to weaken the speed overshoot caused by RC, a nonlinear function fal(e,α,δ) is added in the front of the FORC to dynamically adjust the FORC gain. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper proposes a new method for compensating current measurement errors in shipboard permanent magnet propulsion motors. The method utilizes cascade decoupling second-order generalized integrators (SOGIs) and adaptive linear neurons (ADALINEs) as the current harmonic extractor and the compensator, respectively. It can compensate for the dq-axes offset and scaling errors simultaneously, improving phase current distortion while reducing the ripples of motor speed and torque. Compared to the traditional motor model-based compensation strategies, the proposed method is robust against the changes in motor parameters with the online adaptive capability of the ADALINE algorithm. Furthermore, due to the good real-time performance of SOGIs and ADALINEs, the proposed compensation strategy can effectively operate in both the steady state and transient state of the motor. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through the physical and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments. After compensating for the current measurement errors of a 1 kW test motor with the propeller-characteristics load, the torque ripple and speed ripple are reduced by more than 65% and 80%, respectively. At the same time, the DC component and the second-order and third-order harmonics in the phase currents are also significantly reduced. Similar test results can be also obtained on the HIL platform with a 100 kW permanent magnet motor.

With the deepening exploratory development, geological targets are gradually shifting from conventional reservoirs to unconventional ones. The sandstone reservoirs in the northeast margin of the Ordos Basin are stacked vertically and change quickly horizontally with thin thicknesses. Therefore, traditional inversion technology cannot satisfy the requirements of precise prediction of thin reservoirs. To solve this problem, this paper integrated geological, seismic and logging data based on the GR curve. A wave form simulation of the MG block in the eastern margin of Ordos Basin was conducted, and the distribution of sandstone reservoirs in the target bed was depicted. The results showed that the waveform indication simulation profiles had a high resolution both horizontally and vertically. They were also in line with the drilling well and strongly correlated with the seismic waveform, which could reflect the spatial variation in the reservoir and accord with the law of geological deposition in the study area. Therefore, as a more efficient inversion method, waveform indication simulation provided a strong support for the refined study of thin inter-bedded reservoirs and helped to maximize the development and utilization of gas resources.

Objective To assess the tibio‐femoral contact forces before and after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by three‐dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) models and gait analysis. Methods Two hospitalized patients with Kellgren–Lawrence grade IV varus KOA and two healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. Both patients underwent unilateral TKA. FEA models were established based on CT and MR images of the knees of the patients with KOA and healthy subjects. Gait analysis was performed using a three‐dimensional motion capture system with a force plate. Three direction forces at the ankle joints were calculated by inverse dynamic analysis, which provided the load for the FEA models. The total contact forces of the knee joints were also calculated by inverse dynamic analysis to enable comparisons with the results from the FEA models. The total knee contact forces, maximum von Mises stress, and stress distribution of the medial plateau were compared between the patients and healthy subjects. The distributions of the medial plateau force at 2 and 6 months postoperatively were compared with the distributions of the forces preoperatively and those in the healthy subjects. Results During static standing, the medial plateau bore the most of the total contact forces in the knees with varus KOA (90.78% for patient 1 and 93.53% for patient 2) compared with 64.75 ± 3.34% of the total force in the healthy knees. At the first and second peaks of the ground reaction force during the stance phase of a gait cycle, the medial plateau bore a much higher percentage of contact forces in patients with KOA (74.78% and 86.48%, respectively, for patient 1; 70.68% and 83.56%, respectively, for patient 2) than healthy subjects (61.06% ± 3.43% at the first peak and 72.09% ± 1.83% at the second peak). Two months after TKA, the percentages of contact forces on the medial tibial plateau were 79.65%–85.19% at the first and second peaks of ground reaction forces during the stance phase of a gait cycle, and the percentages decreased to 53.99% – 68.13% 6 months after TKA. Conclusion FEA showed that TKA effectively restored the distribution of tibio‐femoral contact forces during static standing and walking, especially 6 months after the surgery. The changes in the gait were consistent with the changes in the contact force distribution calculated by the FEA model.

Objective To compare the biomechanical properties of percutaneous cement discoplasty (PCD) in the spinal column between different implant‐endplate friction. Methods A validated L3‐Scarumfinite element (FE) model was modified for simulation. In the PCD model, the L4/5 level was modified based on model 1 (M1) and model 2 (M2). In M1, the interaction between bone cement and endplate was defined as face‐to‐face contact with a friction coefficient of 0.3; in M2, the contact was defined as a Tie constraint. 7.5 N m moments of four physiological motions and axial load of 15, 100 and 400 N preload were imposed at the top of L3. The range of motion (ROM) and interface stress analysis of endplates, annulus fibrosus and bone cement of the operated level were calculated for comparisons among the three models. Results The ROM of M1 and M2 increased when compared with the intact model during flexion (FL) (17.5% vs 10.0%), extension (EX) (8.8% vs −8.8%), left bending (LB) (19.0% vs −17.2%) and left axial rotation (LR) (34.6% vs −3.8%). The stress of annulus fibrosus in M1 and M2 decreased in FL (−48.4% vs −57.5%), EX (−25.7% vs −14.7%), LB (−47.5% vs −52.4%), LR (−61.4% vs −68.7%) and axis loading of 100 N (−41.5% vs −15.3%), and 400 N (−27.9% vs −27.3%). The stress of upper endplate of M1 and M2 increased in FL (24.6% vs 24.7%), LB (82.2% vs 89.5%), LR (119% vs 62.4%) and axis loading of 100 N (64.6% vs 45.5%), and 400 N (58.2% vs 24.3%), but was similar in EX (2.9% vs 0.3%). The stress of lower endplate of M1 and M2 increased in FL (170.9% vs 175.0%), EX (180.8% vs 207.7%), LB (302.6% vs 274.7%), LR (332.4% vs 132.8%) and axis loading of 100 N (350.7% vs 168.6%), and 400 N (165.2% vs 106.7%). Conclusion Percutaneous cement discoplasty procedure could make effect on the mobility or stiffness. The fusion of bone cement and endplate might have more biomechanical advantages, including of the decreasing rate of implant subsidence and dislocation, and the increase spine stability.

Due to the harsh radiation environment produced by strong laser plasma, most of the detectors based on semiconductors cannot perform well. So, it is important to develop new detecting techniques with higher detection thresholds and highly charged particle resolution for investigating nuclear fusion reactions in laser-plasma environments. The Columbia Resin No. 39 (CR-39) detector is mainly sensitive to ions and insensitive to the backgrounds, such as electrons and photons. The detector has been widely used to detect charged particles in laser-plasma environments. In this work, we used a potassium–ethanol–water (PEW) etching solution to reduce the proton sensitivity of CR-39, by raising the detection threshold for the research of laser-induced 11B(p, α)2α reaction. We calibrated the 3–5 MeV α particles in an etching condition of 60°C PEW-25 solution (17% KOH + 25%C2H5OH + 58%H2O) and compared them with the manufacturer’s recommended etching conditions of 6.25 N NaOH aqueous solution at 98°C in our laser-induced nuclear reaction experiment. The results indicate, with the PEW-25 solution, that CR-39 is more suitable to distinguish α tracks from the proton background in our experiment. We also present a method to estimate the minimum detection range of α energy on specific etching conditions in our experiment.

Abstract The conversion of biomass faces the challenge of mass and heat transfer, as well as the exertion of heterogeneous catalyst, because raw biomass exists usually in solid state. In this work, the simultaneous transformation and dissolution of the three main components (hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin) in corn straw were achieved in ethanol/ valerolactone (GVL)/H2O (10 : 10 : 40, v/v/v) co‐solvent system. With the assistance of AlCl3 ⋅ 6H2O, the conversion of hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose was >96 % at 170 °C. The conversion of solid biomass into fluid, overcoming the mass transfer restrictions between solid biomass and solid catalysts, provides new raw materials to further upgrading. H2O could penetrate inside the crystalline cellulose to swell even dissolve it, while ethanol and GVL acted as media to dissolve especially the G unit in lignin. The H+ derived from AlCl3 ⋅ 6H2O hydrolysis could break the linkages of lignin‐hemicellulose and glycosidic bond in saccharides, and aluminum chloride promoted the next degradation of polysaccharides to small molecules. Consequently, as high as 33.2 % yield of levulinic acid and 42.2 % yield of furfural were obtained. The cleavage of β‐O‐4 and Cβ−Cγ bonds in lignin produced large amounts of lignin‐derived dimers and trimers. The total yield of monomeric phenols is up to 8 %.

Reasonable production prediction of coalbed methane (CBM) is of great significance for improving the economic benefit of CBM reservoirs. Current prediction methods for CBM production focus on the later stages of development, with few studies on early production forecasting. The objective of this work is to provide a reliable new idea for the early production prediction of CBM through various analyses and demonstrations. First, the CBM development modes are classified according to the production characteristics of the Panhe demonstration block of Shaanxi Province, China. Second, an efficient and feasible early production prediction model is established based on the geological potential and development potential. Finally, using the proposed model, different modes’ production characteristics and optimization strategies are analyzed. The research shows that the gas production profiles can be divided into two modes: single-peak mode (SPM) and multipeak mode (MPM). The peak production and average EUR of the SPM are 49.6% and 32.4% higher than those of the MPM, but the stable production period is only 0.2~1 year. In terms of the geological potential of CBM wells, the gas content, critical desorption pressure, and formation coefficient of the SPM are 6.7%, 13.3%, and 37.8% higher than those of the MPM, and the gas wells are mainly located in the high part of the coal seam (the average height difference is about 20 m). Besides, the concept of quasidesorption degree Pdq is innovatively introduced to characterize the development potential of gas well. The Pdq has an exponential relationship with CBM production, and the coefficient of the exponential term in SPM is approximately 22% larger than that in MPM. Moreover, the production of gas wells is greatly affected by the continuity of production. In the process of gas production, the influence of factors such as equipment shutdown should be minimized. To examine the applicability of the proposed method, the model is applied to an actual CBM well in Panhe, and the prediction accuracy is higher than 85%.

Gross error interference or noise statistical deviation is the main factor that leads to the accuracy deterioration of extended Kalman filter (EKF) in estimating the speed and rotor position of ship propulsion permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). In this paper, an adaptive extended Kalman filter (AEKF) algorithm based on innovation sequence is proposed. In the proposed method, gross error interference is first added to EKF to analyze its influence on the observation accuracy. Then, the weighting coefficient is set in the calculation of innovation covariance. By adjusting the weight of the innovation covariance matrix at the adjacent time, the innovation covariance difference is calculated and then used in the calculation of Kalman gain. The observation performance comparison between AEKF and EKF strategies is conducted with subject to gross error interference and noise statistics deviate. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed AEKF has stronger robustness and higher prediction accuracy of speed and rotor position.

In the control of marine permanent-magnet propulsion motors, active disturbance rejection control has attracted much attention because it can deal with external load disturbances and uncertainties of motor parameters at the same time. However, the conventional second-order ADRC has the problem of slow disturbance observation speed. To this end, this paper proposes an improved third-order extended state observer using the proportional–integral disturbance update law to improve the tracking performance and anti-external disturbance ability of the motor control system. Then, aiming at the problem that the structure does not effectively use the current information, resulting in large speed fluctuations when the load changes, the measured value of the q-axis current is used as the disturbance feedforward compensation item to further improve the load disturbance suppression ability of the motor. Finally, in order to suppress the influence of the current periodic disturbance caused by unmodeled dynamics on the steady-state accuracy of the motor, a nonlinear switching function with bounded gain and an IIR low-pass filter are designed to suppress the periodic disturbance without affecting the dynamic performance of the system. Combined with the established ship propeller load model, the effectiveness of the method is verified on the motor experimental platform: When suddenly changing 75% of the propeller load, the motor speed decreases by about 20%, and the adjustment time is 0.1 s, which improves the performance by more than 70% compared to PI control and conventional ADRC methods.

The smut Ustilago esculenta is an endophytic fungus that invades Zizania latifolia (Jiaobai) and plays an important role in inducing the host stem to form a swollen gall. The aims of this study were to investigate isolation, identification and inoculation methods of U. esculenta from Jiaobai. The spore suspension culturing method was the best method of isolating U. esculenta, and yeast-like fungal strains and septate hyphal strains were obtained. The universal primers ITS1 and ITS4 amplified a ribosomal DNA spacer element from all tested strains, while specific primers for Lam16A gene generated a 442 bp product only with septate hyphae strains. De novo transcriptome assembly results showed that the yeast-like fungal strains did not match Ustilago, and genomic analysis suggested the septate hyphae strains were highly similar to known smut fungi. Therefore, the septate hyphae strains were identified as U. esculenta, which indicated that the ITS primers were not species-specific but that Lam16A-specific primers can distinguish U. esculenta accurately and easily. In vitro, U. esculenta grew quickly on PDA medium at 28 °C in darkness. Furthermore, an inoculation method was established to produce swollen stems by injecting a spore suspension of U. esculenta at OD600 = 2.5 into the basal culm internode of male Jiaobai.

The power electronic converter that supplies power to the unmanned ship's servers can cause self-excited oscillation of the LC input filter under heavy load. To suppress voltage oscillation, an input impedance shaping method based on a sliding mode disturbance observer is presented. The self-excited oscillation mechanism of the LC filter caused by the buck converter's positive feedback is analyzed by using the small-signal model. The sliding mode disturbance observer calculates the input voltage according to the output voltage, inductance current and duty cycle of the buck converter. The feedforward compensation of the observed voltage reshapes the input admittance of the buck converter, making the system not meet the conditions of self-excited oscillation and suppressing the voltage oscillation of the LC filter. The phase shaping of input admittance is compared with the traditional amplitude shaping by the Bode diagram and Nyquist diagram. The experimental results show that the phase shaping method could better suppress the LC filter's self-excited oscillation and the sliding mode disturbance observer reduced the hardware cost.

RNA ligases play important roles in repairing and circularizing RNAs post-transcriptionally. In this study, we generated an allelic knockout of ATP-dependent RNA ligase (Rnl) in the hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus kodakarensis to identify its biological targets. A comparative analysis of circular RNA reveals that the Rnl-knockout strain represses circularization of C/D box sRNAs without affecting the circularization of tRNA and rRNA processing intermediates. Recombinant archaeal Rnl could circularize C/D box sRNAs with a mutation in the conserved C/D box sequence element but not when the terminal stem structures were disrupted, suggesting that proximity of the two ends could be critical for intramolecular ligation. Furthermore, T. kodakarensis accumulates aberrant RNA fragments derived from ribosomal RNA in the absence of Rnl. These results suggest that Rnl is responsible for C/D box sRNA circularization and may also play a role in ribosomal RNA processing.

ABSTRACT: In this study, the labour requirement and labour cost of common vegetable cultivation were investigated to help agricultural enterprises and family farms establishing reasonable “working hour” management systems in Jiangsu Province. The labour requirement of each step of three type of producers, agriculture enterprises, family farms, and private vegetable growers, in three regions in Jiangsu Province, named north, middle and south Jiangsu, was investigated by on-site observation or questionnaire survey during 2018 and 2019. The labour cost of each step and each vegetable was counted according to the labour requirement and the salary level. The results indicated that “residue cleaning”, “soil preparation and bedding”, “plant regulation”, “auxin treatment of tomato flowers” and “hand pollination” accounted for higher proportions of labour cost amongst the entire vegetable culture process. No significant differences in the labour requirements of the investigated vegetables were reported amongst three regions in Jiangsu Province. However, the order of labour cost is south Jiangsu > north Jiangsu > middle Jiangsu, due to the salary difference amongst three regions. Watermelon, broccoli and chive are more suitable for growing by agricultural enterprises since they have relatively low unit labour and high prices. We established a method to calculate and analyze labour requirement and cost of vegetable production in Jiangsu Province, which also may be instructive for other regions. In addition, our results provided useful data for various vegetable producers to improve their labour management.

Due to the abundant and promising biological activities of aromatic hydrazones, it is of great significance to study the biological activities of their metal complexes for the research and development of metal-based drugs. In this review, we focus on the metal complexes of polycyclic aromatic hydrazones, which still do not receive much attention, and summarize the studies related to their biological activities. Although the large number of metal complexes in phenylhydrazone prevent them all from being summarized, the significant value of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons themselves (such as naphthalene and anthracene) as pharmacophores are also considered. Therefore, the bioactivities of the metal complexes of naphthylhydrazone and anthrahydrazone are focused on, and the recent research progress on the metal complexes of anthrahydrazone by the authors is also included. In terms of biological activities, these complexes mainly show antibacterial and anticancer activities, along with less bioactivities. The present review demonstrates that the structural design and bioactivities of these complexes are fundamental, which also indicates a certain structure—activity relationship (SAR) in some substructural areas. However, a systematic and comprehensive conclusion of the SAR is still not available, which suggests that more attention should be paid to the bioactivities of the metal complexes of polycyclic aromatic hydrazones since their potential in structural design and biological activity remains to be explored. We hope that this review will attract more researchers to devote their interest and energy into this promising area.

In this paper, we investigated the internal structure of the beetle elytra, i.e., two different structural forms I and II of the bio-inspired honeycomb column thin-walled structures (BHTS) that give the honeycomb sandwich structure frequently used in construction projects better mechanical properties and lightweight performance. BHTS specimens were fabricated by additive manufacturing selective laser melting (AM-SLM) using AlSi10Mg Al-Si alloy. In order to understand the effect of section angle number on BHTS during loading, quasi-static uniaxial compression tests were carried out and verified by numerical simulation. The experimental results showed that in the quasi-static uniaxial compression tests, the number of section angles greatly improved the energy absorption (EA) index of each BHTS: the average value of initial peak crushing force (PCF) of hexagonal BHTS increased by 108.82% and 43.44%, respectively, compared to triangular and rectangular BHTS. The average value of the mean crushing force (MCF) increased by 74.87% and 45.48%, respectively. The average value of EA increased by 89.02% and 46.64%, respectively. The results indicate that the number of section angles can be used as an effective way to enhance the EA of BHTS. This work can provide a reference for the design of high-efficiency energy absorbers and will be widely used in EA scenarios such as construction, transportation, etc.

A new rhodium(III) complex of a 9-anthrahydrazone ligand ((Z)-2-(2-(Anthracen-9-ylmethylene)hydrazineyl)pyrimidine, 9-PMAH) is six-coordinated respectively by one bidentate ligand, one solvent DMSO, and three chlorides, to form a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. The ligand chelates to Rh(III) via the hydrazone N atom (N1) and pyrimidine N atom (N3), whereas DMSO coordinates to Rh(III) via the S atom. The three chloride ligands (Cl1, Cl2, and Cl3) are in a mer-configuration of the octahedron, with the DMSO cis- to the pyrimidine nitrogen. In solution, the complex may exist in the positively charged species, [RhIIICl2(DMSO)(9-PMAH)]+, but can be stable in this mode for no less than 48 h. It was suggested by the fluorescence spectroscopic analysis that the complex showed much higher intercalative binding ability with ct-DNA than the typical DNA intercalator, EtBr.

This paper proposed an improved sensorless control strategy for ship electric propulsion which bases on I/f control and back electromotive force integral (EMF), suppressing the speed fluctuation during algorithm switching, improving the flux estimation accuracy of internal permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) and achieving the stable operation of the motor. Firstly, this strategy was adopted for controlling the stator current during the switching process to improve speed fluctuation. Then, a simple flux estimation method is presented by rewriting the mathematical model of IPMSM. To achieve the result which overcomes the problem of flux estimation and current measurement errors and improved LPF was developed which solved the phase delay and DC-offset problem of flux estimation. Finally, the propeller load platform is under construction to verify the effectiveness of the control strategy. Experimental results show that the system based on this method works smoothly and it has better speed tracking performance.

The beetle’s elytra have the characteristics of light weight and high energy absorption (EA). In this paper, based on the internal structure of beetle elytra, two bio-inspired honeycomb column thin-walled structures (BHTS) I and II were fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) technology in additive manufacturing (AM) in order to understand the possible influence of strain rate effect (SRE) on the BHTS under low speed uniaxial compression loading. The influence of three different SREs (0.001 s−1, 0.01 s−1 and 0.1 s−1) on the EA of BHTSs specimens during loading was discussed by means of out-of-plane uniaxial compression tests verified with numerical simulations. The experimental results show that SRE has a significant effect on the EA of BHTSs in low speed out-of-plane uniaxial compression tests: SRE can significantly increase the initial peak crushing force (PCF) and specific energy absorption (SEA) of all types of BHTS specimens. The average increase in PCF/SEA under SRE loading of 0.1 s−1 is 12.70%/9.79% and 17.63 %/11.60%, respectively, compared with 0.001 s−1 and 0.01 s−1. These research methods reduce the use of materials and improve the utilization rate of materials, which can provide important assistance for the design, manufacture and modeling of AM-based materials.

In this work, the tensile responses of 3D woven quartz fiber silica matrix composites were experimentally and numerically investigated. The ceramic composites reinforced by 3D layer-to-layer angle interlock woven preforms were manufactured and tested under warp direction tension. A numerical method is proposed to model the mechanical response of the ceramic composites under tension. The method is based on a mesoscopic single layer unit cell for the composites, using a progressive damage analysis approach to account for damage evolution. The predicted results are compared with experimental data, and good agreement in the stress–strain response up to the ultimate tensile strength of the composites is obtained. It has been demonstrated that the proposed numerical model based on a simple single layer unit cell is both efficient and effective in characterization of the mechanical behavior of the 3D layer-to-layer woven ceramic composites.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement technology has been widely used in the reinforcement of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. At this stage, high prestressed CFRP board reinforcement is often used in actual reinforcement. However, most reinforced bridges are designed for a long time, and the design value of the protective layer is low, and it is impossible to achieve a large prestressed tension. Therefore, this paper proposes the reverse-arch method to paste the CFRP board and apply low prestress to strengthen the symmetrical RC beam. Through the three-point forward loading test, the cracking load, ultimate load, crack width, mid-span deflection, strain and failure mode of a reverse-arch method-pasted CFRP board-reinforced beam, a directly pasted CFRP board-reinforced beam and an unreinforced beam are compared. The results show that the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of the test beam can be improved by pasting CFRP plates with anti-arch method, but the ductility of the test beam is reduced. Compared with the unreinforced beam, the maximum cracking load and ultimate load are increased by 56% and 63% respectively. The reverse-arch method can produce low prestress, improve the stiffness and bearing capacity of members, and has a good prospect of engineering application.

The slippage of cable clamps during the long-term operation of suspension bridges is a common and detrimental phenomenon. From an experimental point of view, the cable clamp slippage of a suspension bridge was investigated to reveal the effect of this sliding on the force acting on the full bridge. The forces acting on the bridge before and after the slippage were analyzed using a finite element model. The calculation results showed that the cable clamp slippage directly affects the cable forces of the hangers. The hanger cable force decreased by 19.2% when the slippage reached 10.2 cm, while the maximum increase in the cable force of adjacent hangers was 147.7 kN, an increase of 7.25%. The variation of forces in the hanger cable disrupted the force balance of the main girder, thereby producing a torque effect at the corresponding position in the girder, i.e., increased torque. Meanwhile, the slippage affected the axial tension in the main cable and the main girder. The impact of the tower internal force was less than 1%. Hence, the study concluded that the effect of cable clamp slippage is better understood, ensuring the safety of the suspension bridge.

Based on study on the main factors affecting the initial productivity of directional wells in multilayer sandstone reservoirs of Penglai 19-3 oil field, a permeability interpretation model based on lithofacies constraint was established, and an initial productivity prediction formula for directional wells in offshore multilayer sandstone reservoirs was derived. Permeability and oil saturation are the main factors affecting initial productivity of directional wells in Penglai 19-3 oil field. Using core, scanning electron microscope, casting thin section, logging and production data, and a new permeability interpretation model considering the influence of macro sedimentary characteristics and microscopic pore structure was built. On the basis of permeability correction, resistivity increase ratio is introduced to characterize the effect of oil saturation, to modify the Vandervlis productivity formula of directional wells to get an initial productivity prediction equation suitable for continental multilayer sandstone reservoirs. The study results show that the permeability considering petrographic constraints and the production forecasting formula including resistivity increase ratio are more accurate. A collective action that considerably affects government management and public security, e.g., a mass demonstration, usually experiences a long development period, originating from small and uncertain variations called weak signals on social media. Researchers generally identify collective action by small changes in communication frequency, emerging key words, and sentiment. However, most studies only consider the present environment, which may not evolve into a collective action, or conduct a short-term prediction in which significant damage is already done when the collective action is identified. This paper proposes a predictive framework to identify potential collective actions, considering the future evolution as well as the present situation, and providing a reference for early decision making. In the framework, a future sign to describe events is improved and the enhanced gray system theory is used to predict the evolution of a future sign. Mentions of events surrounding the Arab Spring-using over 300000 different open-content Web sources crawled from social media in seven different languages-are analyzed, which suggests that the predictive framework can more precisely identify the weak signals of collective actions.

Due to the existence of line impedances and low-bandwidth communication, the traditional peer-to-peer control method based on droop control has difficult meeting the requirements of current sharing and voltage stability in islanded DC microgrids at the same time. In this paper, a novel current-sharing control strategy based on injected small ac voltage with low frequency and low amplitude is proposed for multiple paralleled DC−DC converters. The small ac voltage is superimposed onto the output voltage of each converter. Then, the reactive circulating power is generated and used to regulate the output DC voltage of each converter. Under the droop characteristic between the injected frequency and output DC current, a feedback mechanism is generated to realize the accurate current sharing. On this basis, a reactive power-voltage limiter link and virtual negative impedance are added. Under the interaction of the two links, the bus voltage drop caused by line impedances can be almost completely eliminated. This method does not need any communication or to change the hardware structure. The controller design process is presented in detail along with a system stability analysis. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy are validated by the results obtained from simulations and experiments.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) relies on a specialized set of metabolic pathways to support growth in macrophages. By conducting an extensive, unbiased chemical screen to identify small molecules that inhibit Mtb metabolism within macrophages, we identified a significant number of novel compounds that limit Mtb growth in macrophages and in medium containing cholesterol as the principle carbon source. Based on this observation, we developed a chemical-rescue strategy to identify compounds that target metabolic enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism. This approach identified two compounds that inhibit the HsaAB enzyme complex, which is required for complete degradation of the cholesterol A/B rings. The strategy also identified an inhibitor of PrpC, the 2-methylcitrate synthase, which is required for assimilation of cholesterol-derived propionyl-CoA into the TCA cycle. These chemical probes represent new classes of inhibitors with novel modes of action, and target metabolic pathways required to support growth of Mtb in its host cell. The screen also revealed a structurally-diverse set of compounds that target additional stage(s) of cholesterol utilization. Mutants resistant to this class of compounds are defective in the bacterial adenylate cyclase Rv1625/Cya. These data implicate cyclic-AMP (cAMP) in regulating cholesterol utilization in Mtb, and are consistent with published reports indicating that propionate metabolism is regulated by cAMP levels. Intriguingly, reversal of the cholesterol-dependent growth inhibition caused by this subset of compounds could be achieved by supplementing the media with acetate, but not with glucose, indicating that Mtb is subject to a unique form of metabolic constraint induced by the presence of cholesterol.

The aim of this prospective randomized double-blind clinical study is to examine the benefits of using olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) combined with or without Schwann cells (SCs) in treating chronic complete spinal cord injuries (SCIs). This would offer patients a better alternative for neurological functional recovery. According to the initial design, 28 eligible participants with cervical chronic complete SCI were recruited and randomly allocated into four groups of seven participants each. The neurological assessments were to be performed according to the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) and International Association of Neurorestoratology (IANR) Functional Rating Scales, in combination with electrophysiological tests, for example, electromyography (EMG) and paraspinal somatosensory evoked potentials (PSSEPs). Here we have summarized the data from seven patients; three patients received an OEC intraspinal transplantation, one underwent SC implantation, and one received a combination of OECs and SCs. The remaining two patients were used as controls. The scores were evaluated independently by at least two neurologists in a blinded fashion for comparing the neurological functional changes during pre- and post-cell transplantation (6-month follow-up). All patients who received OECs, SCs alone, and a combination of them showed functional improvement. Mild fever occurred in one of the patients with OEC transplant that subsided after symptomatic treatments. All treated patients except one showed improvement in the electrophysiological tests. The functional improvement rate comprises 5/5 (100%) in the treated group, but 0/2 (0%) in the control group ( p = 0.008). These preliminary findings show that transplanting OECs, SCs, or a combination of them is well tolerated and that they have beneficial effects in patients. Thus, further studies in larger patient cohorts are warranted to assess the benefits and risks of these intervention strategies. The aim of this study is to explore the safety and therapeutic effect of multiple cell transplantations on patients with multiple system atrophy. Ten patients suffering from multiple system atrophy were treated by multiple cell transplantations from August 2005 to March 2011. They were six males and four females, with an average age of 51.90 ± 12.92 years (23–66 years). Multiple cell types were transplanted by intravenous, intrathecal, and intracranial routes; for example, 0.4–0.5 × 10 6 /kg umbilical cord mesenchymal cells by intravenous drip, intrathecal implantation of 2.0 × 10 6 Schwann cells and 2.0–5.0 × 10 6 neural progenitor cells through cerebellar cistern puncture, or 2 × 10 6 olfactory ensheathing cells and 4 × 10 6 neural progenitor cells injected into key points for neural network restoration (KPNNR). The neurological function was assessed before and after treatment with the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale (ICARS) by the World Federation of Neurology and the Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS). The patients achieved neurological function amelioration after treatment, which included improvements in walking ability, gaits, standing, speech, and muscular tension; the ICARS score decreased from a preoperative 46.30 ± 14.50 points to postoperative 41.90 ± 18.40 points ( p = 0.049). The UMSARS score decreased from preoperative 50.00 ± 20.65 points to postoperative 46.56 ± 23.05 points ( p = 0.037). Among them, two patients remained stable and underwent a second treatment 0.5–1 year after the first therapy. After treatment, five patients were followed up for more than 6 months. Balance and walking ability improved further in four patients, while one patient remained stable for over 6 months. In conclusion, a strategy of comprehensive cell-based neurorestorative therapy for patients with multiple system atrophy is safe and appears to be beneficial. Stroke is the third leading cause of death worldwide and a huge perpetrator in adult disability. This pilot clinical study investigates the possible benefits of transplanting multiple cells in chronic stroke. A total of 10 consecutive stroke patients were treated by combination cell transplantation on the basis of an intraparenchymal approach from November 2003 to April 2011. There were six males and four females. Their age ranged from 42 to 87 years, and the course of disease varied from 6 months to 20 years. Six patients suffered cerebral infarction, and four patients suffered a brain hemorrhage. The olfactory ensheathing cells, neural progenitor cells, umbilical cord mesenchymal cells, and Schwann cells were injected through selected routes including intracranial parenchymal implantation, intrathecal implantation, and intravenous administration, respectively. The clinical neurological function was assessed carefully and independently before treatment and during a long-term follow-up using the Clinic Neurologic Impairment Scale and the Barthel index. All patients were followed up successfully from 6 months to 2 years after cell transplantation. Every subject achieved neurological function amelioration including improved speech, muscle strength, muscular tension, balance, pain, and breathing; most patients had an increased Barthel index score and Clinic Neurologic Impairment Scale score. These preliminary results demonstrate the novel strategy of combined multiple cell therapy based on intraparenchymal delivery: it appears to be relatively clinically safe and at least initially beneficial for chronic stroke patients. Our previous series of studies have proven that olfactory ensheathing cell (OEC) transplantation appears to be able to slow the rate of clinical progression after OEC transplantation in the first 4 months and cell intracranial (key points for neural network restoration, KPNNR) and/or intraspinal (impaired segments) implants provide benefit for patients (including both the bulbar onset and limb onset subtypes) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Here we report the results of cell therapy in patients with ALS on the basis of long-term observation following multiple transplants. From March of 2003 to January of 2010, 507 ALS patients received our cellular treatment. Among them, 42 patients underwent further OEC therapy by the route of KPNNR for two or more times (two times in 35 patients, three times in 5 patients, four times in 1 patient, and five times in 1 patient). The time intervals are 13.1 (6–60) months between the first therapy and the second one, 15.2 (8–24) months between the second therapy and the third one, 16 (6–26) months between the third therapy and the fourth one, and 9 months between the fourth therapy and the fifth time. All of the patients exhibited partial neurological functional recovery after each cell-based administration. Firstly, the scores of the ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALS-FRS) and ALS Norris Scale increased by 2.6 + 2.4 (0–8) and 4.9 + 5.2 (0–20) after the first treatment, 1.1 + 1.3 (0–5) and 2.3 + 2.9 (0–13) after the second treatment, 1.1 + 1.5 (0–4), and 3.4 + 6.9 (0–19) after the third treatment, 0.0 + 0.0 (0–0), and 2.5 + 3.5 (0–5) after the fourth treatment, and 1 point after the fifth cellular therapy, which were evaluated by independent neurologists. Secondly, the majority of patients have achieved improvement in electromyogram (EMG) assessments after the first, second, third, and fourth cell transplantation. After the first treatment, among the 42 patients, 36 (85.7%) patients' EMG test results improved, the remaining 6 (14.3%) patients' EMG results showed no remarkable change. After the second treatment, of the 42 patients, 30 (71.4%) patients' EMG results improved, 11 (26.2%) patients showed no remarkable change, and 1 (2.4%) patient became worse. After the third treatment, out of the 7 patients, 4 (57.1%) patients improved, while the remaining 3 (42.9%) patients showed no change. Thirdly, the patients have partially recovered their breathing ability as demonstrated by pulmonary functional tests. After the first treatment, 20 (47.6%) patients' pulmonary function ameliorated. After the second treatment, 18 (42.9%) patients' pulmonary function improved. After the third treatment, 2 (28.6%) patients recovered some pulmonary function. After the fourth and fifth treatment, patients' pulmonary function did not reveal significant change. The results show that multiple doses of cellular therapy definitely serve as a positive role in the treatment of ALS. This repeated and periodic cell-based therapy is strongly recommended for the patients, for better controlling this progressive deterioration disorder.

The neurorestorative effect of the parenchymal transplantation of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) for cord trauma remains clinically controversial. The aim of this article is to study the long-term result of OECs for patients with complete chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). One hundred and eight patients suffered from complete chronic SCI were followed up successfully within the period of 3.47 ± 1.12 years after OEC therapy. They were divided into two groups based on the quality and quantity of their rehabilitative training: group A ( n = 79) in sufficient rehabilitation (or active movement-target enhancement-neurorehabilitation therapy, AMTENT) and group B ( n = 29) in insufficient rehabilitation. All patients were assessed by using the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) standard and the International Association of Neurorestoratology Spinal Cord Injury Functional Rating Scale (IANR-SCIFRS). Thirty-one patients were evaluated by the tests of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electromyography (EMG), and paravertebral sensory evoked potential (PVSEP). We found the following. 1) According to ASIA and IANR-SCIFRS assessment for all 108 patients, averaged motor scores increased from 37.79 ± 18.45 to 41.25 ± 18.18 ( p 0.05). 3) Comparing group A with group B, the increased scores in terms of motor, light touch, and pin prick were remarkably different (all p < 0.01), but not IANR-SCIFRS ( p > 0.05). 4) Fourteen of 108 patients (12.96%) became ASIA B from ASIA A; 18 of 108 (16.67%) became ASIA C from ASIA A. Nine of them (8.33%) improved their walk ability or made them rewalk by using a walker with or without assistance; 12 of 84 men (14.29%) improved their sex function. 5) MRI examinations were taken for 31 patients; there were no neoplasm, bleeding, swelling, cysts, neural tissue destruction or infection (abscess) or any other pathological changes in or around OEC transplant sites. 6) EMG examinations were done on 31 patients; 29 showed improvement and the remaining 2 had no change. PVSEP tests were performed in 31 patients; 28 showed improvements and the remaining 3 had no change. 7) No deterioration or complications were observed in our patients within the follow-up period. Our data suggest OEC therapy is safe and can improve neurological functions for patients with complete chronic SCI and ameliorate their quality of life; the AMTENT most likely plays a critical role in enhancing functional recovery after cell-based neurorestorotherapy.

Plumbagin and its Cu (II) complex [Cu (plumbagin)2]·H2O have been synthesized, and their antioxidant activities towards the inhibitory effect on DPPH free radical, reducing power, total antioxidant capacity, and inhibition on lipid peroxidation were investigated. Plumbagin and its Cu (II) complex were found to exhibit scavenging activities on DPPH radical with the inhibitory rate of 41% and 24%, respectively. The reducing power of plumbagin was outstanding at the concentrations of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mg/mL, compared to Cu (II) complex and synthetic antioxidant 2,6-di-ter-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT); the highest level reached 1.333 for plumbagin and 0.581 for Cu (II) complex. Also, the inhibition on lipid peroxidation of plumbagin was higher than that of Cu (II) complex and BHT, 46.4% for plumbagin and 24.5% for Cu (II) complex. The results give a strong impact for designing anticancer drugs, combined with their potential cytotoxic and antioxidant activities, which can be targeted selectively against cancer cells and increase their therapeutic index and additional advantages over other anticancer drugs.

Successful repair of damage in cerebral palsy (CP) needs effective clinical interventions other than simply symptomatic treatments. To elucidate the feasibility of using olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) to treat CP in children and adolescents, we conducted a randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) on 33 patients. The patients were randomly assigned into two groups (treatment group, n = 18; control group, n = 15), and OECs derived from aborted fetal tissue were injected into the bilateral corona radiata in the frontal lobes (a key point for neural network restoration, KPNNR). The Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-66) and the Caregiver Questionnaire Scale were used to evaluate the patients' neurological function and overall health status. Among the 14 patients who completed the 6-month study, six received the cell transplantation and the other eight served as controls. In OEC treatment group, GMFM-66 scores were 26.67 ± 25.33 compared with 19.00 ± 20.00 for the control group. Concurrently, the Caregiver Questionnaire Scale score decreased to 77.83 ± 15.99 in the treatment group in comparison to 138.66 ± 64.06 of the control group. This trial, albeit small in sample size, indicates OEC KPNNR transplantation is effective for functional improvement in children and adolescents with CP, yet without obvious side effects. This small-scale study suggests that the procedure may be a plausible alternative method to treat this not yet curable disorder, and we urge further evaluation with a large-scale RCT.
