The combined effects ot two different rates of air permeability and moisture absorption with regard to clothing microclimate and subjective sensation amongst resting and exercising subjects at a temperature of 27 degrees C, were assessed. The three types of clothing were polyester with low moisture absorption and low air permeability (A), polyester with low moisture absorption and high air permeability (B) and cotton with high moisture absorption and high air permeability (C). Microclimate humidity in the back area was higher in A than in B, and in C than in B. In the chest area the microclimate temperature was higher in B than in A, and in B than in C.

Desized and scoured nylon 6 fabric is treated with liquid ammonia (NH3) at -33.4°C. and the effects of the treatment on crystallinity, density, birefringence, DSC thermogram, moisture regain, water absorption, dyeability, and mechanical properties are investigated. The NH3 treatment increases crystallinity and density, but decreases birefringence and water absorption. Although α- and γ-forms coexist in untreated fibers, the γ-form is partially transformed to the α-form by the NH3 treatment, a result that is confirmed by DSC measurements. The NH3 treatment increases crystallinity, dyeing rate, and equilibrium dye uptake, especially with disperse dyes. Mechanical properties of NH3 treated nylon 6 fabric, KES shearing (G, 2HG, and 2HG5), and bending hysteresis (B and 2HB) are measured. G, 2HG, 2HG5. B, and 2HB decrease with the treatment. NH3 and NaOH/NH3 treated cotton fabrics are processed with hot water at 100 and 130°C, and excellent shrink resistance is obtained with the processing. The crystallite form is transformed from cellulose III to cellulose I. Crystallinity decreased by the NH3 treatment increases a little after hot water processing and washing shrinkage is consider ably controlled. Although the dyeing rate decreases with the NH3 treatment, it increases a little with subsequent hot water processing. In contrast, equilibrium dye uptake de creases with the processing. The mechanical properties of the processed fabrics are evaluated by means of KES shear behavior (G, 2HG) and bending hysteresis (B, 2HB). G and 2HG decreased by NH3 and NaOH/NH3 show almost no change after hot water processing, while B and 2HB, especially the latter, decrease considerably with the hot water processing after treatment with NH3 and NaOH/NH 3.
