1. Gliding patterns of Siberian flying squirrels in relation to forest structure

Abstract

It is widely accepted that the evolution of gliding ability is correlated with forest environments, but differences in gliding locomotion in relation to forest structure remains poorly elucidated in mammals. Although the cost of gliding locomotion decreases with increasing glide distance per unit vertical drop (glide ratio), gliding mammals often use costly low-ratio glides and seldom exploit maximum-ratio glides. In this study, we evaluated our hypothesis that low-ratio glides are related to forest structure by measuring glide distance, vertical drops and landing tree heights in Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans), and we also recorded their behaviour in landing trees. Glide ratio decreased with increasing landing tree height. Squirrels landed on taller trees using low-ratio glides and tended to depart from them quickly without spending much time there, but used high-ratio glides to land on shorter trees for foraging or nesting. Thus, flying squirrels use two different gliding behaviours depending on their immediate objective, where inefficient low-ratio glides are used to move to higher trees for continued gliding. This approach might be necessary for efficiency and safety in subsequent glides, because taller trees facilitate long-distance glides and significantly decrease energy costs and landing impact. Therefore, the location of tall trees in forests and/or average canopy height might alter glide path routes. This study provides important evidence that forest structure affects gliding patterns and provides insight on how forest management could influence the gliding locomotion of Siberian flying squirrels.

Thus, development of a curative treatment and strategies for early diagnosis and treatment are urgently needed. Pathological analysis of renal biopsy is the gold standard for the diagnosis and assessment of disease activity; however, immediate and frequent assessment based on biopsy specimens is difficult. Therefore, a simple and safe alternative is desirable. On the other hand, it is now widely accepted that multi-hit steps, including production of aberrantly glycosylated serum IgA1 (first hit), and IgG or IgA autoantibodies that recognize glycan containing epitopes on glycosylated serum IgA1 (second hit) and their subsequent immune complex formation (third hit) and glomerular deposition (fourth hit), are required for continued progression of IgAN. Although the prognostic and predictive values of several markers have been discussed elsewhere, we recently developed a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic method by measuring serum levels of glycosylated serum IgA1 and related IgA immune complex. In addition, we confirmed a significant correlation between serum levels of these essential effector molecules and disease activity after treatment, suggesting that each can be considered as a practical surrogate marker of therapeutic effects in this slowly progressive disease. Such a noninvasive diagnostic and activity assessment method using these disease-oriented specific biomarkers may be useful in the early diagnosis of and intervention in IgAN, with appropriate indication for treatment, and thus aid in the future development and dissemination of specific and curative treatments. Yashiro (1) Keywords: Key words: Gamma-globulin treatment -- Kawasaki disease -- Cardiac sequelae Abstract: The administration of intravenous I3-globulin (IVGG) for Kawasaki disease was investigated throughout Japan in 1993 by obtaining information from pediatric departments in 2652 hospitals that had more than 100 beds. Of 11,221 reported patients, 8958 patients (79.8%) received IVGG treatment. Of all the patients to whom IVGG was administered, the most common total dose was 1000 mg/kg (36.3%) followed by 2000 mg/kg (16.9%) and 1200 mg/kg (16.8%). The treatment was started in 53.8% by day 5 of the illness and in 83.7% by day 7. The proportion of those with cardiac sequelae was higher among patients administered &gt 2000 mg/kg or in those started on IVGG on day 9 of their illness or later. The possible reasons are (1) those who were more severely affected were treated with high-dose IVGG earlier or (2) IVGG does not effectively prevent cardiac sequelae. We concluded that there is a risk of unfavorable effects with IVGG regarding cardiac sequelae when the IVGG dose is &gt 2000 mg/kg or if IVGG is started on day 9 or later. We believe that only a randomized controlled trial, undertaken prospectively, can adequately address the question of the optimal use of IVGG. 28. Diurnal activity of juvenile Russian flying squirrels recorded by camera trapping

Abstract

We describe the diurnal behaviour in juvenile Russian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans) revealed by camera trapping. Photographs showed that juvenile Russian flying squirrels of up to approximately 30 days old are only active in daytime and often peeped out of the breeding cavity. In addition, juveniles of approximately 40 to 45 days old showed a cathemeral activity pattern: they investigated the immediate surroundings of their breeding cavity in both daytime and night-time. In contrast, older juveniles showed only nocturnal activities. These observations show for the first time that juveniles of wild Russian flying squirrels are active in the daytime when growing up, while gradually shifting to an exclusively nocturnal activity pattern when getting older. Meanwhile we emphasise that our observations concern only one litter.

Abstract

A compact recoil-proton counter telescope with two position sensitive proportional counters (PSPCs) for neutron spectrometry has been developed. This counter telescope consists of a radiator (a thin polyethylene film), two PSPCs used as [Delta]E detector, and an Si-SSD used as E detector. Using the position information extracted from two PSPCs, the three-dimensional trajectory of the recoil proton and the recoil angle can be determined event by event. The performance of this counter telescope was tested by the measurement of 7.2-MeV neutrons produced from D--D reactions. It was shown that the energy spectra of neutrons could be obtained by determining the energy of each incident neutron using a recoil angle. Abstract

Th2 cytokines, such as IL-4, IL-10, and IL-13, suppress proinflammatory cytokine production by monocytes/macrophages. Since monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) is presumed to play an important role in monocyte recruitment and activation during inflammatory and immune responses, we examined here the effects of these Th2 cytokines on MCP-1 production by human blood monocytes and alveolar macrophages. Unstimulated, highly purified blood monocytes did not produce MCP-1 spontaneously, while LPS treatment induced the production of MCP-1 and its mRNA expression. All Th2 cytokines tested suppressed LPS-induced MCP-1 production and its mRNA expression, although the suppressive effect of IL-13 was weaker than that of IL-4 or IL-10. In contrast, IL-10, but neither IL-4 nor IL-13, induced unstimulated peripheral blood monocytes to produce biologically active MCP-1 protein within 4 h, reaching a maximal level at 12 h. IL-10-induced MCP-1 production was reduced by pretreatment of IL-10 with anti-IL-10 Ab, negating the involvement of contaminated endotoxin. Moreover, IL-10 induced MCP-1 mRNA expression in unstimulated monocytes, independent of de novo protein synthesis. Furthermore, human alveolar macrophages produced MCP-1 spontaneously, and the production was inhibited by IL-4 or IL-13, but was augmented by IL-10. These findings suggest that IL-10 regulates MCP-1 production by monocytes/macrophages in a different way from other Th2 cytokines, such as IL-4 and IL-13, and contributes to host defense responses.

Abstract

A history of hypertension is a known risk factor for delirium in patients in intensive care units, but the effect of antihypertensive agents on delirium development is unclear. Nicardipine, a calcium channel blocker, is widely used in ICU as a treatment agent for hypertensive emergency. This study investigated the relationship between the administration of nicardipine hydrochloride and delirium development in patients under mechanical ventilation. We conducted a medical chart review of 103 patients, who were divided into two groups according to the use of nicardipine hydrochloride. The prevalence of delirium was compared with respect to factors such as age, sex, laboratory data, and medical history, by multivariate analysis. 21 patients (20.4 %) were treated with nicardipine hydrochloride in 103 patients. The treatment and non-treatment groups differed significantly in age (72 vs. 65 years) and history of high blood pressure (57% vs. 11%). Multivariate analysis revealed that patients in the treatment group developed delirium significantly less often than those in the non-treatment group (19% vs. 48%). These results suggested that treatment of high blood pressure with nicardipine hydrochloride is a possible method for preventing the development of delirium.

Abstract

Urbanization has caused significant behavioural modifications in wild animals. Change in anti-predator behaviour is the most widespread example across different taxa in urban areas, which is probably due to a decrease in predation pressure and habituation towards humans. Seasonality or phenology has also been modified by urbanization since some resources in urban environments are highly controlled, for example, artificial feeding. Under natural conditions, anti-predator responses vary with seasonal variability in environmental and individual conditions. However, resource stability possibly reduces the seasonality of anti-predator behaviours in urban animals. Here, we compare the seasonal difference of flight initiation distance ( FID), a measurement of anti-predator response, in Eurasian red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris between urban and rural areas in the Tokachi region, Hokkaido, Japan. Rural squirrels possessed FIDs two to three times longer than those of urban squirrels. We also found squirrels in rural areas lowered FID in autumn, but no seasonal difference was observed in urban squirrels. Our results suggest that continuous supplementary feeding may have buffered the seasonality in anti-predator response. In addition, strong habituation to humans may allow urban red squirrels to correctly assess human activity as benign rather than reacting unnecessarily. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

45. Prebiotic synthesis and reactions of nucleosides and nucleotides

Abstract

The potential of diiminosuccinonitrile (DISN) as a prebiotic phosphorylating agent is studied. This compound is formed readily by the oxidation of diaminomaleonitrile, a tetramer of HCN. DISN is shown to produce the cyclization of 3'-adenosine monophosphate to adenosine 2',3'-cyclic phosphate in up to 40 percent yield. The DISN-mediated phosphorylation of uridine to uridine monophosphate is determined not to proceed efficiently in aqueous solution. The reaction of DISN and BrCN with uridine-5'-phosphate and uridine is found to result in the formation of 2,2'-anhydronucleotides and 2,2'-anhydronucleosides, respectively, and other reaction products resulting from an initial reaction at the 2' and 3'-hydroxyl groups. Homoionic montmorillonites were employed to study the clay mineral catalysis of the cyclization of adenosine-3'-phosphate.

Abstract

It was learned that when carbon suboxide polymers react with hydroxylamine in modified sea water the amino acids glycine and lysine are produced and that they react with urea to produce nucleic acid-like substances. These results lead to the supposition that it is possible that carbon suboxide polymers may have accumulated in the primeval sea some three or more billion years ago and were transformed into the procursors of living molecules.
