Since its emergence in December 2019, corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted several countries, affecting more than 90 thousand patients and making it a global public threat. The routes of transmission are direct contact, and droplet and possible aerosol transmissions. Due to the unique nature of dentistry, most dental procedures generate significant amounts of droplets and aerosols, posing potential risks of infection transmission. Understanding the significance of aerosol transmission and its implications in dentistry can facilitate the identification and correction of negligence in daily dental practice. In addition to the standard precautions, some special precautions that should be implemented during an outbreak have been raised in this review.

Limb hemiplegia is one of the common sequelae of stroke. Physical therapy-based rehabilitation training can rapidly improve limb functioning and muscle strength. This study investigated the effect of physical therapy on the recovery of upper limb motor function by employing a literature search and meta-analysis.We searched Embase, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials library, Wiley online library, PubMed, Ovid, and Clinicaltrials.org for randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies and performed an electronic search with the keyword combinations 'physical therapy/rehabilitation''stroke/post-stroke''upper extremity/upper limb'. After screening the literature for inclusion criteria and assessing the risk of bias, Revman 5.4 software was used for the analysis and to obtain forest and funnel plots.A total of 15 RCTs with 1,081 patients were included in the quantitative analysis for this study. The meta-analysis results showed that compared with conventional therapy, physical therapy improved the upper limb Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity (FMA) scores in convalescent stroke patients (MD =7.27, 95% CI: 4.23-10.32, Z=4.68, P0.00001), and increased the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores (MD =18.82, 95% CI: 6.34-31.30, Z=2.96, P=0.003), the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) scores (MD =8.84, 95% CI: 6.53-11.15, Z=7.50, P0.00001), and the Box and Block Test (BBT) scores (MD =6.11, 95% CI: 1.18-11.04, Z=2.43, P=0.02) of patients during the rehabilitation period.The use of physical therapy-based rehabilitation training in the recovery period for stroke patients with hemiplegia can improve upper limb movement ability, increase muscle strength, reduce limb pain, and improve the quality of life.

The outbreaks of fungal diseases in cultured fish have been severe in recent years, which is harmful to the healthy and sustainable development of fish farming. In this study, an investigation was conducted for significant fungal infections of 12 species of fish in four regions in Xinjiang, China, to understand the distribution of local fish fungal pathogens. Twenty-six fungal strains with pathogenicity were isolated, and the challenge experiment showed that eight strains from Changji area had high infection rate to fish eggs. Based on internal transcribed spacer sequence data and molecular analysis, the 26 strains were classified into nine different species of six fungal genera. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all strains were divided into two clades, namely Cluster 1 (contains only the genus Mucor) and Cluster 2 (consists of five small branches), and the distribution of strains from the same region was scattered in two clusters. There is no strict host selectivity for these fungi to infect fish. Mucor sp. are the main fungal pathogen of fish in these four regions, whereas Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Carassius auratus are two types of fish that were susceptible to pathogen. In addition, the environmental adaptability experiments showed that eight highly pathogenic strains have different adaptability to the environment, and their optimum temperature and pH were 25°C and 7.0, respectively, whereas the concentration of NaCl was negatively correlated with the growth of strains. Therefore, these results indicated that the coinfection of multiple fungal pathogens in a culture region should be considered in the future study.

Pterostilbene (Pt) is a natural polyphenol found in blueberries and several grape varieties. Pt's pharmacological importance was well documented. Nevertheless, the depigmenting effects are not demonstrated. We evaluated the Pt's depigmenting effects through autophagy induction in B16F10 cells and inhibition of UVA (3 J/cm2)-irradiated α-MSH in keratinocyte HaCaT cells via Nrf2-mediated antioxidant pathways. Pt (2.5–5μM) attenuated ROS production and downregulated the POMC/α-MSH pathway in HaCaT cells. The conditioned medium-derived from UVA-irradiated HaCaT pretreated with Pt suppressed melanogenesis in B16F10 through MITF-CREB-tyrosinase pathway downregulation. Interestingly, Pt-induced HaCaT autophagy was revealed by enhanced LC3-II accumulation, p62/SQSTM1 activation, and AVO formation. Pt significantly decreased melanosome gp100 but increased LC3-II levels in HaCaT cells exposed to B16F10-derived melanin. Pt activated and facilitated the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway in HaCaT cells leading to increased HO-1, γ-GCLC, and NQO-1 antioxidant protein expression. ERK, AMPK, and ROS pathways mediate the Nrf2 activation. However, Nrf2 knockdown suppressed Pt's antioxidant ability leading to uncontrolled ROS and α-MSH levels after UVA-irradiation suggested the essentiality of the Nrf2 pathway. Moreover, in α-MSH-stimulated B16F10 cells, Pt (10–30 μM) downregulated the MC1R, MITF, tyrosinase, TRP-1/-2, and melanin expression. Further, Pt showed potent anti-melanogenic effects through autophagy induction mechanism in B16F10 cells, verified by increased LC3-II/p62 levels, AVO formation, and Beclin-1/Bcl-2 ratio, decreased ATG4B levels and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. Transmission electron microscopy provided direct evidence by showing autophagosomes engulfing melanosomes following Pt treatment in α-MSH-stimulated B16F10 cells. Moreover, Pt-induced anti-melanogenic activity through the downregulation of CREB-MITF pathway-mediated TRP-1/-2, tyrosinase expressions, melanosome formation, and melanin synthesis was substantially reversed due to 3-MA (autophagy inhibitor) pretreatment or LC3 silencing in B16F10 cells. In vivo results also confirmed that Pt-inhibited tyrosinase expression/activity and endogenous pigmentation in the zebrafish model. Yimeng black goat is one of the national breeds of geographical indication in China and is one of the key protected local livestock and poultry breeds of Shandong province. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Yimeng black goat was investigated in this study (GenBank accession no. MT134111). The mitogenome (16,640 bp) consisted of a non-coding control region (D-loop region), two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence and the neighbour-joining tree of the Yimeng black goat would contribute to further study in genetic mechanism and phylogenomic research of goats.

Triplophysa yarkandensis is a specific cobitidae species that is endemic to Xinjiang Tarim River basin, China. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of T. yarkandensis from Bosten Lake was determined in this study (Accession number MN821008). The mitogenome (16,552 bp) consists of 22 tRNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, and 1 control region (D-loop region). The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the T. yarkandensis provides an important data set for further study in genetic mechanism and classification.

Objective: To assess whether supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) during pregnancy alleviate preeclampsia symptoms and the underlying mechanism in the rats with preeclampsia. Methods: Forty-five pregnant Wistar rats were equally divided into three groups randomly and received subcutaneous saline injection (control group, n = 15) or 200 mg/kg L-NAME injection to induce preeclampsia symptoms (PE group, n = 30). The PE rats were treated by distilled water (PE+DW group, n = 15) and CoQ10 (PE+CoQ10 group, n = 15) on day 15 to 21 of gestation randomly. Physiological characteristics such as urine volume, total urine protein, blood pressure, number and weight of pups were recorded. Fluorescent dye was used to detect mitochondrial membrane potential in placenta. Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR was used to detect the expression of mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) in placenta. Results: There was no statistic difference among all the three groups on day 10 of gestation in SBP and 24-h proteinuria (P > 0.05). Whereas, SBP and 24-h proteinuria were significantly higher in PE group than control group on day 15 and 21 of gestation (P < 0.05). SBP and 24-h proteinuria were significantly lower in PE+CoQ10 group than PE+DW group on day 21 of gestation (P < 0.05). The number and weight of normal pups were significantly lower in PE group than the control group (P < 0.05), which were most notably in distilled water group, and the number and weight of normal pups were markedly bigger in PE+CoQ10 group rats compared to PE+DW (P < 0.05). The PE+CoQ10 group showed a significantly higher in level of mitochondrial membrane potential than PE+DW group. The expression of mtDNA was significantly higher in the PE+CoQ10 group compared with PE+DW group (P < 0.05). Conclusions: CoQ10 can alleviate preeclampsia symptoms and enhance the function of mitochondria in the placenta.

Natural disaster vulnerability can intuitively reflect the susceptibility of an area to environmental changes. Better understanding the spatial distribution of natural disaster vulnerability is a critical process for taking effective adaptation and management. Although significant achievements have been made in disaster vulnerability, few studies are known about natural disaster vulnerability at the national scale, especially from the typical natural disaster events in China. In this study, with normalizing selected indicators and calculating vulnerability index, we analyzed the spatial distribution of natural disasters vulnerability during 2010–2017 using the geospatial techniques. The results showed that natural disaster vulnerability has certain spatial differences, but different natural disaster can occur in the same area during the study period. Drought disaster can occur in all regions of China, especially in Inner Mongolia. Flood disaster is mainly concentrated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River Basin. The wind and storm disaster is chiefly in the northern regions in China. The freezing disaster is widely distributed in China. Furthermore, the regions with low vulnerability were primarily distributed in the eastern coastal region, indicating that the rapid development of economy and technology can resist or mitigate natural disaster to a certain extent. This study offers a solution to study natural disasters and provides scientific basis for disaster prevention and mitigation actions.

3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid (EAA) is an ether-derivative of ascorbic acid, known to inhibit tyrosinase activity, and is widely used in skincare formulations. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms underlying the EAA's effects are poorly understood. Here, the anti-melanogenic activity of EAA was demonstrated through Nrf2-mediated α-MSH inhibition in UVA-irradiated keratinocytes (HaCaT) and autophagy induction and inhibition of α-MSH-stimulated melanogenesis in melanocytes (B16F10). EAA pretreatment increased the HaCaT cell viability but suppressed ROS-mediated p53/POMC/α-MSH pathways in UVA-irradiated cells. Further, the conditioned medium from EAA-pretreated and UVA-irradiated HaCaT cells suppressed the MITF-CREB-tyrosinase pathways leading to the inhibition of melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells. EAA treatment increased nuclear Nrf2 translocation via the p38, PKC, and ROS pathways leading to HO-1, γ-GCLC, and NQO-1 antioxidant expression in HaCaT cells. However, Nrf2 silencing reduced the EAA-mediated anti-melanogenic activity, evidenced by impaired antioxidant gene expression and uncontrolled ROS (H202) generation following UVA irradiation. In B16F10 cells, EAA-induced autophagy was shown by enhanced LC3-II levels, AVO formation, Beclin-1 upregulation, and activation of p62/SQSTM1. Further, EAA-induced anti-melanogenic activity was substantially decreased in autophagy inhibitor (3-MA) pretreated or LC3 knockdown B16F10 cells. Notably, transmission electron microscopy data showed increased melanosome-engulfing autophagosomes in EAA-treated B16F10 cells. Moreover, EAA also down-regulated MC1R, TRP-1/-2, tyrosinase expressions, and melanin synthesis by suppressing the cAMP-CREB-mediated MITF expression in B16F10 cells stimulated with α-MSH. In vivo studies on the zebrafish model further confirmed that EAA inhibited tyrosinase expression/activity and endogenous pigmentation. In conclusion, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid is an effective skin-whitening agent and could be used as a topical agent for cosmetic purposes.

Glioma is the most prevalent solid tumor in the central nervous system (CNS). Recently, it has been indicated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) substantially adjust the development of a variety of human cancers. In the present study, it was found and verified via microarray analysis that lncRNA PSMA3-AS1 exhibited a high expression in glioma tissues and cell lines. Then CCK-8, 5-Ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU) staining, plate clone assay, Transwell assay, Western blotting and nude mouse model were adopted to verify PSMA3-AS1’s effects on glioma. Knockdown of PSMA3-AS1 inhibited the migration, proliferation and invasion of glioma cells in vivo and in vitro. Besides, PSMA3-AS1 bound to miR-302a-3p directly reduced the expression of miR-302a-3p, thus functioning as an endogenous sponge confirmed by luciferase reporter assay and bioinformatics analysis. PSMA3-AS1 knockdown remarkably enhanced the role of miR-302a-3p overexpression in cell behaviors in glioma. Moreover, these assays also confirmed that RAB22A was a target of miR-302a-3p. In this research, therefore, the PSMA3-AS1/miR-302a-3p/RAB22A pathway regulatory axis may be revealed in the pathogenesis of glioma, and PSMA3-AS1 can be used as an underlying target for the treatment and prognosis of glioma.

To address the controversial issue of the toxicity of dental alloys and silver nanoparticles in medical applications, an in vivo-like LO2 3-D model was constructed within polyvinylidene fluoride hollow fiber materials to mimic the microenvironment of liver tissue. The use of microscopy methods and the measurement of liver-specific functions optimized the model for best cell performances and also proved the superiority of the 3-D LO2 model when compared with the traditional monolayer model. Toxicity tests were conducted using the newly constructed model, finding that four dental castings coated with silver nanoparticles were toxic to human hepatocytes after cell viability assays. In general, the toxicity of both the castings and the coated silver nanoparticles aggravated as time increased, yet the nanoparticles attenuated the general toxicity by preventing metal ion release, especially at high concentrations.

Yimeng scorpion is a specific geographical indication breed of Yimeng Mountain area in China. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Yimeng scorpion was determined for the first time (Accession number MN597087). It is mitochondrial genome (14,840 bp) contains 13 protein-coding genes, 21tRNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and one large non-coding region (a possible control region). Moreover, tRNA-ASP-loss was observed from the Yimeng scorpion mitochondrial genome. The mitochondrial genome sequence of the Yimeng scorpion enriches data resource for further research on genetic mechanism and classification.

Drought disaster space agglomeration assessment is one of the important components of meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation. Agriculture affected by drought disaster is not only a serious threat to world food security, but also an obstacle to sustainable development. Additionally, China is an important agricultural import and export country in the world. Therefore, we used the global Moran’s I and the local indicators of spatial autocorrelation (LISA) to reveal the spatial agglomeration of agricultural drought disaster in China from1978 to 2016, respectively. The results showed that China’s agricultural drought disaster presents local spatial autocorrelation of geographical agglomeration at national level during the study period. The spatial agglomeration regions of China’s agricultural drought disaster were in Inner Mongolia, Jilin province, Heilongjiang province, Liaoning province, Shanxi province, Hebei province, Shandong province, Shaanxi province and Henan province, indicating that agricultural drought disaster mainly distributed in North and Northwest China, especially occurred in the Yellow River Basin and its north areas. We also found that the overall movement direction of agricultural drought disaster agglomeration regions was northwest, and the maximum moving distance was 722.16 km. Our results might provide insight in early warning and prevention for drought disaster.

Objective To describe a method to fabricate donor tooth replica to assist surgeons in preparation of recipient socket during tooth autotransplantation. Materials and methods A total of 28 compromised molars in 27 patients were transplanted with third molars using computer-aided rapid prototyping (CARP) technique. Surgery time and extra-alveolar time were documented. Postoperatively, the distance between cervix of transplanted tooth and the alveolar wall was measured. The degree of postoperative pain experienced was assessed with visual analog scale at day 1, 3, and 7. Results From 28 clinical cases, the average extra-alveolar time and surgery time were 2.5 minutes (±1.3) and 44 minutes (±6.8), respectively. Postoperatively, the average distance between cervix of transplanted tooth and the alveolar wall was 0.87 mm (±0.15) at the mesial-cervix, 0.95 mm (±0.17) at the distal-cervix, 0.88 mm (±0.18) at the buccal-cervix, and 0.95 mm (±0.13) at the lingual-cervix. The value of visual analog scale score significantly decreased from day 1 to day 3. Conclusions CARP is a reliable technique for fabrication of tooth like surgical replicas in conventional autotransplantation. Clinical significance CARP technique minimized extra-oral time, reduced iatrogenic damage, and consequently increased the survival rate of tooth autotransplantation.

Rational Chromobacterium violaceum is a motile gram-negative bacterium. This bacterium commonly grows in tropical or subtropical areas in sewage and can cause opportunistic infections. Patient concerns A 50-year-old Chinese man had a skin ulcer in the middle of his left leg in front of the tibia. The diameter of the wound was 3.0 cm, the exudation was obvious, and necrotic tissue was attached to the wound. One week previously, he was working in a field where he accidentally punctured his left leg. Diagnosis C violaceum infection was diagnosed as per the results of pathogen culture from the infection site. Interventions He was treated with piperacillin/tazobactam (3.375 g/12 h iv) and levofloxacin (0.5 g/24 h iv) for 5 days. Outcomes The patient showed good response to therapy and was discharged on day 18 after wound healing. Lessons C violaceum rarely infects humans. When an infection is suspected, samples should be immediately sent for microbial culture. Timely treatment on the basis of drug sensitivity test results can prevent further complications.

In the present study, 61 strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from ten spontaneously fermented rose jams and were screened through a series of in vitro probiotic tests, including resistance to low pH, bile salts, simulated gastric and simulated pancreatic digestion, as well as antibiotic susceptibility. Five isolates showed good probiotic activity and were identified as P. pentosaceus MP3, P. pentosaceus MP11, P. pentosaceus MP13, P. pentosaceus MP16, and P. pentosaceus MY8 by 16 S rRNA sequencing. Among them, P. pentosaceus MP13 had the best characteristics, which were similar to or even better than the reference probiotic L. plantarum ATCC 8014. In addition, the technological performance of P. pentosaceus MP13 as a rose jam starter was evaluated. Compared with the spontaneously fermented control (without inoculum), rose jam fermented with MP13 increased anthocyanin, total flavonoid total phenol, and DPPH contents in the rose jam, and improved the flavor of the rose jam. These results indicate that the MP13 strain has potential probiotic properties, and is suitable to be used as a candidate probiotic bacteria and starter culture to improve the traditional fermentation process and develop functional foods.

The aim of this study was to research the changes in cytotoxicity and antibacterial properties after silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were incorporated into the surface coating of dental alloys. AgNPs were attached to cobalt chromium alloys and pure titanium using a hydrothermal method, according to the reaction: AgNO3+NaBH4→ Ag+1/2H2+1/2B2H6+NaNO3. A 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the alloys when in contact with osteogenic precursor cells (MC3T3-E1) from mice and mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) from rats. The antibacterial properties of dental alloys incorporating three different concentrations (10, 4, and 2 μmol/L) of AgNPs were tested on Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Streptococcus mutans (MS). High cytotoxicity values were observed for all dental alloys that contained 0% of AgNPs (the control groups). The incorporation of AgNPs reduced cytotoxicity values. No significant difference was observed for antibacterial performance when comparing dental alloys containing AgNPs to the respective control groups. The results demonstrated that the cobalt chromium alloys and pure titanium all had cytotoxicity to MC3T3-E1 and BMSC and that the incorporation of AgNPs could reduce this cytotoxicity. The concentrations of AgNPs adopted in this study were found to have no antibacterial action against SA or MS.

A highly sensitive amperometric sulfadiazine sensor fabricated by electrochemical deposition of poly(cobalt tetraaminophthalocyanine) (poly(Co(II)TAPc)) on the surface of a multi-walled carbon nanotubes-Nafion (MWCNTs-Nafion) modified electrode is described. This electrode showed a very attractive performance by combining the advantages of Co(II)TAPc, MWCNTs, and Nafion. Compared with the bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and the MWCNTs-Nafion modified electrode, the electrocatalytic activity of poly(Co(II)TAPc)-coated MWCNTs-Nafion GCE generated greatly improved electrochemical detections toward sulfadiazine including low oxidation potential, high current responses, and good anti-fouling performance. The oxidation peak currents of sulfadiazine obtained on the new modified electrode increased linearly while increasing the concentration of sulfadiazine from 0.5 to 43.5 μmol/L with the detection limit of 0.17 μmol/L.

A convenient competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for ciprofloxacin (CPFX) was developed by using rabbit monoclonal antibodies (RabMAbs) against a hapten-protein conjugate of CPFX-bovine serum albumin (BSA). The indirect competitive ELISA of CPFX had a concentration at 50% inhibition (IC(50)) of 1.47 ng/ml and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.095 ng/ml. The mAb exhibited some cross-reactivity, however, not so high with enrofloxacin (28.8%), ofloxacin (13.1%), norfloxacin (11.0%), fleroxacin (22.6%), and pefloxacin (20.4%). And it showed almost no cross-reactivity with other antibiotics or sulfonamides evaluated in this study. The competitive ELISA kit developed here could be used as a screening tool to detect and control illegal addition of CPFX in food products. This kit had been applied to milk detection and the recovery rates from samples spiked by CPFX were in a range of 63.02%-84.60%, with coefficients of variation of less than 12.2%.

Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) is a rare and endangered species, and also an important resource for the sturgeon aquaculture industry. To understand molecular characterization of Chinese sturgeon gonadotropins (GTHs), we cloned the full-length cDNAs of gonadotropin subunits common alpha (GTH-alpha), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from a pituitary cDNA library of mature female. Two subtypes of GTH-alpha were identified. The nucleotide sequences of A. sinensis common alpha I (AsGTH-alpha I), common alpha II (AsGTH-alpha II), FSH beta (AsFSH beta) and LH beta (AsLH beta) subunit cDNAs are 345, 363, 387 and 414 bp in length, and encode mature peptides of 115, 121, 129 and 138 aa, respectively. Then, three polyclonal antibodies were prepared from the in vitro expressed AsGTH-alpha I, AsFSH beta and AsLH beta mature proteins, respectively. Significant expression differences were revealed between immature and mature sturgeon pituitaries. Western blot detection and immunofluoresence localization revealed the existence of three-gonadotropin subunits (AsGTH-alpha, AsFSH beta and AsLH beta) in mature sturgeon pituitaries, but only AsFSH beta was detected in immature individual pituitaries during early stages in the sturgeon life, and obvious difference was observed between males and females. The Ag nanoparticles colloid was prepared by pulsed laser ablation for different time in 10 ml distilled water without any surface active agent, and it was analysed by means of UV-visible spectrophotometer and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the ablation efficiency and absorbance increased fast and shift to higher energies with increasing ablation time from 5 to 10 min, then increased slowly from 10 to 20 min, and increased fast again from 20 to 25 min. The morphologies of most Ag nanoparticles were nearly spherical. The average diameter and its distribution decreased from 5 to 7.5 min, then increased from 7.5 to 15 min, and decreased from 15 to 25 min.

Simple, reliable and sensitive analytical methods to determine anticariogenic agents, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners contained in commercial gargles are necessary for evaluating their effectiveness, safety, and quality. An ion chromatography (IC) method has been described to analyze simultaneously eight anions including fluoride, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, monofluorophosphate, glycerophosphate (anticariogenic agents), sorbate (a preservative), and saccharin (an artificial sweetener) in gargles. In this IC system, we applied a mobile phased gradient elution with KOH, separation by IonPac AS18 columns, and suppressed conductivity detection. Optimized analytical conditions were further evaluated for accuracy. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the inter-day's retention time and peak area of all species were less than 0.938% and 8.731%, respectively, while RSDs of 5-day retention time and peak area were less than 1.265% and 8.934%, respectively. The correlation coefficients for targeted analytes ranged from 0.999 7 to 1.000 0. The spiked recoveries for the anions were 90% approximately 102.5%. We concluded that the method can be applied for comprehensive evaluation of commercial gargles.

The purpose of this study is to explore the osteoinductivity of the composite materials (calcium phosphate ceramics/PLA or collagen composites) with similar physical character of osteoinductive calcium phosphate ceramics and the influence of the chemical composition of the composite materials on osteoinductivity, and also to provide an experimental evidence for optimizing the design of the composite materials. Two kinds of composite materials were prepared. One (BCP/PLA) is fabricated with different ratio of BCP (biphasic calcium phosphate) ceramics powder and PDLLA powder through the particulateleaching technique. The other (BCP/collagen) is that BCP ceramics sintered at 1250oC and modified with collagen. The porous materials cylinders with Φ 5×8 mm were prepared. SEM was used to observe the microstructure and physical morphology of the composite materials. The two groups of composite materials cylinders were implanted in the dorsal muscles of four dogs. Six samples of each group were implanted in each dog respectively. The specimens were harvested at 2, 4, 12 and 24 weeks post operation, and thin decalcified sections were prepared for light microscopy (LM) analysis to evaluate their osteoinductivity and compare the capability of osteoinduction. The fibro-tissue and bone-like tissue were observed in the two composites, but no obvious bone formation was found in the tested periods. The results indicated that the composite materials could modify the mechanical property of ceramics. However, if the composite materials were biodegraded soon, new bone could not form into the scaffold, and the calcium phosphate should be the major component of osteoinductive materials.

For preparing fluorinated quinolone antibiotic medicine locally used in stomatology, simultaneous determination of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enoxacin was carried out by multiphase ion chromatography with fluorescence detection. Quinolone antibiotics were separated by Dionex OmniPac PAX-500 column with an eluent of 15 mmol/L H(2)SO(4) and 35% methanol (v/v) at a flow-rate of 1.0 ml/min and detected with fluorescence with excitation and emission wave lengths of 347 nm and 420 nm respectively. The detection limits (S/N=3) of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and enoxacin were 50, 105 and 80 ng/ml respectively. The relative standard deviations of retention time, peak area and peak height were less than 1.1% and good linear relationship resulted. The developed method was applied to pharmaceutical formulations and biological fluids.

The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of repairing massive bone defect with in vivo tissue engineering(TE) bone, and to provide experimental evidence for the application of in vivo TE bone into clinic in the future. Six calcium phosphate ceramics (Ca-P ceramics) columns were prepared, and then immersed in dynamic revised simulated body fluid (RSBF). 72 hours later, the bone-like apatite was formed on the surface and pore walls of ceramics. Three dogs were used in this study. Two ceramic columns were implanted bilaterally in the femoral muscles of each dog to construct living bone graft of in vivo TE bone. 6 weeks after implantation, they were transplanted to the box-like bone defects sites created in bilateral mandible of the same animals. The dogs were sacrificed at 8, 12 week after operation respectively. Samples were harvested for gross observation, X-ray examination, tetracycline fluorescence labeling, SPECT and histological observation. These results demonstrated that as a living bone graft, in vivo TE bone participated in the bone metabolism of host, and integrated with the host bone. It is feasible to reconstruct box-like bone defect of mandible with the in vivo TE bone.

The purpose of this study was to develop a feasible technique for bone reparation and further explore the possible applications of Ca-P ceramics in segmental load-bearing bone reparation. HA/TCP ceramics sintered at 1250oC were fabricated into tube-like columns of Φ15mm×30mm with a central canal of Φ4mm. Bone-like apatite was precipitated on the ceramics before implantation. 12 male dogs were used in this study, and a 30mm long segmental bone defect was made in the middle of one femur of each dog. Supported by the fixation of net-cage-structured TC4, the osteoinductive Ca-P ceramic cylinder was used to repair the segmental defect in dog femur. Stress was analyzed by ANSYS. The morphology recovery, function restoration, gait analyses and bone regeneration were evaluated. After implantation at 2, 4 and 8 months, the specimens were harvested respectively. The specimens were evaluated with morphological observation and mechanical testing. Stress analysis showed that the thickness of TC4 net cage was 0.3mm. The morphology recovery of the experimental animal was good and function was restored after 2 months gradually. Aided by stress analysis and by optimizing the design and fixation of implants, Ca-P materials with excellent osteoinductivity could be applied in repairing segmental bone defects.

The neuropeptide pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) has been proposed to have a role in nociception. Here we have used the formalin test, thermal laser stimulation and mechanical von Frey stimulation to investigate possible alteration of PAC1-/- mice nociceptive behaviour. Our finding, that PAC1-/- mice have a substantial, 75% decrease in nociceptive response during the late phase, provides clear evidence that the specific PACAP-receptor PAC1 is involved in the mediation of nociceptive responses during chronic conditions such as inflammation. PAC1-/- mice had small or no changes in the response to mechanical and thermal laser stimulation. This suggests a limited, if any, involvement of PAC1 in nociception after short-lasting stimuli. Injury-induced changes in DRG neuropeptide expression were more pronounced in PAC1-/- mice, implying neuroregulatory functions of PAC1.

Most fetal heart rate patterns can be interpreted accurately so that management decisions can be made correctly. How-ever, few fetal heart rate patterns are so ambiguous that the obstetricians cannot interpret them precisely. A 27-year-old woman at 38 weeks' gestation in her first pregnancy was admitted with heavy vaginal bleeding and decrease in fetal movements. Fetal status was indeterminate according to an indefinite fetal heart rate tracing with regular decelerations. After emergent cesarean delivery, a ruptured vasa previa, traversing the fetal membrane, unsupported by either the umbilical cord or placental tissue, was clearly identified. Treatment decision-making is challenging in such patient with indefinite fetal heart rate pattern because limited data exist to guide management. Well-designed studies are needed to clarify the uncertainty about the effect of indefinite fetal heart rate pattern on clinical outcomes.
