A new column loaded with modified silica gel-chitosan is proposed as a preconcentration system for adsorption of trace cadmium (II) and copper (II). The optimization steps were performed under dynamic conditions, involving pH, sample flow rate, eluent selection, concentration, volume, and flow rate. Trace Cd(II) and Cu(II) were quantitatively adsorbed by the modified silica gel-chitosan. The metal ions adsorbed on the separation column were eluted with 0.1 M HNO3 and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Under the optimum conditions, this method allowed the determination of cadmium and copper with limits of detection (LOD) of 20 ng L−1 and 38 ng L−1, respectively. The relative standard deviation values (RSDs) for 1.0 mg L−1 of cadmium and 1.0 mg L−1 of copper were 2.62% and 2.85%, respectively.

Sophisticated ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) use vision based methods for detection and keeping track of ahead driving cars. With thus acquired data it is possible to implement e.g. following up functions to automatically keep equal distance to ahead driving vehicles or avoid collisions with obstacles ahead. Known vision based methods for detection and tracking of vehicles use its underneath shadow on the road. The main drawbacks of those methods are the detection and identification of a shadow belonging to a vehicle is neither reliable nor robust, and the thereto required processing of the camera images is very expensive concerning processing time. To improve reliability and detectability we propose here to use an approach which is different from the known methods a nonparametric one; to improve processing speed we propose to apply diversity-sampling to condense the image data before processing it.

The paper describes an autonomous mobile robot named Robotino®, and how it is used for education of Bachelor-students in the majors AES (Automotive Engineering & Service) as well as in MT (Mechatronics) in CDHAW, Tongji University. A fine positioning project using image processing is introduced, and vision-based functions from Robotino®View are presented. It is sketched out how this system also can be used as a research platform for automotive assistance systems.

This paper addresses the problem of dissimilarity measurement and incorporates an auto-correlogram operator into probabilistic tracking. Perceptual similarity measurement based upon color correlogram is proposed to weigh the candidates and obtain the expectation state vector of tracked vehicles. The object color is represented in perceptually better-organized HSV color space, which produced improvement over the original method that used in the RGB color space. Properly quantized HSV color space improved the efficiency of auto-correlogram computation and robustness to changes in color content and variations in illumination. Experimental results demonstrate that the efficiency of HSV color correlogram in weighing samples is better than that of RGB auto-correlogram and HSV color histogram in traffic scene applications.

This paper examined the requirements of economy, industry and society for the education of engineers in the field of automotive engineering/service (AES). It introduced a novel engineering education model and investigates the effects at its implementation in a Sino-German educational research project in Tongji University. From three main requirements for engineers in automotive industry, it discussed the orientation and features of AES which focus on application-oriented, multi-disciplinary, and intercultural education. The objective of AES is to educate competent engineers meeting industrial requirements and acquiring a double degree as Bachelor of Science at CDHAW and as Bachelor of Engineering at the German partner universities of applied sciences. To guarantee the quality of bachelor-level engineers on knowledge, know-how, engineering competence and soft skills, this education model integrated a useful operation conception from curriculum design, bilingualism, multi-disciplinary and application-oriented education, education structure, and other resources of teaching and combined them into a system. Out of the education model we derived the effects for students, university staffs, and related companies, and the challenges from the implementation at the Sino-German College of Applied Sciences (Chinesisch-Deutsche Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften, for short CDHAW in German language) of Tongji University. The education model and its positive effects can be successfully used for reference to international engineering education reform and practice.

The paper describes how the theory-oriented education principles of China’s universities are combined with the practical-oriented education methods of Germany’s universities of applied sciences in CDHAW (Chinesisch-Deutsche Hochschule fur Angewandte Wissenschaften), Tongji University. As one of four majors in CDHAW, Automotive Engineering and Service (AES) translates those theoretical and practical requirements into an integrated new education framework. After seven years implementation, AES, as an emerging inter-discipline gained a good education evaluation from AQAS (Agentur fur Qualitatssicherung durch Akkreditierung von Studiengangen) due to its own practical-oriented education model and good educational results.
