4. Grazing intensity on the plant diversity of alpine meadow in the eastern Tibetan plateau

Abstract

Because ofthe remoteness and harsh conditions of the high-altitude rangelands on the eastern Tibetan Plateau, the relationship between yak grazing and plant diversity has not been so clear although livestock increase was thought as the main issue leading to the degradation of rangeland. In the debate of rangeland degradation, biodiversity loss has been assumed as one of the indicators in the last two decades. In this paper authors measured the effects of different grazing intensities on the plant diversity and the structure of Kobresia pygmaea community in the case-study area, northwestern Sichuan. The results indicated that plant diversity of alpine meadow has different changing trends respectively with the change of grazing intensity and seasons. In June the highest plant diversity occurred in the intensively grazed (HG) plots, but in July and September species biodiversity index of slightly grazed (LG) plots is higher than other experimental treatments. In August the intermediate grazed (IG) plots has the highest biodiversity index. Moreover, it was found that intensively grazing always leads to the increase of plant density, but meanwhile the decrease of community height, coverage and biomass. Over-grazing can change the community structure and lead to the succession from Kobresia pygmaea dominated community to Poa pratensis dominated. Analyzing results comprehensively, it can be suggested that the relationship between grazing intensity and plant diversity is not linear, i.e. diversity index is not as good as other characteristics of community structure to evaluate rangeland degradation on the high altitude situation. The change of biodiversity is so complicated that it can not be explained with the simple corresponding causality.

16. Active Acoustic Excitation Method for Leak Detection of Buried Gas Pipelines Based on Cavity Resonance Reflection

Abstract

This article presents an active acoustic excitation method for leak detection of buried gas pipelines based on cavity resonance reflection. The principles of gas leakage in pipelines are analyzed, including the gas passage model and the gas cavity model. The principle of Helmholtz resonator is employed to establish the cavity model. For the cavity model, the relationships between cavity resonance frequency, acoustic impedance, sound pressure amplification, and leakage damage size are derived. The resonant effect of the gas cavity on the acoustic signal is considered in this study to solve the problem that the echo signal after long distance propagation and reflection becomes very weak. Numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate the relationships between acoustic reflection coefficient of the leak hole size, cavity volume, and pipe wall thickness. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a pipeline experimental rig with a length of 100 m is constructed. Sound waves are generated by a speaker and reflected echoes are received by a microphone. The cavity resonance reflection and echo characteristics of different leak hole size, different transmitting acoustic frequency, and different cavity volume are analyzed. The empirical mode decomposition (EMD) algorithm is used to decompose and reconstruct the echo signals to eliminate the noise interference in the pipeline system. An echo time-distance conversion method is used to visualize the locations of the leak hole and welds. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively detect the leak holes and welds in the pipeline.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the associations of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) time and sedentary (SED) time with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and multifactorial (i.e., blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)) control status among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in China. A cross-sectional analysis of 9152 people with type 2 diabetes from the Multifactorial Intervention on Type 2 Diabetes (MIDiab) study was performed. Patients were grouped according to their self-reported MVPA time (low, < 150 min·week−1; moderate, 150 to < 450 min·week−1; high, ≥ 450 min·week−1) and SED time (low, < 4 h·d–1; moderate, 4 to < 8 h·d–1; high, ≥ 8 h·d–1). Participants who self-reported a history of CVD were identified as having a CVD risk. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of CVD risk and multifactorial control status associated with MVPA time and SED time were estimated using mixed-effect logistic regression models, adjusting for China’s geographical region characteristics. The participants had a mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of (60.87 ± 8.44) years, 44.5% were women, and 25.1% had CVD. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, an inverse association between high MVPA time and CVD risk that was independent of SED time was found, whereas this association was not observed in the moderate-MVPA group. A higher MVPA time was more likely to have a positive effect on the control of BMI. Compared with the reference group (i.e., those with MVPA time ≥ 450 min·week−1and SED time < 4 h·d–1), CVD risk was higher in the low-MVPA group: The OR associated with an SED time < 4 h·d–1was 1.270 (95% CI, 1.040–1.553) and that associated with an SED time ≥ 8 h·d–1was 1.499 (95% CI, 1.149–1.955). We found that a high MVPA time (i.e., ≥ 450 min·week−1) was associated with lower odds of CVD risk regardless of SED time among patients with T2DM.

40. Hydroxyl-Rich Porous Silica Nanosheets Decorated with Oxygen-Doped Carbon Nitride Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B.

Abstract

Introduction of hydroxyl-rich porous silica nanosheets (SiNSs) induced the high dispersion of oxygen-doped carbon nitride (OCN) nanoparticles via hydroxyl- and mesopore-dual-confined thermal polymerization of precursor melamine and simultaneous hydroxyl-induced O-doping by replacing the edge N atoms of heptazine. The resultant OCN/SiNS composites possessed enhanced photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B (RhB) oxidation compared to bulk CN, with a quick reaction within 55 min and an apparent rate constant of 0.073 min–1, mainly owing to the high adsorption of SiNSs, larger specific surface area of highly dispersed OCN nanoparticles, and the adjusted band structure originated from the comprehensive effects of nanoparticle structure and O-doping, which led to a narrowed band gap with strengthened visible-light adsorption and an enhanced photogenerated carrier separation efficiency. Furthermore, in terms of the photocatalytic mechanism, it showed a more reactive oxygen species of singlet oxygen (main) and superoxide radicals (secondary) for effective RhB decomposition, but significantly lowered the oxidative ability of the holes towards RhB. This work suggests the great potential of silica nanosheets as a supporter and inducer in dispersion and structure tuning of carbon nitride for enhanced photocatalytic property. Abstract

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is a category of secondary hypertension induced by inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system due to increased aldosterone secretion. Aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) is the most common hypotype of PA. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) refers to the symptoms of increased bone resorption and increased calcium reabsorption of kidney tubules caused by parathyroid secretion and excessive synthesis of parathyroid hormone. APA, complicated with PHPT has been extremely rare in clinical practice. In this study, the diagnosis and treatment of one case of APA complicated by PHPT was reported. Relevant literature review was performed.

Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative pathology whose major clinical symptoms are movement disorders. The main pathological characteristics of PD are the selective death of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra and the presence of Lewy bodies containing α-synuclein (α-Syn) within these neurons. PD is associated with numerous risk factors, including environmental factors, genetic mutations and aging. In many cases, the complex interplay of numerous risk factors leads to the onset of PD. The mutated α-Syn gene, which expresses pathologicalα-Syn protein, can cause PD. Another important feature of PD is neuroinflammation, which is conducive to neuronal death. α-Syn is able to interact with certain cell types in the brain, including through phagocytosis and degradation of α-Syn by glial cells, activation of inflammatory pathways by α-Syn in glial cells, transmission of α-Syn between glial cells and neurons, and interactions between peripheral immune cells and α-Syn. In addition to the aforementioned risk factors, PD may also be associated with aging, as the prevalence of PD increases with advancing age. The aging process impairs the cellular clearance mechanism, which leads to chronic inflammation and the accumulation of intracellular α-Syn, which results in DA neuronal death. In the present review, the age-associated α-Syn pathogenicity and the interactions between α-Syn and certain types of cells within the brain are discussed to facilitate understanding of the mechanisms of PD pathogenesis, which may potentially provide insight for the future clinical treatment of PD.
