Abstract

During training phase, more connections (e.g. channel concatenation in last layer of DenseNet) means more occupied GPU memory and lower GPU utilization, requiring more training time. The increase of training time is also not conducive to launch application of SR algorithms. This's why we abandoned DenseNet as basic network. Futhermore, we abandoned this paper due to its limitation only applied on medical images. 7. Medical image super-resolution method based on dense blended attention network

Abstract

In order to address the issue that medical image would suffer from severe blurring caused by the lack of high-frequency details in the process of image super-resolution reconstruction, a novel medical image super-resolution method based on dense neural network and blended attention mechanism is proposed. The proposed method adds blended attention blocks to dense neural network(DenseNet), so that the neural network can concentrate more attention to the regions and channels with sufficient high-frequency details. Batch normalization layers are removed to avoid loss of high-frequency texture details. Final obtained high resolution medical image are obtained using deconvolutional layers at the very end of the network as up-sampling operators. Experimental results show that the proposed method has an improvement of 0.05db to 11.25dB and 0.6% to 14.04% on the peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR) metric and structural similarity index(SSIM) metric, respectively, compared with the mainstream image super-resolution methods. 9. Association of biological aging with prostate cancer: insights from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Abstract

The link between biological aging and prostate cancer (PCa) risk, particularly as indicated by elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, remains uncertain. This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001–2010) to explore this association. Biological age was assessed using Klemera-Doubal method age (KDMAge) and phenotypic age (PhenoAge). PCa was identified through self-reported diagnoses, and highly probable PCa was determined by PSA levels. We analyzed the prevalence of PCa and PSA-defined highly probable PCa across quartiles of biological age measures using weighted chi-square and linear trend tests. Associations were evaluated using weighted multiple logistic regression models. Among 7,209 and 6,682 males analyzed, the overall weighted prevalence of PCa was 2.86%, increasing to 9.60% in those aged 65 and above. A significant rise in PCa prevalence was observed with higher quartiles of KDMAge or PhenoAge (P for trend < 0.001), particularly in those under 65. In this younger group, higher PhenoAge acceleration quartiles were linked to increased PCa prevalence and higher risk of PCa (OR = 1.50, P = 0.015) as well as highly probable PCa in those without a diagnosis (OR = 1.28, P = 0.031). These findings suggest that accelerated biological aging is associated with an increased risk of PCa and may indicate early risk as signaled by PSA levels, even in those without a PCa diagnosis. 15. Rapid and Nondestructive Identification of the Geographical Origin of Ophiopogonis Radix by Raman Spectroscopy and Multivariate Statistical Analysis.

Abstract

The pharmacological activity and clinical efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are significantly influenced by the geographical origin. Therefore, the effective and reliable identification of TCM producing regions is crucial for the quality control and clinical application of TCM. Ophiopogonis Radix (Chinese name: Maidong (MD)) is a well-known TCM with various properties, such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anticancer, and cardiovascular protection. In this study, the feasibility of Raman spectroscopy combined with partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS–DA) to distinguish Sichuan Ophiopogonis Radix (CMD) from Zhejiang Ophiopogonis Radix (ZMD) was investigated. Extensive experimental results demonstrated that the Raman peaks at 363, 465, 1345, 1458, 2893 and 2933 cm−1 corresponding to polysaccharides, homoisoflavonoids, and steroidal saponins could be used as identification chemical markers for CMD and ZMD. Additionally, the PLS–DA-based scheme proposed in this study could identify the geographical origins of CMD from ZMD with an accuracy of 92.7%. Unlike conventional morphological and microscopic identification and physicochemical analysis, the proposed method is nondestructive, involves simple sample preparation, requires a very low mass of the sample, and exhibits a high classification accuracy to discriminate between CMD and ZMD. Therefore, despite analyzing a limited number of samples, this study proposes a method by the combination of Raman spectroscopy and PLS–DA to rapidly, sensitively, and nondestructively discriminate Ophiopogonis Radix samples with different geographical origins. This study confirms that Raman spectroscopy exhibits high potential to facilitate the authentication, quality control, and supervision of herbal medicines and processed products. Abstract

Paclitaxel is an antitumor diterpene from Taxus spp. that binds tubulin, stabilizes microtubules and induces apoptosis in dividing human cells. It was originally isolated from the bark of Taxus brevifolia and approved for clinic uses by the FDA in 1992. Because of its excellent activity in treatment of various cancers, a significant supply shortage has been created by the enormous demand for this natural product. Thus, researchers have been focusing on the development of effective ways to increase the production of paclitaxel and related bioactive molecules. This shortage was initially solved by over-harvesting of T. brevifolia bark; however, it is not an environment-friendly, effective and sustainable way to supply paclitaxel. A semisynthetic route was then developed to convert the more readily available and renewable 10-deacetylbacatin III into paclitaxel. As an alternative, plant cell cultures have been employed to commercially produce paclitaxel and it is a more environment-friendly and sustainable route to end the supply crisis. However, problems associated with plant cell culturing at an industrial scale, such as cell aggregation and variability in yield, significantly affect paclitaxel production. Therefore, a discovery of a better-performing Taxus cell line might be a solution to overcome these culturing-associated problems. A cambial meristematic cell (CMC) line of Taxus cuspidata has been isolated, cultured and demonstrated to be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly platform for the sustainable production of paclitaxel (Lee et al. 2010). Compared to dedifferentiated cell (DDC) lines, CMC lines are undifferentiated cells and proved to have stem cell-like properties. When cultured at an industrial scale, this cell line contains much smaller cell aggregates with many cells appearing as singletons, the biomass of which is still increasing after 22-month culturing, and has much greater paclitaxel production after elicitation (Lee et al. 2010). In my project, we aimed to identify the transcription factors (TFs) that regulate the expression of paclitaxel biosynthesis genes. We performed Illumina Solexa sequencing on cDNA libraries derived from methyl jasmonate (MeJA)-elicitated CMCs to digitally profile gene expression. Analysis of differentially expressed gene (DEG) abundance led to the discovery of 19 putative TFs and bioinformatic analysis further showed that these 19 TFs belong to 5 different TF families. Further, the DNA binding motifs associated with these TFs can be found in the promoters of the two early, taxadiene synthase (TASY) and taxadiene 5α hydroxylase (T5αH), and three late, 10-deacetylbaccatin III-10-O-acetyltransferase (DBAT), phenylpropanoyltransferase (PAM) and 3’-N-debenzoyl-2-deoxytaxol-Nbenzoyltransferase (DBTNBT), paclitaxel biosynthesis pathway genes. Then, yeast one-hybrid analysis, gel shifting assays and plant transient expression assays (TEA) were employed to assay TFs that interact with these promoters. Although Y1H screening did not show any convincing TF-promoter interactions, the attempted plant transient expression assay in the leaves of Nicotiana benthamiana might be a more suitable system to screen the positive regulators. Finally, the elucidation of a TF regulatory network that controls paclitaxel biosynthesis will guide the rational engineering of CMCs to ultimately increase yields of this important pharmaceutical.

Abstract

We investigated effects of ring size choosing strategy for Shang Ring male circumcision. Seventy-four cases were recruited and assigned into the larger or smaller ring group. Compared with the larger ring group, there was shorter operation time (7.5 ± 1.9 vs. 6.7 ± 1.4 minutes, P = 0.035) and less blood loss (1.6 ± 0.7 vs. 1.1 ± 0.8 mL, P = 0.014) in the smaller ring group. The smaller ring group also exhibited shorter healing duration than the larger ring group (22.3 ± 4.1 days vs. 24.4 ± 4.5 days, P = 0.041). When the measured size does not fit into commercially available size, it is better to choose the smaller one.
