Abstract

HEPScore is a new CPU benchmark created to replace the HEPSPEC06 benchmark that is currently used by the WLCG for procurement, computing resource pledges and performance studies. The development of the new benchmark, based on HEP applications or workloads, has involved many contributions from software developers, data analysts, experts of the experiments, representatives of several WLCG computing centres, as well as the WLCG HEPScore Deployment Task Force. 3. Polaritonic coherent perfect absorption based on strong critical coupling between quasi-bound state in the continuum and exciton

Abstract

Enhancement of light-matter interactions is of great importance for many nanophotonic devices, and one way to achieve it is to feed energy perfectly to the strongly coupled system. Here, we propose gap-perturbed dimerized gratings based on bulk WS2 for flexible control of the strong coupling between quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) and exciton. The simulation results show that when a gap perturbation is introduced into the system resulting in the Brillouin zone folding, BIC transforms into quasi-BIC whose quality factor (Q-factor) is related to the value of gap perturbation. The strong coupling results in the anti-crossover behavior of the absorption spectra, and thus a Rabi splitting energy of 0.235 eV is obtained. Temporal coupled-mode theory is employed to analyze the strong coupling system, and the absorption of the system could be enhanced, by modulating the damping rate of quasi-BIC to make the system satisfy the strong critical coupling condition. Furthermore, polaritonic coherent perfect absorption is achieved by using the two-port source excitation. 32. Predicting and Supporting Student Performance in a High Fail and High Incompletion Course: An Exploratory Study of Introduction to General Chemistry

Abstract

This quantitative exploratory study investigated factors related to the fail rate of first-year students in Introduction to General Chemistry courses (CHEM 1xx) at a mid-sized public research university. This course represents a gateway course for many scientific, medical, and healthcare majors. The sample consisted of 595 undergraduate students and used binary logistic regression to analyze the data. We found individual instructors were a significant predictor of students' grade in the Introduction to General Chemistry course. The students' American College Testing (ACT) math scores, SAT, or originally the Scholastic Aptitude Test, math scores, and high school grade point average (GPA) were also significant predictors. Interestingly, receipt of a Pell Grant was not a significant predictor of academic performance. Implications include course design, academic advising, tutoring and peer support, institutional research office reporting, as well as considerations for faculty course loads and emphasizing student success in the tenure and promotion process.

33. Porting LHAASO WFCTA simulation job to ARM computing cluster

Abstract

With the advancement of many large-scale high-energy physics experiments, the amount of data to be processed and analyzed has significantly increased. For example, since the start of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) experiment in 2020, their simulation jobs have been running on an Intel X86 cluster, producing only a fraction of the planned data for the first phase due to limited CPU resources. Therefore, it is necessary to explore and expand other computing service devices. We built an application ecosystem based on the ARM architecture to support offline data processing for high-energy physics. The main work includes porting the offline software based on LHAASO experiments to run on ARM machines, formulating data transfer and job scheduling strategies in the ARM cluster, and evaluating performance and power consumption in both Intel X86 and ARM clusters. The results show that the LHAASO simulation jobs can run correctly on the ARM computing cluster. The singlecore performance of Intel X86 CPUs is better than ARM CPUs, but for the entire server with a multicore architecture, ARM servers perform better.

43. Facilitating Charge Separation of Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Microporous Polymers via Position Isomerism Strategy for Efficient CO 2 Photoconversion.

Abstract

Photoreduction of CO2 into the chemical feedstocks of fuels provides a green way to help solve both the energy crisis and carbon emission issues. Nevertheless, undesirable charge separation and migration, as well as rapid reverse charge recombination results in the unsatisfactory photocatalytic activity of most conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs). Herein, a pair of donor–acceptor (D-A) CMPs for CO2 photoconversion was developed through position isomerism by altering linkage sites. The results show that Py-D27F with 2,7-site linkage exhibits a completely conjugated structure and a large molecular dipole moment, thus significantly accelerating charge separation and transfer. As a result, Py-D27F achieves a higher yield of 320.9 μmol g−1 h−1 for CO2-to-CO photoreduction (without the addition of any photosensitizers and precious metals), which is about three-fold greater than that of Py-D36F (3,6-site linkage).
