2. Label-Free Multi-Domain Machine Translation with Stage-wise Training

Abstract

Most multi-domain machine translation models rely on domain-annotated data. Unfortunately, domain labels are usually unavailable in both training processes and real translation scenarios. In this work, we propose a label-free multi-domain machine translation model which requires only a few or no domain-annotated data in training and no domain labels in inference. Our model is composed of three parts: a backbone model, a domain discriminator taking responsibility to discriminate data from different domains, and a set of experts that transfer the decoded features from generic to specific. We design a stage-wise training strategy and train the three parts sequentially. To leverage the extra domain knowledge and improve the training stability, in the discriminator training stage, domain differences are modeled explicitly with clustering and distilled into the discriminator through a multi-classification task. Meanwhile, the Gumbel-Max sampling is adopted as the routing scheme in the expert training stage to achieve the balance of each expert in specialization and generalization. Experimental results on the German-to-English translation task show that our model significantly improves BLEU scores on six different domains and even outperforms most of the models trained with domain-annotated data.

9. A Hybrid Control Scheme for Adaptive Live Streaming

Abstract

The live streaming is more challenging than on-demand streaming, because the low latency is also a strong requirement in addition to the trade-off between video quality and jitters in playback. To balance several inherently conflicting performance metrics and improve the overall quality of experience (QoE), many adaptation schemes have been proposed. Bitrate adaptation is one of the major solutions for video streaming under time-varying network conditions, which works even better combining with some latency control methods, such as adaptive playback rate control and frame dropping. However, it still remains a challenging problem to design an algorithm to combine these adaptation schemes together. To tackle this problem, we propose a hybrid control scheme for adaptive live streaming, namely HYSA, based on heuristic playback rate control, latency-constrained bitrate control and QoE-oriented adaptive frame dropping. The proposed scheme utilizes Kaufman's Adaptive Moving Average (KAMA) to predict segment bitrates for better rate decisions. Abstract

The Importance Weighted Auto Encoder (IWAE) objective has been shown to improve the training of generative models over the standard Variational Auto Encoder (VAE) objective. Here, we derive importance weighted extensions to AVB and AAE. These latent variable models use implicitly defined inference networks whose approximate posterior density q_\phi(z|x) cannot be directly evaluated, an essential ingredient for importance weighting. We show improved training and inference in latent variable models with our adversarially trained importance weighting method, and derive new theoretical connections between adversarial generative model training criteria and marginal likelihood based methods. We apply these methods to the important problem of inferring spiking neural activity from calcium imaging data, a challenging posterior inference problem in neuroscience, and show that posterior samples from the adversarial methods outperform factorized posteriors used in VAEs.

Abstract

Calcium imaging permits optical measurement of neural activity. Since intracellular calcium concentration is an indirect measurement of neural activity, computational tools are necessary to infer the true underlying spiking activity from fluorescence measurements. Bayesian model inversion can be used to solve this problem, but typically requires either computationally expensive MCMC sampling, or faster but approximate maximum-a-posteriori optimization. Here, we introduce a flexible algorithmic framework for fast, efficient and accurate extraction of neural spikes from imaging data. Using the framework of variational autoencoders, we propose to amortize inference by training a deep neural network to perform model inversion efficiently. The recognition network is trained to produce samples from the posterior distribution over spike trains. Once trained, performing inference amounts to a fast single forward pass through the network, without the need for iterative optimization or sampling. We show that amortization can be applied flexibly to a wide range of nonlinear generative models and significantly improves upon the state of the art in computation time, while achieving competitive accuracy. Our framework is also able to represent posterior distributions over spike-trains. Airtime fairness has emerged as a key approach to enhancing wireless throughput performance. However, existing research often overlooks the precise calculation of airtime, particularly in relation to TCP acknowledgments. This paper introduces a novel method, implemented on the access point side, for accurately calculating the airtime of TCP and UDP flows. Building on this, we propose a QoS-based scheduling algorithm designed to improve fairness between upload and download traffic. Abstract

The aim of this study is to accurately evaluate the quality characteristics of whole tillage cropland and deepen the knowledge of sub-tillage soil quality evaluation in Jilin Province, China. In this study, top-tillage and sub-tillage soil samples were collected from 185 maize continuous cropping areas in Jilin Province, and 12 physicochemical indexes (pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), sand, silt, and clay) were used to evaluate the whole tillage layer soil quality index (SQI). The results showed that the whole tillage soil physicochemical indexes in Jilin Province were generally above the moderate level, and nutrient contents increased from West to East among the regions. The minimum data set SQI (SQI-MDS) of the top-tillage and sub-tillage layers were 0.22–0.98 (0.46) and 0.23–0.93 (0.55), respectively. The suitable ranges of MDS parameters for reasonable tillage layers were as follows: top-tillage layer SOM ≥ 34.5 g kg−1, 31.5% ≤ sand ≤ 53.5%, AP ≥ 32.1 mg kg−1, and TK ≥ 15.18 g kg−1; sub-tillage layer 31.3% ≤ sand ≤ 51.2%, TN ≥ 1.48 g kg−1, 6.4 ≤ pH ≤ 7.1, and AK ≥ 157.6 mg kg−1. In summary, the SQI and evaluation indexes of the top-tillage and sub-tillage layers in different ecological zones are varied. It is necessary to adjust the evaluation index thresholds in combination with the actual conditions to establish a more accurate evaluation index system of the whole tillage soil quality. Recent advancements in material science have led to the development of emerging photodetecting materials, such as perovskites, polymers, novel two-dimensional materials, and quantum dots, which offer unique optoelectronic properties and high tunability. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the synthesis methodologies for these cutting-edge materials, highlighting their potential to enhance photodetection performance. Additionally, we explore the design and fabrication of photodetectors with novel structures and physics, emphasizing devices that achieve high figure-of-merit parameters, such as enhanced sensitivity, fast response times, and broad spectral detection. 46. The unfairness of UDP traffic in routers with different buffer units

Abstract

In recent years, router buffer sizing becomes one of hot research topics. There were a variety of different views of buffer sizing presented in the literature. However, all the previous studies ignored whether buffer unit was structured in terms of packet or byte. In this paper, we find that the loss performance of routers with very small buffers is impacted by the buffer unit structure. When buffer unit is structured in terms of byte, the UDP packet loss rate is lower than the TCP packet loss rate. However, when buffer unit is structured in terms of packet, the UDP packet loss rate is higher than the TCP packet loss rate. We draw the conclusion that the different buffer units would create an unfair impact on UDP traffic. We further analyze this unexpected unfairness for UDP traffic, and present two models to explain the unfairness created by different buffer units in routers. The simulation results reveal that a smaller proportion of UDP traffic ensures low packet loss rate for TCP traffic when buffer unit is byte. When buffer unit is packet, a smaller proportion of UDP traffic ensures low packet loss rate for both TCP traffic and UDP traffic.
