We study two-state (dichotomous, telegraph) random ergodic continuous-time processes with dynamics depending on their past. We take into account the history of process in an explicit form by introducing an integral non-local memory term into the conditional probability function. We start from an expression for the conditional transition probability function describing additive multi-step binary random chain and show that the telegraph processes can be considered as continuous-time interpolations of discrete-time dichotomous random sequences. An equation involving the memory function and the two-point correlation function of the telegraph process is analytically obtained. This integral equation defines the correlation properties of the processes with given memory functions. It also serves as a tool for solving the inverse problem, namely for generation of a telegraph process with a prescribed pair correlation function. We obtain analytically the correlation functions of the telegraph processes with two exactly solvable examples of memory functions and support these results by numerical simulations of the corresponding telegraph processes.

We propose two different approaches for introducing the information temperature of the binary N-th order Markov chains. The first approach is based on comparing the Markov sequences with the equilibrium Ising chains at given temperatures. The second approach uses probabilities of finite-length subsequences of symbols occurring, which determine their entropies. The derivative of the entropy with respect to the energy gives the information temperature measured on the scale of introduced energy. For the case of nearest-neighbor spin/symbol interaction, both approaches provide similar results. However, the method based on the correspondence of the N-step Markov and Ising chains appears to be very cumbersome for N>3. We also introduce the information temperature for the weakly correlated one-parametric Markov chains and present results for the step-wise and power memory functions. An application of the developed method to obtain the information temperature of some literary texts is given.

We theoretically study the propagation of a Terahertz (THz) Gaussian beam through a thin sample of layered superconductor. We consider the beam axis and the superconducting layers to be perpendicular to the sample interface, while the electric field in the beam is perpendicular to the layers. We show that, in such a geometry, the Josephson current between the superconducting layers supports lensing of the beam instead of divergence on the Rayleigh range. Moreover, due to the nonlinearity, the focal length and waist of the transmitted beam depend on the incident beam intensity. These dependences demonstrate nontrivial hysteresis behavior that can be observed in experiments with THz lasers.

We study the random processes with non-local memory and obtain new solutions of the Mori-Zwanzig equation describing non-markovian systems. We analyze the system dynamics depending on the amplitudes $\nu$ and $\mu_0$ of the local and non-local memory and pay attention to the line in the ($\nu$, $\mu_0$)-plane separating the regions with asymptotically stationary and non-stationary behavior. We obtain general equations for such boundaries and consider them for three examples of the non-local memory functions. We show that there exist two types of the boundaries with fundamentally different system dynamics. On the boundaries of the first type, the diffusion with memory takes place, whereas on borderlines of the second type, the phenomenon of noise-induced resonance can be observed. A distinctive feature of noise-induced resonance in the systems under consideration is that it occurs in the absence of an external regular periodic force. It takes place due to the presence of frequencies in the noise spectrum, which are close to the self-frequency of the system. We analyze also the variance of the process and compare its behavior for regions of asymptotic stationarity and non-stationarity, as well as for diffusive and noise-induced-resonance borderlines between them., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We study the non-Markovian random continuous processes described by the Mori-Zwanzig equation. As a starting point, we use the Markovian Gaussian Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and introduce an integral memory term depending on the past of the process into expression for the higher-order transition probability function and stochastic differential equation. We show that the proposed processes can be considered as continuous-time interpolations of discrete-time higher-order autoregressive sequences. An equation connecting the memory function (the kernel of integral term) and the two-point correlation function is obtained. A condition for stationarity of the process is established. We suggest a method to generate stationary continuous stochastic processes with prescribed pair correlation function. We show that a specific superposition principle is valid for \emph{nonlinear} Josephson plasma waves in layered superconductors. We study theoretically the reflection and transmission of terahertz waves through a finite-size superconducting slab placed inside a rectangular waveguide with ideal-metal walls. We assume that the superconducting layers are parallel to the waveguide axis. We show that there exist two specific mutually-orthogonal polarizations for waves which, in spite of the nonlinearity, reflect and transmit through the superconductor \emph{independently}. The wave of the first polarization causes a strong shielding current along the crystallographic \textbf{ab}-plane of the superconductor. Therefore, this wave reflects nearly completely from the superconductor and excites only an evanescent mode inside it. The wave of the other polarization does not contain the electric field component parallel to both the sample surface and the crystallographic \textbf{ab}-plane, and excites much weaker shielding currents. Therefore, it partially reflects and partially transmits through the sample. Moreover, this wave excites the nonlinear mode in the layered superconductor, and the transmission coefficient of the superconductor depends on the amplitude of the incident wave of this polarization.On the basis of the discussed superposition principle, we suggest a new method for solving nonlinear problems of waves interaction in layered superconductors. Namely, it is reasonably to represent incident, reflected, and transmitted waves of any polarizations as superpositions of the modes with the two specific polarizations considered here, and then solve the problem separately for these modes. We apply this method to the case of nonlinear interaction and mutual transformation of the transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes in layered superconductors., Comment: 6 figures. We predict the coexistence of both TE- and TM-polarized localized electromagnetic waves that can propagate \emph{in the same frequency range} along a graphene layer inserted in a photonic crystal. In addition, we studied the excitation of these modes by an external wave and have shown that the resonance peaks of the sample transmissivity should be observed due to the excitation of the localized waves, independently of the polarization of the exciting wave. The simplicity of the derived dispersion relations for the localized modes and the possibility to excite waves of both polarizations provide a method for measuring graphene conductivity., Comment: This manuscript was extended to 7 pages and 8 figures and published in PRB

We theoretically study the transition radiation of bulk and surface electromagnetic waves by an electron crossing an interface between a layered superconductor and an isotropic dielectric. We assume that the direction of the electron motion and the orientation of the superconducting layers are perpendicular to the interface. We derive the analytical expressions for the strongly anisotropic radiation fields and for the time-integrated energy fluxes of bulk and oblique surface electromagnetic waves (OSWs). We show that the OSWs with frequencies close to the Josephson plasma frequency $\omega_J$ provide the main contribution to the OSWs energy flux. Moreover, for frequencies close to the Josephson plasma frequency, the spectral density of the OSWs radiation diverges at some critical value of the azimuth angle $\varphi$. At the angles $\varphi=0$ and $\varphi=90^o$, the radiation field has a transverse magnetic polarization. We have also studied the Cherenkov radiation by the electron escaping from the layered superconductor and show that this radiation is almost monochromatic. We predict and study theoretically a new nonlinear electromagnetic phenomenon in a sample of layered superconductor of finite length placed in a waveguide with ideal walls. Two geometries are considered here: when the superconducting layers are parallel or perpendicular to the waveguide axis. We show that the transmittance of the superconductor slab can vary over a wide range, from nearly zero to one, when changing the amplitude of the incident wave. Thus, one can induce the total transmission or reflection of the incident wave by just changing its amplitude. Moreover, the dependence of the superconductor transmittance on the incident wave amplitude has a hysteretic behavior with jumps. The considered phenomenon of self-induced transparency can be observed even at small amplitudes, if the wave frequency $\omega$ is close to the cutoff frequency for linear Josephson plasma waves., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, submitted to PRB

We have theoretically studied oblique surface waves (OSWs) which propagate along the interface between a dielectric and a layered superconductor. We assume that this interface is perpendicular to the superconducting layers, and OSWs at the interface can propagate at an arbitrary angle with respect to them. The electromagnetic field of the OSWs in a layered superconductor is a superposition of an ordinary wave (with its electric field parallel to the layers) and an extraordinary wave (with its magnetic field parallel to the layers). We have derived the dispersion equation for the OSWs and shown that the dispersion curves have end-points where the extraordinary mode transforms from evanescent wave to bulk wave, propagating deep into the superconductor. In addition, we have analytically solved the problem of the resonance excitation of the OSWs by the attenuated-total-reflection method using an additional dielectric prism. Due to the strong current anisotropy in the boundary of the superconductor, the excitation of the OSWs is accompanied by an additional important phenomenon: the electromagnetic field component with the orthogonal polarization appears in the wave reflected from the bottom of the prism. We show that, for definite optimal combinations of the problem parameters (the wave frequency, the direction of the incident wave vector, the thickness of the gap between dielectric prism and superconductor, etc.), there is a complete suppression of the reflected wave with its polarization coinciding with the polarization of the incident wave. Contrary to the isotropic case, this phenomenon can be observed even in the dissipationless limit. We predict the enhanced transmissivity of modulated slabs of layered superconductors for terahertz radiation due to the diffraction of the incident wave and the resonance excitation of the eigenmodes. The electromagnetic field is transferred from the irradiated side of a slab of layered superconductor to the other one by excited waveguide modes (WGMs) which do not decay deep into the slab, contrary to metals, where the enhanced light transmission is caused by the excitation of the evanescent surface waves. We show that a series of resonance peaks (with $T \sim 1$) can be observed in the dependence of the transmittance $T$ on the varying incidence angle $\theta$, when the dispersion curve of the diffracted wave crosses successive dispersion curves for the WGMs., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; submitted to PRL

We predict a complete TM-TE transformation of the polarization of terahertz electromagnetic waves reflected from a strongly anisotropic boundary of a layered superconductor. We consider the case when the wave is incident on the superconductor from a dielectric prism separated from the sample by a thin vacuum gap. The physical origin of the predicted phenomenon is similar to the Wood anomalies known in optics, and is related to the resonance excitation of the oblique surface waves. We also discuss the dispersion relation for these waves, propagating along the boundary of the superconductor at some angle with respect to the anisotropy axis, as well as their excitation by the attenuated-total-reflection method., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We predict a novel nonlinear electromagnetic phenomenon in layered superconducting slabs irradiated from one side by an electromagnetic plane wave. We show that the reflectance and transmittance of the slab can vary over a wide range, from nearly zero to one, when changing the incident wave amplitude. Thus changing the amplitude of the incident wave can induce either the total transmission or reflection of the incident wave. In addition, the dependence of the superconductor transmittance on the incident wave amplitude has an unusual hysteretic behavior with jumps. We predict a new branch of surface Josephson plasma waves (SJPWs) in layered superconductors for frequencies higher than the Josephson plasma frequency. In this frequency range, the permittivity tensor components along and transverse to the layers have different signs, which is usually associated with negative refraction. However, for these frequencies, the bulk Josephson plasma waves cannot be matched with the incident and reflected waves in the vacuum, and, instead of the negative-refractive properties, abnormal surface modes appear within the frequency band expected for bulk modes. Parts of DNA sequences known as exons and introns play very different role in coding and storage of genetic information. Here we show that their conducting properties are also very different. Taking into account long-range correlations among four basic nucleotides that form double-stranded DNA sequence, we calculate electron localization length for exon and intron regions. Analyzing different DNA molecules, we obtain that the exons have narrow bands of extended states, unlike the introns where all the states are well localized. The band of extended states is due to a specific form of the binary correlation function of the sequence of basic DNA nucleotides., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We discuss the limitations of the applicability of the Lifshitz formula to describe the temperature dependence of the Casimir force between two bulk lossy metals. These limitations follow from the finite sizes of the interacting bodies. Namely, Lifshitz's theory is not applicable when the characteristic wavelengths of the fluctuating fields, responsible for the temperature-dependent terms in the Casimir force, is longer than the sizes of the samples. As a result of this, the widely discussed linearly decreasing temperature dependence of the Casimir force can be observed only for dirty and/or large metal samples at high enough temperatures. This solves the problem of the inconsistency between the Nernst theorem and the "linearly decreasing temperature dependence" of the Casimir free energy, because this linear dependence is not valid when $T \to 0$, Comment: 8 pages

The recent growing interest in terahertz (THz) and sub-THz science and technology is due to its many important applications in physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, and medicine. We review the problem of linear and non-linear THz and sub-THz Josephson plasma waves in layered superconductors and their excitations produced by moving Josephson vortices. We start by discussing the coupled sine-Gordon equations for the gauge-invariant phase difference of the order parameter in the junctions, taking into account the effect of breaking the charge neutrality, and deriving the spectrum of Josephson plasma waves. We also review surface and waveguide Josephson plasma waves. We review the propagation of weakly nonlinear Josephson plasma waves below the plasma frequency, which is very unusual for plasma-like excitations. In close analogy to nonlinear optics, these waves exhibit numerous remarkable features, including a self-focusing effect, and the pumping of weaker waves by a stronger one. We also present quantum effects in layered superconductors, specifically, the problem of quantum tunnelling of fluxons through stacks of Josephson junctions. We discuss the Cherenkov and transition radiations of the Josephson plasma waves produced by moving Josephson vortices. We also discuss the problem of coherent radiation (superradiance) of the THz waves by exciting uniform Josephson oscillations. The effects reviewed here could be potentially useful for sub-THz and THz emitters, filters, and detectors.

Locally-gated single-layer graphene sheets have unusual discrete energy states inside the potential barrier induced by a finite-width gate. These states are localized outside the Dirac cone of continuum states and are responsible for novel quantum transport phenomena. Specifically, the longitudinal (along the barrier) conductance exhibits oscillations as a function of barrier height and/or width, which are both controlled by a nearby gate. The origin of these oscillations can be traced back to singularities in the density of localized states. These graphene conductance-oscillations resemble the Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) magneto-oscillations; however, here these are driven by an electric field instead of a magnetic field., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We study the statistical properties of Ising spin chains with finite (although arbitrary large) range of interaction between the elements. We examine mesoscopic subsystems (fragments of an Ising chain) with the lengths comparable with the interaction range. The equivalence of the Ising chains and the multi-step Markov sequences is used for calculating different non-additive statistical quantities of a chain and its fragments. In particular, we study the variance of fluctuating magnetization of fragments, magnetization of the chain in the external magnetic field, etc. Asymptotical expressions for the non-additive energy and entropy of the mesoscopic fragments are derived in the limiting cases of weak and strong interactions., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

We predict a new class of excitations propagating along a Josephson vortex in two-dimensional Josephson junctions. These excitations are associated with the distortion of a Josephson vortex line and have an analogy with shear waves in solid mechanics. Their shapes can have an arbitrary profile, which is retained when propagating. We derive a universal analytical expression for the energy of arbitrary shape excitations, investigate their influence on the dynamics of a vortex line, and discuss conditions where such excitations can be created. Finally, we show that such excitations play the role of a clock for a relativistically-moving Josephson vortex and suggest an experiment to measure a time dilation effect analogous to that in special relativity., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

We predict surface electromagnetic waves propagating across the layers of intrinsic Josephson junctions. We find the spectrum of the surface waves and study the distribution of the electromagnetic field inside and outside the superconductor. The profile of the amplitude oscillations of the electric field component of such waves is peculiar: initially, it increases toward the center of the superconductor and, after reaching a crossover point, decreases exponentially., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We analytically examine the excitation of surface Josephson plasma waves (SJPWs) in periodically-modulated layered superconductors. We show that the absorption of the incident electromagnetic wave can be substantially increased, for certain incident angles, due to the resonance excitation of SJPWs. The absorption increase is accompanied by the decrease of the specular reflection. Moreover, we find the physical conditions guaranteeing the total absorption (and total suppression of the specular reflection). We consider here a layered superconductor subject to an externally applied moderately-strong electromagnetic field. We predict hysteretic jumps in the dependence of the surface reactance of the superconductor on the amplitude of the incident electromagnetic wave. This very unusual nonlinear phenomenon can be observed in thin superconducting slabs at not very strong ac amplitudes, if the frequency of the irradiating field is close to the Josephson plasma frequency. Using the set of coupled sine-Gordon equations, we derive the expression for the phase shift of the reflected wave and obtain the conditions for the appearance of hysteresis., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

The dependence of the Casimir force on material properties is important for both future applications and to gain further insight on its fundamental aspects. Here we derive a general theory of the Casimir force for low-conducting compounds, or poor metals. For distances in the micrometer range, a large variety of such materials is described by universal equations containing a few parameters: the effective plasma frequency, dissipation rate of the free carriers, and electric permittivity in the infrared range. This theory can also describe inhomogeneous composite materials containing small regions with different conductivity. The Casimir force for mechanical systems involving samples made with compounds that have a metal-insulator transition shows an abrupt large temperature dependence of the Casimir force within the transition region, where metallic and dielectric phases coexist., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

Within the framework of the Drude dispersive model, we predict an unusual non-monotonous temperature dependence of the Casimir force for thin metal films. For certain conditions, this force decreases with temperature due to the decrease of the metallic conductivity, whereas the force increases at high temperatures due to the increase of the thermal radiation pressure. We consider the attraction of a film to: either (i) a bulk ideal metal with a planar boundary, or (ii) a bulk metal sphere (lens). The experimental observation of the predicted non-monotonous temperature dependence of the Casimir force can put an end to the long-standing discussion on the role of the electron relaxation in the Casimir effect., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We predict unusual (for non-relativistic quantum mechanics) electron states in graphene, which are localized within a finite-width potential barrier. The density of localized states in the sufficiently high and/or wide graphene barrier exhibits a number of singularities at certain values of the energy. Such singularities provide quantum oscillations of both the transport (e.g., conductivity) and thermodynamic properties of graphene - when increasing the barrier height and/or width, similarly to the well-known Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) oscillations of conductivity in pure metals. A new approach to non-extensive thermodynamical systems with non-additive energy and entropy is proposed. The main idea of the paper is based on the statistical matching of the thermodynamical systems with the additive multi-step Markov chains. This general approach is applied to the Ising spin chain with long-range interaction between its elements. The asymptotical expressions for the energy and entropy of the system are derived for the limiting case of weak interaction. We study properties of the additive binary Markov chain with short and long-range correlations. A new approach is suggested that allows one to express global statistical properties of a binary chain in terms of the so-called memory function. The latter is directly connected with the pair correlator of a chain via the integral equation that is analyzed in great detail. Two approaches to studying the correlation functions of the binary Markov sequences are considered. The first of them is based on the study of probability of occurring different ''words'' in the sequence. The other one uses recurrence relations for correlation functions. These methods are applied for two important particular classes of the Markov chains. These classes include the Markov chains with permutative conditional probability functions and the additive Markov chains with the small memory functions. The exciting property of the self-similarity (discovered in Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 110601 (2003) for the additive Markov chain with the step-wise memory function) is proved to be the intrinsic property of any permutative Markov chain. Applicability of the correlation functions of the additive Markov chains with the small memory functions to calculating the thermodynamic characteristics of the classical Ising spin chain with long-range interaction is discussed., Comment: 9 pages

A new object of the probability theory, the two-sided chain of symbols (introduced in Ref. arXiv:physics/0306170) is used to study isotropy properties of binary multi-step Markov chains with the long-range correlations. Established statistical correspondence between the Markov chains and certain two-sided sequences allows us to prove the isotropy properties of three classes of the Markov chains. A theory of symbolic dynamic systems with long-range correlations based on the consideration of the binary N-step Markov chains developed earlier in Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 110601 (2003) is generalized to the biased case (non equal numbers of zeros and unities in the chain). In the model, the conditional probability that the i-th symbol in the chain equals zero (or unity) is a linear function of the number of unities (zeros) among the preceding N symbols. The correlation and distribution functions as well as the variance of number of symbols in the words of arbitrary length L are obtained analytically and verified by numerical simulations. A self-similarity of the studied stochastic process is revealed and the similarity group transformation of the chain parameters is presented. The diffusion Fokker-Planck equation governing the distribution function of the L-words is explored. If the persistent correlations are not extremely strong, the distribution function is shown to be the Gaussian with the variance being nonlinearly dependent on L. An equation connecting the memory and correlation function of the additive Markov chain is presented. This equation allows reconstructing a memory function using a correlation function of the system. Effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method is demonstrated by simple model examples. The stationary one-dimensional tight-binding Schredinger equation with a weak diagonal long-range correlated disorder in the potential is studied. The effect of the transverse AC magnetic field on relaxation process in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ melt-textured superconductor was studied. A factor of 50 suppression of the relaxation rate could be achieved at the expense of some reduction in the maximum trapped field, with the magnetic-induction gradient being unchanged. The binary many-step Markov chain with the step-like memory function is considered as a model for the analysis of rank distributions of words in stochastic symbolic dynamical systems. We prove that the envelope curve for this distribution obeys the power law with the exponent of the order of unity in the case of rather strong persistent correlations. We present the transport studies of field variation of the pinning force for the flux motion across the twin boundaries in YBaCuO single crystals. It is found that the depinning current J_c decreases with an increase in the magnetic field due to reduction of the portion of vortex lines trapped by the TB's. However, at transport currents J << J_c, the vortex velocity weakly decreases with the increased field, i.e. it is determined mainly by the release of the vortex lines from the TB's., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

A theory of additive Markov chains with long-range memory is used for description of correlation properties of coarse-grained literary texts. The complex structure of the correlations in texts is revealed. Antipersistent correlations at small distances, L < 300, and persistent ones at L > 300 define this nontrivial structure. For some concrete examples of literary texts, the memory functions are obtained and their power-law behavior at long distances is disclosed. The effect of the transverse AC magnetic field on relaxation process in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ melt-textured superconductor was studied. A factor of 50 suppression of the relaxation rate could be achieved at the expense of some reduction in the maximum trapped field, with the magnetic-induction gradient being unchanged. A theory of systems with long-range correlations based on the consideration of binary N-step Markov chains is developed. In the model, the conditional probability that the i-th symbol in the chain equals zero (or unity) is a linear function of the number of unities among the preceding N symbols. The correlation and distribution functions as well as the variance of number of symbols in the words of arbitrary length L are obtained analytically and numerically. A self-similarity of the studied stochastic process is revealed and the similarity group transformation of the chain parameters is presented. The diffusion Fokker-Planck equation governing the distribution function of the L-words is explored. If the persistent correlations are not extremely strong, the distribution function is shown to be the Gaussian with the variance being nonlinearly dependent on L. A theory of the macroturbulent instability in the system containing vortices of opposite directions (vortices and antivortices) in hard superconductors is proposed. The origin of the instability is connected with the anisotropy of the current capability in the sample plane. The anisotropy results in the appearance of tangential discontinuity of the hydrodynamic velocity of vortex and antivortex motion near the front of magnetization reversal. As is known from the classical hydrodynamics of viscous fluids, this leads to the turbulization of flow. The examination is performed on the basis of the anisotropic power-law current-voltage characteristics. The dispersion equation for the dependence of the instability increment on the wave number of perturbation is obtained, solved, and analyzed analytically and numerically. The physical nature of the macroturbulence in the vortex matter in YBCO superconductors is verified by means of magnetooptic study of the instability in a single crystal prepared specially for this purpose. The instability develops near those sample edges where the oppositely directed flow of vortices and antivortices, guided by twin boundaries, is characterized by the discontinuity of the tangential component of the hydrodynamic velocity. We have monitored new peculiarities of the dynamics of catastrophic avalanches of the magnetic flux in superconducting Nb, Nb-Ti, and YBaCuO samples: i) convergent oscillations of the magnetic flux; ii) a threshold for entering the huge flux avalanches in the shielding experiments; iii) a threshold for the exit of a residual flux in the trapping experiments. The macroturbulence instability observed in fluxline systems during remagnetization of superconductors is explained. It is shown that when a region with flux is invaded by antiflux the interface can become unstable if there is a relative tangential flux motion. This condition occurs at the interface when the viscosity is anisotropic, e.g., due to flux guiding by twin boundaries in crystals. The phenomenon is similar to the instability of the tangential discontinuity in classical hydrodynamics.
