4. Long-term statistics of laser beam propagation in an optical ground-to-geostationary satellite communications link

Abstract

A ground-to-space laser communications experiment was conducted to verify the optical interfaces between a laser communications terminal in an optical ground station and at optical payload onboard a geostationary satellite 38 0011 km away The end-to-end optical characteristics such as intensity, sensitivity wavelength, polarization, and the modulation scheme of optical signals as well as acquisition sequences of the terminals were tested under fairly good atmospheric conditions. The downlink's, bit error rate was on the order of [10.sup.-10] in spite of atmospheric turbulence. Atmospheric turbulence-induced signal fading increased the uplink bit error rate, the best value of which was 2.5 x [10.sup.-5] because the turbulent layer near the earth surface affects the uplink signal more than it does the downlink one. The far-field optical antenna patterns were measured through the ground-to-satellite laser links. The long-term statistics of the optical signal data is in good agreement with the calculated joint probability density function due to atmospheric turbulence and pointing jitter error effects, which means the stationary stochastic process can be applied to not only the static link analysis but also the dynamic link performance of the optical communications link. The equivalent broadened optical beam pattern should be used for the fading analysis even though the atmospheric coherence length is larger than the antenna diameter or the optical beam diameter of the transmitter. From these results, a more accurate dynamic link design of the optical communications link can be performed that would be useful for system designers, especially for designers of commercial systems. 7. Robotic servicing system for space material experiment

Abstract

A containerless image furnace with an electrostatic positioning device has been developed as one of the material experiment facilities on the Japanese experimental module (JEM). It is characterized by heating/melting/cooling the sample whose position is kept without any contacts by actively controlled electrostatic force exerted between the sample and a set of electrodes. The experiment using the image furnace requires various servicing operations. We have been developing a robotic servicing system with an internal robot accommodated in the rack as an alternative to the crew. It aims to reduce the load on the crew by automating regular tasks and to increase the flexibility applicable to simple irregular tasks by introducing a remote teleoperation scheme. The present robot has poor capability to replace the crew. In order to compensate it, introducing of the concept of the robot friendliness and improving the controllability of the teleoperation by the ground operator aids are essential. In this paper, we identify the tasks to be performed by the robotic servicing system and discuss the way to compensate the capability of the robot. In addition we describe the evaluation tests using an experimental model.

8. A new containerless image furnace with electro-static positioning device

Abstract

A new containerless image furnace with a microwave discharge plasma lamp and electrostatic positioning device was developed for the use of the microgravity experiment on the Japanese experimental module (JEM). The electrostatic positioning system was tested under the reduced gravity environment in the MU-300 aircraft. Solid specimens (maximum weight is 1.3 gr and 10 mm in diameter) and water drops (maximum weight is 0.11 gr and 6 mm in diameter) were successfully controlled under the 0.02G environment. Rotation control of the dielectric specimen was also possible by means of supplying a rotating electric field while the specimen is levitating. The measured rotation speed of the glass shell specimen (0.08 gr, 10 mm) was up to 110 rpm, when the rotating field frequency was 6Hz.

Abstract

The microvibration generated by some instruments on orbit is considered as a key factor of pointing stability deterioration. Therefore it is important that the influence of the microvibration is estimated before the launch. In this paper the results of the ground tests by using of OICETS (Optical Inter-orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite: KIRARI) MTM (Mechanical Test Model) and the on orbit measured result by the accelerometer (MVE: Micro Vibration Equipment) installed in OICETS are described. By using these results and an assumption, the transfer characteristics from main disturbance sources to MVE installed in OICETS are calculated. We compare these structural transfer characteristics and confirm the reproducibility of the ground test on orbit and the effectiveness of the ground test., 近年、指向安定度劣化の主要因として検討が盛んな機械的振動擾乱について、OICETS (Optical Inter-orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite:きらり)に搭載したMVE (Micro Vibration Equipment)の軌道上加速度データ出力をもとに、軌道上で実際に発生した振動擾乱についての評価を行う。軌道上データから構造伝達特性を評価し、この結果と地上試験データから得られる構造伝達特性との比較を行うことで、地上試験の結果が軌道上でどの程度再現しているかを確認し、地上試験の有効性について、考察を行う。

Abstract

The handling of fluids was tested during parabolic flights, to obtain basic designing data for the development of the Cell Culture Facility for the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM). Fluids simulating culture media were injected into or drawn from cell culture chambers which were partitioned into two rooms by one porous filter. The results showed that the air/liquid interface could remain undisturbed under the microgravity condition, when one room has one injection/collection port and another has two injection/collection port. This suggests that the air inside the chamber can be replaced by the fluid or vice versa, permitting medium exchange and other handling procedures become easier and simpler., 日本宇宙ステーション実験モジュール(JEM)に搭載する細胞培養装置開発の設計基礎データを得るため、液体の取り扱い法をパラボリックフライト中でテストした。培地にシミュレートした液体を一つの多孔性膜で2室に分割した細胞培養チャンバの中へ注入、または中から抽出する。結果として、1室が1個の注入/抽出孔を持ち、もう1室が2個の注入/抽出孔を持つとき、微小重力条件のもとで、気液界面を安定に維持し得た。このことから、チャンバ内の空気を液体と置き換えること、またはその逆が可能であり、培養液の交換その他の手順を容易かつ簡便に行うことができる。

Abstract

This report describes a testbed developed to study micro-vibration testing methods of spacecraft. A structure of the testbed was design so that its load path simulated a typical bus structure. Several disturbance sources can be lccated on the testbed, and boundary conditon to support the testbed can be chosen to simulate behavior in orbit. Then, several testing methods can be attempted as an experimental approach. On the other hand, the Finite Element Model by NX. Nastran software was developed to investigate possibility of an analytical approach. Parameters of the Finite Element Model were updated based on the results of modal survey performed on not only assembling level but also parts level. Finally, each natural frequency of the Finite Element Model was within an error of 5% up to middle range of frequency., 本報告書では、衛星の擾乱試験の手法を研究するために開発したテストベッドについて述べる。テストベッドの構造は典型的な衛星バスのロードパスを模擬するように設計されている。テストベッドにはいくつかの擾乱源を設置することが可能で、軌道上の状態を模擬するためにテストベッドを支持する境界条件も選択することが可能である。これにより実験的なアプローチとしての試験法の検証が可能となった。一方で、解析的なアプローチの可能性を研究するためにNX.Nastranを用いて有限要素モデルを作成した。このパラメータはテストベッドの全体構造だけでなく部品レベルでも実施したモーダルサーベイの結果を用いてアップデートした。最終的には、中間周波数帯まで固有振動数の値の誤差が5%以内の精度を有する有限要素モデルが作成できた。, Original contains color illustrations, 形態: カラー図版あり

Abstract

この報告は、航空機による静電浮遊炉による浮遊制御とプラズマランプ点灯実験の結果を述べたものである。微小な重力環境を航空機(MU-300)により形成した。コンピュータにより電場と試料の位置を制御した。実験の結果は、6mm直径の水滴で浮遊に成功した。この水滴は浮遊中も球形を保つ。さらに、新しい無接触浮遊制御システムのもとで自由に浮遊させることができた。試料が受ける加速度は、マイクロ重力レベルであることを確認した。この浮遊制御システムは、この方法で、液体と固体試料をともに制御できることを確認した。さらに、プラズマランプの点灯実験を行った。プラズマ均一性は微小重力環境でよくなった。静電浮遊炉の基本的性能をこれらの結果から導けることを確認できた。, This report describes the results of floating control by the electrostatic float furnace and the lighting experiment on the plasma lamp with the aircraft. The minute gravity environment is produced with aircraft (MU-300). The computer adjusts the electric field and the position of the sample. The result of the experiment succeeded in the float in 6-mm diameter drop of water. The drop of water kept globular while floating. Moreover, the sample can be freely floated under the new floating control system. Then, it was confirmed that the acceleration which the sample have received reduced to the microgravity level. It was confirmed that the float controlling system was able to be managed both solid and liquid samples by the same method. Further the lighting experiment on the plasma lamp was done. The plasma uniformity became well in the minute gravity environment.
