17. Development of high-sensitivity radon detector in water with continuous measurement

- Abstract
Radon contamination in pure water causes serious background for low energy physics in Super-Kamiokande experiment, especially, search for distortions of the solar neutrino energy spectrum induced by the MSW effect. For lowering energy threshold (currently 3.5 MeV kinetic energy), investigation of radon concentration in water with sensitivity of < 1 mBq/m3 level is important and a radon detector with sensitivity of ~0.1 mBq/m3 has been developed by using activated charcoal trap with some time delay. On the other hand, real-time monitoring of Rn concentration in water with < 1 mBq/m3 level is indispensable for more dense investigation including its time evolution. In this poster, development of high-sensitivity radon detector for water with continuous measurement is presented. It consists of existing 80 L radon detector for air with sensitivity < 1 mBq/m3 and a degasifier module located at optimized position to maximize detection efficiency.

The patient was an 81-year-old man who was found to have bacteremia due to Raoultella planticola, which might have entered the circulation through the bile duct during the passing of a gallbladder stone. In the present case, we screened for malignancies because most cases of R. planticola bacteremia occur after trauma, invasive procedures, or in patients with malignancy (70.6%). Early gastric cancer was detected. Although the association between R. planticola bacteremia and malignancy remains speculative in the present case, it may be useful to scrutinize similar cases involving low-virulence bacteremia for possible malignancies or immune conditions.

Perineal hernia is an infrequent complication of abdominoperineal resection (APR) and, currently, there is no consensus as to the optimal operative technique. Surgical repair can be achieved by either cerclage or the use of mesh or autologous tissue, and it has been reported that the recurrence rate after repair using autologous tissue is 33%. We present two post‐APR cases of severe perineal hernia with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) which did not improve after repair using mesh. We regenerated the pelvic floor using a vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous (VRAM) flap and performed a concomitant sacrocolpopexy to fix the POP. Drooping of the perineum and pelvic floor was greatly improved, and the patients have not experienced any recurrence for 6 years. This dual procedure has not been previously mentioned in the literature, and we consider this the first report of its kind. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 70-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) presented with simultaneous right oculomotor nerve palsy and right facial nerve palsy. Brain magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed no abnormality. Coexistent Sjögren’s syndrome was diagnosed on the basis of anti-SS-A antibody positivity, salivary gland scintigraphy, and histological findings on minor salivary gland biopsy. As there was no obvious cause of multiple cranial neuropathies, we supposed that the palsies were induced by either of the underlying diseases. The patient was treated with a high-dose of prednisolone and intravenous cyclophosphamide, and both palsies recovered almost completely within two weeks.

Thebehavior of water at hydrophobic interfaces can play a significantrole in determining chemical reaction outcomes and physical properties.Carbon nanotubes and aluminophosphate materials have one-dimensionalhydrophobic channels, which are entirely surrounded by hydrophobicinterfaces. Unique water behavior was observed in such hydrophobicchannels. In this article, changes in the water affinity in one-dimensionalhydrophobic channels were assessed using water vapor adsorption isothermsat 303 K and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Hydrophobicbehavior of water adsorbed in channels wider than 3 nm was observedfor both adsorption and desorption processes, owing to the hydrophobicenvironment. However, water showed hydrophilic properties in bothadsorption and desorption processes in channels narrower than 1 nm.In intermediate-sized channels, the hydrophobic properties of waterduring the adsorption process were seen to transition to hydrophilicbehavior during the desorption process. Hydrophilic properties inthe narrow channels for both adsorption and desorption processes area result of the relatively strong water–channel interactions(10–15 kJ mol–1). In the 2–3 nm channels,the water–channel interaction energy of 4–5 kJ mol–1was comparable to the thermal translational energy.The cohesive water interaction was approximately 35 kJ mol–1, which was larger than the others. Thus, the water affinity changein the 2–3 nm channels for the adsorption and desorption processeswas attributed to weak water–channel interactions and strongcohesive interactions. - Abstract
Si1-xGex is one of the prospective materials for the next-generation transistors due to its high carrier mobility, especially for high Ge concentration Si1-xGex. Inducing strain in the Si1-xGex leads to transistor performance improvement, however it is difficult to evaluate strain induced in the channel region because the strained Si1-xGex channel may be scaled down to nanosize and relaxed complicatedly. We adopted oil-immersion Raman spectroscopy to evaluate the stress in the Si1-xGex nanostructure. In this technique, the anisotropic biaxial stress state in the Si1-xGex nanostructure can be evaluated. As a result, the nanostructure size dependence of the biaxial stress states in the Si1-xGex mesa structure on the Ge substrates was obtained, which was confirmed for the Si1-xGex with 76, 85, 92% Ge concentrations.

We applied surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to the excitation of transversal optical (TO) phonos in strained SiGe. The SERS technique can greatly enhance the Raman signal owing to metal-surface plasmon resonance. Furthermore, the electrical field includes a large amount of z-polarization, which can excite TO phonons. In this study, we evaluated anisotropic biaxial stress state in thin strained-SiGe layer on a Si substrate with the SERS technique.

- Abstract
Biaxial stress states in SiGe stripes on Si substrates fabricated by a novel selective Ar+ ion implantation technique were evaluated by oil-immersion Raman spectroscopy. The oil-immersion technique is appropriate for the measurement of strain induced in nanostructure devices, because it has a higher spatial resolution than conventional Raman spectroscopy and can evaluate anisotropic stress states owing to the excitation of multiple optical phonon modes. Results indicate that quasi-uniaxial stress states exist in SiGe layers in unimplanted Si areas, which depends on the stripe-width ratio of implanted and unimplanted areas, and that quasi-uniaxial stress states are successfully induced in SiGe by the present technique, which can be considered as the channel materials of high-performance transistors.

The radioactivity background are among the most dangerous background for low energy neutrino analysis in Super-Kamiokande (SK), like the solar neutrino analysis. Among them, the main contribution is coming from $^{222}$Rn, which is spread in the detector's water due to the water source and to the photo multiplier (PMT) emanations. Up to now, its exact distribution in the detector was not known. Using our knowledge of the radon concentration in the detector water, and the SK-IV solar data, we developed a model of the radon distribution in the detector. The uncertainty on the Rn concentration associated with this model was estimated to be $\sim0.1$ mBq/m$^{3}$

Super-Kamiokande (SK) is a 50-kt water Cherenkov detector, instrumented with $\sim 13$k photo-multipliers and running since 1996. It is sensitive to neutrinos with energies ranging from 4.5 MeV to several TeV. A new framework has been developed for the follow-up of gravitational wave (GW) alerts issued by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration (LVC). Neutrinos are searched for, using a 1000-second time window centered on the alert time and in both SK low-energy and high-energy samples. Such observation can then be used to constrain the neutrino emission from the GW source. The significance of potential signals has been obtained by comparing neutrino direction with the localization of the GW. The computation of limits on incoming neutrino flux and on the total energy emitted in neutrinos by the source has been performed for the different neutrino flavors. The results using the LVC GWTC-2 catalog (covering O3a period) are presented, as well as the outlooks for the future real-time public release of follow-ups for the O4 period (in 2022) and beyond.

- Abstract
Background/aim: The number of available treatment options for urothelial carcinoma has increased recently. Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is relatively rare compared with bladder cancer. There are few reports on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for metastatic UTUC, and ICIs may occasionally show less efficacy and cause severe side effects. Therefore, it is important to predict the treatment response and change the treatment strategy as appropriate. We investigated the prognostic factors for treatment response in patients with metastatic UTUC treated with pembrolizumab at our hospital., Patients and Methods: Patients who received pembrolizumab for UTUC between January 2018 and June 2023 were analyzed. Patients who presented with bladder cancer complications at initial diagnosis were excluded. The primary endpoints assessed were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Statistical analyses were conducted using laboratory values obtained before and after pembrolizumab administration. The relationship between cancer and inflammation is important. Therefore, we analyzed this relationship using prognostic factors for urothelial carcinoma as previously reported. Specifically, pretreatment C-reactive protein (CRP) level, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and NLR/albumin values were examined., Results: Forty-seven patients were analyzed. The median PFS was 66 days (24-107 days), and the median OS was 164 days (13-314 days). A CRP level <1 before the first cycle was a useful factor in the multivariate analysis for both OS and PFS [OS: p=0.004, hazard ratio (HR)=3.244, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.464-7.104; PFS: p=0.003, HR=2.998, 95%CI=1.444-6.225]., Conclusion: CRP level is a prognostic factor for pembrolizumab treatment response in patients with UTUC., (Copyright © 2024, International Institute of Anticancer Research (Dr. George J. 44. [EFFECTS OF COMBINATION THERAPY WITH VIBEGRON FOR ANTICHOLINERGIC-RESISTANT PEDIATRIC NEUROGENIC BLADDER].

- Abstract
(Objective) We report the effectiveness of combination therapy with vibegron in pediatric patients with neurogenic bladder inadequately responding to anticholinergic agents. (Subjects and methods) This retrospective study involved 13 pediatric patients with neurogenic bladder treated with anticholinergics at our department from November 2019 to January 2021 who had an inadequate response and received combination therapy with vibegron. Changes in the volume of urinary incontinence before and after the use of vibegron reported during interviews from the 13 patients were compared. In addition, bladder capacity at the end of examination, bladder capacity at the end of examination/expected bladder capacity (EBC), and bladder compliance were compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test in 9 patients for whom urodynamics (UDS) or video urodynamics (VUDS) was performed before and after introduction of vibegron. (Results) The 13 patients comprised 8 boys and 5 girls. The median age was 13 years (range, 5-18 years). Underlying diseases included 9 cases of spina bifida, 1 case of Hinman syndrome, 1 case of cervical vertebra injury, 1 case of idiopathic cervical epidural hematoma combined with spina bifida, and 1 case of spinal cord infarction. Eight of the 13 patients experienced decrease in urinary incontinence after the introduction of vibegron. All 9 patients who underwent UDS or VUDS before and after introduction of vibegron displayed significant differences in bladder capacity at the end of the examination, bladder capacity at the end of the examination/EBC, and bladder compliance, indicating improvement. (Conclusion) Combination therapy with vibegron is effective for pediatric patients with neurogenic bladder who have inadequately responded to anticholinergic agents.
