Mission Demonstration Satellite (MDS)-1 was a demonstration satellite for commercial devices and components. There were three missions to be conducted, namely, the evaluation of commercial devices, confirmation of size and weight reduction techniques of components, and space environment data acquisition. Accordingly, there were six items of mission equipment; two, three, and one for the first, second and third mission, respectively. The purpose of commercial semiconductor device test equipment was to establish the standards for use of commercial semiconductor devices in space. The terrestrial solar cell test equipment would establish the evaluation methods for ground solar cells, polycrystalline silicon, heterogeneous structure of amorphous silicon, and InGaP/GaAs cells. The goal of CPV (Common Pressure Vessel) battery test equipment was to achieve the size, weight, and cost reductions in the satellite power supply unit with CPV nickel hydride batteries, with the particular attention paid to battery characteristics under microgravity. The solid state data recorder test equipment would demonstrate the size and weight reduction by mounting high density 64 Mbit DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) for data recording in place of magnetic tapes. The aim of parallel computer system test equipment was to demonstrate the applicability of a high performance computer system using commercial MPUs (Microprocessing Unit) and to establish fault tolerance technology against radiation. The space environment data acquisition equipment would collect space radiation data to clarify the radiation effect on the commercial components. The experimental data was to be published., ミッション実証衛星(MDS)-1は市販部品と素子の宇宙利用実証衛星であった。ミッションは3つあり、市販部品の評価、素子の小型軽量化技術の確認、宇宙環境データ取得であった。このためのミッション装置は、最初のミッションに2個、2番目のミッションに3個、最後のミッションに1個、合計6個からなった。市販半導体部品実験装置は市販半導体部品を宇宙で使用するための標準を確立することを目的とした。地上用太陽電池実験装置は地上用、多結晶シリコン、アモルファスシリコンのへテロ構造、およびInGaP/GaAsの太陽電池の評価方法の確立を目的とた。CPV(常圧容器)型バッテリ実験装置は、CPV型ニッケル水素電池による衛星の電源ユニットの小型軽量低価格化を達成することを目的としており、微少重力下での電池の特性に特に注目した。半導体レコーダ実験装置は、磁気テープの代わりに64Mbit-DRAM(ダイナミック・ランダム・アクセス・メモリ)を実装することによる小型軽量化を目指した。並列計算機システム実験装置は市販MPU(マイクロ・プロセシング・ユニット)を用いた高性能計算機システムの有用性を実証し、放射線に対するフォルト・トレランス技術を確立することを目的とした。宇宙環境計測装置は市販部品への放射線の影響を明確にするために宇宙放射線データを収集することであった。実験データの公開を予定した。

The objectives of this study were twofold: (1) to develop a high-power, wide-bandwidth optical amplifier; and (2) to apply the high-sensitivity receiver technology used for optical fiber communication with high-precision Acquisition Tracking and Pointing (ATP) technology. Major achievements were as follows. An improvement was made on the design and manufacture of an Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). The new erbium doped fiber had a larger core diameter and a lower erbium concentration than those developed in 1996. The two-stage EDFA was confirmed to provide an amplification in the bandwidth between 1,540 and 1,570 nm. An InGaAs area sensor was experimentally produced. The light receiving plane was formed by integrating 256 (16 x 16) detectors in one tip. The results of evaluation tests showed a high sensitivity for optical/electric conversion, a low dark current, a low cross-talk, and an inter-pixel uniformity of three percent or less. Finally, feedback loop tests were conducted on the beam trapping mechanism produced in 1995., 本研究の目的は(1)高出力、広帯域光増幅器の開発、および(2)高精密捕捉・追跡・ポインティング(ATP)技術を持つ光ファイバ通信に使用される高感度受信機技術の応用であった。主な成果は次の通りであった。エルビウム添加ファイバ増幅器(EDFA)の設計および製造を改良した。新しいエルビウム添加ファイバは1996年に開発したものよりも広いコア直径を持ち低いエルビウム濃度であった。2段EDFAは1,540から1,570nmの範囲で30nm幅の増幅を持つことを確認した。InGaAs面センサを試験的に製作した。受光面を256(16×16)個の検出器を1個のチップに集積させて作成した。評価試験の結果、光・電気変換に対して高い感度、低い暗電流、低い混信、および3%またはそれ以下の素子間均一性を持つことを示した。最後に、1995年に試作したビーム結合機構のフィードバックループ試験を行った。

This research was performed for the purpose of collecting and evaluating long-term reliability data for five years, for the Optical disk Data Recorder (ODR) as a fast, high-capacity on-board data storage device. The test items, measurement items, and the results were shown in the tables, and structures of test samples were illustrated. The lifetime evaluation tests were conducted by the measurement of the mechanical abrasion of spindle bearings in the optical disk unit and the optical head carriage in the linear-access unit. The measurements were carried out on hermeticity of chassis, inner pressure change in chassis, and contamination by the lubricant, and sealing characteristics of the fluorine rubber O-ring. The evaluation tests for ODR system yielded satisfactory results., 搭載用大容量データ蓄積装置としての光ディスクデータレコーダ(ODR)について、5年間にわたる長期間信頼性データの収集およびその評価の研究を行った。試験項目、測定項目内容、および評価試験結果について表にまとめ、あわせてテストサンプルの構造の概観を図に示した。この寿命評価試験は光ディスクユニットのスピンドル軸受け、光ヘッドキャリッジの直進形アクセスユニットについての機械的磨耗の測定、筐体内の圧力変化、密封度の測定、および潤滑剤による汚染と各種ゴム丸型リングのシーリング特性について行った。このODRシステムに関する評価試験の結果はほぼ総て良好であった。
