Rational combination of plasmonic and all-dielectric concepts within unique hybrid nanomaterials provides promising route toward devices with ultimate performance and extended modalities. However, spectral matching of plasmonic and Mie-type resonances for such nanostructures can only be achieved for their dissimilar characteristic sizes, thus making the resulting hybrid nanostructure geometry complex for practical realization and large-scale replication. Here, we produced unique amorphous TiO$_2$ nanospheres simultaneously decorated and doped with Au nanoclusters via single-step nanosecond-laser ablation of commercially available TiO$_2$ nanopowders dispersed in aqueous HAuCl$_4$. The fabricated hybrids demonstrate remarkable light-absorbing properties (averaged value $\approx$ 96%) in the visible and near-IR spectral range mediated by bandgap reduction of the laser-processed amorphous TiO$_2$, as well as plasmon resonances of the decorating Au nanoclusters, which was confirmed by combining optical spectroscopy, advanced electron energy loss spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electromagnetic modeling. Excellent light-absorbing and plasmonic properties of the produced hybrids were implemented to demonstrate catalytically passive SERS biosensor for identification of analytes at trace concentrations and solar steam generator that permitted to increase water evaporation rate by 2.5 times compared with that of pure water under identical one-sun irradiation conditions., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Major construction and initial-phase operation of a second-generation gravitational-wave detector KAGRA has been completed. The entire 3-km detector is installed underground in a mine in order to be isolated from background seismic vibrations on the surface. This allows us to achieve a good sensitivity at low frequencies and high stability of the detector. Bare-bones equipment for the interferometer operation has been installed and the first test run was accomplished in March and April of 2016 with a rather simple configuration. The initial configuration of KAGRA is named {\it iKAGRA}. DIOS (Diffuse Intergalactic Oxygen Surveyor) is a small satellite aiming for a launch around 2020 with JAXA's Epsilon rocket. Its main aim is a search for warm-hot intergalactic medium with high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of redshifted emission lines from OVII and OVIII ions. The superior energy resolution of TES microcalorimeters combined with a very wide field of view (30--50 arcmin diameter) will enable us to look into gas dynamics of cosmic plasmas in a wide range of spatial scales from Earth's magnetosphere to unvirialized regions of clusters of galaxies. Mechanical and thermal design of the spacecraft and development of the TES calorimeter system are described. Detector-plane prototypes of the very forward calorimetry of a future detector at an e+e- collider have been built and their performance was measured in an electron beam. The detector plane comprises silicon or GaAs pad sensors, dedicated front-end and ADC ASICs, and an FPGA for data concentration. Measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio and the response as a function of the position of the sensor are presented. A deconvolution method is successfully applied, and a comparison of the measured shower shape as a function of the absorber depth with a Monte-Carlo simulation is given., Comment: 25 pages, 32 figures, revised version following comments from referees

Little is known about morphological instability of a solidification front during the crystal growth of a thin film of flowing supercooled liquid with a free surface: for example, the ring-like ripples on the surface of icicles. The length scale of the ripples is nearly 1 cm. Two theoretical models for the ripple formation mechanism have been proposed. However, these models lead to quite different results because of differences in the boundary conditions at the solid-liquid interface and liquid-air surface. The validity of the assumption used in the two models is numerically investigated and some of the theoretical predictions are compared with experiments., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

In this paper, we summarize the high power testing results of the X-band mixed-mode RF windows at KEK and SLAC for linear colliders. The main feature of these windows is that the combination of modes on the surface of the ceramic significantly decreases the electric and magnetic fields in the junction between the ceramic and the metal. So far two types of high power windows (with the diameter of 53 mm and 64 mm) have been fabricated. A high power model of the smaller type window was fabricated and tested in a resonant ring at KEK. A maximum circulating power of 81 MW with 300 ns duration or 66 MW with 700 ns duration was achieved. Light emission was observed for a power level of over 10 MW. Later, both windows were shipped to SLAC for even higher power testing using combined power from two klystrons. The first window (53 mm diameter) achieved a transmitted power of 80 MW with 1.5 microsec duration at 30 Hz repetition. It was not destroyed during the testing. The testing of the second window was carried out next to the small type and achieved 62 MW with 1.5 maicrosec duration with 10 Hz repetition. Spurious oscillations in klystrons due to returning electrons from the collector into the drift tube were observed and studied at KEK. The construction of the 60-MeV proton linac has started as a low-energy front of the KEK/JAERI Joint Project for a high-intensity proton accelerator facility at KEK. The accelerating frequency is 324 MHz. Five UHF klystrons are used as an rf source; their ratings have a maximum power of 3 MW, a beam pulse width of a 700 micro-sec (an rf pulse width is 650 micro-sec) and a repetition rate of 50 pps. We have manufactured a proto-type rf source (a power-supply system with a modulating-anode pulse modulator and prototype klystrons). In this paper, the specifications and developments of the rf source, including the WR-2300 waveguide system, are summarized. During the manufacturing process, strong oscillations due to back-going electrons from the collector were observed. This phenomenon was analyzed both experimentally and theoretically. We study a Wess-Zumino-Witten model with target space AdS_3 x (S^3 x S^3 x S^1)/Z_2. This allows us to construct space-time N=3 superconformal theories. By combining left-, and right-moving parts through a GSO and a Z_2 projections, a new asymmetric (N,\bar{N})=(3,1) model is obtained. It has an extra gauge (affine) SU(2) symmetry in the target space of the type IIA string.
