Ultrasound scanning of the rectus femoris (RF) and vastus intermedius (VI) was performed at three locations (from mid- to distal thigh). The MT of the RF and VI and EI of the RF were measured. MRI-derived MV, IntraMAT, and muscle strength of the QF were measured.Results: The correlation between RF-MT and RF-MV weakened as scanning approached the distal thigh, and the difference between the coefficients for the scanning locations was significant for women. However, the correlation of VI-MT with VI-MV and that of the combined MT of RF and VI with the MV of the whole QF and muscle strength were comparable among the scanning locations for both sexes. The correlation of RF-EI with the IntraMAT of the RF and the whole QF and muscle strength was also comparable among the scanning locations for both sexes.Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that ultrasound measurements at the distal thigh can predict MV, IntraMAT, and muscle strength of the QF to the same degree as those at the mid-thigh.Keywords: ultrasound scanning, rectus femoris, thigh, muscle strength, MRI

A lower value of SampEn indicates lower complexity of COP variability, that is, rigidity, and lower degrees of freedom. Previous studies reported the association of increased SampEn with improved standing balance ability in young subjects. However, no studies have examined these relationships among older adults. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between SampEn and standing balance ability in older adults.Subjects and methods: The subjects were 33 institutionalized older adults (aged 82.2±6.5 years). COP during static standing was measured. The standard deviation (SD) values of COP and SampEn in the sagittal and frontal planes were calculated using time series data. One-leg standing test (OLST), functional reach (FR) test, and lateral reach (LR) test were also measured to evaluate standing balance ability.Results: OLST, FR, and LR were 6.5±8.3 s, 19.8±5.9 cm, and 18.2±6.4 cm, respectively. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that SampEn in the sagittal plane significantly correlated with OLST (r=-0.35) and FR (r=-0.36). However, SampEn in the frontal plane and SD of COP in both sagittal and frontal planes had no relationship with any of the clinical balance tests.Conclusion: Lower SampEn implies rigidity for postural control. In the present study, it was found that lower SampEn in the sagittal plane was related to a higher balance function, which suggests that older adults utilized body rigidity to maintain postural stability as a compensative strategy. Abstract

Background: About 20% of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) showed tip-toe behavior (TTB). This behavior may be related to a decreased ankle joint range of motion (ROM) in dorsiflexion. Physiologically, gastrocnemius (GM) and soleus (SM) muscles influence ankle ROM independently. However, no studies investigated the relationship between the amount of time individuals with ASD spend in TTB and GM and SM muscle lengths. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between three mutually exclusive clinical patterns of TTB i.e., during standing, walking and running (TTB Class 1), or during walking and running (TTB Class 2), or only when running (TTB Class 3), and GM and SM muscle lengths. Methods: Sixty-nine individuals with ASD (average age: 14.1 ± 3.6 years, 56 males) were enrolled. In a clinical setting, SM and GM muscle lengths of both legs were assessed through a manual goniometer. Measurements were performed by two trained assessors blinded to TTB classifications. Results: Individuals with ASD classified as TTB Class 1 demonstrated a shortening of both GM and SM compared with NO-TTB and TTB Class 3 individuals. Conclusions: Our results support the relationship between TTB severity and GM and SM shortening assessed by a decreased ankle joint ROM in dorsiflexion. Further studies are needed to determine the factors associated with TTB and decreased ankle ROM.

7. The Relationship between Infection-Avoidance Tendency and Exclusionary Attitudes towards Foreigners: A Case Study of the COVID-19 Outbreak in Japan

Abstract

Amidst the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 in January 2020, this study focused on the preventive behaviours against COVID-19 infection and the exclusionary attitude towards foreigners in Japan. Particularly, we examined the effects of individual differences in the infection-avoidance tendency based on the behavioural immune system. A web survey of 1,248 Japanese citizens aged 18 years or above living in Japan who were registrants of a crowdsourcing service indicated that as the threat of the COVID-19 spread increased, there were tendencies for infection-preventive behaviours to increase. In addition, people with a strong infection-avoidance tendency adopted more preventive actions, regardless of whether they were under normal circumstances or the threat of infection, indicating their strong rejective attitudes towards the Chinese and other foreigners under the threat of infection. This study recorded the behavioural and psychological states of people who were in the midst of rapid and unpredictable real-world changes in the early stages of the infection. Data collected in Japan, where the infection had begun earlier, will provide valuable knowledge to countries worldwide where major social changes are expected in the future.

Abstract

The shelf life of banana shrimp preserved in ice is four days and at -3 degree celsius it is 6, days and at -10 degree celsius it is 9 weeks. Treatment with NaHSO3 increases the shelf life of ice stored shrimp. Formaldehyde, K-value and basic nitrogen are nice indicators for shrimp shelf life studies, particularly during frozen storage. The shrimp are at their shelf life limit when formaldehyde goes beyond 1,80 ppm.

Abstract

An examination of the efficacy of zinc sulfate reagent to derive formaldehyde from Penaeus merguienesis muscle vis-a-vis acid extraction and steam distillation reveals that zinc sulfate reagent provides the highest percentage recovery, matching the steam distillation process. This process of deriving formaldehyde from shrimp is more sensitive than acid extraction. It is also more rapid and less expensive.

Abstract

Purpose Stargardt disease 3 (STGD3) is a juvenile macular dystrophy caused by mutations in the elongase of very long-chain fatty acids-like 4 (ELOVL4) gene, which encodes an elongase involved in the production of extremely long-chain fatty acids. The STGD3-related mutations cause production of C-terminally truncated proteins (ELOVL4ΔC). STGD3 is transmitted in an autosomal dominant manner. To date, molecular mechanisms of this pathology have been proposed based solely on the interaction between wild-type ELOVL4 and ELOVL4ΔC. However, analyses of Elovl4ΔC knockin mice revealed reduced levels of not only ELOVL4 substrates, but also of fatty acids with a broad spectrum of chain lengths. Therefore, we investigated the molecular mechanisms responsible for ELOVL4ΔC affecting the entire very long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) elongation pathway. Methods The ELOVL4ΔC protein was expressed in HEK 293T cells, and its effect on elongase activities toward several acyl-CoAs were examined. We also investigated the homo- and hetero-oligomerization of ELOVL4ΔC with other elongases (ELOVL1–7) or with other enzymes involved in VLCFA elongation using coimmunoprecipitation experiments. Results We found that ELOVL4ΔC forms a homo-oligomer more strongly than wild-type ELOVL4. ELOVL4ΔC also interacts strongly with other elongases, although similar interactions for wild-type ELOVL4 were observed as only weak. In addition, ELOVL4ΔC is able to form an elongase complex by interacting with other components of the VLCFA elongation machinery, similar to wild-type ELOVL4. Conclusions We propose that not only the ELOVL4-ELOVL4ΔC homo-oligomeric interaction, but also several hetero-oligomeric interactions, may contribute to the pathology of STGD3.

Abstract

The most common benign tumor of the liver is cavernous hemangioma, a congenital tumor of large blood-filled cystic spaces or dilated blood vessels. The incidence of this tumor on autopsy is about 2 percent. Once identified, despite its benign status and the rare occurrence of rupture, it is often removed. Treatment of these hemangiomas is controversial. A review was undertaken of 33 patients diagnosed with cavernous hemangioma of the liver. Thirteen patients underwent surgery and 20 were observed. Both patient groups had similar symptoms (epigastric pain, back pain). The indications for surgery included: tumors larger than 5 cm (2 inches), especially if the patient might be exposed to abdominal injury; presence of pain or epigastric discomfort; rapid growth or rupture; or hemangioma-thrombocytopenia syndrome. There were no deaths in the group of patients undergoing surgery; two patients developed upper gastrointestinal bleeding and one, abnormal liver function. These patients were followed for up to 143 months; no patient developed recurrence. The patients who did not undergo surgery were followed for from 18 months to eight years. No enlargement of the tumor or rupture occurred during this period of observation. It is concluded that most small (under 5 cm) hemangiomas can be managed by observation; tumors larger than 5 cm may also be observed if they do not cause symptoms or show rapid growth. Abstract

To measure the blood flow of a common carotid artery (CCA) during parabolic flight in the rat, we developed an animal double hold box (ADHB) made of styrene expanded form for the anesthetized rat to keep the animal at a proper posture in an aircaft. Twelve anesthetized rats weighing 291-342 g were surgically operated to mount a ultrasound flowmeter probe (1 mm size,1RS:Transonic Systems Inc.) around the right CCA and to insert a catheter into the right axillar artery for blood pressure measurement. These animals were held comfortably in ADHBs which were placed on the rack installed in the aircraft (MU-300). A total of 27 parabolic flights was performed and the blood flow was measured accurately in 9 rats. This special animal holding facility is useful for various types of animal experiments in an aircraft.
