The mini proceedings of the "Fourth International Workshop on the Extension Project for the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility (HEF-ex 2024) [https://kds.kek.jp/event/46965]" held at J-PARC, February 19-21, 2024, are presented. The workshop was devoted to discussing the physics case that connects both the present and the future Hadron Experimental Facility at J-PARC, covering a wide range of topics in flavor, hadron, and nuclear physics related to both experimental and theoretical activities being conducted at the facility.

This work studies $\bar{p}$-Ca atom spectra in light of the strong shifts and level widths, using the optical model with several types of parametric coefficients. The spectroscopic quantities are obtained as the eigenvalues of the Dirac equation, where the nuclear densities computed via nuclear Density Functional Theory and the effect of the anomalous magnetic moment are incorporated. The results indicate that the isovector term's contribution to the optical potential is crucial for explaining the systematical differences in the strong shifts between $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca. Furthermore, it is found that both the strong shifts and the level widths exhibit significant dependence on the nuclear density profiles. These findings provide critical insights into the nuclear structures, particularly in the context of Calcium isotopes, by offering a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying nuclear-hadron properties., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 12 tables

We theoretically investigate kaonic atom states based on the latest high precision data of the $2p$ states of the kaonic atoms in $^3$He and $^4$He (J-PARC E62). We consider the phenomenological form for the optical potential proportional to the nuclear density distributions and determine the potential parameters by the latest data. We find two sets of potential parameters for each of $K^--^3$He and $K^--^4$He that reproduce the data. We then extract the potential parameters consistent with the data of $^3$He and $^4$He atoms simultaneously. Using the potential, we investigate the structure of the kaonic atoms and kaonic nuclei for various nuclei up to Sn. We also report the optical potential parameters suited for the global description of the atomic data, the possible strong isospin dependence of the potential, and the different strength of the data of $K^--^3$He and $K^--^4$He in the restrictions on the potential parameters. In addition, we find that the study of the $1s$ states of the kaonic helium atom is very interesting as a next step, and the determination of the orbital angular momenta of the kaonic nuclear states is helpful for the unified understandings of the atomic and nuclear bound states of kaon because of the mutual influence between the atomic and the nuclear states of kaon with the same orbital angular momentum., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

We study theoretically the feasibility of the semi-exclusive $^{12}$C($p,dp$)$X$ reaction for the observation of $\eta^\prime$ mesic nuclei using the transport model JAM. The semi-exclusive measurements of the ($p,d$) reaction with protons from $\eta^\prime$ non-mesonic two-body absorption ($\eta^\prime NN \to NN$) are found to be critically important for the observation of the $\eta^\prime$ bound states. The Green's function method is used to calculate the momentum spectrum of forward going deuterons corresponding to the excitation energy spectrum of the $\eta^\prime \otimes {}^{11}$C system in the semi-exclusive measurement. Accurate ocean dynamics modeling is crucial for enhancing understanding of ocean circulation, predicting climate variability, and tackling challenges posed by climate change. Despite improvements in traditional numerical models, predicting global ocean variability over multi-year scales remains challenging. Here, we propose ORCA-DL (Oceanic Reliable foreCAst via Deep Learning), the first data-driven 3D ocean model for seasonal to decadal prediction of global ocean circulation. ORCA-DL accurately simulates three-dimensional ocean dynamics and outperforms state-of-the-art dynamical models in capturing extreme events, including El Ni\~no-Southern Oscillation and upper ocean heatwaves. This demonstrates the high potential of data-driven models for efficient and accurate global ocean forecasting. Moreover, ORCA-DL stably emulates ocean dynamics at decadal timescales, demonstrating its potential even for skillful decadal predictions and climate projections.

Specular reflection of neutrons on material surfaces has been demonstrated in the energy range of 0.09-0.7 eV. The results suggest that the applicable energy range of reflective neutron optics can be extended to the near-epithermal region by using existing techniques.

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has shown remarkable success in solving relatively complex tasks, yet the deployment of RL systems in real-world scenarios poses significant challenges related to safety and robustness. This paper aims to identify and further understand those challenges thorough the exploration of the main dimensions of the safe and robust RL landscape, encompassing algorithmic, ethical, and practical considerations. We conduct a comprehensive review of methodologies and open problems that summarizes the efforts in recent years to address the inherent risks associated with RL applications. After discussing and proposing definitions for both safe and robust RL, the paper categorizes existing research works into different algorithmic approaches that enhance the safety and robustness of RL agents. We examine techniques such as uncertainty estimation, optimisation methodologies, exploration-exploitation trade-offs, and adversarial training. Environmental factors, including sim-to-real transfer and domain adaptation, are also scrutinized to understand how RL systems can adapt to diverse and dynamic surroundings. Moreover, human involvement is an integral ingredient of the analysis, acknowledging the broad set of roles that humans can take in this context. Importantly, to aid practitioners in navigating the complexities of safe and robust RL implementation, this paper introduces a practical checklist derived from the synthesized literature. The checklist encompasses critical aspects of algorithm design, training environment considerations, and ethical guidelines. It will serve as a resource for developers and policymakers alike to ensure the responsible deployment of RL systems in many application domains.

Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) is an observational method to obtain spatially resolved spectra over a specific field of view (FoV) in a single exposure. In recent years, near-infrared IFS has gained importance in observing objects with strong dust attenuation or at high redshift. One limitation of existing near-infrared IFS instruments is their relatively small FoV, less than 100 arcsec$^2$, compared to optical instruments. Therefore, we have developed a near-infrared (0.9-2.5 $\mathrm{\mu}$m) image-slicer type integral field unit (IFU) with a larger FoV of 13.5 $\times$ 10.4 arcsec$^2$ by matching a slice width to a typical seeing size of 0.4 arcsec. The IFU has a compact optical design utilizing off-axis ellipsoidal mirrors to reduce aberrations. Complex optical elements were fabricated using an ultra-precision cutting machine to achieve RMS surface roughness of less than 10 nm and a P-V shape error of less than 300 nm. The ultra-precision machining can also simplify alignment procedures. The on-sky performance evaluation confirmed that the image quality and the throughput of the IFU were as designed. In conclusion, we have successfully developed a compact IFU utilizing an ultra-precision cutting technique, almost fulfilling the requirements., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, 7 tables. Discrete homotopy theory or A-homotopy theory is a combinatorial homotopy theory defined on graphs, simplicial complexes and metric spaces, reflecting information about their connectivity. The purpose of the present paper is to further understanding of the similarities between the A-homotopy and ordinary homotopy theories. In the present paper, we provide a cohomology group as a categorification of the characteristic polynomial of matroids. The construction depends on the ``quasi-representation'' of a matroid. For a certain choice of the quasi-representation, we show that our cohomology theory gives a generalization of the chromatic cohomology introduced by L. Helme-Guizon and Y. Rong, and also the characteristic cohomology introduced by Z. Dancso and A. Licata., Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures

As our planet is entering into the "global boiling" era, understanding regional climate change becomes imperative. Effective downscaling methods that provide localized insights are crucial for this target. Traditional approaches, including computationally-demanding regional dynamical models or statistical downscaling frameworks, are often susceptible to the influence of downscaling uncertainty. Here, we address these limitations by introducing a diffusion probabilistic downscaling model (DPDM) into the meteorological field. This model can efficiently transform data from 1{\deg} to 0.1{\deg} resolution. Compared with deterministic downscaling schemes, it not only has more accurate local details, but also can generate a large number of ensemble members based on probability distribution sampling to evaluate the uncertainty of downscaling. Additionally, we apply the model to generate a 180-year dataset of monthly surface variables in East Asia, offering a more detailed perspective for understanding local scale climate change over the past centuries.

CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to $\simeq 20$ GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in November 2019, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data since then. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the basic performance parameters of the telescope. The data sample consists of around 36 hours of observations at low zenith angles collected between November 2020 and March 2022. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period - only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is estimated to be around 20 GeV, rising to $\simeq 30$ GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.12 to 0.40 degrees, and energy resolution from 15 to 50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50-h observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03 - 30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. The detection of low-frequency gravitational waves on Earth requires the reduction of displacement noise, which dominates the low-frequency band. One method to cancel test mass displacement noise is a neutron displacement-noise-free interferometer (DFI). This paper proposes a new neutron DFI configuration, a Sagnac-type neutron DFI, which uses a Sagnac interferometer in place of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We demonstrate that a sensitivity of the Sagnac-type neutron DFI is higher than that of a conventional neutron DFI with the same interferometer scale. This configuration is particularly significant for neutron DFIs with limited space for construction and limited flux from available neutron sources., Comment: 17 pages, 6figures

It is well-known that the approximate factor models have the rotation indeterminacy. It has been considered that the principal component (PC) estimators estimate some rotations of the true factors and factor loadings, but the rotation matrix commonly used in the literature depends on the PC estimator itself. This raises a question: what does the PC estimator consistently estimate? This paper aims to explore the answer. We first show that, assuming a quite general weak factor model with the $r$ signal eigenvalues diverging possibly at different rates, there always exists a unique rotation matrix composed only of the true factors and loadings, such that it rotates the true model to the identifiable model satisfying the standard $r^2$ restrictions. We call the rotated factors and loadings the pseudo-true parameters. We next establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the PC estimator for this pseudo-true parameter. The results give an answer for the question: the PC estimator consistently estimates the pseudo-true parameter. We also investigate similar problems in the factor augmented regression. Finite sample experiments confirm the excellent approximation of the theoretical results.

This paper explores proof-theoretic semantics, a formal approach to inferential semantics. It derives sentence meaning from formalized proofs, building upon Gentzen and Prawitz's work. The study addresses challenges in understanding how proofs contribute to sentence meaning. In this setting, classical logic poses "Dummett's challenge" due to its mismatch with the proof-theoretic framework designed for intuitionist logic. For example, in Rumfitt's bilateral classical logic (BCL), the justification of coordination rules, notably RAA, is contentious. This paper employs the notion of validity, introduced by Prawitz, to provide a comprehensive justification for BCL, defining valid arguments and demonstrating its soundness. It resolves the circularity associated with RAA using fixed-point construction. Notably, this approach relies on impredicative comprehension but without on the excluded middle principle, suggesting that bivalence may not be essential for justifying classical logic.

In this paper, we prove measurability of event for which a general continuous-time stochastic process satisfies continuous-time Metric Temporal Logic (MTL) formula. Continuous-time MTL can define temporal constrains for physical system in natural way. Then there are several researches that deal with probability of continuous MTL semantics for stochastic processes. However, proving measurability for such events is by no means an obvious task, even though it is essential. The difficulty comes from the semantics of "until operator", which is defined by logical sum of uncountably many propositions. Given the difficulty involved in proving the measurability of such an event using classical measure-theoretic methods, we employ a theorem from stochastic analysis. This theorem is utilized to prove the measurability of hitting times for stochastic processes, and it stands as a profound result within the theory of capacity. Next, we provide an example that illustrates the failure of probability approximation when discretizing the continuous semantics of MTL formulas with respect to time. Additionally, we prove that the probability of the discretized semantics converges to that of the continuous semantics when we impose restrictions on diamond operators to prevent nesting.

Sparse index tracking is a prominent passive portfolio management strategy that constructs a sparse portfolio to track a financial index. A sparse portfolio is preferable to a full portfolio in terms of reducing transaction costs and avoiding illiquid assets. To achieve portfolio sparsity, conventional studies have utilized $\ell_p$-norm regularizations as a continuous surrogate of the $\ell_0$-norm regularization. Although these formulations can construct sparse portfolios, their practical application is challenging due to the intricate and time-consuming process of tuning parameters to define the precise upper limit of assets in the portfolio. In this paper, we propose a new problem formulation of sparse index tracking using an $\ell_0$-norm constraint that enables easy control of the upper bound on the number of assets in the portfolio. Moreover, our approach offers a choice between constraints on portfolio and turnover sparsity, further reducing transaction costs by limiting asset updates at each rebalancing interval. Furthermore, we develop an efficient algorithm for solving this problem based on a primal-dual splitting method. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method through experiments on the S&P500 and Russell3000 index datasets., Comment: Submitted to IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing

This study entailed the successful deployment of a novel neutron interferometer that utilizes multilayer mirrors. The apparatus facilitates a precise evaluation of the wavelength dependence of interference fringes utilizing a pulsed neutron source. Our interferometer achieved an impressive precision of 0.02 rad within a 20-min of recording time. Compared to systems using silicon crystals, the measurement sensitivity was maintained even when using a simplified disturbance suppressor. By segregating beam paths entirely, we achieved successful measurements of neutron-nuclear scattering lengths across various samples. The values measured for Si, Al, and Ti were in agreement with those found in the literature, while V showed a disparity of 45%. This discrepancy may be attributable to impurities encountered in previous investigations. The accuracy of measurements can be enhanced further by mitigating systematic uncertainties that are associated with neutron wavelength, sample impurity, and thickness. This novel neutron interferometer enables us to measure fundamental parameters, such as the neutron-nuclear scattering length of materials, with a precision that surpasses that of conventional interferometers.
