1. Experimental Study of Polarization Characteristics of Terahertz Emission

Abstract

In this article, we present an experimental study of the polarization characteristics of the emission intensity from the surface of a material using terahertz (THz) passive measurements. We developed an experimental system and method to measure the intensity of a sample at several emission angles with vertical and horizontal polarization relative to the plane of the sample surface within a 5 K error in the brightness temperature. Emissions at 280 and 490 GHz wavebands were measured using subharmonic mixer receivers with Schottky barrier diodes operating at room temperature. We measured the intensity of radiation from a magnetic substance-loading material called MF110, which is used as a calibration hot load of THz radiometers because of its low reflectivity and light weight. Although the experimental conditions limited the range of the emission angle and temperatures of the sample and experimental system, it was confirmed that the polarization characteristics of the emission at each emission angle were in accordance with the Fresnel equations. Because the optical system in the experiment used a polarization rotator and a movable ellipsoidal mirror that enabled the receiver to remain stable, a highly sensitive system to measure sample emission was developed.

2. Effect of Sports Club Activities on the Physique and Physical Fitness of Young Japanese Males

Abstract

This study compared the growth and development of the physique and physical fitness of young Japanese males who belong to sports clubs and those who did not based on longitudinal data obtained over four years. Physique and physical fitness tests were administered to 253 healthy male technical college students four times from the 9 to 12 grade. Subjects were divided into two groups: those who did not belong to an extra-curricular sports club (control group: CG, n = 126), and those who belonged to sports clubs (exercise group: EG, n = 127). Sit-ups, side-stepping, 20 m shuttle run, 50 m run and handball throwing tests and a total score were superior in the EG compared to the CG. Differences between the two groups in body mass, Rohrer's index, six physical fitness tests (except for a handgrip and 50 m run), and the total score increased with grade. The CG was inferior in overall physical fitness to the EG, especially in whole body endurance. It is highly possible that sports club activities significantly and positively affect the growth and development young males during the growth period under 19-years-old and that inactivity inhibits the development of whole body endurance.

Abstract

１H-１３C correlation spectroscopy（H-C COSY）分析による Candida tropicalis NBRC １６４７ 細胞壁マンナンを構造解析したところ、８つの H１-C１ 相関クロスピークが得られた。マンナンを構成するマンノース残基に相当するクロスピークを帰属した結果、C. tropicalis マンナンは、α-１,６-結合マンノース残基が連結する主鎖と、α-１,２- およびβ-１,２-結合マンノース残基から成る側鎖により構成される櫛状構造であることが証明された。以上により、櫛状マンナンの構造解析において、２次元 H-C COSY 解析は、two-dimensional nuclear Hartmann-Hahn（２D-HOHAHA）分析と同等に高い精度であることが明らかとなった。, Analysis of Candida tropicalis NBRC １６４７ cell wall mannan by １H-１３C correlation spectroscopy （H-C COSY）appeared eight cross-peaks of anomeric protons and carbon on two-dimensional map. As a result of assigning the cross-peaks corresponding to the mannose units of the mannan, it became clear that this comb-shaped molecule is formed by a linear α-１,６-linked polymannosyl backbone and several oligomannosyl side chains consisting of α-１,２- and β-１,２-linkages.In this study, it was revealed that the high precision of the two-dimensional H-C COSY analysis in the structural study of comb-shaped mannan is almost the same as that of the twodimensional nuclear Hartmann-Hahn（２D-HOHAHA）analysis.

42. Model simulations of chemical effects of sprites in relation with observed HO2 enhancements over sprite-producing thunderstorms

Abstract

Recently, measurements by the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb Emission Sounder (SMILES) satellite instrument have been presented which indicate an increase in mesospheric HO2 above sprite-producing thunderstorms. The aim of this paper is to compare these observations to model simulations of chemical sprite effects. A plasma chemistry model in combination with a vertical transport module was used to simulate the impact of a streamer discharge in the altitude range 70–80 km, corresponding to one of the observed sprite events. Additionally, a horizontal transport and dispersion model was used to simulate advection and expansion of the sprite air masses. The model simulations predict a production of hydrogen radicals mainly due to reactions of proton hydrates formed after the electrical discharge. The net effect is a conversion of water molecules into H+OH. This leads to increasing HO2 concentrations a few hours after the electric breakdown. Due to the modelled long-lasting increase in HO2 after a sprite discharge, an accumulation of HO2 produced by several sprites appears possible. However, the number of sprites needed to explain the observed HO2 enhancements is unrealistically large. At least for the lower measurement tangent heights, the production mechanism of HO2 predicted by the model might contribute to the observed enhancements.
