11. What Contributes to the Intention of Tourism Majors in Korea to Acquire Foreign Language Skills?

Abstract

Graduates with strong foreign language skills (FLS) have an advantage when applying for a job. Underpinned by the theory of planned behavior, this research aimed at examining influences on the intentions of tourism majors in a Korean university to acquire FLS. A first survey was conducted with 256 students who had completed two or more semesters in the program. A second survey was administered with 134 students who had newly entered the program. Overall, the attitudes and subjective norms were found to be significant contributors, while behavioral control appeared to be less influential in regard to the students' intentions to acquire FLS. Different interventions to influence the students' intentions to acquire FLS should be considered based on the students' enrollment periods. Effects can be larger on students within certain enrollment periods if interventions are targeted at normative beliefs, while effects may be larger on students who are new to the program if interventions highlight control beliefs.

Abstract

Interpretive guides play an indispensable role in achieving tourism and sustainability outcomes. Although interpretation theory and best practice principles are supported by literature, they have been primarily developed in Western countries. Little work has been done to evaluate the cross-cultural applicability of using Western-based interpretation in training non-Western interpretive guides. This study evaluates the use of Western-based interpretive competencies in a Japanese training context. The efficacy of the training was assessed using quantitative and qualitative pre- and post-training data from all 42 trainees. Training programs were successful in improving trainees’ perceptions of the importance of links between individual roles and organisational goals, TORE (thematic / organised / relevant / enjoyable) qualities, story development, and reflection. They also improved trainees’ perceptions of their own capacity related to TORE. However, programs did not impact trainees’ ratings of their capacity to use storytelling or to foster reflection in their interpretive tours. These findings suggest that, when informed by the literature and research, Western-based interpretive competencies can successfully equip Japanese interpretive guides to utilise best practice principles to meet interpretive and organisational goals. Improvements, such as practice and reflective opportunities, are suggested for future training. More knowledge and evidence are needed to build a training framework that can help interpretive guides in other non-Western contexts to make use of best practice interpretation in their work.

Abstract

Sleep problems are especially serious in Japan. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the effects of a shift of residence to a mountain village on children's melatonin responses. The participants were 19 children (nine males and ten females, 10–15 years old) who participated in the Mountain Village Educational Program. After excluding a girl with confirmed deficits, the data of 18 participants were used for analysis. We measured salivary melatonin concentration and assessed the self-completed questionnaire survey on sleep situation. Although the proportion of people who showed a greater salivary melatonin concentration at night than in the morning immediately after starting the Mountain Village Educational Program was 50%, after that it was shown that melatonin concentration increased at night and decreased in the morning. The results demonstrated that all participants showed a salivary melatonin secretion pattern of night > morning after approximately 3.5 months. Based on these findings, the Mountain Village Educational Program, which involves a shift of residence to a mountain village, has the potential to improve children's sleep.
