Although multiple review studies have supported the superior effects of an external compared with internal focus, these reviews are based on performance outcomes. Currently, the literature lacks knowledge regarding the effects of external/internal foci on individuals' perceptions, which may provide further explanations for how attentional focus affects performance. Therefore, the present study conducted a systematic review of survey/questionnaire data of participants' thoughts and emotions from laboratory studies. The authors used ERIC, SPORTDiscus, PsycArticle, CINAHL Plus, Health Source Nursing Academic edition, and PubMed search engines. Literature specific to external/ internal focus effects on motor learning or performance were reviewed (N = 37). The results showed that participants generally adhered to the assigned attentional focus instruction and there was a trend that preference may affect the attentional focus effects, but the results were inconsistent regarding if attentional focus cues affected the magnitude of adherence and mental demands. There were substantial differences in methodologies and theoretical issues of measuring these data. Future studies should adopt inferential statistics, choose theoretically relevant questions in a priori manner, or, at minimum, propose a hypothesis for the selected question.

Oxidative stress hinders tissue regeneration in cell therapy by inducing apoptosis and dysfunction in transplanted cells. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) reinforces cellular antioxidant capabilities by increasing a major cellular endogenous antioxidant molecule, glutathione, and promotes osteogenic differentiation. This study investigates the effects of pretreatment of osteoblast-like cells with NAC on oxidative stress-induced apoptosis and dysfunction and bone regeneration in local transplants. Rat femur bone marrow-derived osteoblast-like cells preincubated for 3 h with and without 5 mM NAC were cultured in a NAC-free osteogenic differentiation medium with continuous exposure to 50 μM hydrogen peroxide to induce oxidative stress. NAC preincubation prevented disruption of intracellular redox balance and alleviated apoptosis and negative impact on osteogenic differentiation, even under oxidative stress. Autologous osteoblast-like cells with and without NAC pretreatment in a collagen sponge vehicle were implanted in critical-size defects in rat femurs. In the third week, NAC-pretreated cells yielded complete defect closure with significantly matured lamellar bone tissue in contrast with poor bone healing by cells without pretreatment. Cell-tracking analysis demonstrated direct bone deposition by transplanted cells pretreated with NAC. Pretreatment of osteoblast-like cells with NAC enhances bone regeneration in local transplantation by preventing oxidative stress-induced apoptosis and dysfunction at the transplanted site.

The purpose of this study is to confirm whether monaural auditory displays that indicate leftward and rightward directionsto users can be used together with speech sounds in order to convey positional information to users. We conducted twoexperiments; experiment 1 was for investigating how a speech sound followed by auditory displays can convey threepositions, right, center, and left, to participants, and experiment 2 was for exploring the effects of the durations of theseauditory displays on how users interpreted these pieces of positional information. As a result of experiment 1, a speechsound followed by monaural auditory displays with durations of 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 sec succeeded in conveying the threepieces of positional information to users. As a result of experiment 2, the speech sound followed by monaural auditorydisplays with durations of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 or 1.00 sec was interpreted by users correctly.

Subconcussive blast exposure has been shown to alter neurological functioning. However, the extent to which neurological dysfunction persists after blast exposure is unknown. This longitudinal study examined the potential short- and long-term effects of repeated subconcussive blast exposure on neuromotor performance from heavy weapons training in military personnel. A total of 214 participants were assessed; 137 were exposed to repeated subconcussive blasts and 77 were not exposed to blasts (controls). Participants completed a short stepping-in-place task while an Android smartphone app placed on their thigh recorded movement kinematics. We showed acute suppression of neuromotor variability 6 h after subconcussive blast exposure, followed by a rebound to levels not different from baseline at the 72 h, 2-week, and 3-month post-tests. It is postulated that this suppression of neuromotor variability results from a reduction in the functional degrees of freedom from the subconcussive neurological insult. It is important to note that this change in behavior is short-lived, with a return to pre-blast exposure movement kinematics within 72 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When one directs their attention to an intended effect (external focus of attention, EFOA), motor performance is generally better than when one directs their attention to their own body movements (internal focus of attention, IFOA). However, the effect of attentional focus is unclear when a skill is practiced through motor imagery (MI) in the absence of physical trials. Participants (N = 30, M = 22.33 yrs, SD = 2.69) in the present study completed three physical trials of a reciprocal aiming task before and (24-h) after MI practice. During MI practice, the EFOA (n = 15) and IFOA (n = 15) groups mentally practiced the task with no physical practice with EFOA-MI or IFOA-MI, respectively, for three consecutive days. Our results showed that both groups significantly improved in accuracy (F1,28 = 6.49, p =.017), supporting the benefit of MI in motor skill acquisition. However, a significant effect of attentional focus was not observed (F1.,28 = 0.445, p = 0.51). We discussed two potential explanations: EFOA/IFOA requires physical trials to affect performance, or individuals must use both EFOA and IFOA in the process of creating imagery of the environment and movements, which may obscure the effect of EFOA and IFOA. BACKGROUND: Although biomimetic apatite coating is a promising way to provide titanium with osteoconductivity, the efficiency and quality of deposition is often poor. Most titanium implants have microscale surface morphology, and an addition of nanoscale features while preserving the micromorphology may provide further biological benefit. Here, we examined the effect of ultraviolet (UV) light treatment of titanium, or photofunctionalization, on the efficacy of biomimetic apatite deposition on titanium and its biological capability. METHODS AND RESULTS: Micro-roughed titanium disks were prepared by acid-etching with sulfuric acid. Micro-roughened disks with or without photofunctionalization (20-minute exposure to UV light) were immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 1 or 5 days. Photofunctionalized titanium disks were superhydrophilic and did not form surface air bubbles when immersed in SBF, whereas non-photofunctionalized disks were hydrophobic and largely covered with air bubbles during immersion. An apatite-related signal was observed by X-ray diffraction on photofunctionalized titanium after 1 day of SBF immersion, which was equivalent to the one observed after 5 days of immersion of control titanium. Scanning electron microscopy revealed nodular apatite deposition in the valleys and at the inclines of micro-roughened structures without affecting the existing micro-configuration. Micro-roughened titanium and apatite-deposited titanium surfaces had similar roughness values. The attachment, spreading, settling, proliferation, and alkaline phosphate activity of bone marrow-derived osteoblasts were promoted on apatite-coated titanium with photofunctionalization. CONCLUSION: UV-photofunctionalization of titanium enabled faster deposition of nanoscale biomimetic apatite, resulting in the improved biological capability compared to the similarly prepared apatite-deposited titanium without photofunctionalization. Photofunctionalization-assisted biomimetic apatite deposition may be a novel method to effectively enhance micro-roughened titanium surfaces without altering their microscale morphology.
