Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a fatal zoonosis caused by ticks in East Asia. As SFTS virus (SFTSV) is maintained between wildlife and ticks, seroepidemiological studies in wildlife are important to understand the behavior of SFTSV in the environment. Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, is an SFTS-endemic area, and approximately 100 feral horses, called Misaki horses (Equus caballus), inhabit Cape Toi in Miyazaki Prefecture. While these animals are managed in a wild-like manner, their ages are ascertainable due to individual identification. In the present study, we conducted a seroepidemiological survey of SFTSV in Misaki horses between 2015 and 2023. This study aimed to understand SFTSV infection in horses and its transmission to wildlife. A total of 707 samples from 180 feral horses were used to determine the seroprevalence of SFTSV using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Neutralization testing was performed on 118 samples. In addition, SFTS viral RNA was detected in ticks from Cape Toi and feral horses. The overall seroprevalence between 2015 and 2023 was 78.5% (555/707). The lowest seroprevalence was 55% (44/80) in 2016 and the highest was 92% (76/83) in 2018. Seroprevalence was significantly affected by age, with 11% (8/71) in those less than one year of age and 96.7% (435/450) in those four years of age and older (p < 0.0001). The concordance between ELISA and neutralization test results was 88.9% (105/118). SFTS viral RNA was not detected in ticks (n = 516) or feral horses. This study demonstrated that horses can be infected with SFTSV and that age is a significant factor in seroprevalence in wildlife. The outcomes of unresectable gastric cancer (GC) are unfavorable even with chemotherapy; therefore, a new treatment modality is required. The combination of an oncolytic virus and photodynamic therapy can be one of the promising modalities to overcome this. Mammalian orthoreovirus (MRV) is an oncolytic virus that has been used in clinical trials for several cancers. In this study, we developed and evaluated a recombinant MRV strain type 3 Dearing (T3D) that expresses membrane-targeting KillerRed (KRmem), a phototoxic fluorescent protein that produces cytotoxic reactive oxygen species upon light irradiation. KRmem was fused in-frame to the 3′ end of the σ2 viral gene in the S2 segment using a 2A peptide linker, enabling the expression of multiple proteins from a single transcript. RNA electrophoresis, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence analyses confirmed functional insertion of KRmem into the recombinant virus. The growth activity of the recombinant virus was comparable to that of the wild-type MRV in a cultured cell line. The recombinant virus infected two GC cell lines (MKN45P and MKN7), and a significant cytocidal effect was observed in MKN45P cells infected with the recombinant virus after light irradiation. Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is an endovascular procedure for hemorrhage control. In REBOA, the balloon must be placed in the precise place, but it may be performed without X-ray fluoroscopy. This study aimed to estimate the REBOA zones from the body surface using deep learning for safe balloon placement. A total of 198 abdominal computed tomography (CT) datasets containing the regions of the REBOA zones were collected from open data libraries. Then, depth images of the body surface generated from the CT datasets and the images corresponding to the zones were labeled for deep learning training and validation. DeepLabV3+, a deep learning semantic segmentation model, was employed to estimate the zones. We used 176 depth images as training data and 22 images as validation data. A nine-fold cross-validation was performed to generalize the performance of the network. The median Dice coefficients for Zones 1-3 were 0.94 (inter-quarter range: 0.90–0.96), 0.77 (0.60–0.86), and 0.83 (0.74–0.89), respectively. The median displacements of the zone boundaries were 11.34 mm (5.90–19.45), 11.40 mm (4.88–20.23), and 14.17 mm (6.89–23.70) for the boundary between Zones 1 and 2, between Zones 2 and 3, and between Zone 3 and out of zone, respectively. Purpose: Clinical outcomes after decompression procedures are reportedly worse for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), especially DISH extended to the lumbar segment (L-DISH). However, no studies have compared the effect of less-invasive surgery versus conventional decompression techniques for LSS with DISH. The purpose of this study was to compare the long-term risk of reoperation after decompression surgery focusing on LSS with L-DISH. Methods: This study compared open procedure cohort (open conventional fenestration) and less-invasive procedure cohort (bilateral decompression via a unilateral approach) with ≥ 5 years of follow-up. After stratified analysis by L-DISH, patients with L-DISH were propensity score-matched by age and sex. Results: There were 57 patients with L-DISH among 489 patients in the open procedure cohort and 41 patients with L-DISH among 297 patients in the less-invasive procedure cohort. The reoperation rates in L-DISH were higher in the open than less-invasive procedure cohort for overall reoperations (25% and 7%, p = 0.026) and reoperations at index levels (18% and 5%, p = 0.059). Propensity score-matched analysis in L-DISH demonstrated that open procedures were significantly associated with increased overall reoperations (hazard ratio [HR], 6.18; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.37–27.93) and reoperations at index levels (HR, 4.80; 95% CI, 1.04–22.23); there was no difference in reoperation at other lumbar levels. Conclusions: Less-invasive procedures had a lower risk of reoperation, especially at index levels for LSS with L-DISH. A clear identification of the etiology of glomerular disease is essential in patients with diabetes. Renal biopsy is the gold standard for assessing the underlying nephrotic pathology; however, it has the risk for potential complications. Here, we aimed to investigate the feasibility of urinary fluorescence imaging using an enzyme-activatable probe for differentiating diabetic kidney disease and the other glomerular diseases. Hydroxymethyl rhodamine green (HMRG)-based fluorescent probes targeting gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and dipeptidyl-peptidase (DPP) were used. Urinary fluorescence was compared between groups which were classified by their histopathological diagnoses (diabetic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, and nephrosclerosis) as obtained by ultrasound-guided renal biopsy. Urinary fluorescence was significantly stronger in patients with diabetic kidney disease compared to those with glomerulonephritis/nephrosclerosis after DPP-HMRG, whereas it was stronger in patients with nephrosclerosis than in patients with glomerulonephritis after GGT-HMRG. Subgroup analyses of the fluorescence performed for patients with diabetes showed consistent results. Urinary fluorescence imaging using enzyme-activatable fluorescence probes thus represents a potential noninvasive assessment technique for kidney diseases in patients with diabetes. Study Design: Retrospective longitudinal cohort study.Objective: To investigate the impact of facet joint opening (FJO) on clinical outcomes after minimally invasive decompression surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis.Summary Of Background Data: Although FJOs have previously been identified as indicators of segmental spinal instability, their impact on clinical outcomes after decompression alone surgery has yet to be investigated.Methods: This study included 296 patients from a single institution who underwent minimally invasive surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis and were followed up for ≥5 years. Our analysis focused on identifying FJOs at the index decompression level (d-FJO) and at multiple levels (m-FJO) (i.e., ≥3 levels within the lumbar segment) using preoperative computed tomography. Clinical outcomes including reoperations, improvement ratio for Japanese Orthopaedic Association score, and achievement of a minimal clinically important difference in visual analogue scale scores for low back pain or leg pain at 5 years were compared between patients with and without d-FJO or m-FJO.Results: There were 129 (44%) and 62 (21%) patients with d-FJO (more common with lateral olisthesis) and m-FJO (less common with spondylolisthesis), respectively. Reoperations were more common in patients with d-FJO than in those without (16% vs. 5%). On Cox proportional hazards analysis, d-FJO was identified as a predictor for revision at the index decompression level (hazard ratio 4.04, P = 0.03), whereas m-FJO was a predictor for revision at other lumbar levels (hazard ratio 3.71, P = 0.03). Patients with m-FJO had slightly lower rates of achieving minimal clinically important difference in visual analogue scale scores for low back pain (34% vs. 52%, P = 0.03) and poorer improvement ratio for Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores (74% vs. 80%, P = 0.03) than those without.Conclusion: FJO at both index decompression level and multiple level were predictors of poor outcomes; patients with FJOs require careful surgical planning or special follow-up.Level of Evidence: 3. Introduction: Although lumbar lesions such as spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, and vertebral fracture are not specific to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the prevalence is high in RA patients. However, no longitudinal study has evaluated lumbar lesions in RA. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of and risk factors for lumbar lesions in RA by a prospective longitudinal cohort study. Materials and methods: The study cohort comprised 110 patients with RA from the 'analysis of factors for RA spinal disorders (AFFORD)' study who completed the secondary survey at a single orthopaedic outpatient RA clinic. Radiological examination included standing radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar spine. New development of spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, and vertebral fracture were assessed between baseline and secondary survey. Results: The incidences of spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, and vertebral fracture were 42%, 16%, and 12%, respectively, during a mean follow-up of 7 years. The independent risk factor for de novo scoliosis was poor control of RA (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 4.81, p = 0.011), while the independent risk factors for new vertebral fracture was use of glucocorticoid at secondary survey (aOR 14.87, p = 0.012). Patients with de novo scoliosis exhibited more severe low back pain and lower quality of life than those without. Conclusion: The incidence of scoliosis was related in patients with poor control of RA, while new vertebral fracture was more common in patients with use of glucocorticoid. Multiple cranial neuropathies in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) are rare. We present a patient with a 4‐year history of right peripheral facial nerve palsy, who presented with right mandibular, glossopharyngeal, and vagus nerve impairments. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed enlargement and contrast enhancement of each cranial nerve and atrophy and abnormal contrast enhancement of the right parotid gland. A parotid gland biopsy led to the diagnosis of ACC. In this case, brain MRI enabled evaluation of the tumor progression pathway invading the cranial nerves. Its results suggested that tumor cells can travel through the cranial nerve anastomotic network, shedding light on the development pattern of tumor cells. Purpose: Residual symptoms indicating incomplete remission of lower leg numbness or low back pain may occur after spine surgery. The purpose was to elucidate the pattern of residual symptoms 5 years after minimally invasive lumbar decompression surgery using a cluster analysis.Methods: The study comprised 193 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) (108 men, 85 women) ranging in age from 40 to 86 years (mean, 67.9 years). Each patient underwent 5-year follow-up. The Japanese Orthopedic Association score and visual analog scale scores for low back pain, leg pain, and leg numbness at 5 years were entered into the cluster analysis to characterize postoperative residual symptoms. Other clinical data were analyzed to detect the factors significantly related to each cluster.Results: The analysis yielded four clusters representing different patterns of residual symptoms. Patients in cluster 1 (57.0%) were substantially improved and had few residual symptoms of LSS. Patients in cluster 2 (11.4%) were poorly improved and had major residual symptoms. Patients in cluster 3 (17.6%) were greatly improved but had mild residual low back pain. Patients in cluster 4 (14.0%) were improved but had severe residual leg numbness. Prognostic factors of cluster 2 were a short maximum walking distance, motor weakness, resting lower leg numbness, cofounding scoliosis, and high sagittal vertical axis.Conclusions: This is the first study to identify specific patterns of residual symptoms of LSS after decompression surgery. The patient presented with tandem lesions for which mechanical thrombectomy was performed. Retrieval of massive white clots and endothelial tissue by forceful manual aspiration via a balloon guiding catheter after angioplasty can be indicative of augmentation of vessel wall injury. Estrogen has been shown to affect differentiation and proliferation as a mitogen in various neural systems. Olfactory receptor cells are unique within the nervous system, and have the ability to regenerate even after an individual has reached maturity. Olfactory receptor cells also regenerate after experimentally induced degeneration. The purpose of this study is to observe the influence of estrogen depletion induced by ovariectomy on olfactory nerve regeneration. Female mice underwent bilateral ovariectomy at 8 weeks of age and received intraperitoneal administration of methimazole 1 week later. At 2, 4, and 6 weeks after methimazole administration, the olfactory mucosa was analyzed histochemically to determine olfactory epithelium (OE) thickness, olfactory marker protein distribution, and Ki-67 immunoreactivity. Furthermore, 2 weeks after ovariectomy, trkA protein distribution in the OE and nerve growth factor (NGF) levels in the olfactory bulb were determined by immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. Our results showed that in ovariectomized mice OMP, Ki-67, and trkA-immunopositive cells expression decreased at 2 weeks after methimazole injection, a time point at which regeneration is underway. At this same time point, although NGF production in the olfactory bulb had increased before methimazole administration, no differences were observed between the ovx and control groups. These results suggest that estrogen depletion induces a suppressive effect on regeneration of olfactory neurons, and that estrogen may have a potential use in the treatment of sensorineural olfactory dysfunction. Factors related to the onset and progression of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) have not yet been identified. Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) increases mechanical loading on the non-fused lumbar levels and may therefore lead to LSS. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify associations between LSS and DISH. This study included 2363 consecutive patients undergoing surgery for LSS and 787 general inhabitants without symptoms of LSS as participants of the population-based cohort study, Research on Osteoarthritis/Osteoporosis Against Disability. Standing whole-spine radiographs were used to diagnose DISH based on the criteria proposed by Resnick and Niwayama. The prevalence of DISH showed a significant step-wise increase among asymptomatic inhabitants without radiographic LSS, asymptomatic inhabitants with radiographic LSS, and patients with LSS requiring surgery (14.4, 21.1, and 31.7%, respectively; p < 0.001). The distribution of DISH was similar between the groups, but the lower thoracic and upper-middle lumbar spine regions were more frequently involved in patients with LSS requiring surgery. Multivariate analysis indicated that DISH was an independent associated factor for LSS requiring surgery (adjusted odds ratio 1.65; 95% confidence interval 1.32-2.07) after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, and diabetes mellitus. Among patients with LSS requiring surgery, a higher occurrence of stenosis at the upper lumbar levels and multi-level stenosis were observed in patients with DISH requiring surgery than in patients without DISH. An improved paper-based analytical device (PAD) using color screening to enhance device performance is described. Current detection methods for PADs relying on the distance-based signalling motif can be slow due to the assay time being limited by capillary flow rates that wick fluid through the detection zone. For traditional distance-based detection motifs, analysis can take up to 45 min for a channel length of 5 cm. By using a color screening method, quantification with a distance-based PAD can be achieved in minutes through a “dip-and-read” approach. A colorimetric indicator line deposited onto a paper substrate using inkjet-printing undergoes a concentration-dependent colorimetric response for a given analyte. This color intensity-based response has been converted to a distance-based signal by overlaying a color filter with a continuous color intensity gradient matching the color of the developed indicator line. As a proof-of-concept, Ni quantification in welding fume was performed as a model assay. The results of multiple independent user testing gave mean absolute percentage error and average relative standard deviations of 10.5% and 11.2% respectively, which were an improvement over analysis based on simple visual color comparison with a read guide (12.2%, 14.9%). In addition to the analytical performance comparison, an interference study and a shelf life investigation were performed to further demonstrate practical utility. This paper presents the determination of complex binding stoichiometry for colorimetric metal indicators according to the Job plot method by means of an office inkjet printer in combination with digital colour analysis. In contrast to the conventional solution-based analysis involving manual preparation of many mixed solutions, the elaborated inkjet-based approach allows convenient automated mixing of metal salt and indicator solutions in various ratios on a paper substrate. Inkjet-deposited liquid volumes and mixing ratios were controlled by simple colour value setting on a PC. For this purpose, a custom printing colour profile has been elaborated to achieve a linear relationship between the software set CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key plate (Black)) colour values and the amount of deposited ink. The inkjet-based Job plot analysis was validated against the solution-based conventional approach for binding stoichiometry determination of five known metal ion–indicator systems. Simple colour scanning and colour analysis of printed spots on filter paper gave accurate results for five different stoichiometries and colorimetric response patterns. This inkjet printing approach using a customized printing colour profile allows rapid, flexible and precise deposition and mixing of reagent solutions, and thus, is expected to be useful for wide application purposes, which require the controlled deposition of reagents on a substrate. The transport efficiency during capillary flow-driven sample transport on microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) made from filter paper has been investigated for a selection of model analytes (Ni2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, PO43−, bovine serum albumin, sulforhodamine B, amaranth) representing metal cations, complex anions, proteins and anionic molecules. For the first time, the transport of the analytical target compounds rather than the sample liquid, has been quantitatively evaluated by means of colorimetry and absorption spectrometry-based methods. The experiments have revealed that small paperfluidic channel dimensions, additional user operation steps (e.g. control of sample volume, sample dilution, washing step) as well as the introduction of sample liquid wicking areas allow to increase analyte transport efficiency. It is also shown that the interaction of analytes with the negatively charged cellulosic paper substrate surface is strongly influenced by the physico-chemical properties of the model analyte and can in some cases (Cu2+) result in nearly complete analyte depletion during sample transport. Background Context: No previous studies have reported the radiological features of patients requiring surgery in symptomatic lumbar foraminal stenosis (LFS).Purpose: This study aims to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of a novel technique, foraminal stenotic ratio (FSR), using three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging for LFS at L5-S by comparing patients requiring surgery, patients with successful conservative treatment, and asymptomatic patients.Study Design: This is a retrospective radiological comparative study.Patient Sample: We assessed the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results of 84 patients (168 L5-S foramina) aged ≥40 years without L4-L5 lumbar spinal stenosis. The foramina were divided into three groups following standardized treatment: stenosis requiring surgery (20 foramina), stenosis with successful conservative treatment (26 foramina), and asymptomatic stenotic foramen (122 foramina).Outcome Measures: Foraminal stenotic ratio was defined as the ratio of the length of the stenosis to the length of the foramen on the reconstructed oblique coronal image, referring to perineural fat obliterations in whole oblique sagittal images. We also evaluated the foraminal nerve angle and the minimum nerve diameter on reconstructed images, and the Lee classification on conventional T1 images.Materials and Methods: The differences in each MRI parameter between the groups were investigated. To predict which patients require surgery, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted after calculating the area under the ROC curve.Results: The FSR showed a stepwise increase when comparing asymptomatic, conservative, and surgical groups (mean, 8.6%, 38.5%, 54.9%, respectively). Only FSR was significantly different between the surgical and conservative groups (p=.002), whereas all parameters were significantly different comparing the symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. The ROC curve showed that the area under the curve for FSR was 0.742, and the optimal cutoff value for FSR for predicting a surgical requirement in symptomatic patients was 50% (sensitivity, 75%; specificity, 80.7%).Conclusions: The FSR determined LFS requiring surgery among symptomatic patients, with moderate accuracy. Implementing machine learning techniques, such as decision trees, known as prediction models that use logical construction diagrams, are rarely used to predict clinical outcomes. To develop a clinical prediction rule to predict clinical outcomes in patients who undergo minimally invasive lumbar decompression surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis with and without coexisting spondylolisthesis and scoliosis using a decision tree model. A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data. This study included 331 patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis and were followed up for ≥2 years at 1 institution. Self-report measures: The Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scores and low back pain (LBP)/leg pain/leg numbness visual analog scale (VAS) scores. Physiologic measures: Standing sagittal spinopelvic alignment, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging results. Low achievement in clinical outcomes were defined as the postoperative JOA score at the 2-year follow-up <25 points. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analysis and chi-square automatic interaction detection (CHAID) were used for analysis. The CHAID model for JOA score <25 points showed spontaneous numbness/pain as the first decision node. For the presence of spontaneous numbness/pain, sagittal vertical axis ≥70 mm was selected as the second decision node. Then lateral wedging, ≥6° and pelvic incidence minus lumbar lordosis (PI-LL) ≥30° followed as the third decision node. For the absence of spontaneous numbness/pain, sex and lateral olisthesis, ≥3mm and American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification system score were selected as the second and third decision nodes. The sensitivity, specificity, and the positive predictive value of this CHAID model was 65.1, 69.8, and 64.7% respectively. With “drop-slip” (DS) bulk liquid flow on a fully inkjet-printed microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD), a new method for the rapid transport of sample liquid is presented. The main driving force for DS flow is the slip flow of fluid on wetted porous cellulose acting as a lubricated surface, which is predominantly influenced by the width of the hydrophilic channel and the surface tension of the sample liquid. The application of DS flow is demonstrated by a model colorimetric metal assay (Zn 2+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ ) with inkjet-deposited indicators on a μPAD with optimized channel dimensions of 2 mm width and 110 μm height. The presence of bulk liquid on the entire device does not result in any mixing of assay components across adjacent sensing regions connected by microfluidic channels. DS flow is a useful alternative sample liquid transport method for μPADs, allowing to perform multiple fully independent assays with enlarged sample volumes without requiring any significant variation in device design and fabrication. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have emerged as a promising diagnostic platform a decade ago. In contrast to highly active academic developments, their entry into real-life applications is still very limited. This discrepancy is attributed to the gap between research developments and their practical utility, particularly in the aspects of operational simplicity, long-term stability of devices, and associated equipment. On the basis of these backgrounds, this review attempts to: 1) identify the reasons for success of paper-based devices already in the market, 2) describe the current status and remaining issues of μPADs in terms of operational complexity, signal interpretation approaches, and storage stability, and 3) discuss the possibility of mass production based on established manufacturing technologies. Finally, the state-of-the-art in commercialisation of μPADs is discussed, and the “upgrades” required from a laboratory-based prototype to an end user device are demonstrated on a specific example. Condition dependence of birdsong has been well examined from the viewpoint of the developmental stress hypothesis, which posits that complex songs assure fitness because learned acoustic features of songs are especially susceptible to early-life stress that young birds experience in song learning periods. The effect of early stress on song phenotypes should be crucial, especially in age-limited song learners which sing stereotyped songs throughout life. However, little attention has been paid to non-learned song features that can change plastically even in adulthood of age-limited song-learners. Although it has been shown that food availability affects song rate in wild songbirds, there is limited evidence of the link between favorable nutritional conditions and song phenotypes other than song rate. Under the prediction that singing behavior reflects an individual's recent life history, we kept adult Bengalese finch males under high-nutrition or normal diet for a short term, and examined changes in body mass and songs. We found that birds on a high-nutrition diet showed higher song output (e.g. song rate and length) compared with those of the control group, while changes in body mass were moderate. In addition, note repertoire became more consistent and temporal structures got faster in both nutrition and control groups, which indicates that songs were subject to other factors than nutrition. Considering that female estrildid finches, including Bengalese and zebra finches, show a preference toward complex songs as well as longer songs and higher song rate, it is plausible that different aspects of singing behavior signal different male qualities, and provide multifaceted clues to females that choose mates. Sub-passaging of QS-05, a street rabies virus (RABV) isolate, in non-neuronal cells resulted in a virus with higher pathogenicity, QS-BHK-P7. Four full-length cDNA plasmids were constructed and the corresponding recombinant viruses were recovered: rQS-05, rQS-BHK-P7 and rQS05-2475G/rQS-BHK-P7-2475A (made by switching of intergenic P-M between these two backbones). rQS-BHK-P7-2475 A virus had eight instead of seven adenosines in its poly(A) sequence. Interestingly, mutant viruses with 6 or 8 adenosines infected more neuroblastoma cells than their parental ones. Mice that were infected intracerebrally and intramuscularly with rQS05-2475G and rQS-BHK-P7 exhibited highest mortality. However, mice infected with rQS-BHK-P7-2475AA had the shortest survival time. This study aimed at examining the distribution of glucose transporter 5 (GLUT5), which preferentially transports fructose, in the rat brain by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Small immunoreactive puncta (less than 0.7 μm) were sparsely distributed all over the brain, some of which appeared to be associated with microglial processes detected by an anti-ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1) monoclonal antibody. In addition, some of these immunoreactive puncta seemed to be associated with tanycyte processes that were labeled with anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) monoclonal antibody. Ependymal cells were also found to be immunopositive for GLUT5. Furthermore, several noticeable GLUT5 immunoreactive profiles were observed. GLUT5 immunoreactive neurons, confirmed by double staining with neuronal nuclei (NeuN), were seen in the entopeduncular nucleus and lateral hypothalamus. Cerebellar Purkinje cells were immunopositve for GLUT5. Dense accumulation of immunoreactive puncta, some of which were neuronal elements (confirmed by immunoelectron microscopy), were observed in the optic tract and their terminal fields, namely, superior colliculus, pretectum, nucleus of the optic tract, and medial terminal nucleus of the optic tract. In addition to the associated areas of the visual system, the vestibular and cochlear nuclei also contained dense GLUT5 immunoreactive puncta. Western blot analysis of the cerebellum indicated that the antibody used recognized the 33.5 and 37.0 kDa bands that were also contained in jejunum and kidney extracts. Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) is a useful method for removing invasive tumor tissues. For this, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probes are suitable for visualizing cancer cells due to their low autofluorescence, and an oncolytic mammalian orthoreovirus (MRV) expressing an NIR fluorescent protein is expected to be a novel tool for FGS. In this study, we identified the optimal insertion site of the NIR fluorescent protein gene iRFP720 (915 nt) in the MRV genome. We constructed genome plasmids for the L1, M1, and S2 segments, where a gene cassette comprising iRFP720 and T2A self-cleaving peptide was inserted in the 5′ or 3′ region of each segment. Through virus recovery, the recombinant MRV with the gene cassette at the M1 segment's 3′ end, T3D-L(M1/3′iRFP720), was capable of replication and passaging with bright NIR fluorescence. However, the replication of T3D-L(M1/3′iRFP720) was approximately 1,000-fold lower than that of the wild-type virus. T3D-L(M1/3′iRFP720) production improved due to the transfection of a fusion-associated small transmembrane protein gene of fusogenic reovirus. Further, fluorescence signals were detected in T3D-L(M1/3′iRFP720)-infected human gastric and pancreatic cancer cells. Man‐in‐the‐barrel syndrome (MIBS) is characterized by weakness in the bilateral upper‐extremity muscles with relatively preserved strength in the face and lower‐extremity muscles. We present a case of MIBS‐like symptoms due to spinal cord infarction caused by transient hypoperfusion in the left ascending cervical artery (ACA) secondary to Stanford type A acute aortic dissection. Rabies is a fatal encephalitis caused by rabies virus (RABV), and no antiviral drugs for RABV are currently available. We report for the first time the efficacy of favipiravir (T-705) against RABV in vitro and in vivo. T-705 produced a significant, 3-4 log10 reduction in the multiplication of street and fixed RABV strains in mouse neuroblastoma Neuro-2a cells, with half-maximal inhibitory concentrations of 32.4 µM and 44.3 µM, respectively. T-705 significantly improved morbidity and mortality among RABV-infected mice when orally administered at a dose of 300 mg/kg/day for 7 days, beginning 1 hour after inoculation. T-705 significantly reduced the rate of virus positivity in the brain. Furthermore, the effectiveness of T-705 was comparable to that of equine rabies virus immunoglobulin for postexposure prophylaxis. Aims/Introduction To assess the effects of sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor therapy on the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods We administered ipragliflozin to 21 inpatients with type 2 diabetes for 7 days, and analyzed the diurnal profiles of plasma glucose and 3-hydroxybutyrate. A total of 21 age-, sex- and body mass index-matched diabetic patients served as controls. Results Continuous glucose monitoring showed that the 24-h glucose curve was shifted downward without hypoglycemia by the administration of ipragliflozin. The average glucose level was reduced from 182 ± 54 mg/ dL to 141 ± 33 mg/ dL ( P < 0.0001). The magnitude of the reduction was highly correlated with the baseline average glucose level. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance was decreased, and homeostasis model assessment of β-cell function was increased during the treatment. Urinary glucose excretion was correlated with the average glucose level both on day 0 and on day 7, although the regression line was steeper and shifted leftward on day 7. The ipragliflozin-treated patients lost more weight than the control patients (1.4 ± 0.5 vs 0.5 ± 0.6 kg, P < 0.0001). Plasma levels of 3-hydroxybutyrate were significantly increased with peaks before breakfast and before dinner. Patient age and bodyweight loss were negatively and positively correlated with the peak levels of 3-hydroxybutyrate on day 7, respectively. Conclusions The ipragliflozin treatment improved the 24-h glucose curve without causing hypoglycemia. The close correlation between the magnitude of glucose reduction and the baseline plasma glucose concentration suggests that the risk of hypoglycemia is likely low. We describe the case of a 15-year-old boy with a history of Fontan operation and multiple intrahepatic tumors. Computed tomography showed multiple hepatic nodules with arterial enhancement. Because hepatocellular carcinoma ( HCC) was not detected on biopsies and tumor markers were normal, progress was monitored on imaging. One hepatic tumor increased greatly in size during follow up. At 15 years of age, tumor markers rose rapidly, and he had upper abdominal swelling. Therefore, transarterial embolization ( TAE) was performed for the largest tumor, suspected to be a HCC due to cardiac cirrhosis. This tumor had not increased at follow up 4 months later. The patient died from hepatic failure at the age of 17 years, and HCC was diagnosed at autopsy. Although pediatric HCC is rare, its incidence is likely to increase. TAE, with or without anticancer agents, is a therapeutic option for unresectable pediatric HCC, as it is for adult HCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the effects of chewing under immobilization stress on the periaqueductal gray (PAG) matter using phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK) as a marker of responding cells. Immobilization stress increased pERK-immunoreactive cells in the PAG. Among four subdivisions of the PAG, the increase of immunoreactive cells was remarkable in the dorsolateral and ventrolateral subdivisions. However, increase of pERK-immunoreactive cells by the immobilization stress was not so evident in the dorsomedial and lateral subdivisions. The chewing under immobilization stress prevented the stress-induced increase of pERK-immunoreactive cells in the dorsolateral and ventrolateral subdivisions with statistical significances ( p < 0.05). Again, chewing effects on pERK-immunoreactive cells were not visible in the dorsomedial and lateral subdivisions. Brain activity patterns differ from person to person, even for an identical stimulus. In functional brain mapping studies, it is important to align brain activity patterns between subjects for group statistical analyses. While anatomical templates are widely used for inter-subject alignment in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies, they are not sufficient to identify the mapping between voxel-level functional responses representing specific mental contents. Recent work has suggested that statistical learning methods could be used to transform individual brain activity patterns into a common space while preserving representational contents. Here, we propose a flexible method for functional alignment, “neural code converter,” which converts one subject's brain activity pattern into another's representing the same content. The neural code converter was designed to learn statistical relationships between fMRI activity patterns of paired subjects obtained while they saw an identical series of stimuli. It predicts the signal intensity of individual voxels of one subject from a pattern of multiple voxels of the other subject. To test this method, we used fMRI activity patterns measured while subjects observed visual images consisting of random and structured patches. We show that fMRI activity patterns for visual images not used for training the converter could be predicted from those of another subject where brain activity was recorded for the same stimuli. This confirms that visual images can be accurately reconstructed from the predicted activity patterns alone. Furthermore, we show that a classifier trained only on predicted fMRI activity patterns could accurately classify measured fMRI activity patterns. These results demonstrate that the neural code converter can translate neural codes between subjects while preserving contents related to visual images. While this method is useful for functional alignment and decoding, it may also provide a basis for brain-to-brain communication using the converted pattern for designing brain stimulation. Rapid, precise, and reproducible deposition of a broad variety of functional materials, including analytical assay reagents and biomolecules, has made inkjet printing an effective tool for the fabrication of microanalytical devices. A ubiquitous office device as simple as a standard desktop printer with its multiple ink cartridges can be used for this purpose. This Review discusses the combination of inkjet printing technology with paper as a printing substrate for the fabrication of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), which have developed into a fast-growing new field in analytical chemistry. After introducing the fundamentals of μPADs and inkjet printing, it touches on topics such as the microfluidic patterning of paper, tailored arrangement of materials, and functionalities achievable exclusively by the inkjet deposition of analytical assay components, before concluding with an outlook on future perspectives. Objective. To investigate the prevalence and associated factors of severe low back pain (LBP) among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods. This cross-sectional study included 201 patients with RA without prior spinal surgery. Severe LBP was defined as that with a visual analog scale (VAS) score of ≥ 50 mm within the previous 4 weeks. Lumbar lesions, sagittal alignment, and disc degeneration were evaluated by plain standing X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging. Associated factors of severe LBP were evaluated using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results. Forty-eight patients (23.8%) had LBP with a VAS score of ≥ 50 mm. Multivariate analysis indicated that the associated factors for severe LBP were female, smoking, and moderate and high disease activity on the Disease Activity Score in 28 joints-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR). There was no relationship between severe LBP and any radiological findings. Among DAS28-ESR subscores, patients with severe LBP had significantly higher tender joint counts and VAS scores for general health. Conclusions. The prevalence of severe LBP was relatively high in patients with RA. The factor most closely associated with severe LBP was Disease Activity Score, but not radiological findings. Purpose: The effect of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) on spinopelvic alignment in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between DISH and sagittal spinopelvic alignment in patients undergoing surgery for LSS. Methods: A total of 132 patients aged >40 years who required surgical procedures for LSS were investigated. DISH was defined by Resnick's and Mata's criteria on preoperative standing whole-spine radiographs. We investigated the prevalence and localization of DISH and its relation to preoperative clinical symptoms. Spinopelvic alignment was measured by the sagittal C7 plumb line, lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and pelvic parameters. The association between DISH and spinopelvic alignment was analyzed using covariance adjustment for age, sex, spondylolisthesis, and degenerative lumbar scoliosis. Results: The prevalence of DISH was 39.4 % and increased with age. Preoperative symptoms showed no differences, regardless of the presence of DISH. Lumbar and thoracic alignment showed kyphotic change in patients with DISH. Patients with DISH with lower fused vertebral ends at the lumbar level (46 % of DISH) still showed significantly decreased lumbar lordosis ( p = 0.014) and decreased sacral slope ( p = 0.001) after adjusting for age, sex, spondylolisthesis, and degenerative lumbar scoliosis. Conclusions: The prevalence of DISH in patients with LSS was relatively high. Spinopelvic alignment is affected by the presence of DISH, especially in patients with lower fused vertebral ends at the lumbar lesion. An inkjet-printed microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) for the detection of lactoferrin has been developed. The analyte concentration dependent fluorescence emission, caused by the sensitization of pre-deposited terbium (Tb3+) upon complexation with lactoferrin on the paper device, is captured using a digital camera. The dynamic response range (0.5–3 mg mL−1) and the limit of detection (0.30 mg mL−1) of the μPAD are suitable for the analysis of normal human tears and the detection of eye disorders. Finally, lactoferrin concentrations in human tear samples were analyzed by the μPADs and the assay results corresponded within 6% error to those obtained by an immunoassay (ELISA). The μPADs provide a simple, rapid and accurate method for lactoferrin detection in tear fluid. Results are obtained within 15 min of a single application of 2.5 μL of sample. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a device for lactoferrin quantification relying neither on an immunoassay nor on high cost analytical instrumentation. Most street rabies virus glycoproteins (G proteins) possess two N-glycosylation sites, at Asn and Asn, whereas an additional N-glycosylation site is present in several fixed (laboratory-adapted) rabies virus strains at Asn, which suggests that the N-glycosylation addition may be a marker of fixed viruses. In this study, we successfully cloned two street virus strain 1088 variants, N5B#15 and N5B#10-28, in which the G proteins had an additional N-glycan at position 247, and we examined whether these variants were characterized by cell culture adaptation and attenuation after intramuscular inoculation as fixed viruses. N5B#15 had four mutations, i.e., S148P and D247N in the G protein, and T137A and N2046S in the large (L) protein. N5B#10-28 had an additional mutation in the G protein, R196I. Compared with the parental 1088 virus, both variants exhibited highly efficient replication in mouse neuroblastoma-derived NA cells and reduced pathogenicity in adult mice when inoculated intramuscularly, but not intracerebrally. Abstract: Using the principle of immunochromatography, we previously developed a method called RAPINA (Rapid Neutralizing Antibody detection test) that can measure the level of rabies virus -neutralizing antibody (VNA) in serum samples [Shiota S, Mannen K, Matsumoto T, Yamada K, Yasui T, Takayama K, et al. Development and evaluation of a rapid neutralizing antibody test for rabies. J Virol Methods 2009;161:58–62]. RAPINA is faster, simpler, and easier to perform compared with a virus-neutralizing test or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The improved version of RAPINA has greater positive and negative predictive values corresponding to a VNA level of 0.5IU/mL, as recommended by the World Health Organization and the World Organization for Animal Health. To verify the efficacy of this improved method, serum samples were collected from humans and dogs before and after immunization against rabies and were tested in Japan, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The results were compared between RAPINA and the true VNA levels measured by the Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test (RFFIT). The improved RAPINA accurately predicted seropositivity for 182 of 183 seropositive human samples as assessed by RFFIT (99.5%) and for 138 of 140 RFFIT-negative human samples (98.6%). In dog serum samples, the positive and negative predictive values were 99.7% (345/355) and 95.6% (174/182), respectively. RAPINA was also used to estimate VNA levels in a semiquantitative manner by using serial dilution of serum samples. Our results show that RAPINA is an easy and rapid method for measuring VNA levels before and after immunization with the rabies vaccine and does not need a high skill level or sophisticated equipment. RAPINA can be used to monitor the success of preexposure prophylaxis in at-risk persons, vaccine coverage, and animal control. Abstract: Street rabies viruses are field isolates known to be highly neurotropic. However, the viral elements related to their pathogenicity have yet to be identified at the nucleotide or amino acid level. Here, through 30 passages in mouse neuroblastoma NA cells, we have established an attenuated variant of street rabies virus strain 1088, originating from a rabid woodchuck followed by 2 passages in the brains of suckling mice. The variant, 1088-N30, was well adapted to NA cells and highly attenuated in adult mice after intramuscular (i.m.) but not intracerebral (i.c.) inoculations. 1088-N30 had seven nucleotide substitutions, and the R196S mutation of the G protein led to an additional N-glycosylation. Street viruses usually possess one or two N-glycosylation sites on the G protein, 1088 has two, while an additional N-glycosylation site is observed in laboratory-adapted strains. We also established a cloned variant 1088-N4#14 by limiting dilution. Apart from the R196S mutation, 1088-N4#14 possessed only one amino acid substitution in the P protein, which is found in several field isolates. 1088-N4#14 also efficiently replicated in NA cells and was attenuated in adult mice after i.m. inoculations, although it was more pathogenic than 1088-N30. The spread of 1088-N30 in the brain was highly restricted after i.m. inoculations, although the pattern of 1088-N4#14''s spread was intermediate between that of the parental 1088 and 1088-N30. Meanwhile, both variants strongly induced humoral immune responses in mice compared to 1088. Our results indicate that the additional N-glycosylation is likely related to the reduced pathogenicity. We performed microscopic lumbar foraminotomy in all the patients diagnosed with degenerative lumbar foraminal stenosis (DLFS) and retrospectively reviewed the clinical outcomes and the factors influencing them. The preoperative Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score of 13.8 significantly improved to 21.9 postoperatively. Although leg pain reduced in 44 patients (95.7%) immediately after surgery, it recurred in 9 patients (19.6%). The recurrence frequency was significantly higher and the JOA score improvement ratios significantly lower in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) than in those without DLS. Even among patients with DLS, those with <3° Cobb angle difference between the supine and standing positions showed satisfactory results, with no recurrence. In conclusion, microscopic lumbar foraminotomy for DLFS produced satisfactory clinical outcomes even in patients with DLS. However, the outcomes were poor in patients with unstable DLS. Abstract: In this paper, fatigue tests have been conducted on specimens, which are flat plate with a notch, stud-welded plate, T-shaped fillet welded joint and cruciform fillet welded joint, in such a way that fatigue cracks could be initiated and propagated in bending load. Under bending load, surface crack has formed flat semi-ellipse and propagated to about 80% of plate thickness before failure. Besides, the fatigue crack propagation life of cracked welded joint specimen has been predicted using fracture mechanics method. In particular, a correction factor equation has been developed for covering linearly varying stress distribution along crack propagation path under bending load. Using RNA preparations extracted from PLC/PRF/5 cells transfected with infectious genotype 3 hepatitis E virus (HEV) cDNA clones or inoculated with a fecal suspension containing a genotype 4 HEV, the 5′-terminal sequence of a 2.2-kb subgenomic RNA of genotype 3 and 4 HEVs was determined. Despite an insertion of T after nucleotide 5116 or an ORF3-null mutation in genotype 4 HEV and/or one of the genotype 3 variants, it was found that the subgenomic RNA of genotype 3 and 4 HEVs initiates exclusively at nucleotide 5122 with the common sequence of 5′-GC, which is identical to that of the prototype genotype 1 HEV. Abstract: Drebrin (developmentally regulated brain protein)-like immunoreactivity was investigated in the adult rat mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN) using light and electron microscope. Intense immunoreactive puncta were observed on the cytoplasmic membrane and within the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm was also faintly immunopositive for drebrin, and thus MTN somata other than multipolar cells were distinguishable from non-MTN somata. These immunoreactive cell bodies were localized from the level of the superior colliculus to the pons. Electron microscopic observation showed that the post-synaptic cytoplasmic membrane at axo-somatic synapses was immunoreactive for drebrin. Drebrin-like immunoreactivity was also observed on spine-like processes emanating from MTN somata. In addition, the post-synaptic cytoplasmic membrane at axo-somatic synapses was also immunopositive for drebrin. Within the cytoplasm of MTN cell bodies, a part of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and neighboring structures were also immunopositive. Further, both ends of the somato-somatic close appositions that contained neuronal gap junctions harbored immunoreactive structures. We can infer from the results that drebrin is an ideal marker protein for MTN cell bodies. The abundance of drebrin-like immunoreactivity in the MTN neurons suggests that the MTN has highly flexible synaptogenesis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Hydroxytyrosol (HT), a small-molecule phenolic compound, inactivated influenza A viruses including H1N1, H3N2, H5N1, and H9N2 subtypes. HT also inactivated Newcastle disease virus but not bovine rotavirus, and fowl adenovirus, suggesting that the mechanism of the antiviral effect of HT might require the presence of a viral envelope. Pretreatment of MDCK cells with HT did not affect the propagation of H9N2 virus subsequently inoculated onto the cells, implying that HT targets the virus but not the host cell. H9N2 virus inactivated with HT retained unaltered hemagglutinating activity and bound to MDCK cells in a manner similar to untreated virus. Neuraminidase activity in the HT-treated virus also remained unchanged. However, in the cells inoculated with HT-inactivated H9N2 virus, neither viral mRNA nor viral protein was detected. Electron microscopic analysis revealed morphological abnormalities in the HT-treated H9N2 virus. Most structures found in the HT-treated virus were atypical of influenza virions, and localization of hemagglutinin was not necessarily confined on the virion surface. Ten murine monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against a synthetic peptide corresponding to the well-conserved, C-terminal 24-amino acid portion of ORF3 protein of hepatitis E virus (HEV) were produced and characterized. Immunofluorescent assays using the anti-ORF3 MAbs revealed accumulation of ORF3 protein in the cytoplasm of PLC/PRF/5 cells transfected with ORF3-expressing plasmid or inoculated with cell-culture-generated HEV. The anti-ORF3 MAbs could capture HEV particles in culture medium and serum at variable efficiency of up to 61 and 49%, respectively, but not those in feces. By sandwiching between immobilized and enzyme-labeled anti-ORF3 MAbs in ELISA, ORF3 antigen was detected in the culture media with an HEV RNA titer of >106 copies/ml and increased in parallel with the increase in HEV load. HEV progenies in the culture supernatant, with ORF3 protein on the surface, banded at a low buoyant density of 1.15 g/cm3 in sucrose. A representative anti-ORF3 MAb (TA0536) could partially neutralize the infection of cell-culture-generated HEV in a cell culture system. These results indicate that ORF3 protein, at least its C-terminal portion, is present on the surface of HEV virions released from infected cells and support a previously proposed assumption that ORF3 protein is associated with virus release from infected cells. Abstract: The transverse distribution of wheel loads in orthotropic decks generates significant out-of-plane bending moments in the deck plate and rib wall at the rib-to-deck joint. Due to the relatively small thickness of both the deck plate and rib wall, the out-of-plane bending moments result in high local flexural stresses causing fatigue cracks to develop at the joint. In this study, the transverse stresses within the joint region that arise under the action of wheel loads are investigated with finite element analyses. Based on the stress results and the basic theories of linear elastic fracture mechanics, the design fatigue strength is determined for the joint. Factors affecting the stress range are also studied. The analyses show that the surface stresses in the deck plate are much larger than those in the rib wall in the case of 75% weld penetration into the rib wall, indicating that the fatigue strength of the joint is governed by the fatigue cracks propagating into the thickness of deck plate. It is also shown with finite element analyses that increasing the distribution area of wheel load or the thickness of deck plate can reduce the stress range of the deck plate and increase significantly the fatigue life of the joint. Abstract: Hippocampal cholinergic neurostimulating peptide (HCNP), originally isolated from soluble fraction of young rat hippocampus and released from hippocampus by the stimulation of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, enhances the cholinergic phenotype development in vitro. HCNP precursor protein (HCNP-pp) has multiple functions, not only acting as the precursor of HCNP but also serving as an inhibitor of phosphorylation of Erk and contributing to neuronal growth and memory formation. In this study, the accumulation of HCNP and/or HCNP precursor in hippocampus was found to progress from 2 to 5 months of age in senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8 (SAM P8). This HCNP surge in the hippocampus appears to correspond to the age of onset of memory deterioration, reduction of amount of NMDA-type receptor, and morphological aberration in this dementia model mouse, SAM P8. The present findings, together with our previously published results, suggest that the HCNP and/or HCNP precursor is involved in the dysfunction of the cholinergic neuronal system and memory deterioration in this model mouse via NMDA-type receptor signaling and the activation of the MAP cascade. Abstract: During an inspection to the south structure of Kinuura Bridge (Japan) in June 2003, a number of fatigue cracks were found in many butt welds in the longitudinal ribs of the orthotropic deck. The structure was completed and opened to traffic in 1978. Geometry of the joints and crack features are described in detail. Experimental data obtained in the past by testing the welded joints under constant stress amplitude are compared with theoretical predictions based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. It was found that lack of penetration zones of 2–3mm resulted in low fatigue strength of the butt welded joints. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A 72-year-old man presented with pain and swelling in the penis, indicating penile infection or abscess. An ultrasound was performed but unable to lead to a diagnosis of abscess. Magnetic resonance imaging with diffusion-weighted imaging was strongly suggestive of penile abscess. The puncture of the abscess was unsuccessful. However, pus was drained spontaneously via the urethra, and the symptoms disappeared eventually. Although ultrasound can be useful, sometimes it might be difficult to distinguish between inflammatory tissue and abscess containing necrotic tissue. Magnetic resonance imaging, especially diffusion-weighted imaging, can be a powerful tool for diagnosing abscess in the penis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper discusses methods for evaluating the fatigue life when combined normal and shear stresses are applied in phase simultaneously. The conventional fatigue design procedures based on maximum principal or normal stress ranges are reviewed using published data. This indicates that the fatigue life may be under- or overestimated by the procedures, when the shear-to-normal-stress ratio range is close to 1.0. A proposed alternative procedure, based on the equivalent stress range and the fatigue life for a normal stress range, produces a much more appropriate evaluation of the fatigue life for combined stress ranges, independent of the ratio.
