Abstract

One of the most difficult and important problems encountered in the automatic digitizing of graphical topographic maps is the identification and separate digitizing of different kinds of features. Essentially, in topographic maps, there are two kinds of geometric features: linear features, such as roads and railways that have an arbitrary length, and symbols, which indicate a type of building or area of land usage or even numerical information. In this paper, these two types of features are extracted and recognized by using methods based on multiangled parallelism (MAP). The MAP operation method performs parallel calculation on directional feature planes. The linear features are extracted using erosion-dilation operations on the directional feature planes, and the symbols are extracted using a reformalized and parallel version of the generalized Hough transformation on the same directional planes, which we call the MAP matching method. The methods have been applied to a 1/25 000 scale map.

Abstract

This paper presents segment matching as a correlation method in feature space. One way to improve the function of such a method is to increase the number of effective features. This paper proposes reciprocal feature extraction which simultaneously extracts and utilizes the stroke and concave space features, which have not been used simultaneously. Abstract

This paper applies the dynamic programming (DP) matching to the border extraction from the dynamic echocardiogram of the heart along the short axis. The method is based on the DP matching for the two-dimensional static image. The sampled values are stabilized by the integration by time, and the border features are emphasized by the differentiation in time. The matching is made using the spatial derivative intensity, the spatial derivative direction, and the time derivative intensity. The use of the continuity constraint along the time axis in the matching is discussed. Utilizing the property of the object that the motion is periodic within a certain range, the point of motion is determined from the sum of the time derivative over a pulsatile period. and the result is utilized in the matching constraint. Abstract

This paper discusses the application of two-dimensional dynamic programming (DP) matching to ultrasonic kidney images. By introducing the model-matching technique, feature extraction of the object organ is achieved. It is also possible to reconstruct the three-dimensional structure of the organ. The proposed technique has the following features. (1) Unlike the monotone continuous condition employed in speech recognition, the two-dimensional DP method has no time-sequence constraints. (2) The recognition performance is improved by utilizing the edge information. (3) Hierarchical construction of DP from coarse to fine grids improves the processing speed. (4) The method allows man-machine interaction by fixing a point on the contour of the object. (5) The method can be applied to time-series and/or three-dimensional consecutive images and the speed is improved by using the object from the previous image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

35. RECOGNITION OF ELEVATION VALUE IN TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS BY MULTI-ANGLED PARALLELISM.

Abstract

We have proposed the MAP (Multi-Angled Parallel) operation method which extracts geometric features from a topographic map using erosion-dilation operations on a directional feature field. We have also proposed the MAP matching method which recognizes fixed-shaped symbols in the topographic map by using parallel operations on the same directional feature field. We have shown that all kinds of feature extraction and recognition can be effectively performed within the framework of parallel operation. In this paper, we show that elevation values in a topographic map can be recognized by a combination of MAP operation with the MAP matching. Numerals and symbols are recognized by the MAP matching method, while small dots and lines are extracted by the MAP operation method. These results are used together to determine the value, position and attribute of elevations in topographic maps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
