Abstract The aim of this study was to establish and validate the precision of a novel radiomics approach that integrates 18Fluorine-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) scan data with clinical information to improve the prognostication of survival rates in patients diagnosed with stage III Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) who are not candidates for surgery. We evaluated pretreatment 18F-FDG PET-CT scans from 156 individuals diagnosed with stage III inoperable NSCLC at Shandong Cancer Hospital. These individuals were divided into two groups: a training set comprising 110 patients and an internal validation set consisting of 46 patients. By employing random forest classifier and cox proportional hazards model , we identified and utilized relevant features to create predictive models and a nomogram. The effectiveness of these models was assessed through the use of the receiver operating characteristics(ROC) curves, Kaplan–Meier (KM) curves, and the application of the nomogram. Our findings showed that the combined model, which integrates both clinical and radiomic data, outperformed those based solely on clinical or radiomic features in predicting 3-year overall survival(OS). Furthermore, calibration plots revealed a high level of agreement between predicted and actual survival times. The research successfully established a predictive radiomics model that integrates 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging with clinical indicators to enhance survival predictions for patients with stage III inoperable NSCLC.

[Introduction] In the nuclear power plant, the steam pipeline is generally installed with an insulation layer on the outer wall to improve heat transfer efficiency. Currently, the main detection means for ferromagnetic pipelines are conventional ultrasound and ultrasonic guided waves. Prior to the inspection, the insulation layer on the outer wall of the pipeline needs to be removed, leading to extended inspection time, increased labor costs, and an inability to meet the requirements for high-quality development in nuclear power plants. The application of the pulsed eddy current (PEC) technique for nuclear power plants can eliminate the need for insulation layer removal, enabling non-stop online screening. The defects testing by coil placement is an essential indicator of the PEC technique. [Method] In this paper, the modeling and simulation of the pipelines was conducted by applying ANSYS Maxwell, coaxial and vertical detection coils were designed respectively to simulate the detection capability of PEC on flat bottom defects with consistency in the lift-off distance, materials and other conditions. Sample pipes were selected from the nuclear power plant for coaxial and vertical PEC testing. The pulsed eddy current testing (PECT) results were cross-validated with ultrasonic thickness measurement, and the effects of two coil placement methods on PECT were compared. [Result] The results show that vertical coils are more effective in defect detection compared to coaxial coils. [Conclusion] The defects testing by coil placement has great significance for implementing PEC in the nuclear power sector.

Abstract The physical characteristics of classrooms can significantly impact the physical and mental health as well as the learning performance of college students. This study investigates the effects of classroom size and ceiling height on learning performance using virtual reality technology. Four classroom settings were created: two small classrooms (40.5 m2) with ceiling heights of 3.0 m and 3.9 m, and two large classrooms (62.1 m2) with ceiling heights of 3.9 m and 4.8 m. 34 students participated in task tests while their subjective evaluations and physiological data were recorded. Results showed higher subjective ratings in larger classrooms with the same ceiling height. Classroom size did not significantly affect task test scores. However, there is a significant difference in Task test scores for ceilings of different heights with the same size classroom. The task test improved by 17.3% in the Big and High Room (BHR) and by 20.1% in the Small and Low Room (SLR). Physiological data revealed significant effects of ceiling height, with HRV-nLF/nHF and EEG-β power increasing by 26.5% and 53.9% in BHR, and by 10.7% and 22.8% in SLR, respectively. This study concludes that classroom size and ceiling height plays a crucial role in learning performance and provides insights for classroom design. It also establishes a framework for future research on the interplay between heart rate variability, EEG, and learning performance.

Abstract Background and Aims In this study, a pediatric hospital was selected as the study setting, to investigate the effects of the environment of a pediatric operating room child‐friendly space on preschool children under anesthesia. Methods Interviews were conducted in pediatric hospitals through anesthesia of preschool children. This study randomizing children between the ages of 1 and 7 years (seven males, five females, mean age 3.8 years, standard deviation 0.7). Twelve participants took part in this interview, which was an in‐depth interview of preschoolers' perceptions of anesthesia using generalized data analysis to assess young children's perceived preferences and sensitivity to the environment. Preschoolers' preferences for feeling under anesthesia are reflected in four main areas. Results (1) Interesting and engaging environment. (2) Humanized design, free of fear and unfamiliarity. (3) Caring, patient, and compassionate care by healthcare professionals. (4) High cooperation of the child and good doctor–patient relationship. Conclusion The key findings of this study may help designers and clinicians to design a toddler‐friendly built environment where pediatric hospital child‐friendly spaces are designed to benefit their health and maximize their cooperation and psychological recovery.

PurposeThis study was designed to determine the diagnostic performance of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) radiomics-based machine learning (ML) in the classification of cervical adenocarcinoma (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).MethodsPretreatment 18F-FDG PET/CT data were retrospectively collected from patients who were diagnosed with locally advanced cervical cancer at two centers. Radiomics features were extracted and selected by the Pearson correlation coefficient and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis. Six ML algorithms were then applied to establish models, and the best-performing classifier was selected based on accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). The performance of different model was assessed and compared using the DeLong test.ResultsA total of 227 patients with locally advanced cervical cancer were enrolled in this study (N=136 for the training cohort, N=59 for the internal validation cohort, and N=32 for the external validation cohort). The PET radiomics model constructed based on the lightGBM algorithm had an accuracy of 0.915 and an AUC of 0.851 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.715-0.986) in the internal validation cohort, which were higher than those of the CT radiomics model (accuracy: 0.661; AUC: 0.513 [95% CI, 0.339-0.688]). The DeLong test revealed no significant difference in AUC between the combined radiomics model and the PET radiomics model in either the training cohort (z=0.940, P=0.347) or the internal validation cohort (z=0.285, P=0.776). In the external validation cohort, the lightGBM-based PET radiomics model achieved good discrimination between SCC and AC (AUC = 0.730).ConclusionsThe lightGBM-based PET radiomics model had great potential to predict the fine histological subtypes of locally advanced cervical cancer and might serve as a promising noninvasive approach for the diagnosis and management of locally advanced cervical cancer.

Planthoppers are an interesting and contrasting model among insects for studying the subterranean environments. Their morphological and ethological adaptations to the underground conditions (complete darkness, lower temperatures, high hygrometry, stability of environmental constants, rarefied food sources, etc.), and their worldwide distribution in both temperate and tropical areas make them an interesting model among invertebrates. In this review, we highlight why cave planthoppers study matters, with particular emphasis on the Cixiidae. The two hypotheses proposed, the ‘climatic relict hypothesis’ and the ‘adaptive shift’, are not sufficient enough to clearly understand and explain the drivers to cavernicoly. Phylogenetic analyses approaches might help to better document and increase our knowledge on such peculiar environments. The singularity of the distribution pattern of the adaptation to cavernicoly in planthoppers raises also interesting questions to investigate and suggest contrasting scenarios to explore further, particularly should the Cixiidae be defined as a subtroglophile lineage?

IntroductionVerticillium dahliae, a soil-borne fungal pathogen, can cause cotton Verticillium wilt. In this study, VdP5CDH, the member of the ALDH_F4-17 family of carboxylate dehydrogenases, was identified in the genome of V. dahliae and investigated function in regulating virulence by generating gene deletion mutants and complementary mutants.MethodsHomologous recombination method was used to construct mutants, transcriptome sequencing revealed gene-related metabolic pathways, and disease degree of cotton was observed through pathogen infection experiments.ResultsThe conidial surface of VdP5CDH deletion strains was dented and shriveled, and the number of conidial spores increased. Compared with the wild-type (WT), the mycelial diameter of deletion mutants increased by 10.59%-11.16%, the mycelial growth showed irregular branching patterns, and misaligned arrangement. Although capable of penetrating cellophane, deletion mutants were unable to produce melanin. VdP5CDH was mainly associated with glucose metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, ABC transporter activity as well as various amino acid metabolic processes. After gene knockout, raffinose and pectin were used as the main carbon sources to promote the growth of strains and the growth rate of deletion strains in the medium containing raffinose was higher than that of WT. Consequently, the deletion mutant strains decreased utilization efficiency with which they utilized various nitrogen sources. The deletion mutants maintain responsiveness to osmotic stress and oxidative stress stimuli. Additionally, compared to WT strains, the deletion mutant strains exhibited differences in culture temperature tolerance, UV exposure response, and fungicide sensitivity. After cotton was infected with deletion strains conidial suspension, its disease index increased dramatically, while it gradually decreased after spraying with 2 mM glutamate in batches. With the increase of spraying times, the effect was more significant, and the disease index decreased by 18.95%-19.66% at 26 dpi.DiscussionThese results indicated that VdP5CDH regulates the pathogenicity of fungi and controls mycelia growth, melanin formation, conidia morphology, abiotic stress resistance, and the expression of infecting structure-related genes.

BackgroundLung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) ranks among the carcinomas with the highest incidence and dismal survival rates, suffering from a lack of effective therapeutic strategies. Consequently, biomarkers facilitating early diagnosis of LUSC could significantly enhance patient survival. This study aims to identify novel biomarkers for LUSC.MethodsUtilizing the TCGA, GTEx, and CGGA databases, we focused on the gene encoding Family with Sequence Similarity 20, Member A (FAM20A) across various cancers. We then corroborated these bioinformatic predictions with clinical samples. A range of analytical tools, including Kaplan-Meier, MethSurv database, Wilcoxon rank-sum, Kruskal-Wallis tests, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis, and TIMER database, were employed to assess the diagnostic and prognostic value of FAM20A in LUSC. These tools also helped evaluate immune cell infiltration, immune checkpoint genes, DNA repair-related genes, DNA methylation, and tumor-related pathways.ResultsFAM20A expression was found to be significantly reduced in LUSC, correlating with lower survival rates. It exhibited a negative correlation with key proteins in DNA repair signaling pathways, potentially contributing to LUSC’s radiotherapy resistance. Additionally, FAM20A showed a positive correlation with immune checkpoints like CTLA-4, indicating potential heightened sensitivity to immunotherapies targeting these checkpoints.ConclusionFAM20A emerges as a promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for LUSC, offering potential clinical applications.

Sirtuins are pivotal in orchestrating numerous cellular pathways, critically influencing cell metabolism, DNA repair, aging processes, and oxidative stress. In recent years, the involvement of sirtuins in tumor biology has garnered substantial attention, with a growing body of evidence underscoring their regulatory roles in various aberrant cellular processes within tumor environments. This article delves into the sirtuin family and its biological functions, shedding light on their dual roles—either as promoters or inhibitors—in various cancers including oral, breast, hepatocellular, lung, and gastric cancers. It further explores potential anti-tumor agents targeting sirtuins, unraveling the complex interplay between sirtuins, miRNAs, and chemotherapeutic drugs. The dual roles of sirtuins in cancer biology reflect the complexity of targeting these enzymes but also highlight the immense therapeutic potential. These advancements hold significant promise for enhancing clinical outcomes, marking a pivotal step forward in the ongoing battle against cancer.

Abstract Genomic dissection of genetic effects on desirable traits and the subsequent use of genomic selection hold great promise for accelerating the rate of genetic improvement of forest tree species. In this study, a total of 661 offspring trees from 66 open-pollinated families of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi (Lam.) Carrière) were sampled at a test site. The contributions of additive and non-additive effects (dominance, imprinting and epistasis) were evaluated for nine valuable traits related to growth, wood physical and chemical properties, and competitive ability using three pedigree-based and four Genomics-based Best Linear Unbiased Predictions (GBLUP) models and used to determine the genetic model. The predictive ability (PA) of two genomic prediction methods, GBLUP and Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS), was compared. The traits could be classified into two types based on different quantitative genetic architectures: for type I, including wood chemical properties and Pilodyn penetration, additive effect is the main source of variation (38.20-67.46%); for type II, including growth, competitive ability and acoustic velocity, epistasis plays a significant role (50.76-91.26%). Abstract Background The existing staging system cannot meet the needs of accurate survival prediction. Accurate survival prediction for locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) patients who have undergone concurrent radiochemotherapy (CCRT) can improve their treatment management. Thus, this present study aimed to develop and validate radiomics models based on pretreatment 18Fluorine-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) images to accurately predict the prognosis in patients. Methods The data from 190 consecutive patients with LACC who underwent pretreatment 18F-FDG PET-CT and CCRT at two cancer hospitals were retrospectively analyzed; 176 patients from the same hospital were randomly divided into training (n = 117) and internal validation (n = 50) cohorts. Clinical features were selected from the training cohort using univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models; radiomic features were extracted from PET and CT images and filtered using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and Cox proportional hazard regression. Three prediction models and a nomogram were then constructed using the previously selected clinical, CT and PET radiomics features. The external validation cohort that was used to validate the models included 23 patients with LACC from another cancer hospital. The predictive performance of the constructed models was evaluated using receiver operator characteristic curves, Kaplan Meier curves, and a nomogram. Results In total, one clinical, one PET radiomics, and three CT radiomics features were significantly associated with progression-free survival in the training cohort. Across all three cohorts, the combined model displayed better efficacy and clinical utility than any of these parameters alone in predicting 3-year progression-free survival (area under curve: 0.661, 0.718, and 0.775; C-index: 0.698, 0.724, and 0.705, respectively) and 5-year progression-free survival (area under curve: 0.661, 0.711, and 0.767; C-index, 0.698, 0.722, and 0.676, respectively). On subsequent construction of a nomogram, the calibration curve demonstrated good agreement between actually observed and nomogram-predicted values. Conclusions In this study, a clinico-radiomics prediction model was developed and successfully validated using an independent external validation cohort. The nomogram incorporating radiomics and clinical features could be a useful clinical tool for the early and accurate assessment of long-term prognosis in patients with LACC patients who undergo concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

A review of the leafhopper tribe Deltocephalini in Pakistan is provided, including comprehensive illustrated keys to all genera and species, along with their diagnosis and distribution. A new species of Paramesodes is described, P. dirensis sp. nov., which was discovered in the Upper Dir District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A detailed description of this new species is provided together with photographs for visual reference. This tribe now has three genera and 13 species from Pakistan. The genus Deltocephalus Burmeister includes two species, and Maiestas Distant has nine species; Paramesodes Ishihara is now represented with two species.

The leafhopper genus Elymana DeLong, 1936 (Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae: Cicadulini) is reported for the first time from the Indian subcontinent (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan) with the redescription and first photographic illustrations of the habitus and male genitalia of Elymana sulphurella (Zetterstedt, 1828). Elymana sulphurella (Zetterstedt) typically measures between 4 and 5 mm in length and is widely spread in Europe. A worldwide checklist with the distribution of species of Elymana DeLong is provided.

Sti1/Hop, a stress-induced co-chaperone protein, serves as a crucial link between Hsp70 and Hsp90 during cellular stress responses. Despite its importance in stress defense mechanisms, the biological role of Sti1 in Verticillium dahliae, a destructive fungal pathogen, remains largely unexplored. This study focused on identifying and characterizing Sti1 homologues in V. dahliae by comparing them to those found in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results indicated that the VdSti1-deficient mutant displayed increased sensitivity to drugs targeting the ergosterol synthesis pathway, leading to a notable inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis. Moreover, the mutant exhibited reduced production of microsclerotia and melanin, accompanied by decreased expression of microsclerotia and melanin-related genes VDH1, Vayg1, and VaflM. Additionally, the mutant’s conidia showed more severe damage under heat shock conditions and displayed growth defects under various stressors such as temperature, SDS, and CR stress, as well as increased sensitivity to H2O2, while osmotic stress did not impact its growth. Importantly, the VdSti1-deficient mutant demonstrated significantly diminished pathogenicity compared to the wild-type strain. This study sheds light on the functional conservation and divergence of Sti1 homologues in fungal biology and underscores the critical role of VdSti1 in microsclerotia development, stress response, and pathogenicity of V. dahliae.

The impact of short-term exposure to air pollutants on the morbidity of schizophrenia, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, remains inadequately explored. The objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and the risk of schizophrenia hospitalization in Jingmen, China. We performed a time-stratified case-crossover study using daily records of hospital admissions due to schizophrenia in Jingmen Mental Health Center from 2015 to 2017. Environmental exposures to air pollutants and meteorological conditions on case and control days were estimated on the basis of measurements from ground monitoring stations. To investigate the relationship between short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and the risk of hospitalization for schizophrenia, a conditional logistic regression model was employed. We performed subgroup analyses stratified according to sex, age groups, and season. In total, 4079 schizophrenia hospitalizations were recorded during the designated period. Increased risk of schizophrenia was merely associated with short-term exposure to SO2 and NO2. The estimated odds per interquartile range (IQR) increase in exposure was 1.112 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.033, 1.196) for SO2 (IQR = 12 µg/m3) and 1.112 (95% CI: 1.033, 1.197) for NO2 (IQR = 18 µg/m3) on lag-0 day. Greater air pollution-schizophrenia associations were observed among middle-aged and older adults (over 45 years of age) and during the cold season. This study added case-crossover evidence indicating that short-term exposure to ambient air pollution, specifically SO2 and NO2, is linked to a higher risk of hospital admissions for schizophrenia. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the detrimental effects of air pollution on neuropsychiatric health conditions.

Abstract Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are an important component of the tumor microenvironment that are involved in multiple aspects of cancer progression and considered contributors to tumor immune escape. CAFs exhibit a unique radiation resistance phenotype, and can survive clinical radiation doses; however, ionizing radiation can induce changes in their secretions and influence tumor progression by acting on tumor and immune cells. In this review, we describe current knowledge of the effects of radiation therapies on CAFs, as well as summarizing understanding of crosstalk among CAFs, tumor cells, and immune cells. We highlight the important role of CAFs in radiotherapy resistance, and discuss current and future radiotherapy strategies for targeting CAFs.

Abstract Purpose In this study, exercise interventions were evaluated for their effects on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and quality of life (QoL) among cancer patients. Design A meta-analysis was performed. Methods We systematically searched the PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases, and gray literature sources including the Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library and Google Scholar. This study only included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining how exercise interventions affect CRF and QoL among cancer patients. Based on the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Assessment Tool, version 2 (RoB 2) and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach, the methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated. In addition, standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were applied to assess the intervention effect with respect to CRF and QoL. Data analysis was performed using Review Manager (version 5.4). Results There were a total of 1573 participants in the 28 included articles. Abstract MXenes are a family of two‐dimensional (2D) layered transition metal carbides/nitrides that show promising potential for energy storage applications due to their high‐specific surface areas, excellent electron conductivity, good hydrophilicity, and tunable terminations. Among various types of MXenes, Ti3C2Tx is the most widely studied for use in capacitive energy storage applications, especially in supercapacitors (SCs). However, the stacking and oxidation of MXene sheets inevitably lead to a significant loss of electrochemically active sites. To overcome such challenges, carbon materials are frequently incorporated into MXenes to enhance their electrochemical properties. This review introduces the common strategies used for synthesizing Ti3C2Tx, followed by a comprehensive overview of recent developments in Ti3C2Tx/carbon composites as electrode materials for SCs. Ti3C2Tx/carbon composites are categorized based on the dimensions of carbons, including 0D carbon dots, 1D carbon nanotubes and fibers, 2D graphene, and 3D carbon materials (activated carbon, polymer‐derived carbon, etc.). Finally, this review also provides a perspective on developing novel MXenes/carbon composites as electrodes for application in SCs.

Prior investigations have primarily focused on the impact of L-arabinose on gut microbiota, with limited exploration into the dual mechanisms of L-arabinose on microbiota and metabolism both in vivo and in vitro. Thus, this study aimed to elucidate the anti-inflammatory effects of 5 % L-arabinose under different diet in mice. Additionally, a colon simulation system (CDMN) with utilizing 1.72 % (w/v) L-arabinose in the lumen and mucus layers, to provide further insights into the underlying mechanisms. The results revealed that L-arabinose significantly altered the gut microbiome structure, particularly elevating Bifidobacterium and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) both in vivo and in vitro. Subsequent in vitro experiments confirmed that L-arabinose increased the relative abundance of SCFAs-producing bacteria, facilitated linoleic acid metabolism, and enhanced downstream metabolites (12,13-DHOME, 9,10-DHOME), potentially mediated by Bifidobacterium in the descending colon. These findings underscore the role of L-arabinose in modulating intestinal flora and metabolism, thereby promoting intestinal and body health.

Noninvasive differentiation between the squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (ADC) subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) could benefit patients who are unsuitable for invasive diagnostic procedures. Therefore, this study evaluates the predictive performance of a PET/CT-based radiomics model. It aims to distinguish between the histological subtypes of lung adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, employing four different machine learning techniques. A total of 255 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients were retrospectively analyzed and randomly divided into the training (n = 177) and validation (n = 78) sets, respectively. Radiomics features were extracted, and the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) method was employed for feature selection. Subsequently, models were constructed using four distinct machine learning techniques, with the top-performing algorithm determined by evaluating metrics such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the curve (AUC). The efficacy of the various models was appraised and compared using the DeLong test. A nomogram was developed based on the model with the best predictive efficiency and clinical utility, and it was validated using calibration curves. Results indicated that the logistic regression classifier had better predictive power in the validation cohort of the radiomic model. The combined model (AUC 0.870) exhibited superior predictive power compared to the clinical model (AUC 0.848) and the radiomics model (AUC 0.774). In this study, we discovered that the combined model, refined by the logistic regression classifier, exhibited the most effective performance in classifying the histological subtypes of NSCLC.

Pancreatic cancer, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs), is a malignant tumor with characteristics of tumor-stroma interactions. Patients often have a poor prognosis and a poor long-term survival rate. In recent years, rapidly-developing single-cell sequencing techniques have been used to analyze cell populations at a single-cell resolution, so that it is now possible to have a more in-depth and clearer understanding of the genetic composition of pancreatic cancer. In this review, we provide an overview of the current single-cell sequencing techniques and their applications in the exploration of intratumoral heterogeneity, the tumor microenvironment, therapy resistance, and novel treatments. Our hope is to provide new insight into the potential of precision therapy, which will perhaps one day lead to significant advances in PDAC treatment.

Liver diseases constitute a major healthcare burden globally, including acute hepatic injury resulted from acetaminophen overdose, ischemia–reperfusion or hepatotropic viral infection and chronic hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease (ALD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Attainable treatment strategies for most liver diseases remain inadequate, highlighting the importance of substantial pathogenesis. The transient receptor potential (TRP) channels represent a versatile signalling mechanism regulating fundamental physiological processes in the liver. It is not surprising that liver diseases become a newly explored field to enrich our knowledge of TRP channels. Here, we discuss recent findings revealing TRP functions across the fundamental pathological course from early hepatocellular injury caused by various insults, to inflammation, subsequent fibrosis and hepatoma. We also explore expression levels of TRPs in liver tissues of ALD, NAFLD and HCC patients from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) or The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and survival analysis estimated by Kaplan–Meier Plotter. At last, we address the therapeutical potential and challenges by pharmacologically targeting TRPs to treat liver diseases. The aim is to provide a better understanding of the implications of TRP channels in liver diseases, contributing to the discovery of novel therapeutic targets and efficient drugs.

Abstract Background Asthma is characterized by chronic inflammation and airway remodeling. However, limited study is conducted on the gene expression profiles of ovalbumin (OVA) induced asthma in mice. Here, we explored the gene expression profiles in lung tissues from mice with OVA-induced asthma using microarray and bioinformatics analysis. Methods For establishment of OVA-induced asthma model, mice first received intraperitoneal sensitization with OVA on day 0, 7 and 14, followed by atomizing inhalation of OVA 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The lung tissues were collected and subjected to microarray analysis, bioinformatics analysis and expression validation. Results Microarray data of lung tissues suggested that 3754 lncRNAs and 2976 mRNAs were differentially expressed in lung tissues between control and asthmatic mice, including 1647 up-regulated and 2106 down-regulated lncRNAs, and 1201 up-regulated and 1766 down-regulated mRNAs. GO analysis displayed that the up-regulated genes were enriched in inflammatory response, leukocyte migration involved in inflammatory response, and Notch signaling pathway. KEGG pathway analysis indicated that the enriched pathway terms of the up-regulated gene included Toll-like receptor signaling pathway and Th17 cell differentiation signaling pathway. Additionally, based on the previously published literatures on asthma and inflammation, we screened out down-regulated genes, such as Smg7, Sumo2, and Stat5a, and up-regulated genes, such as Myl9, Fos and Tlr4. According to the mRNA-lncRNA co-expression network, we selected lncRNAs associated with above genes, including the down-regulated lncRNAs of NONMMUT032848, NONMMUT008873, NONMMUT009478, and NONMMUT006807, and the up-regulated lncRNAs of NONMMUT052633, NONMMUT05340 and NONMMUT042325. The expression changes of the above genes were validated in lung tissues by real-time quantitaive PCR and Western blot. Conclusions Overall, we performed gene microarray on lung samples from OVA-induced asthmatic mice and summarized core mRNAs and their related lncRNAs. This study may provide evidence for further research on the therapeutic targets of asthma.

In order to solve the problem of load variation and nonlinear strong coupling of the quadrotor load unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), this paper proposes a fuzzy adaptive linear active disturbance rejection control algorithm based on the Kalman filter (KFFA-LADRC). Firstly, according to the established dynamics model of the quadrotor load UAV, the linear extended state observer (LESO) and the controller based on the bandwidth method are designed. Secondly, to enhance the system’s adaptability and robustness, a real-time fuzzy adaptive controller is introduced to dynamically adjust the controller parameters. Furthermore, to tackle uncertainties disturbances arising from sensor noise and unknown external disturbances, the Kalman filter is utilized to predict the output state, thereby providing the optimal estimation input for the LESO. The approach not only achieves stable control of internal interference, but also reduces the dependence of the Kalman filter on the mathematical model. Finally, simulation results substantiate the efficacy of the proposed KFFA-LADRC, highlighting its robustness and adaptability when accommodating variations in load mass, sensor noise, and external interferences within unfamiliar environments.

Xinjiang 'Saimaiti' apricot fruit were used as the material to study the inhibitory effects of postharvest treatment with melatonin on black spot and its influence on reactive oxygen species metabolism. Fruit were vacuum impregnated into different concentrations of melatonin (50, 100, 200 μmol/L) under pressure of 0.05 MPa for 2 min, then atmospheric pressure was restored, and the fruit was maintained in the same solution for 8 min. The distilled water treatment was used as blank control. After naturally drying, the fruit were refrigerated (0±1℃, RH 90%~95%) for 48 h. After that, apricot fruits were inoculated with Alternaria alternata and stored at the same conditions.The lesion diameter and disease incidence of apricot fruit inoculated with A.alternata, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and superoxide anion radical (O2−·) production rate, cell membrane permeability, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents were measured regularly. Results showed that compared with the control group, different concentrations of exogenous melatonin treatment significantly delayed the increase of apricot fruit morbidity and inhibited the increase of apricot fruit the lesion diameter. Abstract Background In our previous study, a strain EBS03 with good biocontrol potential was screened out of 48 strains of cotton endophyte Bacillus subtilis by evaluating the controlling effect against cotton Verticillium wilt. However, its mechanism for controlling Verticillium wilt remains unclear. The objective of this study was to further clarify its controlling effect and mechanism against cotton Verticillium wilt. Results The results of confrontation culture test and double buckle culture test showed that the inhibitory effects of EBS03 volatile and nonvolatile metabolite on mycelium growth of Verticillium dahliae were 70.03% and 59.00%, respectively; the inhibitory effects of sporulation and microsclerotia germination were 47.16% and 70.06%, respectively. In the greenhouse test, the EBS03 fermentation broth root irrigation had the highest controlling effect at 87.11% on cotton Verticillium wilt, and significantly promoted the growth of cotton seedlings. In the field experiment, the controlling effect of EBS03 fermentation broth to cotton Verticillium wilt was 42.54% at 60 days after cotton sowing, and the boll number per plant and boll weight in EBS03 fermentation broth seed soaking, root irrigation, and spraying treatments significantly increased by 19.48% and 7.42%, 30.90% and 2.62%, 15.99% and 9.20%, respectively. Furthermore, EBS03 improved the resistance of cotton leaves against the infection of V. dahliae, and induced the outbreak of reactive oxygen species and accumulation of callose. In addition, the results of real time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) detection showed that EBS03 significantly induced upregulation expression level of defense-related genes PAL, POD, PPO, and PR10 in cotton leaves, enhanced cotton plant resistance to V. dahliae, and inhibited colonization level of this fungal pathogen in cotton. Conclusion Bacillus subtilis EBS03 has a good biological defense capability, which can inhibit the growth and colonization level of V. dahliae, and activate the resistance of cotton to Verticillium wilt, thus increase cotton yield.

Abstract Background Burnout occurs frequently in nurses and seems more common in nurses providing palliative care. However, to our knowledge, there is a lack of understanding regarding the factors influencing burnout among palliative nurses in China. Methods A cross-sectional design was conducted. A total of 331 palliative nurses from 25 hospitals participated in this study. Anonymous data were collected through a self-designed social-demographic questionnaire, the Nursing Burnout Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. Independent sample t tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple linear regressions were performed to identify the related factors of the three dimensions of burnout. Results In the results of multiple linear regression, resilience, health condition, coping style, and pessimistic personality were common related factors; in addition, end-of-life care training, social support, and income satisfaction were statistically significantly associated with burnout. These factors could explain 38.6%, 27.8%, and 34.5% of the total variance in emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, respectively. Conclusions The findings of this study help policy makers and nurse managers better understand burnout among palliative nurses in China. The results highlighted the importance of implementing culture-oriented training programs, providing perceived organizational support, and building a reasonable salary system to decrease burnout among palliative nurses, increase the quality of nursing and promote the development of Chinese palliative care.

Abstract Background General practitioners are the main providers of primary care services. To better strengthen the important role of general practitioners in primary healthcare services, China is promoting the general practitioners’ office system. There is a lack of well-accepted methods to measure the performance of general practitioner offices in China. We thus aim to develop a systematic and operable performance measurement system for evaluating the general practitioner’s office. Methods We establish an index pool of the performance measurement system of general practitioners’ offices by a cross-sectional study and the literature research method and adopt the focus group method to establish the preliminary system. The Delphi method is then used to conduct three rounds of consultation to modify indices, which aims to form the final indicator system. We determine the weight of each index by the analytic hierarchy process method, which together with the final indicator system constitutes the final performance measurement system. Finally, we select three offices from three different cities in Sichuan Province, China, as case offices to conduct the case study, aiming to assess its credibility. Results Our results show that the first office scored 958.5 points, the second scored 768.1 points, and the third scored 947.7 points, which corresponds to the reality of these three offices, meaning that the performance measurement system is effective and manoeuvrable. Conclusions Our study provides support for standardizing the functions of China’s general practitioner’s office, improving the health service quality of generalists, and providing a theoretical basis for the standardization of the general practitioner’s office.

A new planthoppers genus and species of Cixiidae Oecleini, Coframalaxius bletteryi gen. et sp. nov. newly discovered in a cave near Nice in southern France, is described. Molecular analysis confirms the morphology-based classification of Coframalaxius as sister to Trigonocranus within the Oecleni. Several morphological characters are further discussed. A double-grasping coxo-femoral and femoro-tibial system is regarded as apomorphic for the oecline taxa and would allow the nymph to firmly grab the roots and rootlets on which it feeds or use to progress in the soil. Wing vein patterns are discussed in the Cixiidae: 1) for the forewings, Oecleini belong to the trifid type of the anterior MP branch, leading to the reinterpretation of some recently described Neotropical species, 2) for the hindwing, four connection types (U-, V-, Y- and I-types) between MP and CuA are described. Oecleini belongs to I-type with a complete fusion of MP3+4 with CuA1. Although the area where the cave is located is well-studied with respect to its regularly sampled epigean fauna for many years, the taxon is new to science, highlighting its probable completely hypogean life cycle and leading to consider Coframalaxius bletteryi as an eutroglophile species.

IntroductionAtrial fibrillation (AF) is a challenging cardiovascular disease worldwide. Wearable electrocardiograph devices (WEDs) have great potential to improve the detection rate of AF in primary care. However, the factors that influence general practitioners’ (GPs) perception and acceptance of WEDs are not well understood. To identify factors that influence the intention of GPs to utilize WEDs in a clinical setting to screen patients for AF.MethodThe research hypotheses and questionnaire items were designed and developed based on the unified theory of acceptance and technology (UTAUT) framework. We used stratified sampling and obtained the data through an online survey. ObjectiveThis study was aimed to analyze the research status and development trend of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), focusing on the field of programmed cell death of CSCC, and providing suggestions for the research of CSCC.MethodsThe publications related to CSCC and CSCC programmed cell death were searched in the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database, and timespan was set from 2012 to middle 2022. Research trends, authors, major country collaborations, research institutions, representative journals, publishers, and keywords were analyzed with CiteSpace and VOSviewer.ResultsAfter screening, a total of 3656 publications on CSCC and 156 publications on CSCC cell programmed death were obtained. The number of published articles increased gradually with the years. The United States ranked first in terms of the number of published papers. Research in this field had focused on dermatology. Most of the institutions in both regions were from European and American countries. Harvard University was the most prolific institution. Wiley was the most prolific publisher. The popular keywords for programmed cell death in CSCC were cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, diagnosis, pd 1, head, nivolumab and risk. Keywords in CSCC field were divided into 7 clusters: cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, sentinel lymph node biopsy, skin cancer, B-Raf Proto-Oncogene, Serine/Threonine Kinase (BRAF) inhibitor and human Papillomaviruses, and P63 expression. Polyoxometalates (POMs) exhibit unique structural characteristics and excellent physical and chemical properties, which have attracted significant attention from scholars in the fields of anticancer research and chemotherapy. Herein, we successfully synthesized and structurally characterized two novel polyoxovanadates (POVs), denoted as POVs-1 and POVs-2, where [M(1-vIM)4]2[VV4O12]·H2O (M: NiII and MnII, 1-vinylimidazole abbreviated as 1-vIM) serve as ligands. The two POVs are isomeric and consist of fundamental structural units, each comprising one [V4O12]4− cluster, two [M(1-vIM)4]2+ cations, and one water molecule. Subsequently, we evaluated the cell viability of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG-2) cells treated with the synthesized POVs using the MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazoliumbromide) assay. And the changes in cell nucleus morphology, mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), and reactive oxygen species levels in HepG-2 exposed to POVs were monitored using specific fluorescent staining techniques. Both hybrid POVs showed potent inhibitory activities, induing apoptosis in HepG-2 cells along with significant mitochondria dysfunction and a burst of reactive oxygen species. Notably, the inhibitory effects of POVs-2 were more pronounced than those of POVs-1, which is primarily attributed to the different transition metal ions present. These findings underscore the intricate relationship between the metal components, structural characteristics, and the observed antitumor activities in HepG-2 cells.

Abstract Verticillium wilt, caused by the notorious fungal pathogen Verticillium dahliae, is one of the main limiting factors for cotton production. Due to the stable dormant structure microsclerotia, long-term variability and co-evolution with host plant, its pathogenicity mechanism is very complicated, and the interaction mechanism between pathogen and host plant is also unclear. So identification and functional analysis of the genes involved in the pathogenicity or virulence of this fungus will benefit to uncover the molecular pathogenic mechanism of V. dahliae. In this review, many multifunction genes covering microsclerotia development, pathogen infection, effector proteins, transcription factors, horizontal gene transfer and trans-kingdom RNA silencing have been summarized to provide a theoretical basis to deep understand the molecular pathogenicity mechanism of V. dahliae and promote to effectively control Verticillium wilt. Furtherly, these pathogenicity-related genes may be considered as targets for effective control of Verticillium wilt in cotton.

Abstract High quality Fe y Se1−x Te x epitaxial thin films have been fabricated on TiO2-buffered SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition technology. There is a significant composition deviation between the nominal target and the thin film. Te doping can affect the Se/Te ratio and Fe content in chemical composition. The superconducting transition temperature T c is closely related to the chemical composition. Fe vacancies are beneficial for the Fe y Se1−x Te x films to exhibit the higher T c . A 3D phase diagram is given that the optimize range is x = 0.13–0.15 and y = 0.73–0.78 for Fe y Se1−x Te x films. The anisotropic, effective pining energy, and critical current density for the Fe0.72Se0.94Te0.06, Fe0.76Se0.87Te0.13 and Fe0.91Se0.77Te0.23 films were studied in detail. The scanning transmission electron microscopy images display a regular atomic arrangement at the interfacial structure.

Five genera from China of the leafhopper tribe Typhlocybini are treated. Linnavuoriana Dlabola, 1958 and Shamala Dworakowska, 1980 and seven known species, Edwardsiana corylicola Vilbaste, 1968, E. praedestina Dlabola, 1967, E. singularis Anufriev, 1975, Hiratettix distanti Dworakowska, 1982, H. malaisei Dworakowska, 1982, L. antiqua Dworakowska, 1982, and L. malicola Zachvatkin, 1949 are newly recorded from China. Two new species, Shamala annulata and Paracyba biprocessa spp. nov., are described and illustrated. Keys to Chinese species of each genus are also provided.

ABSTRACT Verticillium dahliae Kleb is a typical soilborne pathogen that can cause vascular wilt disease on more than 400 plants. Functional analysis of genes related to the growth and virulence is crucial to revealing the molecular mechanism of the pathogenicity of V. dahliae. Glycosidase hydrolases can hydrolyze the glycosidic bond, and some can cause host plant immune response to V. dahliae. Here, we reported a functional validation of VdGAL4 as an α-galactosidase that belongs to glycoside hydrolase family 27. VdGAL4 could cause plant cell death, and its signal peptide plays an important role in cellular immune response. VdGAL4-triggered cell death depends on BAK1 and SOBIR1 in Nicotiana benthamiana. In V. dahliae, the function of VdGAL4 in mycelial growth, conidia, microsclerotium, and pathogenicity was studied by constructing VdGAL4 deletion and complementation mutants. Results showed that the deletion of VdGAL4 reduced the conidial yield and conidial germination rate of V. dahliae and changed the microscopic morphology of conidia; the mycelia were arranged more disorderly and were unable to produce microsclerotium. The VdGAL4 deletion mutants exhibited reduced utilization of different carbon sources, such as raffinose and sucrose. The VdGAL4 deletion mutants were also more sensitive to abiotic stress agents of SDS, sorbitol, low-temperature stress of 16°C, and high-temperature stress of 45°C. In addition, the VdGAL4 deletion mutants lost the ability to penetrate cellophane and its mycelium were disorderly arranged. Remarkably, VdGAL4 deletion mutants exhibited reduced pathogenicity of V. dahliae. These results showed that VdGAL4 played a critical role in the pathogenicity of V. dahliae by regulating mycelial growth, conidial morphology, and the formation of microsclerotium. IMPORTANCE This study showed that α-galactosidase VdGAL4 of V. dahliae could activate plant immune response and plays an important role in conidial morphology and yield, formation of microsclerotia, and mycelial penetration. VdGAL4 deletion mutants significantly reduced the pathogenicity of V. dahliae. These findings deepened the understanding of pathogenic virulence factors and how the mechanism of pathogenic fungi infected the host, which may help to seek new strategies for effective control of plant diseases caused by pathogenic fungi.

IntroductionLong-term continuous cropping may result in the outbreak and proliferation of soil-borne diseases, as well as reduction in annual crop production. Overcoming the obstacles of continuous cropping is critical for the long-term growth of modern agriculture. Soil microbes are essential for plant health, but the consequences of continuous cropping on soil microbiome are still poorly understood.MethodsThis study analyzed changes in soil bacterial community composition of Aksu (AKS) and Shihezi (SHZ) in Xinjiang Province during 1–20 years of continuous cropping by 16S amplicon sequencing. The results showed that the incidence of cotton Verticillium wilt rose with the number of cropping years. The bacterial alpha diversity in the AKS soil grew as the number of continuous cropping years increased, however it declined in the SHZ soil.ResultsThe results of beta diversity analysis showed that there were significant differences in soil bacterial communities between different continuous cropping years and between different soils. The results of community composition changes at the level of main phyla and genus showed that the relative abundance of Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Streptomyces decreased with the increase of continuous cropping years in the AKS and the SHZ soils. In addition, Actinobacteria, Propionibacteriales, and Nocardioidaceae were significantly enriched during the early stages of continuous cropping. Network analysis showed that long-term (≥8 years) continuous cropping interfered with the complexity of soil bacterial co-occurrence networks and reduced collaboration between OTUs.DiscussionThese findings suggested that continuous cropping and soil origin jointly affected the diversity and structural of bacterial communities, and the loss of Nocardioidaceae and Streptomyces in Actinobacteria might be one of the reasons of continuous cropping obstacles.

Checklists to the genera and species of Deltocephalinae are also given. A total of 49 genera with more than 100 species are now known from Pakistan. Two new synonyms are proposed, i.e., Cicadulina striata Ahmed, 1986 a junior synonym of Cicadulina chinai Ghauri, 1965, syn. nov. and Macrosteles parafalcatus Naveed & Zhang, 2018 a new junior synonym of Macrosteles indrina (Pruthi, 1930), syn. nov.

Microplastics (MPs) are globally distributed in aquatic environments, and become a growing threat to the ecosystem. It is urgently needed to develop effective technologies to remove MPs from water. In this review, we summarized progress in major technologies for the removal of MPs. Currently, multiple technologies for MPs removal have been developed including physical, chemical, and biological approaches. Filtration technology has a various removal efficiency, but a relatively high cost due to membrane fouling and replacing new filter membranes. The approach of adsorption and magnetic separation is a simple removal method; however, additive sorbents may cause secondary pollution. There is a similar problem of chemical residua in coagulation and oxidation treatment. In contrast, biodegradation and bioreactors are often of a low degradation efficiency. Then, existing removal technologies were comparatively analyzed in several aspects, especially practical efficiency and environmental impacts. Finally, green strategies for plastic abatement were proposed, including zero pollutant removal technology, integrated environmentally friendly approaches, recycling use of conventional plastic, and developing biodegradable plastic in the future.

DEK is associated with DNA replication and break repair, mRNA splicing, and transcriptional regulation, which had been studied in humans and mammals. The function of DEK in plants was poorly understood. In this study, GhDEK2D was identified in Gossypium hirsutum by genome-wide and post-translational modifications. GhDEK2D had been phosphorylated, acetylated and ubiquitylated under Verticillium dahliae (Vd) challenge. The GhDEK2D-silenced cotton decreased resistance against Vd. In GhDEK2D-silenced cotton plants, the reactive oxygen species was activated, the callose, xylogen, hypersensitive reaction (HR) and expression levels of defense-related genes were reduced. Homozygous overexpressing-GhDEK2D transgenic Arabidopsis lines were more resistant to Verticillium wilt (Vw). We propose that GhDEK2D was a potential molecular target for improving resistance to Vw in cotton.

ABSTRACT Verticillium dahliae is a soilborne fungus that causes destructive vascular wilt diseases in a wide range of plant hosts. In this study, we identified two M35 family metalloproteinases: VdM35-1 and VdASPF2, and investigated their function in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that VdM35-1 and VdASPF2 were located in the cell membrane, as secreted proteins depended on signal peptide, and two histidine residues (H) induced cell death and activated plant immune response. VdM35-1 depended on membrane receptor proteins NbBAK1 and NbSOBIR1 in the process of inducing cell death, while VdASPF2 did not depend on them. The deletion of VdM35-1 and VdASPF2 led to the decrease of sporulation and the slow shortening of mycelial branch growth, and the spore morphology of VdM35-1-deficient strain became malformed. In addition, ΔVdM35-1 and ΔVdASPF2 showed more sensitive to osmotic stress, SDS, Congo red (CR), and high temperature. In terms of the utilization of carbon sources, the knockout mutants exhibited decreased utilization of carbon sources, and the growth rates on the medium containing sucrose, starch, and pectin were lower than the wild type strain, with significantly limited growth, especially on galactose-containing medium. Furthermore, ΔVdM35-1 and ΔVdASPF2 showed a significant reduction in pathogenicity. Collectively, these results suggested that VdM35-1 and VdASPF2 were important multifunction factors in the pathogenicity of V. dahliae and relative to stress adaptation and activated plant immune response. IMPORTANCE Verticillium wilt, caused by the notorious fungal pathogen V. dahliae, is one of the main limiting factors for agricultural production. Metalloproteases played an important role in the pathogenic mechanism of pathogens. Our research found that M35 family metalloproteases VdM35-1 and VdASPF2 played an important role in the development, adaptability, and pathogenicity of V. dahliae, providing a new perspective for further understanding the molecular mechanism of virulence of fungal pathogens.

Introduction: Some epidemiological studies have revealed that vitamin D (VD) deficiency is closely linked with the prevalence of obesity, however, the role of VD in energy homeostasis is yet to be investigated, especially in central nervous system. Given that VD negatively regulates renin in adipose tissue, we hypothesized that central VD might play a potential role in energy homeostasis. Objectives: The present study aims to investigate the potential role of VD in energy homeostasis in the CNS and elaborate its underlying mechanisms. Methods: This study was conducted in Cyp27b1−/− mice, VD-treated and wild-type mice. After the intraventricular injection of renin or its inhibitors, the changes of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and its down-stream pathway as well as their effects on metabolic rate were examined. Results: The RAS activity was enhanced in Cyp27b1−/− mice, exhibiting a increased metabolic rate. Additionally, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), a RAS-mediated protein regulating energy metabolism in the hypothalamus, increased significantly in Cyp27b1−/− mice. While in VD-treated group, the RAS and sympathetic nerve activities were slightly inhibited, hence the reduced metabolic rate. Conclusion: Collectively, the present study demonstrates that the VD/vitamin D receptor (VDR) has a significant impact on energy homeostasis through the modulation of RAS activity in the hypothalamus, subsequently altering CRH expression and sympathetic nervous activity.

This article aims to answer the question that whether higher education would lead to happier life in China and tries to provide some explanations from the perspective of housing asset. Using data from four waves of China Household Finance Survey (CHFS), we find that higher education on average is significantly negatively correlated with people's happiness in urban China. Higher education tends to prevent people from achieving “extremely happy” lives; instead, it is more likely to lead to “acceptable” lives. Based on the realities of housing market in urban China, we find that housing asset plays the mediating role in the relationship between higher education and happiness. Specifically, years of schooling could evidently compress the years of being homeowners; as a result, highly educated people generally have more unpaid housing debts and bear more housing purchase costs due to the soaring housing prices. Meanwhile, higher education has negative effect on people's happiness in cities with relatively high housing prices, while this effect is insignificant in cities with relatively low housing prices. Moreover, the market-oriented housing reform that launched in 1998 has negative impact on highly educated people's happiness, since it has dramatically boosted housing prices and essentially changed housing distribution system for urban employees. Besides, we also find that Ph.D graduates are the relatively unhappiest people compared to bachelors or masters. Obviously, our findings have important policy implications for Chinese government to understand and resolve the “education-happiness paradox.”

Rhizosphere microbial communities are recognized as crucial products of intimate interactions between plant and soil, playing important roles in plant growth and health. Enhancing the understanding of this process is a promising way to promote the next green revolution by applying the multifunctional benefits coming with rhizosphere microbiomes. In this study, we propagated eight cotton genotypes (four upland cotton cultivars and four sea-land cotton cultivars) with varying levels of resistance to Verticillium dahliae in three distinct soil types. Amplicon sequencing was applied to profile both bacterial and fungal communities in the rhizosphere of cotton. The results revealed that soil origin was the primary factor causing divergence in rhizosphere microbial community, with plant genotype playing a secondary role. The Shannon and Simpson indices revealed no significant differences in the rhizosphere microbial communities of Gossypium barbadense and G. hirsutum. Soil origin accounted for 34.0 and 59.05% of the total variability in the PCA of the rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities, respectively, while plant genotypes within species only accounted for 1.1 to 6.6% of the total variability among microbial population. Similar results were observed in the Bray–Curtis indices. Interestingly, the relative abundance of Acidobacteria phylum in G. barbadense was greater in comparison with that of G. hirsutum. These findings suggested that soil origin and cotton genotype modulated microbiome assembly with soil predominantly shaping rhizosphere microbiome assembly, while host genotype slightly tuned this recruitment process by changing the abundance of specific microbial consortia.

Thermal discomfort body language has been shown to be a psychological representation of personnel’s particular thermal comfort. Individual thermal comfort differences are ignored in public building settings with random personnel flow. To solve this issue, we suggested a Bayesian group thermal dissatisfaction rate prediction model based on thermal discomfort body language expression and subsequently implemented intelligent indoor temperature and humidity control. The PMV-PPD model was utilized to represent the group’s overall thermal comfort and to create a prior distribution of thermal dissatisfaction rate. To acquire the dynamic distribution of temperature discomfort body language, data on thermal discomfort body language expression were collected in a real-world office setting experiment. Based on Bayesian theory, we used personalized thermal discomfort body language expressions to modify the group’s universal thermal comfort and realized the assessment of the thermal dissatisfaction rate by combining commonality and personalization. Finally, a deep reinforcement learning system was employed to achieve intelligent indoor temperature and humidity control. The results show that when commonality and personalized thermal comfort differences are combined, real-time prediction of thermal dissatisfaction rate has high prediction accuracy and good model performance, and the prediction model provides a reference basis for reasonable indoor temperature and humidity settings.

The genus Unio is one of the widespread freshwater bivalves. To date, its intra-generic phylogeny remains controversial and therefore the mitochondrial genome data is needed. Here, we report the complete mitogenome of Unio douglasiae MG that is distributed in the Chihe River, a branch of Huaihe River, East China. This mitochondrial genome is 15,764 base pair in total length. It consists of 37 genes: 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes (12S and 16S). The base composition was 38.38% for A, 26.48% for T, 23.17% for C, and 11.98% for G, showing an obvious bias of higher A + T content (64.86%) than the G + C content (35.14%). Phylogenetic analysis showed that U. douglasiae MG is clustered with other Unio and Nodularia mollusks in the family Unionidae. These results showed that combine with morphological techniques, the mitogenome can provide useful information to further understanding of the genetics, systematics, and conservation of this endangered species.

ObjectiveFrom January 23rd, 2020, lock-down measures were adopted in Wuhan, China to stop the spread of COVID-19. However, due to the approach of the Spring Festival and the nature of COVID-19, more than 6 million permanent and temporary residents of Wuhan (who were potential carriers or spreaders of the virus), left the city before the lock-down measures were implemented. This study aims to explore whether and how the population inflow from Wuhan city impacted residents' confidence in controlling COVID-19 outbreaks at the destination cities.Study design and settingBased on questionnaire data and migration big data, a multiple regression model was developed to quantify the impact of the population inflow from Wuhan city on the sense of confidence of residents in controlling the COVID-19 outbreak at the destination cities. Scenarios were considered that varied residents' expected month for controlling COVID-19 outbreak at the destination cities, residents' confidence in controlling COVID-19 outbreak at the destination cities, and the overall indicators for the sense of confidence of residents in controlling COVID-19. A marginal effect analysis was also conducted to calculate the probability of change in residents' confidence in controlling the COVID-19 outbreak with per unit change in the population inflow from Wuhan city.ResultsThe impact of population inflow from Wuhan city on residents' expected month for controlling COVID-19 outbreak at the destination cities was positive and significant at the 1% level, while that on residents' confidence in controlling COVID-19 at the destination cities was negative and significant at the 1% level. Robustness checks, which included modifying the sample range and replacing measurement indicators of the population inflow from Wuhan city, demonstrated these findings were robust and credible. When the population inflow from Wuhan city increased by one additional unit, the probabilities of the variables “February” and “March” decreased significantly by 0.1023 and 0.1602, respectively, while the probabilities of “April,” “May,” “June,” “July,” “before the end of 2020,” and “unknown” significantly increased by 0.0470, 0.0856, 0.0333, 0.0080, 0.0046, and 0.0840, respectively. Similarly, when the population inflow from Wuhan city increased by one additional unit, the probability of the variable “extremely confident” decreased by 0.1973. Furthermore, the probabilities of the variables “confident,” “neutral,” and “unconfident” significantly increased by 0.1392, 0.0224, and 0.0320, respectively.ConclusionThe population inflow from Wuhan city played a negative role in the sense of confidence of residents in controlling COVID-19 in the destination cities. The higher the population inflow from Wuhan city, the longer the residents' expected month for controlling COVID-19 outbreak at the destination cities became, and the weaker the residents' confidence in controlling the COVID-19 outbreak at the destination cities.
