16. The 06 February 2023 Turkiye earthquake and tsunami in Eastern Mediterranean, performance of coastal structures in the Gulf of Iskenderun

Abstract

The earthquake (Mw=7.7) on 06 February 2023 (01:17 UTC) in Kahramanmaras, Turkiye caused a tsunami in the Eastern Mediterranean despite its strike-slip characteristic and epicenter (37.1123N 37.1195E) ~90 km inland. The earthquake ruptured at a shallow depth (~5) striking about NE-SW on the East Anatolian fault zone and having a devastating impact in southeastern Türkiye. Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Center (KOERI), which is one of the Tsunami Service Providers of the UNESCO IOC NEAMTWS issued four tsunami messages with a tsunami warning 15 min after the earthquake with expected tsunami amplitudes more than 0.5 m. The generated tsunami was recorded at four tide gauge stations, (Iskenderun-Arsuz, Erdemli, Gazimagusa (Famagusta), and Girne (Kerinya) in the Eastern Mediterranean. The recorded water level fluctuations were analyzed after detiding to extract the arrival time of the wave and its profile. For the assessment of the 06 February 2023 tsunami, numerical simulations were performed using the tsunami numerical model NAMI DANCE to understand the generation mechanism and possible location. It is important to identify those features for future preparedness in the area. This small-scale tsunami has been an important reminder in this regard and a test for the effective working of the early warning system. A field survey was also performed on 11-13 February 2023 to investigate the tsunami traces, conduct eyewitness interviews and coastal structure performance evaluation. The simulations are repeated using the survey findings and the modeling results are compared with the measurements. Abstract

This paper gives a state-of-the-art review of seismic-induced liquefaction with special reference to marine structures. The paper is organized in seven sections: (1) introduction; (2) seismic-induced liquefaction in which a general account of soil liquefaction is presented; (3) existing codes/guidelines regarding seismic-induced liquefaction and its implications for marine structures; (4) review of the Japanese experience, giving a brief history of earthquakes and design codes, describing the current design code/standard for port and harbor facilities including counter measures and remediation; (5) review of the liquefaction damage inflicted on marine structures in the 1999 Turkey Kocaeli Earthquake, including recommendations which draw on the lessons learned; (6) assessment of postliquefaction ground deformation (more specifically of lateral ground spreading); and (7) tsunamis and their impact. The present paper and the existing guidelines (CEN, ASCE, and PIANC) form a complementary source of information on earthquake-induced liquefaction with special reference to its impact on marine structures. 49. Revised Methuva Method For Assessment Of Tsunami Human Vulnerability Of Bakirkoy District, Istanbul

Abstract

Among the coastal districts of mega city Istanbul, Bakirkoy is one of the most critical one with the importance of air and marine transportation and presence of many other coastal facilities and structures that are prone to suffer from marine hazards. In the history, the Sea of Marmara has experienced numerous earthquake and landslide events and associated tsunamis. Therefore, tsunami risk assessment is essential for all coastal districts of Istanbul, including Bakirkoy district. In this study, a further developed methodology for tsunami human vulnerability and risk assessment Metropolitan Tsunami Human Vulnerability Assessment (MeTHuVA) is applied for Bakirkoy district of Istanbul, considering earthquake generated tsunamis. High-resolution tsunami hazard analysis is performed with the integration of coastal inundation computation with tsunami numerical tool NAMI DANCE and tsunami human vulnerability assessment with GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis methods (MCDA). Using analytical hierarchy process method of MCDA, a hierarchical structure is established, composed of two main elements of tsunami human vulnerability: Vulnerability at Location and Evacuation Resilience. Tsunami risk assessment for Bakirkoy district is calculated by integrating result of hazard and vulnerability assessments with a risk relation that includes a parameter (n), which represents the preparedness and awareness level of the community. Tsunami simulations revealed that the maximum inundation distance is over 350 m on land and water penetrates almost 1700 m along Ayamama stream. Inundation is observed in eleven neighborhoods of Bakirkoy district. In the inundation zone, maximum flow depth is found to be over 5.7 m. The inundated area forms 4.2% of whole Bakirkoy district, and 62 buildings are located in the inundation zone. Hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment results for different neighborhoods of Bakirkoy district are presented and discussed.
