Abstract Hydrogenation is a versatile chemical process with significant applications in various industries, including food production, petrochemical refining, pharmaceuticals, and hydrogen carriers/safety. Traditional hydrogenation of aromatics, hindered by the stable π-conjugated phenyl ring structures, typically requires high temperatures and pressures, making ambient hydrogenation a grand challenge. Herein, we introduce a PdPtRuCuNi high entropy alloy (HEA) nanocatalyst, achieving an exceptional 100% hydrogenation of carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds, including alkynyl and phenyl groups, in solid 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (DEB) at 25 °C under ≤1 bar H2 and solventless condition. This results in a threefold higher hydrogen uptake for DEB-contained composites compared to conventional Pd catalysts, which can only hydrogenate the alkynyl groups with a ~ 27% conversion of DEB. Our experimental results, complemented by theoretical calculations, reveal that PdPtRu alloy is highly active and crucial in enabling the hydrogenation of phenyl groups, while all five elements work synergistically to regulate the reaction rate. Remarkably, this newly developed catalyst also achieves nearly 100% reactivity for ambient hydrogenation of a broad range of aromatics, suggesting its universal effectiveness. Our research uncovers a novel material platform and catalyst design principle for efficient and general hydrogenation. The multi-element synergy in HEA also promises unique catalytic behaviors beyond hydrogenation applications.

Abstract The long-term erosion of rock by solution can induce a series of karst problems. Therefore, this study focused on limestone and conducted dynamic dissolution experiments under deionized water and CO2 solution conditions to study the deterioration mechanism of limestone under nonequilibrium conditions. The results showed that the degree of degradation of the mechanical properties of the samples in a CO2 solution was obviously greater. In a deionized water environment, the degradation of the mechanical properties of the sample is mainly controlled by the physical softening action of the solution. In the CO2 solution environment, the degradation process can be divided into two stages. In the early stage of the experiment (10 days to 20 days), the degradation of mechanical properties of the sample is also controlled by the physical softening action of the solution. With increasing soaking time, the main rock-forming minerals of limestone gradually react with the CO2 solution, the degradation of the sample is controlled mainly by the chemical corrosion of the CO2 solution, and its degradation rate is much greater than that of physical softening. The results can be used as a reference for assessing the long-term stability of underground engineering in limestone karst development areas.

Sandbars are commonly encountered in coastal environments, acting as natural protections during storm events. However, the sandbar response to waves and possible shear failure is poorly understood. In this research, a two–dimensional numerical model is settled to simulate the wave-induced sandbar soil dynamics and instability mechanism. The model, which is based upon the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and Biot’s consolidation theory, is validated using available experiments. Parametric studies are then conducted to appraise the impact of the wave parameters and soil properties on soil dynamics. Results indicate that the vertical distribution of the maximum vertical effective stress in the sandbar is different from that in the flat seabed, which decreases rapidly along the soil depth and then increases gradually. The impact of soil permeability and saturation on the vertical effective stress distribution around the sandbar also differ from that in the flat seabed. Unlike the flat seabed, the vertical distribution of shear stress in the sandbar increases with an increasing wave period. The sandbar soil shear failure potential is discussed based upon the Mohr–Coulomb criterion. Results show that the range of shear failure around the sandbar is wider and the depth is deeper when the wave trough arrives.

A high-precision, complex, three-dimensional (3D) geological model can directly express the attributes of stratum thickness, geological structure, lithology and spatial form, which can provide a reliable basis for the development and utilization of underground space and planning decisions. However, it is difficult to perform accurate modelling due to the lack of basic data. As such, this paper proposes coupling a machine learning algorithm (K-nearest neighbour (KNN)) with the kriging algorithm to construct the topological relationship between the Delaunay triangle and the Thiessen polygon in order to perform the simulation and prediction of virtual drilling. Based on KNN, support vector machine (SVM) and neural network algorithms as well as the virtual borehole encryption data, data standardization processing and analysis are carried out. Through model verification, algorithm optimization is realized, and the optimal modelling method is explored. The results show that the fine KNN algorithm improved by Bayesian optimization can effectively improve the modelling accuracy through 0.1-m encryption, standardization processing and 5-fold cross-validation. Stratum modelling combined with the fine KNN and kriging algorithms can obtain a more accurate modelling without adding virtual boreholes. The improved levels of upper and lower hybrid modelling with an appropriate number of profile boreholes can also effectively optimize model accuracy. Both modelling accuracy and efficiency can be significantly improved by using Delaunay triangles and Thiessen polygons with virtual boreholes. Stratum modelling can effectively express the geological pinch-out in areas with adequate degrees of stratification, and hybrid modelling performs well in irregular geological bodies such as karsts and lenses.

Expansins (EXPs) loosen plant cell walls and are involved in diverse developmental processes through modifying cell-walls; however, little is known about the role of PpEXPs in peach fruit. In this study, 26 PpEXP genes were identified in the peach genome and grouped into four subfamilies, with 20 PpEXPAs, three PpEXPBs, one PpEXPLA and two PpEXPLBs. The 26 PpEXPs were mapped on eight chromosomes. The primary mode of gene duplication of the PpEXPs was dispersed gene duplication (DSD, 50%). Notably, cis-elements involved in light responsiveness and MeJA-responsiveness were detected in the promoter regions of all PpEXPs, while ethylene responsive elements were observed in 12 PpEXPs. Transcript profiling of PpEXPs in the peach fruit varieties of MF (melting), NMF (non-melting) and SH (stony hard) at different stages showed that PpEXPs displayed distinct expression patterns. Among the 26 PpEXPs, 15 PpEXPs were expressed in the fruit. Combining the expressing patterns of PpEXPs in fruits with different flesh textures, PpEXPA7, PpEXPA13 and PpEXPA15 were selected as candidate genes, as they were highly consistent with the patterns of previous reported key genes (PpPGM, PpPGF and PpYUC11) in regard to peach fruit texture. The genes with different expression patterns between MF and NMF were divided into 16 modules, of which one module, with pink and midnightblue, negatively correlated with the phenotype of fruit firmness and was identified as PpEXPA1 and PpEXPA7, while the other module was identified as PpERF in the pink module, which might potentially effect fruit texture development by regulating PpEXPs. These results provide a foundation for the functional characterization of PpEXPs in peach.

Secondary growth of the woody tree stem is governed by meristematic cell division and differentiation in the vascular cambium. Multiple hormonal signals and endogenous developmental programs regulate vascular cambium activity. Brassinosteroids (BRs) significantly promote secondary stem growth and wood formation in poplar trees. However, the underlying regulatory mechanisms of BRs within the vascular tissue remain unclear. Genetic and anatomical approaches were used here to elucidate the role of PagDET2, the rate-limiting enzyme for BRs biosynthesis, in regulating secondary vascular cambium activity in Populus. This study showed that the elevated endogenous castasterone (CS) levels in tree stems through overexpressing PagDET2 could enhance cambium meristem cell activity and xylem (XY) differentiation to promote secondary stem growth. RNA-seq analysis revealed that genes involved in BRs response, vascular cambium cell division, XY differentiation, and secondary cell wall synthesis were up-regulated.

This paper presents the results from a numerical simulation study to investigate wave trapping by a series of trapezoidal porous submerged breakwaters near a vertical breakwater, as well as the seabed response around the vertical breakwater. An integrated model, based on the volume-averaged Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (VARANS) equations is developed to simulate the flow field, while the dynamic Biot’s equations are used for simulating the wave-induced seabed response. The reflection of the wave energy over the submerged breakwaters, caused by the vertical breakwater, can be reserved, indicating that the existence of the submerged breakwaters in the front of the vertical breakwater can either provide shelter or worsen the hazards to the vertical breakwater. Numerical examples show two different modes under the Fabry–Pérot (F–P) resonance condition of the wave transformation, namely the wave reflection (Mode 1) and the wave trapping (Mode 2). The distance between the submerged breakwaters and the vertical breakwater, is a key parameter dominating the local hydrodynamic process and the resultant dynamic stresses around the vertical breakwater. The numerical results indicated that more submerged breakwaters and a higher porosity of submerged breakwaters will obviously dissipate more wave energy, and hence induce a smaller wave force on the rear vertical breakwater and liquefaction area around the vertical breakwater.

It is difficult to improve the efficacy of oncolytic virotherapy due to immune system responses and limited understanding of population dynamics. Here the authors use synthetic biology gene circuits to control adenoviral replication and release of immunomodulators in hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

Waves and currents coexist widely in the ocean, and the interaction of waves and currents plays an important role in the instability of submarine pipelines. So far, most studies have concentrated on discussing the dynamic reaction within the seabed around a pipeline under pure wave action, monotypic sediment, and an exposed or fully buried condition. In this study, the effect of current characteristics (e.g., current velocity and propagation direction) and backfilling conditions (e.g., backfill depth and sand property) on the dynamic response around the submarine pipeline is investigated by conducting laboratory experiments. Pipeline was buried in the excavated trench using three types of sand with the median size of 0.150 mm, 0.300 mm and 0.045 mm, respectively. Five relative backfilled depths, with the ratios of backfill depth over the pipeline diameter being 0, 1/2, 1, 3/2 and 2, were tested. The excess pore pressure was measured simultaneously by using the pore pressure sensors installed around the pipeline surface and beneath the pipeline. Results show that both the pore pressure amplitude and its descent rate gradually decrease with an increasing backfill depth, which decreases the soil liquefaction potential. Under the co-current actions, the decrease rate of the pore pressure along the vertical direction increases with an increasing current velocity. However, the increased current velocity leads to a decrease of the attenuation rate under the counter-current actions compared with the pure wave actions, and the counter-current effect on the pore pressure within the seabed is greater than the co-current. The results indicate that the dynamic response around the pipeline in coarse sand is close to that without the backfill scenario, even if the backfill depth reaches up to two times that of the pipeline diameter. It is found that the larger the median particle size of backfill sand, the smaller the impact on pore pressure within the seabed beneath the pipeline.

Horizontal-axis tidal turbines (HATTs) have an acknowledged potential to extract a considerable amount of clean renewable energy from ocean tides. Among these, bidirectional HATTs (BHATTs) with bidirectional hydrofoils are thought to have higher economy than general HATTs. To improve the BHATTs, this study systemically investigated the influence of swept blades on the performance and hydrodynamics of the BHATT. A three-dimensional (3D) numerical model based on OpenFOAM was adopted to simulate a full-scale BHATT. The numerical framework was validated using two well-known experiments, and the mesh convergence was taken into consideration. The results indicate that the forward and backward swept blades have a limited impact on the performance and hydrodynamics of the BHATT. The upstream swept blade leads to a 4.3% decrease in the load on the rotor at design tip speed ratio (TSR) with a 2.0% decrease in the power. The BHATT with a downstream swept blade can produce 3.2% more energy at TSR = 6. Moreover, the swept blades have the opposite effect on the power of the BHATT at TSR = 6 and TSR = 9.

The use of synthetic chromosomes and the recombinase-based SCRaMbLE system could enable rapid strain evolution through massive chromosome rearrangements. Here the authors present ReSCuES, which uses auxotrophic markers to rapidly identify yeast with rearrangements for strain engineering.

In nearshore regions, bidirectional tidal flow is the main hydrodynamic factor, which induces local scour around submarine pipelines. So far, most studies on scour around submarine pipelines only consider the action of unidirectional, steady currents and little attention has been paid to the situation of bidirectional tidal currents. To deeply understand scour characteristics and produce a more accurate prediction method in bidirectional tidal currents for engineering application, a series of laboratory scale experiments were conducted in a bidirectional current flume. The experiments were carried out at a length scale of 1:20 and the tidal currents were scaled with field measurements from Cezhen pipeline in Hangzhou Bay, China. The experimental results showed that under bidirectional tidal currents, the scour depth increased significantly during the first half of the tidal cycle and it only increased slightly when the flow of the tidal velocity was near maximum flood or ebb in the following tidal cycle. Compared with scour under a unidirectional steady current, the scour profile under a bidirectional tidal current was more symmetrical, and the scour depth in a bidirectional tidal current was on average 80% of that under a unidirectional, steady current based on maximum peak velocity. Based on previous research and the present experimental data, a more accurate fitted equation to predict the tidally induced live-bed scour depth around submarine pipelines was proposed and has been verified using field data from the Cezhen pipeline.

The mononuclear nickel title complex (acetonitrile-κN){N-benzyl-N,N′,N′-tris[(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)methyl]ethane-1,2-diamine}nickel(II) bis(tetrafluoridoborate), [Ni(C30H35N5)(CH3CN)](BF4)2, was prepared from the reaction of Ni(BF4)2·6H2O with N-benzyl-N,N′,N′-tris[(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)methyl]ethane-1,2-diamine (bztmpen) in acetonitrile at room temperature. With an open site occupied by the acetonitrile molecule, the nickel(II) atom is chelated by five N-atom sites from the ligand and one N atom from the ligand, showing an overall octahedral coordination environment. Compared with analogues where the 6–methyl substituent is absent, the bond length around the Ni2+ cation are evidently longer. Upon reductive dissociation of the acetronitrile molecule, the title complex has an open site for a catalytic reaction. The title complex has two redox couples at −1.50 and −1.80 V (versus Fc+/0) based on nickel. The F atoms of the two BF4− counter-anions are split into two groups and the occupancy ratios refined to 0.611 (18):0.389 (18) and 0.71 (2):0.29 (2).

The mononuclear copper title complex {N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis[(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)methyl]ethane-1,2-diamine-κ6N}copper(II) bis(tetrafluoridoborate), [Cu(C30H36N6)](BF4)2, is conveniently prepared from the reaction of Cu(BF4)2·6H2O with N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis[(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)methyl]ethane-1,2-diamine (tmpen) in acetonitrile at room temperature in air. The complex shows a distorted octahedral environment around the CuII cation (site symmetry 2) and adopts the centrosymmetric space group C2/c. The presence of the 6-methyl substituent hinders the approach of the pyridine group to the CuII core. The bond lengths about the CuII atom are significantly longer than those of analogues without the 6-methyl substituents.

A diesel engine is a typical dynamic system. In this paper, a dynamics method is proposed to establish the Hamiltonian model of the diesel engine, which solves the main difficulty of constructing a Hamiltonian function under the multi-field coupling condition. Furthermore, the control method of Hamiltonian model structure modification is introduced to study the control of a diesel engine. By means of the principle of energy-shaping and Hamiltonian model structure modification theories, the modified energy function is constructed, which is proved to be a quasi-Lyapunov function of the closed-loop system. Finally, the control laws are derived, and the simulations are carried out. The study reveals the dynamic mechanism of diesel engine operation and control and provides a new way to research the modeling and control of a diesel engine system.

A sudden dam failure is usually simulated by the rapid removal of a gate in laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The gate-opening time is often determined according to the Lauber and Hager instantaneous collapse criterion (referred to as the Lauber–Hager criterion), which is established for a rectangular open channel with a dry bed. However, this criterion is not suitable for non-rectangular channels or initial wet-bed conditions. In this study, the effect of the gate-opening time on the wave evolution is investigated by using the large eddy simulation (LES) model. The instantaneous dam-break, namely, a dam-break without a gate, is simulated for comparison. A gate-opening criterion for generating dam-break flow in a non-rectangular wet-bed channel is proposed in this study, which can be used as an extension of the Lauber–Hager criterion and provides a more comprehensive and reasonable estimate of the gate opening time.

The interaction between wave and offshore deposits is of great importance for the foundation design of marine installations. However, most previous investigations have been limited to connecting separated wave and seabed sub-models with an individual interface program that transfers loads from the wave model to the seabed model. This research presents a two-dimensional coupled approach to study both wave and seabed processes simultaneously in the same FEM (finite element method) program (COMSOL Multiphysics). In the present model, the progressive wave is generated using a momentum source maker combined with a steady current, while the seabed response is applied with the poro-elastoplastic theory. The information between the flow domain and soil deposits is strongly shared, leading to a comprehensive investigation of wave-seabed interaction. Several cases have been simulated to test the wave generation capability and to validate the soil model. The numerical results present fairly good predictions of wave generation and pore pressure within the seabed, indicating that the present coupled model is a sufficient numerical tool for estimation of wave-induced pore pressure.
