Abstract

Large optical anisotropy observed in a broad spectral range is of paramount importance for efficient light manipulation in countless devices. Although a giant anisotropy was recently observed in the mid-infrared wavelength range, for visible and near-infrared spectral intervals, the problem remains acute with the highest reported birefringence values of 0.8 in BaTiS3 and h-BN crystals. This inspired an intensive search for giant optical anisotropy among natural and artificial materials. Here, we demonstrate that layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) provide an answer to this quest owing to their fundamental differences between intralayer strong covalent bonding and weak interlayer van der Walls interaction. To do this, we carried out a correlative far- and near-field characterization validated by first-principle calculations that reveals an unprecedented birefringence of 1.5 in the infrared and 3 in the visible light for MoS2. Our findings demonstrate that this outstanding anisotropy allows for tackling the diffraction limit enabling an avenue for on-chip next-generation photonics., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The development of technology for integrating optical metaresonators with two-dimensional and layered van der Waals (vdW) materials opens up broad prospects for the creation of subdiffraction concentrators of electromagnetic energy, surface-emitting lasers, laser displays, and highly efficient nonlinear converters. In this work, we develop a straightforward strategy for the design and fabrication of surface-emitting laser devices based on few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides placed on the dielectric metasurfaces in the regime of quasi-trapped mode excitation. We optimize the parameters of MoTe2 flake and Si metasurface to achieve a positive feedback and to observe the lasing, resulting from their integration, with the predicted characteristics. Promising potential for the development of vdW-metalaser platform is associated with the possibility of simple polarization control of lasing regimes by employing the features of the bianisotropic response of the metasurface's building blocks. 8. Laser Etching of Quasi-1D TiS3 Nanoribbons by Raman Spectrophotometer.

Abstract

Quasi one-dimensional materials are technologically very important due to their extraordinary properties. The properties are enhanced when these materials are exfoliated into single or few layers. In this work, we present the laser etching of TiS3 nanoribbons synthesized by chemical vapor transport technique. The experiments were carried out using the TiS3 nanoribbons with thicknesses ranging from 100 to 150 nm. These nanoribbons were transferred on a silicon substrate via mechanical exfoliation technique prior to the laser treatment for the etching process followed. The resulting etching depth was in the range of 20–25 nm with no oxidation. Through the experiments, it was found that the etching depth was independent of the initial thickness of the nanoribbons, which suggests that if samples had a smaller initial thickness, a monolayer can be obtained. We also observed significant (up to 3–4 nm) improvement of the surface roughness of the etched samples, which makes the laser etching technique promising for the development of flexible, efficient, and reliable optoelectronic devices. 9. Near-field characterization of ultra-thin metal films

Abstract

Ultra-thin metal films will form the basis of next-generation optoelectronics. However, characterization of their performance requires consideration of nanocrystalline structure and analysis of local optical and electrical properties. In present study, we use scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) for nanoscale probing of optical conductivity of ultrathin metal films. We obtained surface maps of scattered near-field signal for gold films grown on monolayer graphene and MoS2 films as well as on a pure Si/SiO2 substrate. These results clearly demonstrate the difference in generated optical responses and can be used in the development of various devices utilizing ultrathin metal films.

Abstract

Fabrication of continuous ultra-thin (2 can be superior to more conventional adhesion/seeding layers as an optical substrate for realizing ultra-thin gold films. Our results show that optical losses in ultrathin gold films increase with decreasing thickness due to the fine-grained structure and the presence of a small number of voids, however, they exhibit metallic properties down to a thickness of 3-4 nm.

In present study, we develop an effective and universal technique for retrieving dispersion of bulk and monolayer TMDs from spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements. The basis of the method is excitonic nature of the dispersion. In addition, we demonstrate beneficial influence of annealing on optical properties of MoS2.

Abstract

We report on the experimental observation of the curved plasmonic beam, a plasmonic hook (PH), for surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves. The SPP PH effect could be obtained with a cuboid particle with broken shape symmetry fabricated with a relatively simple routine. This has a pronounced difference with fabrication of the structure for generation of the Airy SPPs, which require complex techniques to compensate the wave vector mismatch. We confirmed the existence of SPP PH by amplitude scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy. The experimental results agree well with our predictions. Importantly, the SPP PH demonstrates the smallest curvature of the beam ever recorded for SPPs compared to that for the Airy-family plasmonic beams, which potentially can strongly impact many useful applications from nanoparticle manipulation to nanoscale bio-sensing.

Abstract

In this work, we carried out a complex analysis of gold films near the percolation threshold. It was determined how graphene influences the growth of films and which benefits it provides to the substrates for their application in SERS. Gold films were deposited on two types of substrates by electron-beam evaporation and the thickness of these films ranged from 3 to 10 nm. The first type of substrate was silicon with a thin layer of silicon oxide and the second type was the same substrate, with a single layer CVD graphene. The characterization of films was carried out using such experimental methods as scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), ellipsometry and sheet resistance measurements. SERS measurements of the dye Crystal Violet showed sufficiently large enhancement factor (EF) and also graphene induced photoluminescence quenching was demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report on two approaches aimed at increasing the performance of a photoconductive antenna (PCA) due to enhanced optical light confinement in a PCA's gap. The first refers to the use of a high-aspect ratio metal grating maintaining plasmonic guided modes while the second implies an asymmetric dielectric particle combined with a prism on a metal surface to provide a sub-wavelength focusing of a laser beam. We reached a 3000-fold increase in the emitted THz power and a 25-fold THz photocurrent enhancement in a plasmon-assisted PCA; the further increase in both parameters might be reached by optimizing the geometry of the grating. We propose a new curved beam - the photonic hook plasmon that can be realized using the in-plane focusing of the surface plasmon-polariton wave through a dielectric particle. We demonstrate a potential possibility to reach predominantly a sub-wavelength focused and high-intensive beam obtained from the opposite side of the dielectric particle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the present study, we report on dispersion function over a spectral range of 300 – 1700 nm (i.e. 0.73 – 4.13eV) for CVD-grown full area coverage monolayer WS2 and WSe2 films on SiO2/Si substrates. The result is obtained via the analysis of spectroscopic ellipsometry spectra by virtue of Tauc-Lorentz oscillators, which takes into account that absorption of these materials are attributed to the formation of the excitons.
