The composition of perennially frozen deposits holds information on the palaeo-environment during and following deposition. In this study, we investigate late Pleistocene permafrost at the western coast of the Buor Khaya Peninsula in the south-central Laptev Sea (Siberia), namely the prominent eastern Siberian Yedoma Ice Complex (IC). Two Yedoma IC exposures and one drill core were studied for cryolithological (i.e. ice and sediment features), geochemical, and geochronological parameters. Borehole temperatures were measured for 3 years to capture the current thermal state of permafrost. The studied sequences were composed of ice-oversaturated silts and fine-grained sands with considerable amounts of organic matter (0.2 to 24 wt %). Syngenetic ice wedges intersect the frozen deposits. The deposition of the Yedoma IC, as revealed by radiocarbon dates of sedimentary organic matter, took place between 54.1 and 30.1 kyr BP. Continued Yedoma IC deposition until about 14.7 kyr BP is shown by dates from organic matter preserved in ice-wedge ice. For the lowermost and oldest Yedoma IC part, infrared-stimulated luminescence dates on feldspar show deposition ages between 51.1 +/- 4.9 and 44.2 +/- 3.6 kyr BP. End-member modelling was applied to grain-size-distribution data to determined sedimentation processes during Yedoma IC formation. Three to five robust end-members were detected within Yedoma IC deposits, which we interpret as different modes of primary and reworked unconfined alluvial slope and fan deposition as well as of localized eolian and fluvial sediment, which is overprinted by in situ frost weathering. The cryolithological inventory of the Yedoma IC preserved on the Buor Khaya Peninsula is closely related to the results of other IC studies, for example, to the west on the Bykovsky Peninsula, where formation time (mainly during the late Pleistocene marine isotope stages (MIS) 3 interstadial) and formation conditions were similar. Observations of coastline retreat using contemporary very high resolution satellite and historical aerial imagery were compared to measurements of open water fraction, summer air temperature, and wind. We analysed seasonal and interannual variations of thawing-induced cliff top retreat (thermo-denudation) and marine abrasion (thermo-abrasion) on Muostakh Island in the southern central Laptev Sea. Geomorphometric analysis revealed that total ground ice content on Muostakh is made up of equal amounts of intrasedimentary and macro ground ice and sums up to 87%, rendering the island particularly susceptible to erosion along the coast, resulting in land loss. Based on topographic reference measurements during field campaigns, we generated digital elevation models using stereophotogrammetry, in order to block-adjust and orthorectify aerial photographs from 1951 and GeoEye, QuickBird, WorldView-1, and WorldView-2 imagery from 2010 to 2013 for change detection. Using sea ice concentration data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) and air temperature time series from nearby Tiksi, we calculated the seasonal duration available for thermo-abrasion, expressed as open water days, and for thermo-denudation, based on the number of days with positive mean daily temperatures. Seasonal dynamics of cliff top retreat revealed rapid thermo-denudation rates of −10.2 ± 4.5 m a−1 in mid-summer and thermo-abrasion rates along the coastline of −3.4 ± 2.7 m a−1 on average during the 2010–2013 observation period, currently almost twice as rapid as the mean rate of −1.8 ± 1.3 m a−1 since 1951. Our results showed a close relationship between mean summer air temperature and coastal thermo-erosion rates, in agreement with observations made for various permafrost coastlines different to the East Siberian Ice Complex coasts elsewhere in the Arctic. An assemblage of Pleistocene faunal remains was collected by a field party of «Eastern Laptev Sea - Buor Khaya Peninsula» expedition (Strauss et al., 2011) from Orto-Stan River, Buor-Khaya Peninsula. The bones were sampled from a concentration located next to the edge of a thermokast lake (N 71° 36,120' E 132° 15,597'). Two mammoth bones with human impact and a horse bone were dated directly. The site age is estimated at 27,000 – 27,600 14C yrs BP, which corresponds to the end of MIS 3, or slightly older if the horse bone belongs to the same level. These dates indicate that the mammoth remains were accumulating for at least 500 years. Mammoth remains constitute two thirds of the yield. There are at least five mammoth individuals, both adults and juveniles. Two pelvic bones have identical blind holes near the coxofemoral articulation on the bones’ caudal sides., Bone cracks caused by such damage loosened the joint and facilitated disarticulation during the butchering process. Multiple lines engraved by sharp lithic tool are visible on caudal surface of a right pelvic bone. Lines are 1.2-2 mm wide and ~0.7 mm deep. Except for the butchery marks, the Buor-Khaya/Orto-Stan mammoth site provides evidence for killing these animals. Finds from Yana RHS site (Nikolskiy, Pitulko, 2013) suggest that people applied a «spear-fall» hunting strategy, similar to that practiced by African hunter-gatherers. For example, Kulik (1971) describes a specific coup de grâce method practiced by Pygmies to cut important arteries and cause mortal bleeding by trusting a spear into the elephant’s trunk . The position of the cut-marks on the edge of the nasal opening of the mammoth skull fragments at the Buor-Khaya/Orto-Stan, i.e. near the trunk, suggests that they were caused by the same action.
