Abstract

A new measurement of the parity violating asymmetry in elastic electron scattering on hydrogen at backward angles and at a four momentum transfer of Q^2=0.22 (GeV/c)^2 is reported here. The measured asymmetry is A_LR=(-17.23 +- 0.82_stat +-0.89_syst) ppm. The Standard Model prediction assuming no strangeness is A_0=(-15.87 +- 1.22) ppm. In combination with previous results from measurements at forward angles, it it possible to disentangle for the first time the strange electric and magnetic form factors at this momentum transfer, G_E^s(0.22)=0.050 +- 0.038 +- 0.019 and G_M^s(0.22)=-0.14 +- 0.11 +- 0.11., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the parity violating asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons off unpolarized protons with the A4 apparatus at MAMI in Mainz at a four momentum transfer value of $Q^2$ = \Qsquare (GeV/c)$^2$ and at a forward electron scattering angle of 30$^\circ < \theta_e < 40^\circ$. The measured asymmetry is $A_{LR}(\vec{e}p)$ = (\Aphys $\pm$ \Deltastat$_{stat}$ $\pm$ \Deltasyst$_{syst}$) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$. The expectation from the Standard Model assuming no strangeness contribution to the vector current is A$_0$ = (\Azero $\pm$ \DeltaAzero) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$. We have improved the statistical accuracy by a factor of 3 as compared to our previous measurements at a higher $Q^2$. We have extracted the strangeness contribution to the electromagnetic form factors from our data to be $G_E^s$ + \FakGMs $G_M^s$ = \GEsGMs $\pm $ \DeltaGEsGMs at $Q^2$ = \Qsquare (GeV/c)$^2$. As in our previous measurement at higher momentum transfer for $G_E^s$ + 0.230 $G_M^s$, we again find the value for $G_E^s$ + \FakGMs $G_M^s$ to be positive, this time at an improved significance level of 2 $\sigma$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Artemisia herba-alba is widely used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes, bronchitis, diarrhoea, hypertension and neuralgias. The aim of this study is to investigate the essential oil extracted from the aerial part of this plant and at two different harvest periods (May and December 2012) to evaluate a possible cytotoxic and anti-angiogenic activity. At first the Artemisia herba-alba essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Then the HUVECs (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) were treated with various concentrations of essential oil (10, 20, 40 and 80 µl). We have noted a chemical variation of the essential oils extracted from the aerial parts of Artemisia Herba-alba in relation to seasonal changes. The essential oils extracted from the plants collected in May (seeds stage) and those of December (floral stage) showed a dose- and time-dependent inhibitory effect on cell viability. The essential oil of the floral stage showed more cytotoxic effect on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) than those of the seeds stage which displayed potent anti-angiogenic activity; it did not cause cytotoxicity of HUVECs but disrupted endothelial tube formation. The variation on the essential oils chemical composition due to the harvest period has different effects on HUVEC. The essential oil from the seeds showed an anti-angiogenic activity without a cytotoxic effect which is very important feature in the research of anti-angiogenic agents.

42. Developments and Tests of a 700 MHz Cryomodule for the Superconducting Linac of MYRRHA

Abstract

The MYRRHA projects aims at the construction of an Accelerator Driven System demonstrator. The criticality will be sustained by an external spallation neutron flux; produced thanks to a 600 MeV high intensity proton beam. This beam will be delivered by a superconducting linac which must fulfil very stringent reliability requirements. To carry out “real scale” reliability-oriented experiments a 700 MHz Cryomodule was developed. Several tests were performed to commission the experimental set-up. We review here the obtained results and the lessons learnt by operating this module, as well as the on-going developments.
