El objetivo del estudio fue crear un programa de entrenamiento de la musculatura cervical profunda, para orientar a los profesionales de la actividad física y del deporte en el trabajo con ella. Hay muy pocas pautas relacionadas con el trabajo de ésta, al mismo tiempo que la literatura científica nos muestra su estrecha relación con el dolor cervical. Por ello, se utilizan las investigaciones previas para crear un programa de entrenamiento centrado en la musculatura cervical profunda. Así como sus correspondientes métodos de evaluación, entre los que se incluye un nuevo test de extensión cervical con el que se pretende conseguir una valoración de la fuerza y la resistencia más adecuada. Finalmente se presenta un estudio de caso de una mujer sin dolor cervical, pero con factores de riesgo asociados, que sigue el programa como forma de prevención, mostrando un claro progreso tras la finalización de este, The objective of the study was to create a training program for deep cervical muscles and help physical activity and sports professionals when exercising them. El objetivo de este estudio fue detectar en qué medida afecta la actividad física y el hábito tabáquico en estudiantes de Enseñanza Secundaria. Se estudiaron 168 adolescentes no fumadores y fumadores recién iniciados. Se midieron peso, talla, presión arterial, frecuencia cardíaca, actividad física, fuerza, flexibilidad y resistencia y una prueba espirométrica. Tanto en chicas y chicos fumadores, se evidenciaron peores resultados en la mayoría de los parámetros espirométricos (FEV1, FEF25-75%, FVC) y un envejecimiento prematuro del pulmón, más acentuado en chicas. La actividad físico-deportiva moderada se asocia a adolescentes que menos fuman y tienen más facilidad para abandonar el hábito tabáquico, The aim of the study was to detect how physical education and smoking habits affect secondary school students, 168 non smokers and newly initiated were studied. Weight, height, heart rate, blood pressure, physical activity, strength, flexibility and endurance, and spirometric tests were analyzed. In both, female and male smokers, obtained worse results in the mayority of spirometric parameters (FEV1, FEF25-75%, FVC) and premature lung ageing, more pointed in females. El objetivo de este estudio es comprobar si el estilo de natación en el que están especializados los nadadores, influye sobre la extensibilidad isquiosural de los deportistas que han participado en esta investigación. El test empleado para este trabajo es el test “sit and reach”. Se ha medido la extensibilidad isquiosural de todos los nadadores (N=36) de ambos sexos, que entrenan en un centro de tecnificación acuático español. La edad de los participantes del estudio oscila entre los 13 y los 17 años. Esta población de nadadores ha sido dividida en cuatro grupos diferentes, dependiendo del estilo de natación en el que están especializados (crol, espalda, braza y mariposa). Para conocer la influencia del estilo natación sobre los resultados obtenidos en el test “sit and reach”, se ha aplicado un test inicial y nueve meses más tarde un test final, lo que ha permitido conocer también la evolución de las mediciones Como conclusión, la extensibilidad isquiosural y su evolución, no está condicionada por el estilo de natación en el que están especializados los nadadores que han participado en este estudio, The aim of this research is to verify the swimming style in which swimmers are specialized, have has influences hamstring extensibility athletes who have had participated in this research. The employed test for this work was the “sits and reach" test. It was measured hamstring extensibility of all swimmers (N = 36) of both sexes, who train in Spanish aquatic center modernization. The age of the study participants is between 13 and 17 years. This population of swimmers has been divided into four different groups, depending on the style of swimming in which they are specialized (crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). To determine the influence of swimming style on the results obtained in the test "sit and reach", it having had applied an initial test before, and a final test nine months later, which have had permitted also know the measurements evolution. Nowadays, alternative uses of phosphogypsum (PG) in the building industry are being considered in several countries; however, the natural radioactivity level in the PG could be a restriction for those uses. United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) classified PG as Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (TENORM). This drawback could be avoided controlling its percentage in the cement preparation and the radionuclides content in the other raw materials used in its production, and calculating the activity concentration index (I) in the final by-products. The valorization of PG as a building material has been studied, from a radiological point of view, by developing a new stabilisation/solidification process. PG is incorporated within a polymeric sulphur matrix, obtaining a concrete-like material, which presents lower natural radioactive content than the initial PG. The 226Ra content of this material ranged between 26-27 Bq·kg-1 and it is quite similar to that of common Spanish building materials., Actualmente, en muchos países se está contemplando el uso alternativo del fosfoyeso (PG) en la industria de la construcción, aunque su contenido en radionucleidos naturales puede presentar ciertas restricciones para dicha aplicación (material clasificado por la US-EPA como TENORM: “Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Materials). No obstante, estos inconvenientes podrían paliarse controlando el porcentaje del PG y los niveles de radioactividad en las materias primas a incorporar al cemento y calculando el índice de concentración de actividad (I) en los productos finales. La valorización del PG como material de construcción se ha estudiado en este trabajo desde el punto de vista radiológico, desarrollando un nuevo proceso de estabilización/solidificación, obteniéndose un material de características similares al cemento y que presenta menor contenido de radionucleidos naturales que el PG inicial. Los niveles de 226Ra de este material (26-27 Bq·kg-1) son similares a los de algunos materiales de construcción utilizados comúnmente en España.

The semipreparative chiral separation of lansoprazole and two related compounds (pantoprazole and rabeprazole) using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is presented in this work. Different loads were evaluated in order to obtain high enantiomeric purities and production rates. The volumes injected were 1, 2 and 4 mL. The concentrations of the racemic mixtures were 3 and 6 g/L for lansoprazole and 1.5 g/L for pantoprazole and rabeprazole. In all the cases, the recoveries, for a purity higher than 99.9%, were better for the second eluted enantiomer than for the first one. This fact conditioned the production rate of the first eluted enantiomer that, considering a fixed purity, was always lower than that obtained for the other one. In the case of lansoprazole it was possible to obtain 0.025 and 0.090 mg/min of the first and second eluted enantiomer, respectively, with an enantiomeric purity of 99.9%. For rabeprazole enantiomers 0.037 and 0.062 mg/min, and in the case of pantoprazole the results were better (0.062 and 0.122 mg/min) due to the higher resolution.

Casi el 50% del alumnado tiene alguna enfermedad crónica. El desarrollo corporal es normal, la adaptación cardiovascular no es mala pero mejorable. La actividad física resulta insuficiente, la valoración de la condición física es inadecuada. Las instalaciones deportivas escolares en los centros públicos son claramente deficientes desde el punto de vista de la salud. Por último, en ninguno de los centros, el profesorado había recogido estos datos antes de la elaboración de esta investigación, salvo adaptaciones curriculares concretas pedidas por el alumnado. Se realizó un estudio epidemiológico de carácter descriptivo-observacional de las enfermedades crónicas en las clases de Educación Física de Educación Secundaria y Bachillerato. Se realizó en 36 Centros Educativos de la Comunidad de Madrid (España), en 4.527 alumnos, durante el periodo 2003-2009. Se utilizó un cuestionario como técnicas de recogida de datos. Se obtuvo que un elevado número de alumnos presentaron al menos una enfermedad crónica (53,19%), siendo alta la cantidad de alumnos que tienen varias (21,06%). Destacan por su prevalencia las alteraciones visuales y enfermedades del ojo (44,37%), las alergias (16,37%), las malposiciones dentales (8,61%), el asma (8,49%) y la escoliosis y cifoescoliosis (6,29%). Las patologías crónicas más importantes muestran un “patrón de prevalencia” que incluyen las enfermedades citadas. Las enfermedades más frecuentes en la cronología estudiada son compatibles con la realización de la clase de Educación Física, pero pueden ser importantes en el desarrollo de ésta si se ignoran., An observational and descriptive study of the epidemiology of chronic diseases in Physical Education classes in secondary education was carried out. It was conducted in 36 educational centers of the Autonomous Community of Madrid (Spain), in 4527 students, from 2003 to 2009. A questionnaire was used as data collection techniques. It revealed that a large number of students showed at least one chronic disease (53.19%) with a large amount of those suffering from multiple medical conditions (21.06%). The most prevalent illnesses include visual disturbances and eye diseases (44.37%), allergies (16.37%), misaligned teeth (8.61%), asthma (8.49%), scoliosis and kyphoscoliosis (6.29%). The most important chronic pathologies show a "prevalence pattern" which includes the previously mentioned diseases. The most common diseases in the analyzed chronology are compatible with the performance of the Physical Education lesson, but they may undermine its development if ignored.

Este estudio analiza la satisfacción del alumnado con la educación física (EF), así como su evolución entre el período 2004-2005 y el 2008-2009. En el estudio 2004-2005 participaron 2.934 estudiantes (edad: 13,4 ± 2,1 años), y 2.983 en el de 2008-20091 (edad: 13,5 ± 2,2). Se aplicó una escala de satisfacción con la EF con dos ítems: uno para el profesorado y el otro para la clase. Los resultados muestran que la satisfacción con la EF alcanza una valoración media de «notable», mejorando en el tiempo trascurrido entre uno y otro estudio en ambas variables: con el profesorado y con las clases. Los chicos muestran mayor satisfacción que las chicas con el desarrollo de las clases en ambos períodos (p < 0,05 para 2004-2005; p < 0,001 para 2008-2009). El género produce diferencias significativas en la satisfacción con el profesorado sólo en el estudio 2008-2009 (p < 0,05). Globalmente, la satisfacción con el profesorado y con las clases de EF desciende con el incremento de la edad., This study analyses students’ satisfaction with physical education, as well as how this satisfaction varied between the periods of 2004-2005 and 2008- 2009. The 2004-2005 study was carried out with 2934 students (age: 13.4 ± 2.1 years old) and the 2008-2009 study was carried out with 2983 students (age: 13.5 ± 2.2 years old). A satisfaction scale was applied with two items: one for teachers and one for the class. The findings revealed that satisfaction with physical education was given a B grade on average, and this mark improved over the time between the two studies with respect to both variables of teachers and the class. Boys were more satisfied than girls with classes in general (p < 0.05 for 2004-2005; p < 0.001 for 2008-2009). There were significant gender differences with respect to satisfaction with teachers only in the 2008-2009 study (p < 0.05). Overall satisfaction with physical-education teachers and classes decreased with age.

Guerrero.-- 4 pages, 3 tables, 2 figures., The alternative uses of waste-phophogypsum in the building industry are being considered nowadays in several countries, as its long-term storage and maintenance presents economic as well as potential environmental concerns. Advantages and disavantages of using both, natural gypsum and phosphogypsum, are discussed in this work over a radiological point of view. The natural radioactivity level in the waste-phosphogypsum could be a restriction for its use as building material, but this drawback could be avoided controlling its percentage in the cement preparation and the natural radioactivity level of the other raw materials used in its production, in addition to the calculation of the Ra-equivalent index in the final by-products. Introducción. El absceso cerebral es un proceso supurativo focal en el parénquima cerebral que todavía presenta una elevada mortalidad. El resultado está altamente relacionado con un tratamiento precoz y adecuado. Para valorar dicho tratamiento revisamos los abscesos cerebrales tratados en nuestro Servicio en los últimos 14 años Material y métodos. Presentamos una revisión de los 60 pacientes con diagnóstico de absceso cerebral piógeno tratados en el Servicio de Neurocirugía del Hospital Infanta Cristina entre Enero de 1990 y Febrero de 2004, prestando atención a la epidemiología, clínica, etiología, microbiología, tratamiento y resultado final. Resultados. La relación hombre/mujer es 5.6/1, con una edad media de 47 años; el origen de la infección más frecuente es el hematógeno, seguido de las infecciones contiguas, con un 22% de abscesos de origen desconocido; los gérmenes más frecuentes son los cocos Gram positivos (44%), con una importante presencia de gérmenes anaerobios (40%); en un 39% de los casos las infecciones son mixtas; las modalidades de tratamiento fueron la punción de los abscesos para aspiración-drenaje, la cirugía abierta, con o sin resección capsular, y el tratamiento médico exclusivo. 52 pacientes (86.7 %) curaron sin secuelas y 4 (6,7 %) fallecieron. Aunque los resultados de ambos tipos de tratamiento quirúrgico son similares, el drenaje del absceso requirió en un 20% de los casos un segundo proceder quirúrgico, mientras que la craneotomía lo precisó sólo en el 10%; la estancia media en nuestro hospital fue mucho menor en los abscesos tratados mediante drenaje que en los tratados mediante cirugía abierta (13 vs 26 días); la mortalidad fue mayor en pacientes con bajo nivel de conciencia al ingreso y en mayores de 70 años. Conclusiones. Consideramos que la menor estancia media del drenaje del absceso, unido a su alta eficacia y su baja morbilidad, hacen aconsejable su uso como tratamiento de primera elección. Introduction. Brain abscess is a focal suppurative process in the brain parenchyma that still carries high mortality rates. Outcome is closely related with a correct and early management. In order to evaluate this management we have reviewed the brain abscesses treated in our Department during the last 14 years. Material and Methods. The authors present a retrospective series of 60 consecutive patients with pyogenic brain abscess treated between January of 1990 and February of 2004 paying attention to the epidemiology, etiology, clinical data, microbiology, treatment modalities and outcome. Results. The male to female rate was 5.6 to 1. The average age was 47 years. Hematogenous spread was most frequent, followed by contiguous spread. In 22% of the cases, the origin was unknown. Regarding the causative pathogens, Gram positive cocci are the most frequent (44%), with a 40% incidence of anaerobics. A mixed infection occurred in 39% of the abscesses. Three modalities of treatment were used: non surgical, catheter drainage-aspiration and surgical excision. Outcome was excellent in 52 patients (86.7%) and 4 patients (6.7%) died. Although outcome was similar in both surgical modalities, drainage-aspiration required a second procedure in 20% of the cases while this was necessary in only 10% of the patients with abscess excision. Length of admission was shorter in the drainage-aspiration group than in the excision group (13 and 26 days respectively). Mortality was higher in patients with low level of consciousness and age over 70 years. Conclusions. The shorter admission time associated with drainage-aspiration of brain abscesses together with its high efficacy and low morbidity suggests that drainage-aspiration should be used as the first mode of treatment.

The authors report five patients who had either generalized or focal seizures in association with occlusion of the internal carotid artery. Two of them developed a motor deficit after having had several seizures. The other three did not develop a fixed neurological deficit, but their seizures had continued in spite of anticonvulsant treatment. After an extracranial to intracranial (EC-IC) bypass, the seizures either stopped or became less frequent. Based on our experience with these patients and our review of the literature, we think that seizures may be the initial or at least an early manifestation of cerebrovascular insufficiency in some patients. An EC-IC bypass may be of help when angiographic evidence of cerebrovascular occlusive disease is found.
