In this study, we examine how youth use media production to represent, (de)legitimate, and reimagine their experiences of hypercriminalization—the pervasive complex of social practices such as racial profiling that position young men of color as "always-already criminal." We analyze two clips from a youth-produced news show called POPPYN, specifically a 2014 episode focusing on youth and the criminal justice system, using tools from recontextualization analysis and multimodal semiotics, which together allow us to index the substitutions, deletions, rearrangements, and additions of component elements of social practices. Through investigation of linguistic and multimodal processes that represent social actors, actions, and constructions of their legitimacy, this study demonstrates ways that media making can serve as a tool for youth of color to process and rewrite persistent hypercriminalizing positionings in more agentive and hopeful ways. The present study examines the "adultification" of girls and "youthification" of women in popular magazines, in which girls are "dressed up" to look like women, and women are "dressed down" to look like girls. The analysis includes a total of 540 advertising and editorial images from women's, men's, and teen girls' U.S. magazines. Results show that adultification is more prevalent than youthification, that youthification is equally prevalent in men's and women's magazines, that girls who are adultified are more likely to be provocatively dressed and exhibit sexy facial expressions, and that advertising and editorial images are equally likely to feature adultification and youthification. This article addresses the conditions of possibility for international youth who produce media in the context of the AMIGOS/IDA development program run by Amigos de las Americas (AMIGOS) and an International Development Agency (IDA) in rural Nicaragua. The authors examine the conditions within which youth make decisions to produce media about gender, in order to examine how media, gender, and hope intersect in the context of youth-led development programming. Gender emerges as a popular and significant focus for media production in the context of social change within this context. The authors draw on qualitative case study data to argue that modernist development norms and post-feminist sensibilities contribute to the assemblage of complex pedagogical spaces that animate and inform a cautionary analysis regarding marginalization, power, and the limits of pedagogical interventions and liberation discourses. This paper analyzes the representations and narratives about young people in the press of Costa Rica as part of the student protests that occurred between 2010 and 2011. To this end, the text problematizes the media coverage made by major newspapers about youth practices and as this evidence the complex crisis of the institutionality anchored in values that are constructed and enacted from a logic of "exclusion power" adult-centered. The globalization of media allows for the imagea aod atoriea of marginslized and excluded groupa to be seen and heard by more people than ever before, creating 'mediaacapea' in which such populations compete for. visibility on an imagined global stage. We liken 140-character Twitter messages, sent and received regarding North African social protests, as one such mediascspe providing a slice of reality into the political ideology of Egyptian youth. Informed by anthmpological theory and utilizing the powerful data collection techniques available to computer systems technicians, this research explores the possibilities of analyzing Twitter data related to Egypt's soil political protests. In consideration of the role of Twitter in 2009 Iranian elections, this was chosen as the media platform to analyze Egyptisn events. Five properties make it an ideal form to express political protest. Twitter is: s) quick, providing real-time information in 140 characters or less, 2) free, 3) personal, 4) highly mobile and resistant to government control and 5) it can be anonymous. In seeking to answer our research questions on the role Twitter continues to play in Egyptian protests, we analyzed Twitter feeds to test for the existence of 'authorities' and 'hubs'. Authorities can be considered the leaders of social protest movements (those persons creating original content in Twitter and playing sn active role in setting up meeting days, times and places), while hubs serve as data dissemination points with large Twitter followings. Knowledge about the generation of Middle' East and North African youth has been constrained by the twin processes of intense visibilization and securitization since 9/11. The introduction to this special issue pushes research on youth beyond these processes to reveal the complex and creative ways in which young men and women have been negotiating gendered identities, spaces and power. This article investigates the visibility of youth (pemuda) in Indonesian history, concentrating on the 1998 Indonesian Student Movement's politically transgressive and yet increasingly popular forms of expression. The figure of the activist (aktivis), transfused with its history of revolt, nationalist struggle, violence and victimization, constituted the core of a powerful series of representations of nationalist youth politics that popularized student demonstrations within public culture. On the basis of ethnographic fieldwork, I trace the development of what I identify as the activist-as-fetish image over the movement's course, analysing how global and historical elements engender local and contemporary meanings in highly effective and yet heavily mediated ways. The YouthWorx project is a recently established initiative in inner urban Melbourne that enables ‘at risk’ and marginalized young people to participate in community radio and in multimedia production. YouthWorx seeks to offer direct pathways from youth arts to skill-building, and to entice disaffected young people into more socially productive pathways, through the provision of high-quality media and multimedia training. Yet the effectiveness of media education in creating active participants in democratic society is difficult to assess. This article examines some of the broader thinking behind the linkage of youth, media, identity and citizenship, and considers the difficulties of implementing a workable evaluation of causal links between those disparate fields. While early blogging research focused on top-ranked blogs commenting on public events, recent research confirms that most blogs today concern the personal life of the blogger. The present article focuses on a particular case of blogs that falls in between these categories. In Sweden, personal blogs written by young women have dominated the ranking lists of the most popular blogs during recent years. This new phenomenon is approached through an analysis of the characteristics and content of 20 top-ranked blogs authored by young women. Through their popularity, these bloggers have come to introduce commercial and professional aspects of blogging that challenge the conventions of personal blogs. The article analyses how the bloggers negotiate these conventions in self-presentations, postings and relations to readers and how they seek to perform a self through the blog that integrates different aspects of blogging. This study defines youth sexualized language (YSL)-language that sexually objectifies young people/youth (i.e. individuals who look like they could be minors)-and youth sexualized imagery (YSI)-photographs, drawings, or other visual depictions that sexually objectify young people/youth-and quantifies the frequency of both in mainstream adult film packaging. A content analysis of 2,600 randomly selected mainstream adult film covers released from 1995 to 2007 revealed that over 20 per cent of covers contained YSL, YSI, or both, including references to and depictions of teens, braces, pigtails, stuffed animals, and school uniforms. The analysis also revealed that adult film covers containing YSL and/or YSI overwhelmingly sexualized characters coded as female rather than as male or transgendered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article investigates the way (catholic) religion and youth are represented in different Flemish newspapers. The case of World Youth Day (WYD) 2005 offers a well-defined corpus, which is very suitable for an analysis of the discourse on religion, youth and media. Based on a linguistic analysis of the corpus, we have been able to describe the representation given to the WYD, of the presence of the pope and of the young participants. It turns out that, although the coverage is on the whole very precise, it shows remarkable patterns of inconsistency. On the one hand, most newspapers overemphasize the meaning of the presence of the pope at the WYD in relation to the overall meaning of the event. But this ‘idolatry’ does not correspond with the view of the Flemish participants, who also get a lot of attention and who are represented in an authentic way. The article explores various efforts to promote youth media in local communities in the U.S. It highlights the effort of Baltimore, Maryland-based nonprofit organization Wide Angle Youth, which provides youth practical media education, leadership development and video production skills, as well as provides information on the Who Are You? Youth Media Festival of the Youth Media Advocacy Coalition. It also notes several partnerships of various youth organizations and local communities to support this kind of youth media festivals and their advocacies.

The article offers information on the writing course for women hosted by the Girls Write Now (GWN), a growing non-profit mentoring organization, in New York City. It notes that the program, which pairs teenage girls with professional women in writing-related fields, includes monthly workshops and weekly pair meetings. The author states that the course aims to transform young women to become not just professional writers but also to prepare them for potential challenges in the future through various youth media tools and programs.

The article offers information on the youth media civic engagement course "Youth, Media and Democracy," led by Emilie Zaslow, assistant professor of Communication Studies at Pace University, which was conducted in New York City. The article focuses on the creation of participatory youth (PY) radio project in Ethiopia which is commissioned by the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Ethiopia. It explains the role of radio production facilitators from the Youth Dialogue, a program which aimed at collaborating young adults to discuss critical issues and devise possible solutions to address them, in the preparation of the radio launch. It notes the challenges and potential benefits of the PY Radio as well as explores the outcome of the project. Lessons learned from the project are also explained.

The article discusses the role of mass media in the campaign of U.S. presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama and in the 2008 election as a whole. It states that Obama has used various traditional and new types of mass media in his campaign which granted youth a wide range of opportunities to become politically involved, which include Web blogs and online forums. Furthermore, he utilized the power of youth generated media to gain favor from the youth sector and for fundraising efforts. The author explores his experience of struggling to get the public's focus on the youth's political and social importance as well as notes the role of youth media on this movement for change in the U.S. He recounts his move to run for a state representative position, however, he was discouraged because of his young age. Moreover, his campaign for change and political involvement was strengthened by the impact of youth media. The implication of technology for youth media and political participation is also explained.

The article discusses the implication of the 2008 U.S. presidential election for youth media. It notes the opportunities offered by the election for youth to engage in various political developments in the country through news coverage including political participation and awareness. The author claimed that youth media can create a nonviolence dialogue among the youth. Jill Petrie, a reporter of "Children's Press Line," stated that youth media provides a chance for the youth to weigh in real issues which greatly affect them.

The article discusses about "Young Cinema", a film festival in Turin, now on its second year. According to the article, the objective of the festival is to promote itself as culturally inclined. It was said that cinemas and video halls and offices were part of a protected art center, distant from the suburbs where car employees reside. It offers screenings of movies made by young filmmakers as promised by the organizers. Among the movies shown were "A qui Se Lo Halla," by Lee Sokol, "Alphabet City," by Amos Poe and "The Brother from Another Planet," by John Sayles.
