Purpose: To investigate urine microbiome differences among healthy women, women with recurrent uncomplicated cystitis (rUC), and those with sporadic/single uncomplicated cystitis (sUC) to challenge traditional beliefs about origins of these infections. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent both conventional urine culture and next-generation sequencing (NGS) of urine were retrospectively reviewed. Symptom-free women with normal urinalysis results as a control group were also studied. Samples were collected via transurethral catheterization. Results: In the control group, urine microbiome was detected on NGS in 83.3%, with Lactobacillus and Prevotella being the most abundant genera. The sensitivity of urine NGS was significantly higher than that of conventional urine culture in both the sUC group (91.2% vs. 32.4%) and the rUC group (82.4% vs. 16.4%). In urine NGS results, Enterobacterales, Prevotella, and Escherichia/Shigella were additionally found in the sUC group, while the recurrent urinary tract infection (rUTI)/rUC group exhibited the presence of Lactobacillus, Prevotella, Enterobacterales, Escherichia/Shigella, and Propionibacterium. Moreover, distinct patterns of urine NGS were observed based on menopausal status and ingestion of antibiotics or probiotics prior to NGS test sampling. Conclusions: Urine microbiomes in control, sUC, and rUTI/rUC groups exhibited distinct characteristics. Notably, sUC and rUC might represent entirely separate pathological processes, given their distinct urine microbiomes. Consequently, the use of urine NGS might be essential to enhancing sensitivity compared to conventional urine culture in both sUC and rUTI/rUC groups.

Identification of Helicotylenchus species is very challenging due to phenotypic plasticity and existence of cryptic species complexes. Recently, the use of rDNA barcodes has proven to be useful for identification of Helicotylenchus. Molecular markers are a quick diagnostic tool and are crucial for discriminating related species and resolving cryptic species complexes within this speciose genus. However, DNA barcoding is not an error-free approach. The public databases appear to be marred by incorrect sequences, arising from sequencing errors, mislabeling, and misidentifications. Herein, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the newly obtained, and published DNA sequences of Helicotylenchus, revealing the potential faults in the available DNA barcodes. A total of 97 sequences (25 nearly full-length 18S-rRNA, 12 partial 28S-rRNA, 16 partial internal transcribed spacer [ITS]-rRNA, and 44 partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I [COI] gene sequences) were newly obtained in the present study. Phylogenetic relationships between species are given as inferred from the analyses of 103 sequences of 18S-rRNA, 469 sequences of 28S-rRNA, 183 sequences of ITS-rRNA, and 63 sequences of COI. Remarks on suggested corrections of published accessions in GenBank database are given. Additionally, COI gene sequences of H. dihystera, H. asiaticus and the contentious H. microlobus are provided herein for the first time. Similar to rDNA gene analyses, the COI sequences support the genetic distinctness and validity of H. microlobus. DNA barcodes from type material are needed for resolving the taxonomic status of the unresolved taxonomic groups within the genus.

Abstract Introduction This study aimed to compare the integrity of the hyperreflective layer of the inner choroid in eyes with and without drusen. Methods Swept-source optical coherence tomography images of patients with drusen and normal controls were reviewed. Using a line plot of ImageJ, choroidal reflectivity was measured at the subfovea, and the integrity of the hyperreflective layer of the inner choroid was determined. Results In total, 63 eyes with drusen and 30 control eyes without drusen were included. The integrity of the hyperreflective layer of the inner choroid was preserved in 81.0% of eyes with drusen and 93.3% of normal controls. The proportion of eyes with the hyperreflective layer did not differ between eyes with and without drusen. Of the 63 subjects with drusen, this hyperreflective layer was observed in all 28 eyes (100%) with pachydrusen but only in 68.6% of the 35 eyes with soft drusen, and its prevalence was significantly different (P = 0.001). Conclusion The prevalence of the hyperreflective layer between the choriocapillaris and medium or large choroidal vessels in eyes with soft drusen differed from that in eyes with pachydrusen. These findings support the suggestion that changes within the choroidal stroma may be involved in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration.

Carabid beetles, are one of the largest taxonomic groups with >40,000 recorded species. Acoptolabrus leechi yooni has been listed as an endangered species in the Republic of Korea. The whole mitochondrial genome of A. leechi yooni consisted of a16,825-bp encompassing 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 1 control region. The DNA sequence comprises 79.4% of A-T region and 20.6% of G-C region. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that A. leechi yooni is very close to A. mirabilissimus mirabilissimus and A. changeonleei. This study provides a complete mitochondrial genome sequence of A. leechi yooni and basic data for protecting the endangered species.

Abstract The study aimed to identify critical factors associated with the surgical stability of pogonion (Pog) by applying machine learning (ML) to predict relapse following two-jaw orthognathic surgery (2 J-OGJ). The sample set comprised 227 patients (110 males and 117 females, 207 training and 20 test sets). Abstract Background This study aimed to determine short-term and long-term outcomes according to time intervals after stenting and compared them with those of emergency surgery (ES) in colorectal cancer (CRC) with malignant obstruction. Methods CRC with malignant obstructions was reviewed retrospectively between January 2008 and July 2018. Of a total of 539 patients who visited the emergency room and underwent ES, 133 were enrolled in the ES group. Of a total of 567 patients who initially received stenting and subsequently underwent elective surgery, 220 were enrolled in the SEMS group. The interval between SEMS placement and elective surgery was classified as 17 days. Results For those who received SEMS (n = 220), those with a time interval of 11–17 days (n = 97) had fewer hospital days than those with a time interval of 17 days (n = 55) (1.0% vs. 14.6%). Multivariable analysis revealed a decreased risk of death for the group with a time interval of 11–17 days (20.6%) compared to the ES group (31.6%) (hazard ratio: 0.48; 95% confidence interval: 0.24–0.97). Disease-free survival was comparable between the SEMS and ES groups regardless of the time interval (log-rank p = 0.52). Conclusions The time interval of 11–17 days after stenting to elective surgery appeared to be associated with the most favorable outcomes.

Abstract Four GH16 family β-agarases (GH16A, GH16B, GH16C, and GH16D), originated from an agarolytic bacterium Cellvibrio sp. KY-GH-1, were expressed in an Escherichia coli system and their activities were compared. Only GH16B (597 amino acids, 63.8 kDa), with N-terminal 22-amino acid signal sequence, was secreted into the culture supernatant and demonstrated a robust endolytic agarose hydrolyzing activity for producing neoagarotetraose (NA4) and neoagarohexaose (NA6) as end products. The optimal temperature and pH for the enzyme activity were 50 °C and 7.0, respectively. The enzyme was stable up to 50 °C and over a pH range of 5.0–8.0. The kinetic parameters, including Km, Vmax, kcat, and kcat/Km, of GH16B β-agarases for agarose were 14.40 mg/mL, 542.0 U/mg, 576.3 s−1, and 4.80 × 106 s−1 M−1, respectively. The addition of 1 mM MnCl2 and 15 mM tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine enhanced the enzymatic activity. When agarose or neoagaro-oligosaccharides were used as substrates, the end products of enzymatic catalysis were NA4 and NA6, whereas agaropentaose was produced along with NA4 and NA6 when agaro-oligosaccharides were used as substrates. Treatment of 9%[w/v] melted agarose with the enzyme (1.6 µg/mL) under continuous magnetic stirring at 50 °C for 14 h resulted in efficient agarose liquefaction into NA4 and NA6. Purification of NA4 and NA6 from the enzymatic hydrolysate (9%[w/v] agarose, 20 mL) via Sephadex G-15 column chromatography yielded ~ 650 mg NA4/~ 900 mg NA6 (i.e., ~ 85.3% of the theoretical maximum yield). These findings suggest that the recombinant thermostable GH16B β-agarase is useful for agarose liquefaction to produce NA4 and NA6. Graphical Abstract

Since the identification of the human urinary microbiome, numerous studies have characterized this microbial community and improved our knowledge of its association with urinary diseases. This association between urinary diseases and microbiota is not confined to the urinary microbiota; it is interconnected with the microbiota of other organs. The gastrointestinal, vaginal, kidney, and bladder microbiota all affect urinary diseases because they work with their respective organs to control the growth and operation of the immune, metabolic, and nervous systems through dynamic bidirectional communication along the bladder-centered axis. Therefore, disturbances in the microbial communities may result in the emergence of urinary diseases. In this review, we describe the increasing and intriguing evidence of complicated and critical relationships that may contribute to the development and progression of urinary diseases through disruption of the microbiota in various organs.

Utilizing chemical agents in pest management in modern agricultural practices has been the predominant approach since the advent of synthetic insecticides. However, insecticide resistance is an emerging issue, as pest populations evolve to survive exposure to chemicals that were once effective in controlling them, underlining the need for advanced and innovative approaches to managing pests. In insects, microRNAs (miRNAs) serve as key regulators of a wide range of biological functions, characterized by their dynamic expression patterns and the ability to target genes. Recent studies are increasingly attributed to the significance of miRNAs in contributing to the evolution of insecticide resistance in numerous insect species. Abundant miRNAs have been discovered in insects using RNA sequencing and transcriptome analysis and are known to play vital roles in regulation at both the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Globally, there is growing research interest in the characterization and application of miRNAs, especially for their potential role in managing insecticide resistance. This review focuses on how miRNAs contribute to regulating insecticide resistance across various insect species. Furthermore, we discuss the gain and loss of functions of miRNAs and the techniques for delivering miRNAs into the insect system. The review emphasizes the application of miRNA-based strategies to studying their role in diminishing insecticide resistance, offering a more efficient and lasting approach to insect management.

The development of drug-resistant influenza and new pathogenic virus strains underscores the need for antiviral therapeutics. Currently, neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors are commonly used antiviral drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the prevention and treatment of influenza. Here, we show that vitisin B (VB) inhibits NA activity and suppresses H1N1 viral replication in MDCK and A549 cells. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), which frequently occur during viral infection, increase virus replication by activating the NF-κB signaling pathway, downmodulating glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) expression, and decreasing the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) antioxidant response activity. VB decreased virus-induced ROS generation by increasing G6PD expression and Nrf2 activity, and inhibiting NF-κB translocation to the nucleus through IKK dephosphorylation. In addition, VB reduced body weight loss, increased survival, decreased viral replication and the inflammatory response in the lungs of influenza A virus (IAV)-infected mice. Taken together, our results indicate that VB is a promising therapeutic candidate against IAV infection, complements existing drug limitations targeting viral NA. It modulated the intracellular ROS by G6PD, Nrf2 antioxidant response pathway, and NF-κB signaling pathway. These results demonstrate the feasibility of a multi-targeting drug strategy, providing new approaches for drug discovery against IAV infection.

Filenchus cylindricus (Thorne & Malek, 1968) Niblack & Bernard, 1985 was reported from the sandy rhizospheric soils of Poa pratensis and for the first time in Korea. Females and males are molecularly characterized and morphological and morphometric data supplied. Identification was made using an integrative approach considering morphological characteristics and inferences drawn from the analyses of the D2-D3 expansion segment of 28S rRNA and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 of rRNA partial sequences. Females and males from Korea conform to the type descriptions and also to subsequent species descriptions from Iowa and Colorado USA, Sudan and Pakistan. Despite the close morphological and morphometric similarities with F. thornei (Andrássy, 1954) Andrássy, 1963, the two species can be adequately differentiated based on molecular data inference.

The impacts of observation data sets on the high-resolution (1/24°) Northwest Pacific prediction system were investigated with the model sensitivity tests. We compared the model experiments assimilating the different combinations of the observation data sets, such as the sea surface height derived from satellite altimetry, sea surface temperature, and in-situ profiles, based on the Ensemble Optimal Interpolation. Pseudo-profiles constructed by the method of Cooper and Haines (1996, CH96) were assimilated into the model to assimilate sea surface height data. CH96 applied a conservation principle to derive pseudo-profiles by rearranging preexisting profiles. The comparison of the model experiments suggests that each observation data set enhances the model performance. Especially, the assimilation of the sea surface height reduces the model error by more than 9.81% and 6.44%, respectively, in terms of the root-mean-square error of the ocean temperature and salinity in the subsurface layer. It is interesting that the assimilation of the in-situ temperature profiles in the Korean marginal seas contributes to improving the reproducibility of the subsurface temperature and salinity in the East/Japan Sea (EJS) as well as Kuroshio-Kuroshio Extension (K-KE) regions. The improvement in the K-KE region seems to be related to the reproducibility of the Kuroshio axis. As the water mass in the EJS flows into the Pacific Ocean through the Tsugaru Strait, it affects the front of the Sanriku confluence, and it seems to eventually control the Oyashio Current and Kuroshio axis. In conclusion, this study evaluated the contribution of each observation component to ocean analysis in the KOOS-OPEM and confirmed the role of the existing observation networks. This study also suggests that greater attention should be paid to the role of regional ocean observation networks to improve the forecast skill of the ocean prediction system not only in the region but also in the open ocean, such as the Pacific Ocean.

Abstract Pigment epithelial detachment (PED) is common in eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), and choroidal neovascularisation (CNV), which is almost always associated with PED, is found in a higher proportion than previously expected. Using en-face optical coherence tomography, this retrospective study aimed to investigate the PED location in relation to various geometric landmarks including the foveal centre (FC), greatest choroidal thickness (GCT) point and optic disc centre. Objectives Intratympanic dexamethasone injection (ITDI) has been introduced as a treatment option for subjective tinnitus. However, the effects of ITDI on patients with tinnitus remain unclear. In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the effectiveness of ITDI for tinnitus treatment. Methods We searched Medline, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Embase. Four double-blind randomized controlled trials that tested the efficacy of ITDI compared with a placebo were deemed eligible for a quantitative meta-analysis, while four prospective studies and seven retrospective studies reporting the effectiveness of ITDI on tinnitus treatment were included in a qualitative synthesis. Results In the four studies included in the quantitative meta-analysis, ITDI did not show evidence of tinnitus improvement compared with placebo (odds ratio [OR], 1.38; 95% confidence interval, 0.53–3.61). In the 11 studies included in the qualitative synthesis, seven retrospective studies without controls reported rates of tinnitus improvement after ITDI ranging from 35.9% to 91.3%. In the four prospective studies with controls, ITDI seemed to be effective when combined with other drugs for tinnitus treatment. Conclusion ITDI alone did not show a significant effect for treating tinnitus compared with placebo. However, the potential of combination treatment of ITDI with other drugs for tinnitus therapy should be further studied in more systematic research.

This study aimed to determine the feasibility of temperature difference as an overgrowth-prevention technique to influence plant height and internode length in a plant factory with artificial lighting. The control plants were grown in a commercial nursery greenhouse using a growth regulator (Binnari), and +DIF (25 °C/15 °C), 0DIF (20 °C/20 °C), and −DIF (15 °C/25 °C) were the treatments with different day/night temperatures and the same average temperature (20 °C). Cucumbers showed the strongest suppression under the −DIF treatment, with a dwarfism rate of 33.3%. Similarly, tomatoes showed 0.8% and 22.2% inhibition in the 0DIF and −DIF treatments, respectively. The FV/FM of cucumber was approximately 0.81 for all treatments. The OJIP changes differed for cucumbers; however, both cucumbers and tomatoes had similar OJIP curve patterns and no abnormalities. The relative growth rate of cucumbers at the growth stage was 1.48 cm·cm·day−1 for days 6–9 in +DIF stage 3, which was the highest growth rate among all treatments, and 0.71 cm·cm·day−1 for days 3–6 in −DIF stage 1, which was the most growth-inhibited treatment. In tomatoes, we found that days 3–6 of −DIF stage 1 had the most growth inhibition at 0.45 cm·cm·day−1. For cucumber, −DIF days 3–6 had the most growth inhibition, with a relative growth rate of 0.71 cm·cm·day−1, but the fidelity was significantly higher than the other treatments, with a 171% increase. The same was true for tomatoes, with days 3–6 of −DIF stage 1 showing the most inhibited growth at 0.45 cm·cm·day−1 but a 200% increase in fidelity. Therefore, applying the −DIF treatment at the beginning of growth would be most effective for both cucumbers and tomatoes to prevent overgrowth through the DIF in a plant factory with artificial lighting because it does not interfere with the seedling physiology and slows down the growth and development stage.

BackgroundTinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is a standard treatment for tinnitus that consists of directive counseling and sound therapy. However, it is based on face-to-face education and a time-consuming protocol. Smart device–based TRT (smart-TRT) seems to have many advantages, but the efficacy of this new treatment has been questioned. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to compare the efficacy between smart-TRT and conventional TRT (conv-TRT). MethodsWe recruited 84 patients with tinnitus. Results were compared between 42 patients who received smart-TRT and 42 control participants who received conv-TRT. An interactive smart pad application was used for directive counseling in the smart-TRT group. The smart pad application included detailed education on ear anatomy, the neurophysiological model of tinnitus, concept of habituation, and sound therapy. The smart-TRT was bidirectional: There were 17 multiple choice questions between each lesson as an interim check. The conv-TRT group underwent traditional person-to-person counseling. The primary outcome measure was the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), and the secondary outcome measure was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS). ResultsBoth treatments had a significant treatment effect, which comparably improved during the first 2 months. The best improvements in THI were –23.3 (95% CI –33.1 to –13.4) points at 3 months and –16.8 (95% CI –30.8 to –2.8) points at 2 months in the smart-TRT group and conv-TRT group, respectively. The improvements on the VAS were also comparable: smart-TRT group: –1.2 to –3.3; conv-TRT: –0.7 to –1.7. ConclusionsTRT based on smart devices can be an effective alternative for tinnitus patients. Considering the amount of time needed for person-to-person counseling, smart-TRT can be a cost-effective solution with similar treatment outcomes as conv-TRT.

The Yellow and East China Seas (YECS) are productive continental shelves where essential nutrients for phytoplankton growth are mainly supplied by the intrusion of the Kuroshio Current, riverine inputs, and atmospheric deposition. Surface temperatures in YECS are increasing due to global warming, and are projected to increase further. In this study, future changes in YECS biogeochemical processes were evaluated using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) Earth System Models. We found a great diversity in predictions of future changes in chlorophyll-a over the YECS region. This diversity was determined to be closely related to the extent of phosphorus (P) limitation for phytoplankton growth. Models simulating positive chlorophyll changes tend to simulate increased Dissolved Inorganic Phosphate (DIP) supplies under future global warming. Our study also demonstrated that the intrusion of the Kuroshio Current into the YECS plays a critical role in future changes in DIP and chlorophyll-a by transporting relatively DIP-rich subsurface water from the Kuroshio Current into the marginal sea.

The pseudo null growth model in Minkowski 3-space is shaped by evolving a pseudo null curve as denoted direction, growth velocity, and stretch in this paper. Meanwhile, the idea of the generalized Hasimoto surfaces is proposed based on the vortex filament equation. The conditions and geometric structures of the generalized Hasimoto pseudo null growth surfaces are investigated accompanied by some typical examples.

Abstract We investigated the structural findings on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) related to the presence of right-angled vessels (RAV) in patients with macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2 with severity 3 in Korea. A retrospective multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in six tertiary hospitals in Korea; the study included 116 MacTel type 2 eyes with severity 3. The SD-OCT findings were compared between eyes with RAV on fundus photography or fluorescein angiography and those without RAV. Logistic regression was performed to determine factors associated with the presence of RAV. Fifty eyes presented with RAV and 61 eyes without RAV. Urachal adenocarcinoma is rare, accounting for only 10% of adenocarcinomas of the bladder and the prognosis of urachal adenocarcinomas is poor since most cases are detected late. Since urachal adenocarcinoma is a rare disease, no effective standard treatment has yet been established. However, in recent studies, resection of carcinoma is considered the only treatment considered for non-metastatic cases. Although for large sized urachal adenocarcinoma, open surgery or laparoscopic surgery is usually considered, we have recently experienced huge urachal carcinoma by robotic surgery. We used cystoscopy and the robot to assess the cancer margins and safely perform the operation. A 71-year-old man with a medical history of hypertension and arrhythmia visited our urology department with urachal cancer detected by computed tomography (CT). CT showed a lobulated low-density mass, most likely urachal carcinoma, abutting the anterior dome of the bladder and anterior abdominal wall. We performed preoperative cystoscopy to assess the extent of the protrusion of the urachal cancer into the bladder wall and the area requiring resection during surgery. We confirmed the size and extent of the mass protruding into the anterior wall of the urinary bladder and Robot-assisted laparoscopic intracorporeal urachal mass resection and partial cystectomy using cystoscopy together was performed. After one month, the patient has no complications and no complaining symptoms complaints without any abnormal finding of follow up imaging test. Although more procedures must be performed to ensure the safety of robotic surgery as a treatment strategy for large urachal carcinomas, we confirm that robotic surgery can replace open or laparoscopic surgery for such tumors.

Substantial improvement of microvolume UV absorption spectrometry in sensitivity, robustness and ease of operation was achieved for routine biological applications. A unique microtubing-based absorption cell (208 μm internal diameter) featuring enhanced light transmission with a liquid core waveguide technique provided dramatically enhanced absorption sensitivity, proportional to the extended path length (50 mm, from the typical 1 mm), while robust measurement performance was attained by implementation of preventive measures against bubble trapping along the light path. For pBR322 plasmid DNA, absorbance at 260 nm was reliably measurable down to 0.1 ng/μl with repeatability typically 2–3% RSD. The detection limit was 0.03 ng/μl dsDNA, far lower than the current state-of-the-art ∼1 ng/μl. Sample consumption for each measurement was 2.4 μl. Automated operation implemented for the first time in microvolume spectrophotometry facilitated the ease in handling with small-volume biological samples.

Since chemical concentrations are typically higher in overripe and fermented fruits than in fresh fruits, D. melanogaster is hypothesized to be attracted to higher concentrations of volatiles than D. suzukii. Therefore, the chemical preferences of the two flies were compared via Y-tube olfactometer assays and electroantennogram (EAG) experiments using various concentrations of 2-phenylethanol, ethanol, and acetic acid. D. melanogaster exhibited a higher preference for high concentrations of all the chemicals than that of D. suzukii. In particular, since acetic acid is mostly produced at the late stage of fruit fermentation, the EAG signal distance to acetic acid between the two flies was higher than those to 2-phenylethanol and ethanol. This supports the hypothesis that D. melanogaster prefers fermented fruits compared to D. suzukii. When comparing virgin and mated female D. melanogaster, mated females showed a higher preference for high concentrations of chemicals than that of virgin females. In conclusion, high concentrations of volatiles are important attraction factors for mated females seeking appropriate sites for oviposition.

Recent deep learning algorithms have further improved risk classification capabilities. However, an appropriate feature selection method is required to overcome dimensionality issues in population-based genetic studies. In this Korean case–control study of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P), we compared the predictive performance of models that were developed by using the genetic-algorithm-optimized neural networks ensemble (GANNE) technique with those models that were generated by eight conventional risk classification methods, including polygenic risk score (PRS), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and deep-learning-based artificial neural network (ANN). GANNE, which is capable of automatic input SNP selection, exhibited the highest predictive power, especially in the 10-SNP model (AUC of 88.2%), thus improving the AUC by 23% and 17% compared to PRS and ANN, respectively. Genes mapped with input SNPs that were selected by using a genetic algorithm (GA) were functionally validated for risks of developing NSCL/P in gene ontology and protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analyses. The IRF6 gene, which is most frequently selected via GA, was also a major hub gene in the PPI network. Genes such as RUNX2, MTHFR, PVRL1, TGFB3, and TBX22 significantly contributed to predicting NSCL/P risk. GANNE is an efficient disease risk classification method using a minimum optimal set of SNPs; however, further validation studies are needed to ensure the clinical utility of the model for predicting NSCL/P risk.

A novel compound 1 and nine known compounds (2–10) were isolated by open column chromatography analysis of the root bark of Ulmus davidiana. Pure compounds (1–10) were tested in vitro to determine the inhibitory activity of the catalytic reaction of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH). Compounds 1, 2, 4, 6–8, and 10 had IC50 values ranging from 11.4 ± 2.3 to 36.9 ± 2.6 μM. We used molecular docking to simulate inhibitor binding of each compound and estimated the binding pose of the catalytic site of sEH. From this analysis, the compound 2 was revealed to be a potential inhibitor of sEH in vitro and in silico. Additionally, molecular dynamics (MD) study was performed to find detailed interaction signals of inhibitor 2 with enzyme. Finally, compound 2 is promising candidates for the development of a new sEH inhibitor from natural plants.

Abstract Current quality control of Inonotus obliquus requires chromogen complex content limit of 10% in accordance with the State Pharmacopoeia of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. However, this causes ambiguous results, impeding precise quality control. To improve ambiguous quality control criteria, this study developed a new HPLC method using two novel marker compounds (inotodiol and 3β-hydroxylanosta-8,24-dien-21-al) to control the quality control of I. obliquus. The HPLC analysis was carried out in a C18 column with an isocratic elution of 95% acetonitrile at 210 nm. The developed method validated in terms of linearity, precision, accuracy, and recovery. The content criteria were established by the linear regression method and relative standard deviation method. As the results of the quantitative monitoring, 1.165 mg/g of inotodiol and 1.717 mg/g of 3β-hydroxylanosta-8,24-dien-21-al, calculated by the relative standard deviation method, were suggested new quality criteria. A new HPLC method was developed to improve current quality control of I. obliquus and new lower content criteria were proposed as a result of quantitative monitoring. Graphical abstract

Abstract Background The purpose of this study is to investigate the heritability of total rotation, matrix rotation, and intramatrix rotation of the mandible in Korean monozygotic (MZ) twins, dizygotic (DZ) twins, and their siblings. Materials and methods The samples consisted of 75 pairs of Korean twins (39.7 + 9.26 years; MZ group, 36 pairs; DZ group, 13 pairs; sibling group, 26 pairs). Lateral cephalograms were taken, and 13 variables related to internal and external mandible rotation were measured. Three types of occlusal planes (bisected occlusal plane, functional occlusal plane, and the MM bisector occlusal plane) were used to evaluate genetic influence on the occlusal plane. Heritability (h 2) was calculated by using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Falconer’s method. Results With regard to mandibular rotation, the MZ twin group showed significantly higher ICC values compared to the DZ twin and sibling groups. The ICC mean values for 13 cephalometric measurements were 0.85 (MZ), 0.62 (DZ), and 0.52 (siblings) respectively. The heritability of the total rotation (0.48) and matrix rotation (0.5) between the MZ and DZ groups was higher than that of the intramatrix rotation (− 0.14). All of the three types of occlusal plane showed high heritability, and among the three types, the functional occlusal plane showed the highest heritability (h 2 = 0.76). Conclusion Based on these findings that showed a strong genetic effect on total rotation and matrix rotation, maintaining these rotations should be carefully considered in the orthodontic treatment plan, while the lower border of the mandible may be responsive to various treatments. Occlusal plane change, especially with regard to the functional occlusal plane, may not be stable due to strong genetic influences.

Morphological (cyst shape, color, and sizes [length (L), maximum width (W), volume and “a” (L/W)]), structural (vulvar cone slope angle [VCSA], surface wrinkle [VCSW], cyst wall thickness, composition, and texture) and biological characteristics (fecundity, hatching, and emergence [number of second-stage juveniles (J2) from a cyst]) in preceding Heterodera glycines (Hg), currently- recorded H. sojae (Hs) and H. trifolii (Ht) were examined by microscopy. Cysts were lemon-shaped, indicating the genus is Heterodera except for Hs that formed frequently globular cysts with significantly flatter VCSA (102.2°) with smooth VCSW than Hg (50.6°) and Ht (82.0°), but not genus Globodera because of the presence of vulvar cone in Hs. Ht was significantly larger in all morphological characteristics than Hg and Hs, suggesting Ht may be diagnosed differentially by cyst sizes and also host plant preferences. Hs showed smaller “a” value with more globular shape and stronger structures with more thickened and strengthened collagen-like texture of cyst wall than Hg and Ht. This suggests Hs may be diagnosed differently by structural characteristics from the others, especially Hg with similar cyst sizes. There were no significant differences in emergence (inoculum potential) among cyst nematodes due to the offset of fecundity and hatching rate; however, the inoculum potential of Hs may be not so persistent as Hg and Ht in fields because of its lower fecundity and higher hatching rate (causing rapid inoculum loss) than the others. These characteristics of cysts provide information useful for simple and differential diagnoses and reliable management of cyst nematodes.

Due to the rapid development of next-generation sequencing, it has become possible to obtain information on the sequences of all genes in a specific microbiome. The detection of bacteria in patients with no urinary tract infections indicated that the dogma that “urine is sterile” was false, leading to active research regarding the roles of the urinary microbiome in the human urinary tract. Here, we present a review of the current literature regarding the role of the microbiome in urology.

Abstract The fruit of Arctium lappa L. (Arctii Fructus) is one of the most popularly used medicinal plant components in Asia. To enhance the functionality of Arctii Fructus extract, a bioconversion method was developed to produce arctigenin from arctiin. Treatment with β‐glucosidase increased the arctigenin content by >5 fold in Arctii Fructus extracts. The bioconversion products enhanced the apoptosis of cancer cells. The cell viabilities of gefitinib‐resistant lung cancer HCC827 (HCC827GR) cells and colon cancer cells (DLD1) were decreased by 40% and 35%, respectively. The bioconversion products also decreased anchorage‐independent growth of cancer cells. In addition, the increase of apoptosis in cancer cells by bioconversion was confirmed by the flow cytometry analysis. These results indicated that arctigenin exerts anticancer effects on lung and colon cancer cells and that Arctii Fructus can potentially function as a chemopreventive agent. In addition, bioconverted Arctii Fructus extract displayed higher anticancer activity than the same levels of purified arctigenin, indicating the advantage of consuming Arctii Fructus itself as a food or medicinal material.

Objectives. To investigate the neurocognition of aged patients with chronic tinnitus and reveal the possible association between tinnitus severity and cognitive function, with attention to mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods. Fifty-eight elderly patients (≥65 years old) with chronic tinnitus (≥6 months) were prospectively enrolled in this study. All patients assessed the neurocognitive batteries including the Korean version of the patient health questionnaire-9 (K-PHQ-9), the Lawton instrumental activities of daily living scale (K-IADL), and the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA-K). After initial evaluation to exclude moderate or severe cognitive impairment by a psychiatrist, the patients were classified into two groups: MCI and non-MCI, according to the MoCA-K scores (cutoff value, 22/23). All patients underwent audiological examinations including psychoacoustic tests of tinnitus. Results. Of 58 patients, 10 (17.2%) met the MCI criteria. The tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) score in the MCI group was significantly higher than that in the non-MCI group. Based on multivariate regression analysis, a significant association between tinnitus severity and MoCA-K score was also detected. Specifically, bothersome tinnitus (THI score ≥30) was closely linked to the presence of MCI. Meanwhile, the impact of MCI on both K-PHQ-9 and K-IADL scores was not evident in patients with chronic tinnitus. Conclusion. Tinnitus severity appears to be a potential independent determinant for predicting the MCI, suggesting the underlying mechanism between chronic tinnitus and cognitive deficit. Given that MCI highly links to dementia, the evaluation of cognitive functions in aged patients with chronic tinnitus need to be considered at the initial assessment of tinnitus.

Abstract Background Maxillary incisor protrusion is a prevalent dental deformity and is often treated by upper incisor intrusion and retraction. The mechanical loading triggers the resorption and apposition of the bone. Alveolar bone remodeling is expected to follow orthodontic tooth movement in a one-to-one relationship. However, in many cases, the outcomes are different. Alveolar bone might still remain thick causing lip protrusion and other aesthetic problems after treatment. Additional corrective procedures such as alveoloplasty. On the other hand, if the labial bone becomes too thin, periodontal problems like gingival recession might occur. The unpredictability of the treatment result and the risk of requiring corrective procedures pose significant challenges to both the providers and patients. The aim of this study is to determine factors that can help to predict the alveolar bone reaction before maxillary incisor intrusion and retraction. Methods The cohort included 34 female patients (mean age 25.8 years) who were diagnosed with skeletal class II malocclusion with upper incisor protrusion. These patients underwent extraction and orthodontic treatment with upper incisor intrusion and retraction. Lateral cephalograms at pre-treatment and post-treatment were taken. Linear and angular measurements were analyzed to evaluate the alveolar bone changes based on initial conditions. Results The study found that the relative change, calculated as change in alveolar bone thickness after treatment divided by the initial alveolar thickness, was inversely correlated with the initial thickness. There was a significant increase of labial alveolar bone thickness at 9-mm apical from cementoenamel junction (B3) (P < 0.05) but no statistically significant change in the thickness at other levels. In addition, the change in angulation between the incisor and alveolar bone was inversely correlated with several initial angulations: between the initial palatal plane and upper incisor angle, between the initial palatal plane and upper incisor labial surface angle, and between the initial palatal plane and bone labial surface angle. On the other hand, the change in labial bone thickness was neither significantly correlated with the initial thickness nor significantly correlated to the amount of retraction. Conclusion The unpredictability of alveolar bone remodeling after upper incisor intrusion and retraction poses significant challenges to treatment planning and patient experience. The study showed that the initial angulation between the incisor and alveolar bone is correlated with the change in angulation after treatment, the initial thickness of the alveolar bone was correlated with the relative change of the alveolar bone thickness (defined as change in thickness after treatment divided by its initial thickness), and the amount of intrusion was correlated with the alveolar bone thickness change at 9-mm apical from the cementoenamel junction after treatment. The results of the present study also revealed that the change in labial alveolar bone thickness was neither significantly correlated with the initial thickness nor significantly correlated to the amount of retraction.

Purpose: To evaluate the success rate and patient satisfaction with the readjustable midurethral sling (REMEEX system) for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD) or recurrent SUI in obese and non-obese women. Materials and Methods: Between August 2009 and August 2015, 70 patients who treated with the REMEEX system were stratified into normal, overweight and obesity groups according to body mass index. Objective surgical outcomes were evaluated using a 1-hour pad test that was performed 3 months after surgery. The subjective outcomes and degree of patient satisfaction were evaluated 3 months and 1 year after surgery. Results: Twenty-six normal weight, 31 overweight, and 13 obese women were included in the study. The objective cure rate determined using the 1-hour pad test revealed that 11 women (42.3%) were cured and 15 (57.7%) had improved in the normal weight group, respectively, compared with 16 (51.6%) and 15 (48.4%) in the overweight group and 6 (46.2%) and 7 (53.8%) in the obese group, respectively (p=0.78). One year after surgery, the subjective success rate was 91.5% in the normal weight group, 93.5% in the overweight group and 92.3% in the obese group. A total of 84.7%, 77.4%, and 77.0% of normal weight, overweight and obese women were very satisfied or satisfied 1 year after surgery, respectively. All groups showed similar success rates and satisfaction. Conclusions: The REMEEX procedure is equally effective in obese and normal weight women with ISD-type SUI or recurrent SUI.

We compared the therapeutic efficacy of facial nerve decompression (FND) and conservative treatment in patients with Bell’s palsy through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Primary database search was performed in PubMed, Medline, and Embase. After screening, 13 studies were assessed for their eligibility. Among them, seven studies employing either the House-Brackmann grading system (HBGS) or May’s classification (modified HBGS) were selected for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Based on May’s classification, the degree of recovery was classified into complete (HBGS I), fair (HBGS II–III), or failed (HBGS IV–VI) recovery. The outcomes were assessed between 6 and 12 months after surgery. The estimated pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using random effects model. Cohorts were comprised of patients who underwent FND (n=202, 53.0%) and conservative treatments (n=179, 47.0%). In pooled analysis, the rate of complete recovery was significantly higher in the FND group than in the control group (OR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.22 to 3.48; P=0.007) showing neither heterogeneity nor publication bias. Meanwhile, the rates of fair recovery (OR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.42 to 1.21; P=0.208) and failed recovery (OR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.22 to 1.67; P=0.327) in the FND group were similar to that in the control group. In subgroup analyses, there was no significant difference in the OR according to the operation timing and surgical approach. FND can be a possible treatment option for patients with complete Bell’s palsy, especially for complete recovery, which provide insights on decision-making and outcome prediction. However, FND should be determined carefully given the risk of small study effects and possible complications.

Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) and swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) have emerged as essential diagnostic tools in the study and management of various chorioretinal diseases. Evidence from early clinical studies using EDI-OCT and SS-OCT indicates that choroidal dysfunction plays a major role in the pathogenesis of chorioretinal diseases. Measurement of choroidal thickness (CT) has already become a major research and clinical method, and CT is considered as an indicator of choroidal status in a variety of ophthalmic diseases. Recently, CT measurement has also been proposed as a non-invasive marker for the early detection and monitoring of various systemic diseases. Among the several possible CT measurement locations, subfoveal CT has rapidly become a reliable parameter for measuring CT in healthy and diseased eyes. Moreover, recent advancements in OCT technology have enabled faster and wider imaging of the posterior part of the eye, allowing the various changes in CT as measured outside the macula to be shown accordingly. In this review, we first provide an overview of the results of clinical studies that have analyzed the healthy macular choroid and that in various chorioretinal diseases, and then summarize the current understanding of the choroid outside the macula. We also examine the CT profile as an index that encompasses both within and outside of the macula. Furthermore, we describe the clinical applications of ultrawide OCT, which enables visualization of the far periphery, and discuss the prospects for the development of more reliable choroidal parameters that can better reflect the choroid's characteristics.

Our knowledge that “urine is sterile” is no longer accepted after the development of a next-generation sequencing (NGS) test. Using NGS, microbiota in the human body were discovered, and it is expected that this will improve our understanding of human diseases. However, the mechanism involved in the effect of the microbiome on diseases is still poorly understood. Associations of gut microbiome with diseases have been recently reported. Based on such associations, bladder–gut–brain axis, gut–bladder axis, gut–vagina–bladder axis, and gut–kidney axis as novel mechanisms of action of the microbiome have been suggested. Each axis can influence the development and progression of disease through interactions. In these interactions, metabolites of the microbiome including short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and the inflammasome play an important role. Inflammasomes are multiprotein oligomers that can initiate inflammatory responses. Inflammasomes can trigger inflammation and pyroptosis and ultimately contribute to disease development. SCFAs play an important role in immune cell migration, cytokine production, and maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Associations of inflammasomes with systemic diseases such as obesity and insulin resistance have been reported. The roles of inflammasomes and SCFAs in kidney, bladder, and prostate diseases have also been revealed recently.

The linear Weingarten condition with ellipticity for the mean curvature and the extrinsic Gaussian curvature on a surface in the three-sphere can define a Riemannian metric which is called the elliptic linear Weingarten metric. We established some local characterizations of the round spheres and the tori immersed in the 3-dimensional unit sphere, along with the Laplace operator, the spherical Gauss map and the Gauss map associated with the elliptic linear Weingarten metric.

Objective: To compare the therapeutic efficacy after suburethral adjustable sling (Remeex system) for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) between pure intrinsic s phincter deficiency (ISD) and ISD with overactive bladder (OAB) group. Methods: The study subjects were 86 female patients with ISD who underwent Remeex system to treat female SUI and who were available for 12 months follow-up. We retrospectively studied both patients who underwent Remeex system due to pure ISD (group I) and those who underwent Remeex system due to ISD with OAB (group II). Improvement in objective and subjective symptoms were retrospectively evaluated using a 1hr pad weight test, global response assessment (GRA) and overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS). Results: Group I included 43 patients and group II included 43 patients of mean ages 56.8 ± 7.5 and 57.4 ± 6.6 years, respectively. Use of 1 hr pad weight test showed that incontinence decreased after the procedures in both groups, and that of group I patients was significantly lower than that of group II patients. The mean GRA score was significant a higher score in group I. The OABSS of patients in group II were 8.2 ± 1.1 and 7.2 ± 1.1, respectively, before and at 12 months after operation, did differ significantly. The mean change of OABSS of group II patients was significantly more decreased than that of group I patients. Conclusions: The Remeex system showed a greater patient satisfaction and a higher cure rate in pure ISD than ISD with OAB in female patients with urinary incontinence.

Cystoid macular edema (CME) is the abnormal collection of intraretinal fluid in the macular region, especially in the inner nuclear and outer plexiform layers. CME leads to severe visual impairment in patients with various retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusion, choroidal neovascularization, and uveitis. Although various retinal conditions lead to CME, a shared pathogenesis of CME is involved in these diseases. Accordingly, the pathogenesis of CME based on vasogenic mechanisms is first discussed in this review, including vascular hyperpermeability, leukostasis, and inflammation. We then describe cytotoxic mechanisms based on retinal Müller cell dysfunction. This comprehensive review will provide an understanding of the pathogenesis of CME for potential therapeutic strategies.

Purpose: To evaluate the categories of nocturia and relationships with the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) in Korean men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) accompanying nocturia. Materials and Methods: Five hundred twenty-one male patients from five different hospitals, aged ≥18 years, were included. The 3-day frequency volume chart was used to identify nocturia. We also used the IPSS and The International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire-Nocturia (ICIQ-N) module to verify the correlation between nocturia and quality of life. Results: The distribution of nocturia events varied from 1 to 11, and 2 nocturia events were most prevalent (48.4%). Across the various numbers of nocturia events, the mean age, first sleep period, functional bladder capacity (FBC), nocturnal polyuria index (NPI), nocturia index (NI), predicted number of nightly voids, and nocturnal bladder capacity index (NBCI) were statistically different. Patients with pure nocturnal polyuria showed different night lengths, nocturnal urine volume, FBC, NPI, NI, and predicted number of nightly voids than those without nocturnal polyuria. Patients with severely reduced NBCI were prominent in the IPSS >20 group, and the degree of vexation increased with the number of nocturia events. The IPSS storage symptom score and ICIQ-N symptom score positively correlated with nocturia events. Conclusions: In Korean male LUTS patients with nocturia, mixed-type nocturia was prominent, and patients with a high IPSS had a much poorer sleep quality than those with a low IPSS.

Although efficacies and proportions of tympanoplasty performed via endoscopic ear surgery (EES) have gradually introduced, it remains unclear whether total EES is a good alternative to microscopic ear surgery (MES). Herein, we aimed to compare therapeutic effects of EES and MES in patients receiving tympanoplasty or myringoplasty. A search of MEDLINE, PubMed, and Embase databases was conducted to compare the efficacies of EES and MES. Two investigators independently reviewed all studies and extracted data with a standardized form. We assessed risk of bias and calculated pooled odds ratio (OR) estimates with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Thirteen studies (607 EES patients and 678 MES patients) met inclusion criteria for quantitative meta-analysis. In pooled analysis, those who undergo EES have 0.99 times the OR of graft success compared to those with MES (95% CI, 0.84 to 1.16; P=0.894). In qualitative analysis, comparable hearing improvement was observed between the two groups, despite inconsistent audiometric evaluation. The air-bone gaps (ABGs) improved 2.02 dB less in EES than in MES (mean difference of improvements of ABGs, 2.02; 95% CI, –3.84 to –0.20; P=0.029); however, substantial heterogeneity and publication bias limited the integrity of this analysis. Further, EES significantly decreased canalplasty rate, wound complications, and operation time, compared to MES. Moreover, patients receiving EES reported higher cosmetic satisfaction than patients receiving MES. EES can be a good alternative to MES in terms of comparable graft success rate and hearing outcomes in patients receiving tympanoplasty or myringoplasty. Moreover, EES was less invasive, resulting in higher cosmetic satisfaction, reduced morbidity, and shorter operation time. Our results may affect decision-making and outcome prediction in cases of EES; however, confirmation is needed to clarify potential bias.

Objectives. To investigate how mouse cochleae are affected by the striking noise of titanium head golf driver. Methods. Thirty-two BALB/c mice (20–22 g) with normal hearing were used. The impact acoustic stimulus generated by the striking of titanium golf driver head was centered around 4.5 kHz with 120.5 dB sound pressure level. The recorded impact noise was provided to mice in two ways with the same exposure time of 288 seconds: 1,440 repetitions and an impact duration of 0.2 seconds for 2 hours (repetitive noise) or serially connected impact noise for 288 seconds (continuous noise). Auditory brainstem responses were measured at baseline, day 7, and day 14 after exposure. The mice were then sacrificed for histology. Results. Both groups showed statistically significant threshold shifts immediately after noise exposure. Mice in the continuous exposure group, except for those exposed to 32 kHz noise, recovered from threshold shifts 1–2 weeks after noise exposure. However, in the repetitive exposure group, threshold shifts remained for 2 weeks after exposure. The repetitive exposure group had greater hair cell damage than did the continuous exposure group. Structural changes in the stria vascularis were observed in the repetitive exposure group. Conclusion. Overexposure to impact noise caused by hitting of titanium head golf driver may be hazardous to the cochlea, and repetitive exposure may induce greater damage than continuous exposure.

The aerial parts of Tetrastigma hemsleyanum (APTH) have been used as a functional tea in China. The purpose of the current study was to identify the bioactive constituents with inhibitory activity against soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which are jointly considered potential therapeutic targets for vascular system diseases. In the present study, 39 compounds (1–39) were isolated from the APTH. Among them, compounds 8, 10, 12, 16, 17, 19, and 32 displayed potential activities, with IC50 values ranging from 4.5 to 9.5 µM, respectively, and all in non-competitive inhibition mode. Compounds 5, 10, 12, 19, and 32 displayed potent iNOS inhibitory effects, with IC50 values ranging from 15.6 to 47.3 µM. The results obtained in this work contribute to a better understanding of the pharmacological activities of T. hemsleyanum and its potential application as a functional food.

We investigated the relationship between pachydrusen and choroidal thickness and age in eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and fellow eyes, compared to eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). This retrospective study included 89 eyes with PCV and 146 eyes with CSC. The number, location, and shape of the pachydrusen and their association with choroidal thickness and age were analyzed. PCV eyes showed pachydrusen more frequently than eyes with CSC (52% vs. 20%, p < 0.001). Large solitary type and clustered type were more frequent in PCV eyes compared to CSC eyes (p = 0.003 and p = 0.001, respectively). Subfoveal choroidal thickness was associated with pachydrusen in eyes with PCV (odds ratio [OR] 1.006, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.001–1.011, p = 0.027), while age was associated with pachydrusen in CSC eyes (OR 1.137, 95% CI, 1.073–1.205; p < 0.001). Pachydrusen were localized directly over the pachyvessel on optical coherence tomographic findings in approximately two thirds of PCV eyes and fellow eyes (62% and 67%, respectively). Risk factors for pachydrusen differ according to diseases. The presence of pachydrusen was associated with choroidal thickness in PCV, while the association with age was more prominent in CSC.

Abstract Background Several studies have investigated the molecular drivers and therapeutic targets in adult soft tissue sarcomas. However, such studies are limited by the genomic heterogeneity and rarity of sarcomas, particularly in those with complex and unbalanced karyotypes. Additional biomarkers are needed across sarcoma types to improve therapeutic strategies. To investigate the molecular characteristics of complex karyotype sarcomas (CKSs) for therapeutic targets, we performed genomic profiling. Results The mutational landscape showed that TP53, ATRX, and PTEN genes were highly mutated. CKS samples were categorized into three groups based on copy number variations that were associated with CDK4 and RB1 signatures. Integrated analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data revealed several pathways related to PDGFR, which could be a strategic target for anti-sarcoma therapy. Conclusions This study provides a detailed molecular classification of CKSs and proposes several therapeutic targets. Targeted or combinational therapies for treating CKS should be considered before chemotherapy.

Objectives Smoking is associated with hearing loss, while the correlation between tinnitus and smoking is not fully elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate risk factors of tinnitus in adolescents in terms of smoking, and we identified a rectifiable parameter that can be serially monitored. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, with 2,782 participants aged 12 to 18 years, from 2008 through 2011. Participants with history of ear disease, hearing loss, and inadequate responses to questionnaires were excluded. We investigated the prevalence of tinnitus and tinnitus-related annoyance by questionnaire and sought potential risk factors in blood and urine tests and smoking history. Results The prevalence of tinnitus in the 12- to 18-year-old population was 17.5%, with 3.3% reporting tinnitus-related annoyance.
