Estimating recovery times from pollution incident is an important issue of targeted biomonitoring programs. In the present study, the impact and recovery of macroinvertebrate communities from a cadmium wastewater discharge in the Longjiang River, Guangxi, China, in early January 2012 were studied based on 83 samples collected in five surveys within 20 months after the incident. The pollution affected seriously the local aquatic biota, and consequently, the invertebrate abundance and species richness were reduced considerably. Twelve months later, the taxonomic number of macroinvertebrates began to increase. However, sensitive taxa remained rare. Twenty months later, the taxon richness and abundance of macroinvertebrates increased significantly compared to those in the previous four time points. To explore the possible time-scale over which pre-disturbance conditions might occur, we chose four different typical metrics of taxa richness (total taxa number, cumulative taxa number, taxa number per samples, and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index) and extrapolated modeled recovery trajectories. Target values for the four metrics were set at average values for sites from the nearby Lijiang River, which were used as a reference. Assuming a continued linear trajectory, the recovery times were estimated to be 52, 39, 39, and 31 months, respectively, which was roughly 3–5 years. This is consistent with results from recovery times from other studies of acute pollution cases, but contrasted strongly to the much longer recovery times associated with chronic pollution from groundwater contamination and mine-tailing runoff.

An effective biological index should meet two criteria: (1) the selected parameters have clear relationships with ecosystem health and can be measured simply by standard methods and (2) reference conditions can be defined objectively and simply. Species richness is a widely used estimate of ecosystem condition, although it is increased by nutrient enrichment, a common disturbance. Based on macrobenthos data from 91 shallow Yangtze lakes disconnected from the mainstem, we constructed an observed species (SO)-area (A) model to predict expected species richness (SE), and then developed an observed to expected index (O/E-SA) by calculating the SO/SE ratio. We then compared O/E-SA with three other commonly used indices regarding their ability to discriminate cultivated and urban lakes: (1) River Invertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS; O/E-RF), (2) Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (B-IBI), and (3) Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT). O/E-SA showed significant positive linear relationships with O/E-RF, B-IBI and ASPT. Quantile regressions showed that O/E-SA and O/E-RF had hump-shape relationships with most eutrophication metrics, whereas B-IBI and ASPT had no obvious relationships. Only O/E-SA, O/E50 and B-IBI significantly discriminated cultivated from urban lakes. O/E-SA had comparable or higher performance with O/E-RF, B-IBI and ASPT, but was much simpler. Therefore, O/E-SA is a simple and reliable index for lake ecosystem health bioassessment. Finally, a framework was proposed for integrated biological assessment of Yangtze-disconnected lakes.

The freshwater annelid worm genus Limnodrilus, including the widely distributed L. claparedianus Ratzel, 1868, is common in Chinese freshwater ecosystems. One species, previously recognized as morphologically intermediate between L. claparedianus and the North American taxon L. cervix Brinkhurst, 1963, is here described as a new species, L. paraclaparedianus Zhou & Cui n. sp., using both molecular and traditional taxonomy. Comparisons of sequences of the Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I (COI) mtDNA in a sample of Limnodrilus species showed that the distances between species were generally higher than the divergences within them. Phylogenetic analysis of COI as well as 16S mtDNA and Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 (ITS2) nDNA confirmed that the new species is an independent lineage. Moreover, morphological differences in the prostomium, characteristics of the chaetae and internal genitalia support the separation of the species.

Conversion of forests to urban land-use in the processes of urbanization is one of the major causes of biotic homogenization (i.e., decline in beta diversity) in freshwater ecosystems, threating ecosystem functioning and services. However, empirical studies exploring urban land-use shaping patterns of taxonomic and functional beta diversities and their components in subtropical urban rivers are limited. Here, by leveraging data for 43 sampling sites from urban and forest rivers in Shenzhen, a megacity showing rapid urbanization, we determined the spatio-temporal dynamics and associated drivers of taxonomic and functional beta diversities of river macroinvertebrates. Our results showed that, from the forest to urban rivers, taxonomic beta diversity (wet: 32.9%; dry: 17.1%) declined more significantly than functional beta diversity (wet: 17.4%; dry: 9.5%) in different seasons. We further found that these compositional changes were largely driven by decreased roles of species/traits replacement. Although replacement was also dominant for taxonomic beta diversity (60.4%-68.4%) in two sets of rivers, richness difference contributed more to functional beta diversity in the urban river (52.6%-60.5%). Both deterministic and stochastic processes simultaneously affected beta diversity, with stochastic processes being more important in the urban (3.0-19.0%) than forest rivers (0.0%-3.0%). Besides, db-RDA and variation partitioning results showed that local-scale environmental variables explained considerably large fractions of variation in beta diversity. We hence recommended that biodiversity conservation should focus on improving and restoring local environmental conditions. Despite no significant seasonal differences in beta diversity were detected in this study, we found that the roles of deterministic (i.e., local-scale and land-use variables) and stochastic processes varied considerately across seasons. This result highlights the viewpoint that urban river biodiversity monitoring should go beyond one-season snapshot surveys. As the ongoing trend of urbanization in developing countries, the findings of this study are relevant in guiding urban river environmental monitoring, biodiversity conservation and land-use planning.

Background Disentangling the relative roles of environmental filtering and spatial processes in structuring ecological communities is a central topic in metacommunity ecology. Metacommunity ecology in the temperate river ecosystems has been well developed, while less attention has been paid to subtropical urban river networks. Here, we examined the ecological factors and seasonal difference in structuring macroinvertebrates metacommunity assembly in the subtropical urban river networks in Shenzhen, South China. Results Our results revealed that there was no significant distinction of macroinvertebrate community composition among seasons, with only the relative abundance of Mollusca and Odonata significantly differed in both wet and dry seasons. One possible explanation was that most macroinvertebrates are generally pollution-tolerant taxa characterized with nonseasonal life cycle. In addition, distance-based redundancy analysis and variation partitioning approach revealed that metacommunity was determined equally by the environmental and dispersal-related factors. Further, our results showed that, although a slight temporal variation of relative contribution, the identity and explanation power of ecological factors were different among seasons. Specifically, stronger environmental filtering structuring community dynamics was observed in the dry than wet seasons, which might be owing to higher environmental heterogeneity under a low water-flow condition. Moreover, we detected that the influence of spatial processes was stronger in the wet than dry seasons, indicating an obvious dispersal processes due to high connectivity among sites. Conclusion Overall, our results revealed that environmental and spatial factors equally explained variations of macroinvertebrate metacommunity, implying the necessity of considering dispersal-related processes structuring ecological communities in river bioassessment programs. Moreover, degraded habitat conditions and water quality were the predominant factors that affected macroinvertebrate communities, indicating the significance and feasibility of improving local abiotic conditions to sustain local biodiversity. Further, our findings revealed the importance of seasonal dynamics of these urban river networks in structuring macroinvertebrate metacommunity. Thereby, our study improves the understanding of ecological processes governing macroinvertebrate metacommunity and underlines the idea that community ecology studies should go beyond the single snapshot survey in river networks.

Allonais inaequalis (Stephenson, 1911) is a well-known “morpho-species” of the subfamily Naidinae with a wide distribution in the world. In this study we describe it, as a new record, from China, and we compare molecular data of A. inaequalis from two geographic populations in China and one in Peru, and we re-evaluate the phylogenetic status of Allonais. Sequence data of both mitochondrial (COI, 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA) and nuclear (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) from 26 species of naidids (representing 14 of the 22 genera currently recognized) and 7 outgroup taxa were used. The combined data set were analyzed with Bayesian inference and Maximum Likelihood. The different phylogenetic analyses gave largely congruent trees, and they corroborate monophyly of Allonais. The results show that the genetic distances among the three geographic populations of A. inaequalis for COI are 0.0%-7.8% and for 28S vary between 0.0% and 0.8%. Allonais inaequalis falls into two groups, one from China, and one from Peru. We suggest that the Chinese morphotype more resembles A. inaequalis from India, where the species was first described, whereas the species in Peru is likely to be another species.

Exploring the effectiveness of DNA barcoding in species identification is prerequisite for biodiversity conservation and environmental monitoring. Aquatic oligochaete could serve as an excellent indicator in aquatic monitoring programs. However, few studies have examined the effectiveness of DNA barcoding in these specific organisms. The mitochondrial COI gene and nuclear ITS2 gene of 83 specimens belonging to 36 species of 18 genera were sequenced in this study. The results showed that there was a barcode gap between species of Naididae, and the intraspecific genetic distances of each species were smaller than interspecific genetic distances. The classification results of ABGD (Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery) were consistent with those of morphological identification except for Tubifex tubifex and Lumbriculus variegatus. All species were successfully distinguished in the phylogenetic tree based on ITS2 gene, which was coincident with morphological result. Our results provided evidence that DNA barcoding can be used as an effective and convenient tool for species identification of the family Naididae and even aquatic oligochaete.

Point detection (e.g., the centroid of the body) of species has been conducted in numerous studies. However, line detection (i.e., the line body shape) of elongated species has rarely been investigated under stressful conditions. We analyzed the line movements of an Oligochaeta Lumbriculus variegatus in response to treatments with a toxic chemical, copper sulfate, at low concentrations (0.01 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L). The automatic line-tracking system was devised to identify the movement of body segments (body length) and the movements of segments (i.e., the speed and angles between segments) were recorded before and after treatment. Total body length was shortened from 31.22 (±5.18) mm to 20.91 (±4.65) mm after the 0.1 mg/L treatment. The Shannon entropy index decreased from 0.44 (±0.1) to 0.28 (±0.08) after treatment. On the other hand, the body and movement segments did not significantly change after the 0.01 mg/L treatment. Sequential movements of test organisms were further analyzed with a recurrent self-organizing map (RSOM) to determine the pattern of time-series line movements. The RSOM made it feasible to classify sequential behaviors of indicator organisms and identify various continuous body movements under stressful conditions.

Identifying the biodiversity hotspots could enrich our understanding for biodiversity conservation. The Yangtze River Basin (YRB) is seriously threatened by multiple stressors leading to rapid biodiversity declines, thus urgently requires an integrated biodiversity conservation. Based on field samplings and the literatures, we described the macrozoobenthos compositions in different reaches and water bodies. We then predicted suitable habitat areas for the main groups, and linked those distributions with key environmental variables. Finally, we analyzed biodiversity hotspots (BHs) of macrozoobenthos and compared them with BHs of large aquatic animals (including fishes, Waterfowls, Yangtze finless porpoise, etc.), and discussed the applicability of selecting macrozoobenthos as biodiversity surrogate for biodiversity conservation. A total of 1033 taxa were recorded. From the upper to lower of YRB, genera number of Oligochaeta and Mollusca increased, of EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera) decreased, and of Chironomidae barely changed. In different water bodies, genera number of Oligochaeta, Mollusca, Chironomidae are the highest in lakes of the mid-lower YRB, while that of EPT are the highest in tributaries. Key environmental variables were water body types, elevation and max temperature of the warmest month. The total BHs areas of macrozoobenthos and large aquatic animals in the upper, and mid­lower YRB were 3.54 × 105 km2 and 2.95 × 105 km2, 2.95 × 105 km2 and 1.70 × 105 km2, respectively. The overlapping BHs were 2.0 × 105 km2 and 1.1 × 105 km2, respectively. The BHs of macrozoobenthos had a wider range, and included most BHs of large aquatic animals. Meanwhile, BHs of macrozoobenthos could indicate some habitats those were difficult to cover by selecting large aquatic animals as conservation targets, e.g., seasonal streams and water bodies that suffered from human disturbances. Based on these results, we argue that macrozoobenthos is a good biodiversity surrogate for biodiversity conservation.

To collect information about the community structure of zooplankton and to study how zooplankton respond to environmental conditions, zooplankton samples were collected from seven stations in a heavily polluted river (the Nanfei River, China). Samples were collected in March (spring) and June (summer) 2014, September (autumn) and December (winter) 2013. A total of 275 species of zooplankton belonging to 79 genera were identified, the total zooplankton abundance was 193 040 ind./L. Protozoa and rotifer comprised a high proportion of species number and abundance of zooplankton. The upper reaches had higher greater species number and lower abundance than those in middle and lower reaches, and at the entrance of Chaohu Lake. The species number and abundance of zooplankton were the highest in autumn, and the lowest in winter. The habitats of Nanfei River had high spatiotemporal heterogeneity, revealed by unweighted pair-group method using arithmetic averages (UPGMA) clustering analyses on environmental factors and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) clustering analyses on zooplankton abundance. In addition, water quality of upper reaches was better than the middle and lower reaches, and the entrance; and better in autumn than in other three seasons in terms of species number, abundance, Shannon-Wiener index, and Pielou evenness index. Results of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicate that the combination of water temperature, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, pH, chemical oxygen demanded, soluble phosphate, and conductance rate were responsible for the variations in zooplankton community structure. Results of the present study indicated that zooplankton communities of the Nanfei River had obvious spatial and temporal heterogeneity, and the environmental factors played an important role in the changes in zooplankton community in Nanfei River.

Freshwater biofouling threatens a variety of human activities, from the supply of water and energy to recreation. Several species of freshwater bryozoans are notorious for clogging pipes and filters but have been relatively poorly studied to date. We report, for the first time, a biofouling species of freshwater bryozoan, Pectinatella magnifica (Leidy, 1851), from several freshwater rivers, lakes and ponds in China. A complete description, national distribution and the fouling problems are provided. Exactly how Pectinatella magnifica arrived in China remains unclear, but anthropochory and zoochory are considered to be important dispersal pathways.

Using DNA-barcoding, we studied the diversity of invasive European earthworms in the south-western corner of Australia. We found six Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units belonging to five morphospecies: Aporrectodea caliginosa, A. trapezoides, Dendrobaena cf. attemsi, Eiseniella tetraedra and Octolasion cyaneum. These were variously collected from indigenous forests and/or alienated land. Two cryptic lineages were found within A. trapezoides, and high intraspecific genetic variation was also found within E. tetraedra-variation that had previously been documented in Europe. Our study demonstrates the usefulness of DNA-barcoding for the identification of earthworms, including cryptic species. Correct identification and high taxonomic resolution is crucial for the monitoring of cryptic diversity, detecting new introductions and monitoring spread of established exotic earthworms.

The middle Yangtze Reach is one of the most developed regions of China. As a result, most lakes in this area have suffered from eutrophication and serious environmental pollution during recent decades. The aquatic biodiversity in the lakes of the area is thus currently under significant threat from continuous human activities. Testate amoebae (TA) are benthic (rarely planktonic) microorganisms characterized by an agglutinated or autogenous shell. Owing to their high abundance, preservation potential in lacustrine sediments, and distinct response to environmental stress, they are increasingly used as indicators for monitoring water quality and reconstructing palaeoenvironmental changes. However this approach has not yet been developed in China. This study presents an initial assessment of benthic TA assemblages in eight lakes of Lake Donghu in the region of Wuhan, China. Testate amoeba community structure was most strongly correlated to water pH. In more alkaline conditions, communities were dominated by Centropyxis aculeata, Difflugia oblonga, Pontigulasia compressa, Pon. elisa and Lesquereusia modesta. These results are consistent with previous studies and show that TA could be useful for reconstructing past water pH fluctuations in China. To achieve this, the next step will be to expand the database and build transfer function models.

Two new species of Potamothrix (Oligochaeta: Tubificinae), P. rhytipeniatus, new species and P. aductus, new species, are described from Fuxian Lake and Xingyun Lake of Yunnan Province, southwest China. Potamothrix rhytipeniatus differs from congeners by its wrinkled penis surface and vasa deferentia entering the atrium subapically. Potamothrix aductus is distinguishable from all congeners by lacking a spermathecal duct. Hitherto, 31 species of freshwater oligochaetes have been recorded from Yunnan Province, including seven endemic species from plateau lakes.

Three new species of Tubificinae (Naididae, Oligochaeta), Varichaetadrilus vestibulatus n. sp., Aulodrilus apeniatus n. sp., and Ilyodrilus mesoprostatus n. sp., are reported from Fuxian Lake and Xingyun Lake of Yunnan Province, Southwest China. V. vestibulatus differs from its allies by possessing modified spermathecal chaetae and thinner cylindrical penial sheaths. A. apeniatus is unique in the genus by having no penis. I. mesoprostatus is distinguishable from congeners by its prostate glands joining middle portion of atria and having concave, cone-shaped cuticular penial sheaths. Twenty-eight species of freshwater oligochaetes have hitherto been recorded from Yunnan Province, including five endemic species from three plateau lakes.

Located in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in southwest China, Fuxian Lake covers an area of 211 km(2), with maximum depth of 155 m. It is known to have a unique fauna, including 14 described endemic species. In order to describe the zoobenthic community of the lake more completely, the present study was conducted from August 2002 to August 2003. Altogether 62 benthic taxa, including 22 oligochaetes, 21 molluscs and 18 insects were identified, of which the dominant taxa belonged to Potamothrix, Procladius and Paraprososthenia. The standing stocks of benthos were much higher in the littoral (824 ind/m(2) in density, 3.72 g/m(2) in biomass) than in the profundal region (23 ind/m(2) in density, 0.10 g/m(2) in biomass). Species richness was greatest in summer and standing stocks were larger in spring and summer than in other seasons. Analyses of functional feeding groups indicated that collector-gatherers and scrapers were predominant in entire lake. Stepwise multiple regression analysis demonstrated that the water depth is the most important factor affecting the distribution of macrozoobenthos. (C) 2008 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Poyang Lake (Poyang Hu) is located at the junction of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze (Changjiang) River, covering an area of 3283 km2. As one of the few lakes that are still freely connected with the river, it plays an important role in the maintenance of the unique biota of the Yangtze floodplain ecosystem. To promote the conservation of Poyang Lake, an investigation of the macrobenthos in the lake itself and adjoining Yangtze mainstream was conducted in 1997–1999. Altogether 58 benthic taxa, including 22 annelids, 8 mollusks, 26 arthropods, and 2 miscellaneous animals, were identified from quantitative samples. The benthic fauna shows a high diversity and a marine affinity. The standing crops of benthos in the lake were much higher than those in the river, being 659 individuals/m2 and 187.3 g/m2 (wet mass) in the main lake, and 549 individuals/m2 and 116.6 g/m2 in the lake outlet, but only 129 individuals/m2 and 0.4 g/m2 in the river. The dominant group in the lake was Mollusca, comprising 63.4% of the total in density and 99.5% in biomass. An analysis of the functional feeding structure indicated that collector-filterers and scrapers were predominant in the lake, up to 42.2% and 24.7% in density and 70.2% and 29.2% in biomass, respectively, while shredders and collector-gatherers were relatively common in the river. The present study was restricted to the northern outlet and the northeast part of Poyang Lake. A scrutiny is required for the remaining areas.

The Tibetan Plateau is considered to have a unique fauna of fish and invertebrates. However, little taxonomic work has been conducted on the aquatic Oligochaeta of Tibet, China. Based on the surveys of rivers and lakes in this region between 2010 and 2011, we recorded 25 species of oligochaetes belonging to 2 families and 15 genera. This paper provides an overview of the species composition of different waterbodies, the description of one new species, Nais longidentata sp. n., and re-descriptions of four previously described species. Hitherto, 30 species of aquatic oligochaetes have been recorded from Tibet. The oligochaete fauna is similar to that of the Holarctic, but has several endemic elements.

The fanning of Chinese mitten crab, a quality aquatic product in China and neighbouring Asian countries, has been developing rapidly in China since last decade. It reached a total yield of 3.4 X 10(5) tonnes in 2002. Due to the successive over-stocking year after year, many lakes in the mid-lower Yangtze Basin, the main farming area, are under deterioration, leading to a reduction of crab yield and quality, and, subsequently, a loss of fanning profits. Aiming at a normal development of crab culture and the sustainable use of lakes, an annual investigation dealing with lake environmental factors in relation to stocked crab populations was carried out at 20 farms in 4 lakes. The results show that the submersed macrophyte biomass (B-Mac) is the key factor affecting annual crab yield (CY). Using the ratio of Secchi depth to mean depth (Z(SD)/Z(M)), an easily measured parameter closely correlated to BMac, as driving variable, 10 regression models of maximal crab yields were generated (r(2) ranging 0.49-0.81). Based on the theory of MSY (Maximum Sustainable Yield), in combination with body-weight (BW) and recapture rate (RR) of adult crabs, a general optimal stocking model was eventually formulated. Submersed macrophytes in Yangtze lakes have experienced large-scale declines due to the increasing human activities during past decades. To seek the key factor that affects their growth, monthly investigations of submersed macrophytes were conducted in 20 regions of four Yangtze lakes during December, 2001-March, 2003. Analyses based on annual values show that the ratio of Secchi depth to mean depth is the key factor (50% of macrophyte biomass variability among these lakes is statistically explained). Further analyses also demonstrate that the months from March to June are not only the actively growing season for most macrophytes, but the key time the factor acts. Five key-time models yielding higher predictive power (r(2) reaches 0.75,0.76,0.77,0.69 and 0.81) are generated. A comparison between key-time models and traditional synchronic ones indicates that key-time models have higher predictive power. Analyses of transparency thresholds during macrophyte growing season and the limitations of the models are presented. Four species of Tubificinae (Oligochaeta: Naididae), Tubifex laxus n. sp., Tubifex gracilentus n. sp., Tubifex conicus He, Wang & Cui, 2012, and Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774) are reported from Tibet, China. T. laxus n. sp. is distinguished from allied species by relatively wide atria. T. gracilentus n. sp. differs from congeners in extremely thin and long penial sheaths. T. conicus is redefined as a species that lacks spermathecae. T. tubifex as redescribed here has slightly hirsute hair chaetae, cuticle rings around the penes and spermathecae with empty ampullae.

One new species of Naidinae (Oligochaeta, Naididae), Nais badia sp. n. and one new record species from China, Tubifex montanus Kowalewski, 1919 (Tubificinae) are found in southern Tibet. The new species is distinguished from congeners by its large area of reddish brown pigment in the anterior segments I–VIII, serrate hairs, pectinate needles with 1–2 intermediate teeth, ventral chaetae partly with 1–2 fine intermediate teeth and wave-like movements. The new material of the species Tubifex montanus differs slightly from the previous descriptions by its vas deferens entering atrium subapically, wide ental end of penial sheath and smooth hair chaetae.

Limnodrilus simplex sp. nov. (Oligochaeta: Naididae: Tubificinae) is described based on a single specimen from the mainstream of the Changjiang River near Anqing City, Anhui Province, China. The new species is assigned to Limnodrilus by the presence of long vasa deferentia, spindle-shaped atria with long ejaculatory ducts, large prostate glands, and thick cylindrical penial sheaths. It differs from its congeners in having simple-pointed chaetae and cuticularized penial sheaths without hoods. Limnodrilus simplex is closer to L. paramblysetus and L. amblysetus in possessing penial sheaths with relatively low length/maximum width ratio.

The Tibetan Plateau is considered to have a unique fauna of fish and invertebrates. However, little taxonomic work has been conducted on the aquatic Oligochaeta of Tibet, China. Based on the surveys of rivers and lakes in this region between 2010 and 2011, we recorded 25 species of oligochaetes belonging to 2 families and 15 genera. This paper provides an overview of the species composition of different waterbodies, the description of one new species, Nais longidentata sp. n., and re-descriptions of four previously described species. Hitherto, 30 species of aquatic oligochaetes have been recorded from Tibet. The oligochaete fauna is similar to that of the Holarctic, but has several endemic elements.

Potamothrix scleropenis sp. nov. (Tubificidae: Tubificinae) is described from the profundal zone (74 m) of Fuxian Lake, the deepest lake (up to 155 m) on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in China. The new species is assigned to Potamothrix because of its short vasa deferentia and its tubular atria without ejaculatory ducts and prostate glands. It differs from congeners by its cuticularized penis sheaths; bifurcated, strongly curved spermathecal chaetae; bifurcated lower prongs of bifids; and feathered hairs. P. scleropenis appears closely related to P. cekanovskajae Finogenova, 1972 and P. tudoranceai Sporka, 1994, since all the three species have homogeneous atria without prostate glands.

Two new species of Tubificinae (Oligochaeta: Naididae), Tubifex conicus n. sp., and Isochaetides palmatus n. sp., are re-ported from Tibet, China. T. conicus is unique in the genus by having spindle-shaped atria, large prostates and symmetri-cally conical penial sheaths. I. palmatus differs from its allies by possessing palmate dorsal chaetae, pectinate ventral chaetae and no penial sheaths.
