3. Constrained Ellipse Fitting for Efficient Parameter Mapping with Phase-cycled bSSFP MRI

Abstract

Balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) imaging enables high scan efficiency in MRI, but differs from conventional sequences in terms of elevated sensitivity to main field inhomogeneity and nonstandard T2/T1-weighted tissue contrast. To address these limitations, multiple bSSFP images of the same anatomy are commonly acquired with a set of different RF phase-cycling increments. Joint processing of phase-cycled acquisitions serves to mitigate sensitivity to field inhomogeneity. Recently phase-cycled bSSFP acquisitions were also leveraged to estimate relaxation parameters based on explicit signal models. While effective, these model-based methods often involve a large number of acquisitions (N~10-16), degrading scan efficiency. Here, we propose a new constrained ellipse fitting method (CELF) for parameter estimation with improved efficiency and accuracy in phase-cycled bSSFP MRI. CELF is based on the elliptical signal model framework for complex bSSFP signals; and it introduces geometrical constraints on ellipse properties to improve estimation efficiency, and dictionary-based identification to improve estimation accuracy. CELF generates maps of T1, T2, off-resonance and on-resonant bSSFP signal by employing a separate B1 map to mitigate sensitivity to flip angle variations. Our results indicate that CELF can produce accurate off-resonance and banding-free bSSFP maps with as few as N=4 acquisitions, while estimation accuracy for relaxation parameters is notably limited by biases from microstructural sensitivity of bSSFP imaging., Comment: Citation Information: DOI 10.1109/TMI.2021.3102852, IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging

4. Study of microwave resonances induced by bias lines of shunted Josephson junctions

Abstract

Bias lines routed over a ground plane naturally form microstrip lines associated with the presence of a capacitance. This can lead to unwanted resonances when coupled to Josephson junctions. This work presents an electrical model of a shunted Josephson junction with its bias lines and pads, fabricated with the 1 kA/cm$^2$ RSFQ niobium process of the FLUXONICS Foundry. A compact LCL T-model is used to simulate the microwave behavior of the bias line, predict resonances and design resonance-free superconducting circuits. The I-V characteristics of three shunted Josephson junctions have been obtained from time-domain simulations done with JSIM and show a good match with the global behavior and experimentally observed resonance at 230 GHz, measured at 4.2 K. Abstract

As the society becomes more dependent on the presence of electricity, the resilience of the power systems gains more importance. This paper develops a decision support method for distribution system operators to restore electricity after an earthquake to the maximum number of customers in the minimum expected duration. The proposed method employs Markov Decision Process (MDP) to determine the optimal restoration scheme. In order to determine the probability of the field component damage due to the earthquake, the Probability of Failure ($P_f$) of structures are calculated using the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) values recorded by observatories and earthquake research centers during the earthquake.

Abstract

This study examines the paintings of Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, two of the leading painters of British figurative painting, in terms of the relationship between representation and meaning. This qualitative research relies on data obtained from published written sources about Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, as well as an integrated review and analysis of artworks representing these artists’ artistic visions. Drawing on the discourses of the sociologist Stuart Hall regarding the relationship between representation and meaning, the study evaluates how the artworks' style, technique, and thematic characteristics affect the formation of meaning for the receiver. In the analyses on the relationship between representation and meaning carried out on the artists' works, readings were encountered that both artists' understanding of art showed similar characteristics. It has been observed that both artists' paintings, marked by an intense impasto technique, exhibit features bordering on abstraction, which blurs the identity characteristics of the depicted figures. This technique, along with ambiguous identity portrayals, creates sensory messages of pessimism, melancholy, and psychological depth for the viewer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Evaluation of treatment results of stereotactic body radiotherapy for spinal metastases: A single center experience

Abstract

Aim: To assess oncological outcomes and adverse events of patients receiving single or multi-fraction stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for spine metastases. Material and Method: Patients with any pathologically proven solid tumor histology who had SBRT to the spine for recurrent or metastatic disease between the years 2010 and 2021 at our department were identified from institutional database. Patient, tumor and treatment characteristics, and follow-up medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Local control (LC) and overall survival (OS) rates were calculated, and adverse events were evaluated. Results: A total of 47 patients were treated to 50 spine metastases. Median age was 53 years for all patients. Histologies included breast cancer (45%), non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC; 21%), prostate cancer (15%) and other types (19%). Median follow-up was 16 months for all patients. Of 47 patients, six (13%) developed local failure and 15 (32%) died without local failure. One and two-year actuarial LC rates were 90.1% and 83.6%, respectively. One and two-year OS rates were 75.1% and 62.7%, respectively. Twenty-two (47%) patients had pain before SBRT. Fifteen (68%) of them had complete or partial pain response at 3 months after SBRT. Vertebral compression fracture, which was grade 1 in severity according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE [v.4.03]), was observed in only one (2%) patient and it occurred 46 months after SBRT. No cases of treatment-related radiation myelopathy or any≥grade 3 RT induced acute or late toxicities occurred. Conclusion: This study supports that SBRT to the spine results in high LC without any significant toxicity. The results of ongoing phase 3 trials will highlight whether this high LC benefit reflects to survival in oligometastatic disease.

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, 2017 Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK) Hanehalkı Bütçe Anketi (HBA) verileri kullanılarak hanehalkının sigara tüketimini etkileyen değişkenlerin etkisinin lojistik regresyon analizi ile belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu nedenle, sigara tüketimine etki ettiği düşünülen değişkenler olarak; hanehalkı reisinin cinsiyeti, yaşı, eğitim düzeyi, medeni durumu, mesleği ile hanenin bir yıl içinde elde ettiği toplam kullanılabilir gelir kullanılmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilen sonuca göre, Türkiye’de hanehalkına ait meslek, gelir ve eğitim değişkenlerinin hanedeki sigara tüketimini etkilediği görülmektedir. Bu bağlamda, gençlere, düşük eğitimli ve gelir gruplarına odaklanılmasının sigara ile mücadelede uygulanan politikaların başarısını artıracağı beklenmektedir.

23. N95 MASKE KULLANIMININ RETİNA DAMAR DANSİTESİ ÜZERİNE ETKİSİNİN OPTİK KOHERENS TOMOGRAFİ ANJİYOGRAFİ İLE DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ.

Abstract

Objective This study aims to evaluate the effects of FFP2/N95 face mask use on oxygen saturation (SpO2), macula, and optic disc vessel density through optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in healthcare workers. Material and Method A total of 38 eyes from 19 volunteer healthcare workers were included in the study. Complete ophthalmic examinations were performed. Finger-type pulse oximetry measurements were used to assess the oxygen saturation also and Angiovue OCTA used for vascular density measurements before and after 4 hours of continuous N95 mask wear. Participants were instructed not to remove their masks during this period. Macular and optic disc vessel densities were evaluated using OCTA before and immediately after mask application and removal. Results Of the 19 participants, 15 were female and 4 were male. The mean age was 36,64 ± 9,3 years. The Snellen-Corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in all eyes, and intraocular pressure measurements were within normal limits. Oxygen saturation was 97,94% ± 0,8 before N95 mask wear, and 96,14% ± 1,8 after four hours of mask application. Significant increase in central macular thickness (CMT) (p<0,001), and significant decrease in parafoveal vessel densities in the superficial plexus and choriocapillaris in the fovea (p<0,05) were observed after mask usage. Significant increase in vessel densities of the superior and inferior radial peripapillary capillary plexus (RPC) was found after mask usage (p<0,05). Conclusion Oxygen saturation decreases after N95 mask usage. Vascular reactivity between the retina and choroid changes in response to increased CO2 levels and decreased O2 levels after mask usage. 1970'li yıllarda tüketimin ön planda tutulduğu, çevre ile ekonomik kalkınma arasındaki doğal bağın göz ardı edildiği kontrolsüz bir kalkınma sürecinin farkına varılması, AB'de çevreye ve iklime duyarlı bir kalkınma planı arayışına yol açmıştır. BM İklim Değişikliği Çerçeve Sözleşmesi süreci ile başlayan ve daha sonra AB temel mevzuatına dahil edilen kirleten öder ilkesi, bu kapsamda uygulanmaya başlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada, AB iklim değişikliği politikaları kapsamında uygulanan kirleten öder ilkesi ele alınmaktadır. Kirleten öder ilkesi; AB'nin iklim değişikliği ile mücadelesi kapsamında ele alınacak ve karbon (CO2) emisyonlarının neden olduğu negatif dışsallıkların içselleştirilmesindeki rolü tartışılacaktır., 1970s, the realization that an uncontrolled development process in which consumption was prioritized and the natural link between the environment and economic development were ignored led to the search for an environment- and climate-sensitive development plan in the EU. 29. ASSET TAX AS A MEASURE TAKEN AGAINST BLACK MARKETISM DURING THE WAR TURKEY

Abstract

1 Eylül 1939 tarihinde Hitler Almanyası’nın Polonya’yı işgal etmesiyle başlayan İkinci Dünya Savaşı her yönüyle yıkıma neden olmuştur. Avrupa başta olmak üzere dünyanın çoğu yerinde kanlı geçen bu savaşta Türkiye tarafsız kalmıştır. Türkiye’nin bu tarafsızlığı ona askeri kayıp yaşatmazken büyük ekonomik kayıplar yaşatmıştır. Savaş nedenle genç nüfusunu üretimde çeken Türkiye, bunları silahaltına almıştır. Bir milyondan fazla genç erkeğin silahaltına alınması ülkede üretim sıkıntısı yaşatmış ve bu da 1942 yılından itibaren bir katılığına neden olmuştur. Böylece bu sıkıntılı yıllarda halkın temel gıda ihtiyacını stoklayan karaborsacılar büyük servetlere sahip olmuşlardır. Karaborsacılığın bu denli yaygınlaşması üzerine Başbakan Şükrü Saraçoğlu, bu yolla zengin olan kişilerin tespit edilmesi için emir vermiştir. Bu kişilerin tespit edilmesiyle birlikte 12 Kasım 1942 yılında Varlık Vergisi devreye konulmuş ve bu vergiyle karaborsacılıktan zengin olan kişilerden ağır vergiler alınmaya başlanmıştır. 114.368 kişiye uygulanan bu verginin ödeme süresi kısa tutulmuş ve vergi borcunu bu süre içerisinde ödemeyen mükellefler bedeni işlerde çalıştırılmışlardır., The Second World War, which began with the invasion of Poland by Hitler's Germany on September 1, 1939, caused destruction in all aspects. After black market is became so widespread, Prime Minister Sükrü Saraçoglu give orders to identify the people who were rich in this way. With the identification of these people, the Asset Tax was introduced on November 12, 1942, and heavy taxes began to be levied on people who were rich from black marketism with this tax. the payment period of this tax applied to 114,368 people was kept short and taxpayers who did not pay their tax debts during this period were employed in physical jobs.

Abstract

İçinde bulunduğumuz yüzyılda her alanda yaşanan hızlı değişim, eğitim alanında da kendini hissettirmiş, bizlere yenilenmenin ve değişimin zorunlu olduğunu göstermiştir. Belli sınıf düzeylerinde gerçekleştirilen ve belli yeterlilikleri ölçmeyi hedefleyen PISA, TIMMS, PIRLS ve TALIS gibi uluslararası düzeyde gerçekleştirilen sınavlardan elde edilen sonuçların, ülkelerin eğitim sistemlerindeki eksikliklerini yapılandırmalarına destek sağladığı bilinmektedir. Bu sınavlarda temel amaçlardan belki de en önemlisi, öğrencilerin okulda edinmiş oldukları bilgi ve becerilerini günlük yaşamlarına ne ölçüde aktarabildiklerini ölçmektir. Amacı ortaokul sekizinci sınıf düzeyindeki öğrencileri ilgi ve yeteneklerine göre bir sonraki öğretim seviyesine hazırlamak olan Ortaöğretim Kurumlarına İlişkin Merkezi Sınav sorularında da bu doğrultuda gerçekleştirilen yapılanmalar söz konusudur. Bu çalışmada, 2021 yılı Haziran ayında Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı tarafından gerçekleştirilmiş olan Liselere Geçiş Sistemi (LGS) sınavı matematik alt testinde yer alan yirmi adet sorunun ortaokul Matematik Dersi Öğretim Programı’nda yer alan öğrenme alanları ve yenilenmiş Bloom taksonomisi bilgi boyutu ve bilişsel süreç boyutuna göre incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda Ölçme, Değerlendirme ve Sınav Hizmetleri Genel Müdürlüğü resmi internet adresinden temin edilen 2021-LGS merkezi sınavı A-B kitapçıklarında yer alan matematik alt testi soruları araştırma dokümanlarının kaynağını teşkil etmiştir. Araştırmacılar ve uzmanlar tarafından doküman incelemesiyöntemi kullanılarak elde edilen araştırma verilerinin analizinde betimsel istatistikten yararlanılmıştır. Öğrenme alanları ve yenilenmiş Bloom taksonomisi boyutlarına ait frekans ve yüzde değerleri tablolara aktarılarak yorumlanmıştır. Çalışmanın veri analizi sonucunda elde edilen bulgulara göre en fazla Sayılar ve İşlemler öğrenme alanında soru olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca soruların sıklıkla yenilenmiş Bloom taksonomisi bilişsel süreç boyutunda uygulama, analiz ve değerlendirme basamağında, bilgi boyutunda ise işlemsel bilgi boyutunda yer aldığı belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın ortaya koyduğu bu sonuçlar çerçevesinde paydaşlara öneriler sunulmuştur.

Abstract

Bu çalışma, paternalist devlet (müdahaleci devlet) anlayışı çerçevesinde düzenlenen sigara uyarı etiketlerinin sigarayı bırakma davranışı üzerindeki etkisini dikkat, negatif etki, sosyal etkileşim, uyarıyı düşünme değişkenleri ile incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla sigara kullanan Gümüşhane Üniversitesi öğrencilerinden kolayda örnekleme yöntemi ile seçilen 209 katılımcının yer aldığı çalışma yapısal eşitlik modeli ile analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmadan elde edilen sonuçlar; sosyal etkileşim ile uyarıyı düşünme; uyarı ve dikkat; negatif etki ve sosyal etkileşim arasında pozitif ve güçlü bir ilişkinin olduğunu göstermektedir. Ek olarak dikkat, uyarıyı düşünme, negatif etki ve sosyal etkileşim değişkenlerinin sigarayı bırakma davranışı üzerinde dolaylı ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir etkiye sahip olduğu görülmüştür., This study aims to measure the effect of warning labels on cigarette packages on smoking cessation behavior with the variables of attention, negative effect, social interaction, and stimulus thinking within the framework of the paternalistic approach. The study, which included 209 smokers studying at Gumushane University, was analyzed with the structural equation model. The results obtained from the study show that there is a positive and strong relationship between social interaction and stimulus thinking, alert and attention, negative influence and social interaction. In addition, it is seen that the variables of attention, stimulus thinking, negative effect and social interaction have an indirect and statistically significant effect on smoking cessation behavior.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to extensively analyze failure patterns of patients who received single or multi-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) to the surgical cavity and to identify prognostic factors for recurrence and survival metrics. METHODS Patients with brain metastases who underwent surgical resection and then had SRS to the surgical cavity, between 2010 and 2021, at our department were identified. Local failure (LF), distant failure (DF), leptomeningeal disease (LMD), overall survival (OS), and salvage whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) rates were calculated. Patient or treatment-related variables were evaluated for association with LF, DF, LMD, and OS. RESULTS Fifty-three patients with total of 54 operated metastases were identified. The median follow-up period was 13 months. Cumulative incidence rates of LF, LMD, and DF were 15%, 11%, and 37% at 1 year, respectively. Salvage WBRT was employed in 13 (26%) patients. DF was less frequent in patients with breast cancer primary compared to patients with other primaries (p=0.048, Hazard ratio [HR]:0.28) on univariate analysis. One-year OS rate was 54%. Median survival was 17 months. Eastern cooperative oncology group (ECOG) 0 performance status (p=0.0113; HR:0.328), being without active extracranial metastasis at the time of brain SRS (p=0.0035; HR:0.321), and metachronous brain metastases (p=0.0191; HR:0.399) were determined as statistically significant prognostic factors of survival on multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION SRS to surgical cavity seems optimal treatment modality especially for the patients with one of the following factors including ECOG 0 performance status, not having an active extracranial metastasis at the time of SRS, and metachronous brain metastases. 39. Molecular genetic etiology by whole exome sequence analysis in cases with familial type 1 diabetes mellitus without HLA haplotype predisposition or incomplete predisposition.

Abstract

Familial transmission is observed in approximately 10% of cases with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The most important gene determining susceptibility is the human leukocyte antigen complex (HLA) located on chromosome 6. More than 50 susceptible loci are associated with T1DM susceptibility have been identified in genes other than HLA. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the molecular genetic etiology by whole-exome sequence (WES) analysis in cases with familial T1DM with no or weakly detected HLA tissue type susceptibility. We aimed to identify new genes responsible for the development of type 1 diabetes and to reveal new genes that have not been shown in the literature before. Cases with at least one T1DM diagnosis in first-degree relatives were included in the study. In the first step, HLA DQ2 and DQ8 loci, which are known to be associated with T1DM susceptibility, were investigated by. In the second step, the presence of variants that could explain the situation was investigated by WES analysis in patients who were negative for both HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8 haplotypes, HLA DQ2 negative, HLA DQ8 positive, and HLA DQ2 positive and HLA DQ8 negative patients. The mean age and duration of diabetes of the 30 cases (Girl/Male: 17/13) were 14.9 ± 6 and 7.56 ± 3.84 years, respectively. There was consanguineous marriage in 5 (16%) of the families. As a result of filtering all exome sequence analysis data of two cases with DQ2 (DQB1*02) (−) and DQ8 (DQB1*03:02) (−), seven cases with DQ2 (DQB1*02) (+) and DQ8 (DQB1*03:02) (−), and one case with DQ2 (DQB1*02) (−) and DQ8 (DQB1*03:02) (+), seven different variants in seven different genes were detected in five cases. The pathogenicity of the detected variants were determined according to the "American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG)" criteria. These seven variants detected were evaluated as high-score VUS (Variants of unknown/uncertain significance). In the segregation study conducted for the mutation in the POLG gene detected in case 5, this variant was detected in the mother of the case and his brother with T1DM. Segregation studies are ongoing for variants detected in other affected individuals in the family. In conclusion, in this study, seven different variants in seven different genes were detected in five patients by WES analysis in familial T1DM patients with no or weak HLA tissue type susceptibility. These seven variants detected were evaluated as high-score VUS. POLG might be a novel candidate gene responsible for susceptibility to T1DM. Non-HLA genes directly responsible for the development of T1DM were not detected in any of the cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study aims to measure the effect of warning labels on cigarette packages on smoking cessation behavior with the variables of attention, negative effect, social interaction, and stimulus thinking within the framework of the paternalistic approach. The study, which included 209 smokers studying at Gumushane University, was analyzed with the structural equation model. The results obtained from the study show that there is a positive and strong relationship between social interaction and stimulus thinking, alert and attention, negative influence and social interaction. In addition, it is seen that the variables of attention, stimulus thinking, negative effect and social interaction have an indirect and statistically significant effect on smoking cessation behavior. Abstract

This study aims to determine the variables affecting the cigarette consumption of households by employing logistic regression analysis based on the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) 2017 Household Budget Survey (HBA). In this model, the variables that affect cigarette consumption, namely, gender, age, education level, marital status, occupation, and the total disposable income earned by the household head in a year, are used. The results of this study indicate that variables of income, occupation and education of the household head affect cigarette consumption in Turkey. In this context, it is expected that focusing on young people, low educated and income groups in the fight against smoking will increase the success of the policies implemented., Bu çalışmada, 2017 Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK) Hanehalkı Bütçe Anketi (HBA) verileri kullanılarak hanehalkının sigara tüketimini etkileyen değişkenlerin etkisinin lojistik regresyon analizi ile belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu nedenle, sigara tüketimine etki ettiği düşünülen değişkenler olarak; hanehalkı reisinin cinsiyeti, yaşı, eğitim düzeyi, medeni durumu, mesleği ile hanenin bir yıl içinde elde ettiği toplam kullanılabilir gelir kullanılmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilen sonuca göre, Türkiye’de hanehalkına ait meslek, gelir ve eğitim değişkenlerinin hanedeki sigara tüketimini etkilediği görülmektedir. Bu bağlamda, gençlere, düşük eğitimli ve gelir gruplarına odaklanılmasının sigara ile mücadelede uygulanan politikaların başarısını artıracağı beklenmektedir.
