The reactionary religious leaders shot as were leaders of the Yi Kuan Tao, one of North China's most powerful secret societies. The secret society has long played as vital a role in Chinese society as the machine in American city politics. Traditionally the purpose of these societies has been to protect their members property against public disorder or the exactions of public officials. Although usually surrounded by an aura of mystic symbols, the societies have used professional thugs to obtain their ends and have often drawn their income from the protection of brothels, gambling houses and the like.
