Abstract

Gerromorpha Popov, 1971 is a fascinating and diverse insect lineage that evolved about 200 Mya to spend their entire life cycle on the air–water interface and have since colonized all types of aquatic habitats. The subfamily Halobatinae Bianchi, 1896 is particularly interesting because some species have adapted to life on the open ocean—a habitat where insects are very rarely found. Several attempts have been made to reconstruct the phylogenetic hypotheses of this subfamily, but the use of a few partial gene sequences recovered only a handful of well-supported relationships, thus limiting evolutionary inferences. Fortunately, the emergence of high-throughput sequencing technologies has enabled the recovery of more genetic markers for phylogenetic inference. We applied genome skimming to obtain mitochondrial and nuclear genes from low-coverage whole-genome sequencing of 85 specimens for reconstructing a well-supported phylogeny, with particular emphasis on Halobatinae. Our study confirmed that Metrocorini Matsuda, 1960, is paraphyletic, whereas Esakia Lundblad, 1933, and Ventidius Distant, 1910, are more closely related to Halobatini Bianchi, 1896, than Metrocoris Mayr, 1865, and Eurymetra Esaki, 1926. We also found that Ventidius is paraphyletic and in need of a taxonomic revision. Ancestral state reconstruction suggests that Halobatinae evolved progressively from limnic to coastal habitats, eventually attaining a marine lifestyle, especially in the genus Halobates Eschscholtz, 1822, where the oceanic lifestyle evolved thrice. Our results demonstrate that genome skimming is a powerful and straightforward approach to recover genetic loci for robust phylogenetic analysis in non-model insects.

Abstract

The confused and intertwined identities and taxonomic histories of three Asian freshwater crab genera, Potamiscus Alcock, 1909, Ranguna Bott, 1966, and Dromothelphusa Naiyanetr, 1992, are reviewed and clarified. Ranguna, long assumed to be a junior synonym of Potamiscus (itself, until 2003, considered a junior synonym of Potamon Savigny, 1816), is recognised here as a valid genus, with the sole representative, Ranguna rangoonensis (Rathbun, 1904), shown to differ from Potamiscus species by carapace, third maxilliped, male thoracic sternal, male pleon and gonopod structures. Potamon (Potamiscus) decourcyi Kemp, 1913, is also transferred to Ranguna. The only known species of Dromothelphusa (originally established to replace Ranguna), D. longipes (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869), is known mostly from very old and dried museum material and treated here in detail based on fresh-collected adult male specimens. Abstract

We report the discovery of several specimens of the genus Encheloclarias Herre & Myers, 1937, in Singapore, from Nee Soon Swamp Forest in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Morphological comparisons with type specimens of various Encheloclarias species revealed the Singapore specimens belong to Encheloclarias kelioides Ng & Lim, 1993. This discovery represents a range extension for the species, previously understood to be restricted to peat swamps in eastern Peninsular Malaysia and possibly central Sumatra. A redescription of E. kelioides and comparison against its congeners are provided. Its ecology and conservation status globally and locally are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Commodity‐driven forest conversion represents one of the most severe threats to freshwater biodiversity in Southeast Asia, notably causing population declines and the extinction of freshwater fish species.Although a variety of freshwater taxa are likely to be adversely affected by forest conversion, little is known about the impact on ecologically and economically important invertebrates such as decapod crustaceans.This study evaluated the impact of forest conversion and land‐use change on freshwater Macrobrachium shrimp species, using species richness, abundance, and environmental data collected from 20 streams across southern Peninsular Malaysia. Streams were located in three types of landscape: forest; oil palm plantation; and mixed land use, comprising young secondary forest, small‐scale plantations, patches of open and sparsely vegetated areas, and agricultural fields and clearings.Generalized linear models showed that even incomplete change from forest habitats to mixed land use and oil palm plantation resulted in significantly lower Macrobrachium native species richness and higher non‐native species abundance. Native species richness was positively correlated with canopy cover, leaf litter, substrate size, and dissolved oxygen, and was negatively correlated with water temperature and conductivity. Native species richness was also negatively correlated with non‐native species abundance, with non‐native species abundance increasing along the human disturbance gradient.These results highlight the need for riparian habitat protection to conserve native Macrobrachium and limit the spread of non‐native species. A management priority should be to maintain or restore optimum instream habitat conditions for shrimps, which would also benefit fish and other benthic macroinvertebrates. Suitable riparian management requires substantial support and funding from multiple stakeholders, but it can be aligned with other catchment‐based strategies to optimize the use of limited resources available for freshwater biodiversity conservation.
