Abstract: We present an analysis of the first two XRISM/Resolve spectra of the well-known Seyfert-1.5 active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 4151, obtained in 2023 December. Our work focuses on the nature of the narrow Fe K _α emission line at 6.4 keV, the strongest and most common X-ray line observed in AGN. The total line is found to consist of three components. Even the narrowest component of the line is resolved with evident Fe K _α _,1 (6.404 keV) and K _α _,2 (6.391 keV) contributions in a 2:1 flux ratio, fully consistent with neutral gas with negligible bulk velocity. Subject to the limitations of our models, the narrowest and intermediate-width components are consistent with emission from optically thin gas, suggesting that they arise in a disk atmosphere and/or wind. Modeling the three line components in terms of Keplerian broadening, they are readily associated with (1) the inner wall of the “torus,” (2) the innermost optical “broad-line region” (or “X-ray BLR”), and (3) a region with a radius of r ≃ 100 GM / c ^2 that may signal a warp in the accretion disk. Viable alternative explanations of the broadest component include a fast-wind component and/or scattering; however, we find evidence of variability in the narrow Fe K _α line complex on timescales consistent with small radii. The best-fit models are statistically superior to simple Voigt functions, but when fit with Voigt profiles the time-averaged lines are consistent with a projected velocity broadening of FWHM $\,=\,{1600}_{-200}^{+400}\,\mathrm{km}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$ . Overall, the resolution and sensitivity of XRISM show that the narrow Fe K line in AGN is an effective probe of all key parts of the accretion flow, as it is currently understood. We discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of AGN accretion, future studies with XRISM, and X-ray-based black hole mass measurements.

Abstract: We present multiwavelength polarization measurements of the luminous blazar Mrk 501 over a 14 month period. The 2–8 keV X-ray polarization was measured with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) with six 100 ks observations spanning from 2022 March to 2023 April. Each IXPE observation was accompanied by simultaneous X-ray data from NuSTAR, Swift/XRT, and/or XMM-Newton. Complementary optical–infrared polarization measurements were also available in the B , V , R , I , and J bands, as were radio polarization measurements from 4.85 GHz to 225.5 GHz. Among the first five IXPE observations, we did not find significant variability in the X-ray polarization degree and angle with IXPE. However, the most recent sixth observation found an elevated polarization degree at >3 σ above the average of the other five observations. The optical and radio measurements show no apparent correlations with the X-ray polarization properties. Throughout the six IXPE observations, the X-ray polarization degree remained higher than, or similar to, the R -band optical polarization degree, which remained higher than the radio value. This is consistent with the energy-stratified shock scenario proposed to explain the first two IXPE observations, in which the polarized X-ray, optical, and radio emission arises from different regions.

Abstract: We present X-ray polarimetry observations from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) of three low spectral peak and one intermediate spectral peak blazars, namely 3C 273, 3C 279, 3C 454.3, and S5 0716+714. For none of these objects was IXPE able to detect X-ray polarization at the 3 σ level. However, we placed upper limits on the polarization degree at ∼10%–30%. The undetected polarizations favor models where the X-ray band is dominated by unpolarized photons upscattered by relativistic electrons in the jets of blazars, although hadronic models are not completely eliminated. We discuss the X-ray polarization upper limits in the context of our contemporaneous multiwavelength polarization campaigns.

4. Optical Variability of Blazars in the Tomo-e Gozen Northern Sky Transient Survey

Abstract: We studied the optical variability of 241 BL Lacertae (BL Lacs) and 83 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) from the 4LAC catalog using data from the Tomo-e Gozen Northern Sky Transient Survey, with ∼50 epochs per blazar on average. We excluded blazars whose optical variability may be underestimated due to the influence of their host galaxy based on their optical luminosity ( L _O ). FSRQs with γ -ray photon index greater than 2.6 exhibit very low optical variability, and their distribution of standard deviation of repeated photometry is significantly different from that of the other FSRQs (Kolmogorov–Smirnov test p -value equal to 5 × 10 ^−6 ). Among a sample of blazars at any particular cosmological epoch, those with lower γ -ray luminosity ( L _γ ) tend to have lower optical variability, and those FSRQs with a γ -ray photon index greater than 2.6 tend to have low L _γ . We also measured the structure function of optical variability and found that the amplitude of the structure function for FSRQs is higher than previously measured and higher than that of BL Lacs at multiple time lags. Additionally, the amplitude of the structure function of FSRQs with high γ -ray photon index is significantly lower than that of FSRQs with low γ -ray photon index. The structure function of FSRQs of high γ -ray photon index shows a characteristic timescale of more than 10 days, which may be the variability timescale of the accretion disk. In summary, we infer that the optical component of FSRQs with high γ -ray photon index may be dominated by the accretion disk.

Abstract: GRS 1734-292 is a radio-quiet galaxy, exhibiting neither intense starburst nor jet activities. However, Fermi-LAT detected this object in the GeV band. The origin of nonthermal activity in this Seyfert galaxy is an intriguing question. We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of GRS 1734-292 at frequencies of 97.5, 145, and 225 GHz. These observations confirmed the millimeter excess within the central ⪅100 pc region and its time variability based on two separate observations conducted 4 days apart. Abstract: Observations of linear polarization in the 2–8 keV energy range with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) explore the magnetic field geometry and dynamics of the regions generating nonthermal radiation in relativistic jets of blazars. These jets, particularly in blazars whose spectral energy distribution peaks at X-ray energies, emit X-rays via synchrotron radiation from high-energy particles within the jet. IXPE observations of the X-ray-selected BL Lac–type blazar 1ES 1959+650 on 2022 May 3–4 showed a significant linear polarization degree of Π _x = 8.0% ± 2.3% at an electric-vector position angle ψ _x = 123° ± 8°. However, on 2022 June 9–12, only an upper limit of Π _x ≤ 5.1% could be derived (at the 99% confidence level). The degree of optical polarization at that time, Π _O ∼ 5%, is comparable to the X-ray measurement. We investigate possible scenarios for these findings, including temporal and geometrical depolarization effects. Unlike some other X-ray-selected BL Lac objects, there is no significant chromatic dependence of the measured polarization in 1ES 1959+650, and its low X-ray polarization may be attributed to turbulence in the jet flow with dynamical timescales shorter than 1 day.

Abstract: We report the first >99% confidence detection of X-ray polarization in BL Lacertae. During a recent X-ray/ γ -ray outburst, a 287 ks observation (2022 November 27–30) was taken using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), together with contemporaneous multiwavelength observations from the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory and XMM-Newton in soft X-rays (0.3–10 keV), NuSTAR in hard X-rays (3–70 keV), and optical polarization from the Calar Alto and Perkins Telescope observatories. Our contemporaneous X-ray data suggest that the IXPE energy band is at the crossover between the low- and high-frequency blazar emission humps. The source displays significant variability during the observation, and we measure polarization in three separate time bins. Contemporaneous X-ray spectra allow us to determine the relative contribution from each emission hump. We find >99% confidence X-ray polarization ${{\rm{\Pi }}}_{2\mbox{--}4\mathrm{keV}}={21.7}_{-7.9}^{+5.6} \% $ and electric vector polarization angle ψ _2–4keV = −28.°7 ± 8.°7 in the time bin with highest estimated synchrotron flux contribution. We discuss possible implications of our observations, including previous IXPE BL Lacertae pointings, tentatively concluding that synchrotron self-Compton emission dominates over hadronic emission processes during the observed epochs.

Abstract: Blazars are a class of jet-dominated active galactic nuclei with a typical double-humped spectral energy distribution. It is of common consensus that the synchrotron emission is responsible for the low frequency peak, while the origin of the high frequency hump is still debated. The analysis of X-rays and their polarization can provide a valuable tool to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the origin of high-energy emission of blazars. We report the first observations of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, from which an upper limit to the polarization degree Π _X < 12.6% was found in the 2–8 keV band. We contemporaneously measured the polarization in radio, infrared, and optical wavelengths. Our multiwavelength polarization analysis disfavors a significant contribution of proton-synchrotron radiation to the X-ray emission at these epochs. Instead, it supports a leptonic origin for the X-ray emission in BL Lac.

9. Narrow Fe–Kα Reverberation Mapping Unveils the Deactivated Broad-line Region in a Changing-look Active Galactic Nucleus

Abstract: “Changing-look active galactic nuclei” (CLAGNs) are known to change their apparent types between types 1 and 2, usually accompanied by a drastic change in their luminosity on timescales of years. However, it is still unclear whether materials in broad-line regions (BLRs) in CLAGNs appear and disappear during the type-transition or remain at the same location while the line production is simply activated or deactivated. Here we present our X-ray–optical monitoring results of a CLAGN, NGC 3516, by Suzaku, Swift, and ground telescopes, with our primary focus on the narrow Fe–K α emission line, which is an effective probe of the BLR materials. We detected significant variations of the narrow Fe–K α line on a timescale of tens of days during the type-2 (faint) phase in 2013–2014, and conducted “narrow Fe–K α reverberation mapping,” comparing its flux variation with those of the X-ray continuum from a corona and B -band continuum from an accretion disk. We derived, as a result, a time lag of ${10.1}_{-5.6}^{+5.8}$ days (1 σ errors) for the Fe–K α line behind the continuum, which is consistent with the location of the BLR determined in optical spectroscopic reverberation mapping during the type-1 (bright) phase. This finding shows that the BLR materials remained at the same location without emitting optical broad lines during the type-2 phase. Considering the drastic decrease of the radiation during the type-transition, our result is possibly inconsistent with the hotly discussed formation models of the BLR, which propose that the radiative pressure from an accretion disk should be the main driving force.

10. Polarimetric Monitoring of Jets with Kanata Telescope

Abstract: The polarization of relativistic jets is of interest for the understanding of their origin, confinement, and propagation. However, even though numerous measurements have been performed, the mechanisms behind jet variability, creation, and composition are still debated. We have performed simultaneous gamma-ray and optical photopolarimetry observations of 45 blazars with the Kanata telescope since July 2008 to investigate the mechanisms of variability and search for a basic relation between the several subclasses of relativistic jets. Consequently, we found that a correlation between the gamma-ray and optical flux might be related to gamma-ray luminosity, and the maximum polarization degree might be related to gamma-ray luminosity or the ratio of gamma-ray to optical flux. These results imply that low gamma-ray luminosity blazars emit from multiple regions.

11. Scaling relations of X-ray luminous clusters in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program field

Abstract: We present the XMM-Newton X-ray analysis of 19 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters of low-to-mid redshift ($< 0.4$) selected from the MCXC cluster catalogue in the Hyper Supri%survey as the first work in our series paper. We derive the hydrostatic equilibrium mass and study scaling relations using i) the whole sample, ii) only relaxed clusters and iii) only disturbed clusters. When considering the whole sample, the $Y_{\rm X}$-$M_{\rm tot}$ and $M_{\rm gas}$-$M_{\rm tot}$ relations agree with self-similarity. In terms of morphology, relaxed clusters show a flatter relation in $L_{\rm X,ce}$-$M_{\rm tot}$, $L_{\rm X,bol}$-$M_{\rm tot}$, $L_{\rm X,ce}$-$T$, $L_{\rm bol,ce}$-$T$, $M_{\rm gas}$-$M_{\rm tot}$ and $Y_{\rm X}$-$M_{\rm tot}$. The $L_{\rm bol,ce}$-$M_{\rm tot}$, $L_{\rm X,ce}$-$M_{\rm tot}$ $L_{\rm bol,ce}$-$T$ and $L_{\rm X,ce}$-$T$ relations show a slope $\sim$3$\sigma$ steeper. The residuals in the $M_{\rm gas}$-$M_{\rm tot}$ and $T$-$M_{\rm tot}$ relations and the intrinsic covariance between $M_{\rm gas}$ and $T$ show hints of positive correlation, casting doubt on whether the $Y_{\rm X}$ parameter is a truly low scatter mass proxy. The $M_{\rm gas}$-$M_{\rm tot}$ and $T$-$M_{\rm tot}$ plots color-coded with the offset of the $L_{\rm X,ce}$-$M_{\rm tot}$ relation show these two relations to be brightness dependent but not the $L_{\rm X,ce}$-$T$ relation, suggesting relations involving $M_{\rm tot}$ are biased due to sample selection based on luminosity. Following the work which studied an optical sample and combining our result with literature studies, we find the $M_{\rm tot}$ derived not using mass proxies deviate from $L_{\rm X}$ $\propto$ $M_{\rm gas}^{2}M_{\rm tot}^{-1}$ and $M_{\rm tot}$ based on hydrostatic equilibrium are more massive than what is expected by their relation using caustic masses. Abstract: The X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission, XRISM, is currently scheduled to launch in 2022 with the objective of building on the brief, but significant, successes of the ASTRO-H (Hitomi) mission in solving outstanding astrophysical questions using high resolution X-ray spectroscopy. The XRISM Science Operations Team (SOT) consists of the JAXA-led Science Operations Center (SOC) and NASA-led Science Data Center (SDC), which work together to optimize the scientific output from the Resolve high-resolution spectrometer and the Xtend wide-field imager through planning and scheduling of observations, processing and distribution of data, development and distribution of software tools and the calibration database (CaldB), support of ground and in-flight calibration, and support of XRISM users in their scientific investigations of the energetic universe. Here, we summarize the roles and responsibilities of the SDC and its current status and future plans. The Resolve instrument poses particular challenges due to its unprecedented combination of high spectral resolution and throughput, broad spectral coverage, and relatively small field-of-view and large pixel-size. We highlight those challenges and how they are being met.

14. Optical and near-infrared photometric and polarimetric monitoring at flaring state of BL Lacertae in 2020–2021

Abstract: BL Lacertae (BL Lac) was in an unprecedented bright state since 2020 August. We have conducted long-term photometric and polarimetric observations of BL Lac in optical and near-infrared (NIR) bands using the Kanata telescope in the Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory. BL Lac had simultaneously brightened in the NIR, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands during the brightening period. There were two peaks of brightness in the optical and NIR bands. The degree of polarization and electric-vector position angle (EVPA) were also found to have fluctuated in the optical and NIR bands. A bluer-when-brighter trend was observed between the optical and NIR bands during the entire period of our observation. Furthermore, during the first bright period, the EVPA became parallel to the position angle of the jet. On the other hand, the polarization during the second brightening showed a different behavior from that during the first brightening. The brightenings can be explained by a combination of a shock acceleration in which a shock was generated with the perpendicular-direction shock front of the jet and a variation of the inclination angle.

It is of common consensus that the synchrotron emission is responsible for the low frequency peak, while the origin of the high frequency hump is still debated. The analysis of X-rays and their polarization can provide a valuable tool to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the origin of high-energy emission of blazars. We report the first observations of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, from which an upper limit to the polarization degree ΠX < 12.6% was found in the 2–8 keV band. We contemporaneously measured the polarization in radio, infrared, and optical wavelengths. Our multiwavelength polarization analysis disfavors a significant contribution of proton-synchrotron radiation to the X-ray emission at these epochs. Instead, it supports a leptonic origin for the X-ray emission in BL Lac. © 2022. The Author(s). Abstract: In this multi-messenger astronomy era, all the observational probes are improving their sensitivities and overall performance. The Focusing on Relativistic universe and Cosmic Evolution (FORCE) mission, the product of a JAXA/NASA collaboration, will reach a 10 times higher sensitivity in the hard X-ray band ($E >$ 10~keV) in comparison with any previous hard X-ray missions, and provide simultaneous soft X-ray coverage. FORCE aims to be launched in the early 2030s, providing a perfect hard X-ray complement to the ESA flagship mission Athena. FORCE will be the most powerful X-ray probe for discovering obscured/hidden black holes and studying high energy particle acceleration in our Universe and will address how relativistic processes in the universe are realized and how these affect cosmic evolution. FORCE, which will operate over 1--79 keV, is equipped with two identical pairs of supermirrors and wideband X-ray imagers. The mirror and imager are connected by a high mechanical stiffness extensible optical bench with alignment monitor systems with a focal length of 12~m. 23. Relationship between Gamma-ray loudness and X-ray spectra of Radio Galaxies

Abstract: The {\it Fermi} satellite has detected $\sim$60 radio galaxies (RGs). In this study, we investigate the difference in the properties of X-ray spectra between GeV-loud RGs and GeV-quiet RGs. Our sample comprises 68 objects: 36 RGs detected with {\it Fermi} and 32 RGs not detected with gamma rays. We analyzed the X-ray spectra of these 68 objects using data from the {\it XMM-Newton}, {\it Chandra}, {\it NuSTAR}, and {\it Swift} satellites. Our results show that most GeV-loud RGs do not exhibit significant absorption, while $\sim$50\% of the GeV-quiet RGs exhibit significant absorption. This suggests that the jet of GeV-loud RGs is viewed from a small angle, and thus the emission is not easily blocked by the torus. Moreover, we reported that RGs with a heavy absorption are mostly in the X-ray luminosity range of $10^{43}-10^{45}$erg s$^{-1}$; however, few RGs with lower and higher luminosity suffer from heavy absorption. Abstract: The realtime follow-up of neutrino events is a promising approach to search for astrophysical neutrino sources. It has so far provided compelling evidence for a neutrino point source: the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 observed in coincidence with the high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A detected by IceCube. The detection of very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE, $\mathrm{E} > 100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) from this source helped establish the coincidence and constrained the modeling of the blazar emission at the time of the IceCube event. The four major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts sent by IceCube. This program has two main components. One are the observations of known gamma-ray sources around which a cluster of candidate neutrino events has been identified by IceCube (Gamma-ray Follow-Up, GFU). Second one is the follow-up of single high-energy neutrino candidate events of potential astrophysical origin such as IceCube-170922A. GFU has been recently upgraded by IceCube in collaboration with the IACT groups. Abstract: We have obtained simultaneous and continuous photo-polarization observations of the blazar BL Lacertae in optical and near-infrared (NIR) bands during a historical outburst from 2020 to 2021. In total, fourteen nights of observations were performed where ten observations show microvariability on timescales of a few minutes to several hours. This suggests a compact emission region, and the timescales are difficult to explain by a one-zone shock-in-jet model. Moreover, we found significant differences in the polarization degree (PD) and angle between optical and NIR bands. Nine nights showed a PD in the optical band that is greater than or equal to that in the NIR band, which can be explained by either a shock-in-jet model or the Turbulent Extreme Multi-Zone (TEMZ) model. On the other hand, five nights showed higher PD in a NIR band than an optical band, which cannot be explained by simple shock-in-jet models nor the simple TEMZ model. The observed timescales and wavelength dependency of the PD and polarization angle suggest the existence of complicated multiple emission regions such as an irregular TEMZ model., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

26. High energy emission component, population, and contribution to the extragalactic gamma-ray background of gamma-ray emitting radio galaxies

Abstract: In this study, we systematically studied the X-ray to GeV gamma-ray spectra of 61 {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT) detected radio galaxies. We found an anticorrelation between peak frequency and peak luminosity in the high-energy spectral component of radio galaxies, similar to blazars. With this sample, we also constructed a gamma-ray luminosity function (GLF) of gamma-ray-loud radio galaxies. We found that blazar-like GLF shapes can reproduce their redshift and luminosity distribution, but the log$N$-log$S$ relation prefers models with more low-$z$ radio galaxies. This indicates many low-$z$ gamma-ray-loud radio galaxies. By utilizing our latest GLF, the contribution of radio galaxies to the extragalactic gamma-ray background is found to be 1--10\%. We further investigated the nature of gamma-ray-loud radio galaxies. Compared to radio or X-ray flux-limited radio galaxy samples, the gamma-ray selected sample tends to lack high radio power galaxies like FR-II radio galaxies. We also found that only $\sim$10\% of radio galaxies are GeV gamma-ray loud. Radio galaxies may contribute to the cosmic MeV gamma-ray background comparable to blazars if gamma-ray-quiet radio galaxies have X-ray to gamma-ray spectra like Cen A, with a small gamma-ray to X-ray flux ratio., Comment: ApJ accepted, 45 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: The origin of Galactic Cosmic rays (GCRs), whose spectrum extends to PeV energies, is one of the longest-standing problems in astroparticle physics. One of the main sources of GCRs are regarded to be Supernova remnants (SNRs). While SNRs are known to accelerate protons, so far there is no evidence that SNRs can accelerate CRs to PeV energies. Providing that ~10% of the parent Cosmic ray energy is converted to gamma rays, the gamma-ray spectrum extending up to ~100 TeV would be a signature of a so-called Galactic PeVatron, an object responsible for the production of protons up to the knee of the Cosmic ray spectrum. The current multi-wavelength data indicate that HESS J1809-193 is one of the most promising Galactic PeVatron candidates. So far, no firm identification on the source nature has been established as there are several possible counterparts at lower energies; one of them being SNR G11.0−0.0. We report here the results of an observational campaign performed by the MAGIC telescopes on HESS J1809-193 since 2019 in the very-high-energy gamma-ray domain (E>100 GeV). The data were obtained with the Very Large Zenith Angle (VLZA) technique, which increased the collection area significantly to about one square kilometer. Abstract: X-ray and gamma-ray binaries are systems consisting of a compact object and normally a non-degenerate companion star. Most of these sources have been shown to emit radiation in a broad frequency range, from radio up to X-rays and sometimes gamma rays. We report on recent results in very high-energy gamma rays above 100 GeV obtained by the MAGIC Collaboration for the Galactic X-ray binaries MAXI J1820+070 and 1A 0535+262, and the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057. Multiwavelength data at lower energies are also provided for a better contextualisation of the sources.

Abstract: QSO B0218+357 is currently the only gravitationally lensed source from which very-high-energy (VHE, &100GeV) gamma-ray emission has been detected. We report the multiwavelength monitoring observations of this source performed between 2016 and 2020 in radio interferometry, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray bands. Abstract: Blazars, together with other active galactic nuclei, are the most luminous persistent sources in our universe; and therefore a prime candidate for very-high-energy (>0.2 TeV, VHE) gamma-ray observations. For the two MAGIC telescopes, the Mrk501 galaxy is among the brightest observed blazars due to its proximity. We report a multi-wavelength and multi-messenger study of Mrk501 with data from 2017 to 2020, when Mrk501 showed a VHE flux typically below 10% that of the Crab Nebula. During this time, we performed three long observations with NuSTAR, which characterized the hard X-ray emission during three different low-activity flux levels. This Mrk501 dataset provided the unprecedented opportunity to study multi-wavelength variability and correlations with sensitive instruments during historically low X-ray and VHE gamma-ray emission (below 5% of the Crab Nebula flux in the VHE range), which could be considered as the baseline emission of Mrk501. We complemented the broadband spectral energy distributions (SED) of the identified historically low X-ray and VHE gamma-ray flux with data published by IceCube, in order to evaluate the potential existence of a hadronic component that is stable (or slowly variable), and less visible than the leptonic component that may dominate the emission during typical and flaring activity. Abstract: The high-peaked BL Lac object 1ES 0647+250 is one of the few distant blazars detected at very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) γ rays during non-flaring activity. Its redshift is still uncertain, with a recently proposed lower limit of z>0.29. This blazar was first detected by the MAGIC telescopes between 2009 and 2011 during its low state, displaying a flux of around 2% of the Crab Nebula above 100 GeV, but it has shown several periods of high activity, where the VHE γ-ray flux increased by more than one order of magnitude. The VHE spectra of four observed periods are characterized and the redshift of this source is estimated using the HE and VHE spectral shapes. The multi-wavelength data set collected from 2009 to 2020 introduced in this work will serve as the seed for further studies, including detailed studies of the broad-band spectral energy distribution for different activity levels and multi-band variability and correlation studies., PoS: Proceedings of Science, 395, ISSN:1824-8039, 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

Abstract: We present the first search for dark matter (DM) spectral lines in the Galactic centre (GC) region with the MAGIC telescopes. The MAGIC telescopes, located on the Canary island of La Palma (Spain), are sensitive to gamma rays in the energy range from 50 GeV to 50 TeV. MAGIC has performed indirect DM searches in various astrophysical targets, such as dwarf spheroidal galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Observations at high zenith angles significantly increase the telescopes' collection area and sensitivity for gamma rays in the TeV regime. We present the results obtained with more than 200 hours of high-zenith angle observations of the GC region with MAGIC, which allow us to probe promising heavy SUSY models, and to obtain competitive limits to the DM annihilation cross-section at high DM particle mass, compared to existing constraints. Abstract: Hot atmospheres of massive galaxies are enriched with metals. Elemental abundances measured in the X-ray band have been used to study the chemical enrichment of supernova remnants, elliptical galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies. Here we measure the elemental abundances of the hot atmosphere of luminous infrared galaxy Arp 299 observed with XMM-Newton. To measure the abundances in the hot atmosphere, we use a multi-temperature thermal plasma model, which provides a better fit to the Reflection Grating Spectrometer data. The observed Fe/O abundance ratio is subsolar, while those of Ne/O and Mg/O are slightly above solar. Core-collapse supernovae (SNcc) are the dominant metal factory of elements like O, Ne, and Mg. We find some deviations between the observed abundance patterns and theoretical ones from a simple chemical enrichment model. One possible explanation is that massive stars with $M_{\star}\gtrsim23-27~M_{\odot}$ might not explode as SNcc and enrich the hot atmosphere. This is in accordance with the missing massive SNcc progenitors problem, where very massive progenitors $M_{\star}\gtrsim18~M_{\odot}$ of SNcc have not been clearly detected. Abstract: We report the detection of pulsed emission from the Geminga pulsar (PSR J0633+1746) with the MAGIC Telescopes. After the Crab and Vela pulsars, Geminga is the third one detected in the very high energy domain, and its estimated age of ~340 ky makes it the oldest one. The spectrum derived by MAGIC extends from ~15 GeV to 75 GeV and can be well modeled with a simple, soft power-law function. For energies below 40 GeV it overlaps with Fermi-LAT measurements. Joint fits to MAGIC and Fermi-LAT data disfavour the existence of a sub-exponential cut-off in this energy range. Our results are discussed in the framework of the outer gap accelerator model. Such power-law emission can be interpreted as the transition from curvature radiation to inverse Compton (IC) scattering of charges accelerated in the northern outer gap. The IC component is expected to continue towards higher energies. The model fails to fit the overall shape of the spectrum, indicating that a major review is required. The MAGIC Telescopes are two IACTs on the Canary Island of La Palma. In recent years they have significantly improved their performance below 100 GeV with the introduction of a novel trigger system, the Sum-Trigger-II, which halves the energy threshold of the system.

36. Fast X-ray variability of radio galaxy M87

Abstract: M87 is a radio galaxy and it was detected in the TeV gamma-ray band, but its emission and particle acceleration region are still under debate. We searched for fast X-ray variability of M87 by using X-ray archive data with a long exposure than 10 ksec. As a result, we found an intraday variability during Suzaku/XIS data in 2006. Suzaku/XIS cannot resolve each component in the jet, but HST-1 knot standing at $\sim$100 pc from the core was the brightest component in the X-ray band in this period. Therefore, this variability is likely attributed to HST-1. A soft photon index of 2.38 in the X-ray band indicates that variability component is synchrotron emission by accelerated electrons in HST-1. Assuming the decay time scale as correspond to synchrotron cooling time, we estimated a magnetic field strength to $B\sim1.94\delta^{1/3}$ mG, which is enough to accelerate particles up to TeV, where $\delta$ is a Doppler factor. In addition, we also found a possible variability of the core during the Chandra/HRC observation in 2017. In this period, a NuStar X-ray spectrum was represented by a power law with a photon index of 1.96. Therefore we could not distinguish this fast variability is due to synchrotron emission or disk/corona emission. From these results, both of the core and HST-1 are could be the origin of the X-ray variability, and we found that knot HST-1 is a candidate of the location of particle acceleration up to TeV.

Abstract: OT 081 is a luminous blazar well known for its variability in many energy bands. The very-high-energy (VHE; E >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the source was discovered by MAGIC and H.E.S.S. during flaring activity in July 2016, after a trigger from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi satellite. By analysing the multiwavelength light curves andthe broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), we study the activity of the source and investigate four individual states of activity in the window from MJD 57575 to 57602. The intrinsic gamma-ray spectrum can be described by a power law with spectral indices of 3.27 ± 0.44(MAGIC)and 3.39 ± 0.58(H.E.S.S.) over energy ranges 60–300 GeV and 120–500 GeV, respectively. The combined contemporaneous high-energy (HE;E >100 MeV) through VHE SED shows curvatureand can be described by a log-parabola shape. A simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC)model is not sufficient to describe the broadband SED. The presence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum of the source challenges the categorisation of OT 081 as a BL Lac and, together with the emission scenarios tested, points to the possibility that the source is transitional in nature between a BL Lac and a flat-spectrum radio quasar.

Abstract: Only 10% of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have a powerful radio jet, and these objects are roughly classified either radio galaxy or blazar. Blazars are bright but its radiation almost comes from the core jet because of strong beaming effect, while radio galaxies whose beaming effect is weak show various emission components from outer-layer jet, outer jet, and disk/corona. Therefore, radio galaxies are considered to be important objects to understand a relation between jet and disk. To study this relation is considered to be an important point to understand jet ejection mechanism X-ray emission from radio galaxies contain both jet and disk/corona radiation. Thus, we have to investigate contributions from jet and disk/corona to the X-ray band. In this work, we investigate X-ray and Gamma-ray properties of GeV emitting radio galaxies listed in the 4FGL-DR2 catalog. We use X-ray data of Swift/XRT. We studied time variability, the relation between X-ray and gamma-ray photon index, together with accre-tion rate, and found they are classified into 3 groups; X-ray emission in the first group is dominated by jet emission, X-ray of the second group is dominated by disk/corona emis-sion, and for the third group both jet and disk/corona contribute to the X-ray band.

Abstract: The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart AT2017gfo and the GRB 170817A, associated to the binary neutron star merger GW170817, was one of the major advances in the study of gamma- ray bursts (GRBs) and the hallmark of the multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. Another breakthrough in GRB physics is represented by the discovery of the highly energetic, teraelectronvolt (TeV) component in the GRB 190114C, possibly an universal component in all GRBs. This conclusion is also suggested by the hint of TeV emission in the short GRB 160821B and a few more events reported in the literature. The missing observational piece is the joint detection of TeV emission and gravitational waves from a short GRB and its progenitor. MAGIC observed the counterpart AT2017gfo as soon as the visibility conditions allowed it, namely from January to June 2018. These observations correspond to the maximum flux level observed in the radio and X-ray bands. The upper limits derived from TeV observations are compared with the modelling of the late non-thermal emission using the multi-frequency SED.

Abstract: On 14th January 2019, the MAGIC collaboration achieved the first significant detection at TeV energies of a gamma-ray burst (GRB), namely GRB 190114C. This observation sets the first experimental proof of very high energy (VHE, >~100 GeV) gamma-ray emission in GRBs, after more than 50 years from the first GRB detection and many searches with Cherenkov telescopes in the last decades. The data collected by MAGIC and by more than 20 other ground-based and space-borne instruments, spanning 17 orders of magnitude in energy, revealed a new GeV-TeV emission component in the GRB afterglow. This unprecedented multi-wavelength dataset, including VHE data for the first time, allowed a detailed study of the broadband emission. A one-zone synchrotron-self Compton scenario with internal $\gamma$-$\gamma$ absorption could be used to describe the broadband emission, using parameters compatible with those found in previous studies of GRB afterglows below the GeV energy range. This detection opened a new era in the studies of GRBs, leading to new questions such as the universality of TeV emission in different types of GRBs. In this contribution, we will present the GRB follow-up program performed by the MAGIC collaboration, which started more than 15 years ago. We will highlight the results on GRB 190114C, discuss the implications for GRB physics, and report the latest developments and the prospects for future observations of GRBs with the MAGIC telescopes.

Abstract: The Large-Sized Telescope (LST) prototype of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. It is designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, observing gamma rays down to energies of tens of GeV. The LST prototype started performing astronomical observations in November 2019 during the commissioning of the telescope and it has been taking data since then. In this contribution, we will present the tuning of the characteristics of the telescope in the Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to describe the data obtained, the estimation of its angular and energy resolution, and an evaluation of its sensitivity, both with simulations and with observations of the Crab Nebula.

Abstract: Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are among the best candidates to perform indirect searches for DM, having the highest known mass-to-light ratio and being free of astrophysical gamma-ray emitting sources. The Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes, located on the Canary Island of La Palma, have observed a fair amount of optimal dSphs in the recent years. This is the outcome of diversifying the observation strategy in order to avoid possible biases in target selection and to improve previous results. In this contribution we will report on new MAGIC results obtained from 52.1 hours of observation of the Draco dSph in 2018 and 49.5 hours of the Coma Berenices dSph in 2019. We will also present the results of a joint analysis of Draco and Coma Berenices dSphs with other dSphs observed by MAGIC so far. The selected dataset accounts for 354.4 hours of good quality data, resulting in one of the largest dSphs samples ever collected by an array of Cherenkov telescopes. This allows us to derive the most constraining limits from dSphs, among Cherenkov telescopes, on the WIMP annihilation cross section for different annihilation channels in the WIMP mass range 70 GeV to 100 TeV.

Abstract: The flat-spectrum radio quasar QSO B1420+326 underwent an enhanced $\gamma$-ray flux state seen by Fermi-LAT at the turn of 2019/2020. Compared to the low state both the position and luminosity of the two spectral energy distribution peaks changed by at least two orders of magnitude. The high state resulted in the discovery of the very-high-energy (>100 GeV) $\gamma$-ray emission from the source by the MAGIC telescopes. The organized multiwavelength campaign allow us to trace the broadband emission of the source through different phases of the flaring activity. The source was observed by 20 instruments in radio, near-infrared, optical, ultra-violet, X-ray and $\gamma$-ray bands. We use dedicated optical spectroscopy results to estimate the accretion disc and the dust torus luminosity. The optical spectroscopy shows a prominent FeII bump with flux evolving together with the continuum emission and a MgII line with varying equivalent width. The $\gamma$-ray flare was accompanied by a rotation of the optical polarization vector and emission of a new superluminal radio knot. We model spectral energy distributions in different flare phases in the framework of combined synchrotron-self-Compton and external Compton scenario in which the shape of the electron energy distribution is determined from cooling processes.

Abstract: XRISM is an X-ray astronomical mission by the JAXA, NASA, ESA and other international participants, that is planned for launch in 2022 (Japanese fiscal year), to quickly restore high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of astrophysical objects. To enhance the scientific outputs of the mission, the Science Operations Team (SOT) is structured independently from the instrument teams and the Mission Operations Team. The responsibilities of the SOT are divided into four categories: 1) guest observer program and data distributions, 2) distribution of analysis software and the calibration database, 3) guest observer support activities, and 4) performance verification and optimization activities. As the first step, lessons on the science operations learned from past Japanese X-ray missions are reviewed, and 15 kinds of lessons are identified. Among them, a) the importance of early preparation of the operations from the ground stage, b) construction of an independent team for science operations separate from the instrument development, and c) operations with well-defined duties by appointed members are recognized as key lessons. Then, the team structure and the task division between the mission and science operations are defined; the tasks are shared among Japan, US, and Europe and are performed by three centers, the SOC, SDC, and ESAC, respectively. The SOC is designed to perform tasks close to the spacecraft operations, such as spacecraft planning, quick-look health checks, pre-pipeline processing, etc., and the SDC covers tasks regarding data calibration processing, maintenance of analysis tools, etc. The data-archive and user-support activities are covered both by the SOC and SDC. Abstract: The Large Area Telescope (LAT), the primary instrument for the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) mission, is an imaging, wide field-of-view, high-energy gamma-ray telescope, covering the energy range from 30 MeV to more than 300 GeV. We describe the performance of the instrument at the 10-year milestone. LAT performance remains well within the specifications defined during the planning phase, validating the design choices and supporting the compelling case to extend the duration of the Fermi mission. 47. Performance study of a large CsI(Tl) scintillator with an MPPC readout for nanosatellites used to localize gamma-ray bursts

Abstract: We are designing a fleet of nanosatellites to perform accurate position determinations of short-duration gamma-ray bursts by measuring arrival time differences. To achieve sufficient photon statistics to measure the arrival times precisely under the severe limitations of size, mass and power consumption, we propose the use of large-area CsI(Tl) scintillators which provide a high light output and the use of a small-sized multipixel photon counters (MPPC), a kind of SiPM, that have low power consumption. We plan to use one of the latest-model MPPCs provided by Hamamatsu Photonics, namely, S13360-6050CS, which has an active area of 6 x 6 mm(2). We have compared the performance of two scintillators of different sizes (150x75x5 mm(3) and 100x75x5 mm(3)); the bigger one is the maximum size that can be mounted on a three-unit satellite, according to CubeSat standards. We have found that the light yield of the bigger scintillator is lower than that of the smaller one, but the difference is only approximately 13%, and each has an energy threshold of similar to 10 keV at 25 degrees C. We have tested one-and two-MPPC readout and confirmed the same energy thresholds. The light yield for the two-MPPC readout is 1.4 times as high as that for the one-MPPC readout. We have also examined the position dependence of the light yield by using radiation from a Am-241 (59.5 keV) source, and confirmed that uniformity was improved, and energy resolution got better by similar to 7% for two-MPPC readout.

Abstract: In recent years the number of CubeSats (U-class spacecrafts) launched into space has increased exponentially marking the dawn of the nanosatellite technology. In general these satellites have a much smaller mass budget compared to conventional scientific satellites which limits shielding of scientific instruments against direct and indirect radiation in space. In this paper we present a simulation framework to quantify the signal in large field-of-view gamma-ray scintillation detectors of satellites induced by X-ray/gamma-ray transients, by taking into account the response of the detector. Furthermore, we quantify the signal induced by X-ray and particle background sources at a Low-Earth Orbit outside South Atlantic Anomaly and polar regions. Finally, we calculate the signal-to-noise ratio taking into account different energy threshold levels. Our simulation can be used to optimize material composition and predict detectability of various astrophysical sources by CubeSats. We apply the developed simulation to a satellite belonging to a planned CAMELOT CubeSat constellation. This project mainly aims to detect short and long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and as a secondary science objective, to detect soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). The simulation includes a detailed computer-aided design (CAD) model of the satellite to take into account the interaction of particles with the material of the satellite as accurately as possible. Results of our simulations predict that CubeSats can complement the large space observatories in high-energy astrophysics for observations of GRBs, SGRs and TGFs. For the detectors planned to be on board of the CAMELOT CubeSats the simulations show that detections with signal-to-noise ratio of at least 9 for median GRB and SGR fluxes are achievable., 86 pages, 30 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems

Abstract: The detections of gravitational waves (GW) by the LIGO/Virgo collaborations provide various possibilities for both physics and astronomy. We are quite sure that GW observations will develop a lot, both in precision and in number, thanks to the continuous work on the improvement of detectors, including the expected new detector, KAGRA, and the planned detector, LIGO-India. On this occasion, we review the fundamental outcomes and prospects of gravitational wave physics and astronomy. We survey the development, focusing on representative sources of gravitational waves: binary black holes, binary neutron stars, and supernovae. We also summarize the role of gravitational wave observations as a probe of new physics.

Abstract: This paper introduces a second-generation balloon-borne hard X-ray polarimetry mission, XL-Calibur. X-ray polarimetry promises to give qualitatively new information about high-energy astrophysical sources, such as pulsars and binary black hole systems. The XL-Calibur contains a grazing incidence X-ray telescope with a focal plane detector unit that is sensitive to linear polarization. The telescope is very similar in design to the ASTRO-H HXT telescopes that has the world’s largest effective area above ~10 keV. The detector unit combines a low atomic number Compton scatterer with a CdZnTe detector assembly to measure the polarization making use of the fact that polarized photons Compton scatter preferentially perpendicular to the electric field orientation. It also contains a CdZnTe imager at the bottom. The detector assembly is surrounded by the improved anti-coincidence shielding, giving a better sensitivity. The pointing system with arcsecond accuracy will be achieved.
