The hemagglutination (HA) activity of Escherichia coli was enhanced by subminimal inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of ampicillin. One half of the MIC of ampicillin caused a bacterial filamentation and diminished bacterial piliation (as observed by light and electron microscopies) as well as an increase of HA activity. HA activity, however, decreased after separation of ampicillin-treated bacteria. These results indicate that the increase in HA activity by ampicillin is mainly due to filament formation.

The age-related alteration of androgen dependency in ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity was examined in ventral prostate from: (1) intact rats aged 6, 10, 50 and 100W; (2) castrated rats aged 10 and 100W; (3) 10 and 100W rats castrated for 7 days before injection with testosterone propionate for up to 7 days. Tissue dihydrotestosterone (DHT) contents in ventral prostate from intact rats aged 10 and 100W were also measured. ODC activity of rat ventral prostate declined with aging. Castration resulted in rapid decline in ODC activity of young mature rats (l0W) and the activity was restored to normal value by the injection of testosterone propionate. On the other hand, the changes in ODC activity of old rats (100W) induced by castration and androgen replacement were significantly slower than those of young mature rats. In young mature rats, ODC activity was apparently correlated with prostatic DHT contents. Although prostatic DHT contents of old rats retained a similar level to young mature rats, no such correlation between ODC activity and tissue DHT content was observed. These results showed androgen-sensitive nature of ODC activity. And the sensitivity might be affected by aging at a step by which androgen showed its action.

1976～1981年までに広島大学医学部附属病院泌尿器科不妊外来を受診した794例について集計した.1)不妊外来患者は男子外来患者に対して9.9%であり, 年齢分布では25～34歳が全体の76%を占めていた.不妊期間は結婚後2～5年が多く, これらで全体の約57%を占めていた.2)精液検査では無精子症が32.4%, 乏精子症(50×106 /ml以下)が47.7%で, この両者が全体の約80%であった.3)睾丸生検ではhypospermatogenesisが45.4%, Sertoli cell onlyが28.8%で, この両者で全体の84.2%であった.4)睾丸容積の減少にともなって血中gonadotropin (LH, FSH)は上昇したが, testosteroneは変化なかった.睾丸容積が12 ml以下ではほとんどの症例が無精子症であり, 睾丸容積の減少は高度の精細管機能障害が疑われた, A statistical analysis was performed on infertile male patients who visited our urological clinic between Jan. 1976 and Dec. 1981. The incidence of infertile male was 9.9% of the total male out-patients. Age distribution of most of the patients ranged from 25 to 34 years old. Infertile period was most commonly within 5 years after they had married. In semen analysis, the cases of azoospermia and oligozoospermia (less than 50 x 10(6)/ml) accounted for 80% of all the infertile males. Testicular histology showed hypospermatogenesis or "Sertoli cell only" in most patients (more than 84.2%) who received testicular biopsy. Decrease in testicular volume was accompanied by an increase in the serum levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone, but there was no relationship between testicular volume and testosterone. Most of the patients with a testicular volume of less than 12 ml were azoospermic. This suggests that there may be a suppression of spermatogenesis in small testes.

The direct effects of 17β-estradiol (E2) on testicular function were investigated using in situ perfusion of canine testis. During perfusion of E2 (10^-8-10^-4M), we measured the concentrations of cAMP, testosterone (T), androstenedione and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the spermatic venous effluent after hCG (500 IU) injection into the spermatic artery. The cAMP concentration in the spermatic venous effluent was 122 ± 3. 7 (SE) pmoles/ml, increasing after hCG to a peak level of 259.1 ± 33.0 (SE) pmoles/ml at 45 min and decreasing thereafter. T increased gradually from the pretreated level of 12.2 ± 4.4 (SE) mg/ml to 90.9 ± 30.9 (SE) ng/ml at 90 min after hCG injection. Androstenedione production was also stimulated by hCG. Although the pattern of changes of DHT in the venous effluent was similar to that of T, a statistical significant increase was not observed after hCG injection. Continuous infusion with E2 at the concentrations of 10^-8-^-4 M decreased hCG-induced cAMP increase in a dose-dependent fashion. The peak level of cAMP after hCG was shown to be increasingly depleted (50 and 80%) by the increasing doses of 10^-6 and 10^-4 M of exogenous E2. The responses of T and androstenedione were also suppressed by E2 and at 10^-4 M of E2 no increase was observed, although the response of cAMP to hCG remained. These findings indicate that E2 can directly suppress the hCG-stimulated steroidogenesis and cAMP production in in situ canine testis.

1)いわゆる特発性男子不妊症に対して, hCG, hMGの併用療法を施行し, 性ホルモン, 睾丸容積と精子数におよぼす影響について検討した.2)投与方法および投与量については対象を無作為に2群に分類, Group 1に対してはhCG 1, 000国際単位とhMG 75国際単位を週1回筋肉内投与した.Group 2に対してはhCG 1, 000国際単位とhMG 150国際単位を週1回筋肉内投与した.3)両群間には, 年齢, 加療前の睾丸容積, 血清LH, FSH, testosterone, prolactinについて有意差を認めていない.4)治療開始12週後, 精子数濃度が治療前値に比べ1, 000万/ml以上の改善が得られたものはGroup 1で26%, Group 2で24%であり, 治療期間中に妊娠成立が得られたものはGroup 1の4例(15%)であった.5)血清LH, testosterone, prolactin基礎値には治療期間中有意な変動はみられなかった.6)睾丸容積は治療前後で有意な変化は認められなかった, Changes in sex hormone levels, testicular volume and sperm count during hCG/hMG therapy were studied in 44 cases of idiopathic male infertility. These patients were divided into two groups and treated for 12 weeks. In group I, which consisted of 5 cases of azoospermia, 10 cases of severe oligozoospermia (less than 10 X 10(6)/ml) and 12 cases of mild oligozoospermia (10-50 X 10(6)/ml), 1, 000 IU of hCG and 75 IU of hMG were both administered once a week. In group II, which consisted of 3 cases of azoospermia, 7 cases of severe oligozoospermia and 7 cases of mild oligozoospermia, 1, 000 IU of hCG and 150 IU of hMG were both administered once a week. After 12 weeks, increase in sperm count was observed in 7 cases (26%) in group I and 4 cases (24%) in group II. Pregnancy was ensued in 4 cases in group I. There was no significant changes in testicular volume or sex hormone levels during hCG/hMG therapy.

1) STDと考えられる男子尿道炎患者48例について調査した結果, 淋菌性2例で原因菌不明は23例であった.クラミジア陽性例は9例(19%), ウレアプラズマ陽性例は6例(12%)であった.2)クラミジア陽性例でウレアプラズマが同時に分離された尿道炎は1例もなかった.3)クラミジアまたはウレアプラズマ陽性NGUで尿道分泌物は漿液性のものが多く, 膿尿などは軽度であった.4)クラミジアまたはウレアプラズマ陽性のNGUに対してMINOを投与した結果, クラミジア性NGUで78%, ウレアプラズマ性NGUで67%の総合臨床効果を得た, Thirty-nine male patients with urethritis were studied for gonorrhoea or non-gonorrhoea infections. Only 2 patients were infected with N. gonorrhoeae, the other 37 patients were non-gonorrhoea urethritis (NGU). In 9 of these patients, C. trachomatis was identified and in 6 patients, U. urealyticum was isolated. No chlamydial urethritis was combined with ureaplasma. There was no clinical difference between chlamydia and ureaplasma infection, such as serous urethral discharge or mild pyuria. Minocycline was given orally at the dose of 200 mg daily for 7 to 42 days to these patients. Seven of the 9 patients (78%) with C. trachomatis and 7 of the 6 patients (67%) with U. urealyticum infection showed improvement of subjective and objective symptoms after minocycline. In no case, was an adverse reaction noted. Minocycline was effective in the treatment of both C. trachomatis and U. urealyticum urethral infection.

Forty-three patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated with weekly i.m. injections of 400 mg oxendolone for 12 weeks. The subjective symptoms were improved in 83% of these patients. Residual urine was decreased significantly and Qmax was increased by this treatment. Serum VLDL level was suppressed significantly, whereas the levels of LDL, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were changed little. Atherosclerotic index and the ratio of (total cholesterol--HDL-cholesterol) to (HDL-cholesterol), was not influenced by the treatment. No severe side-effect was found. These findings suggest that oxendolone is the drug of choice for non-surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The effects of diethylstilbestrol diphosphate (DESDP) on testicular steroidogenesis were investigated in patients undergoing orchiectomy for prostatic carcinoma. In non-DESDP treated patients the concentration of cAMP in the spermatic venous blood was 17.8 ± 3.1 (SE) pmoles/ml, which increased to 343.3 ± 18.6 (SE) pmoles/ml 30 min after hCG (1,000 IU) injection into the testis. T increased gradually from the pretreated level of 26.5 ± 7.2 (SE) μg/dl at 50 min. A slight increase in DHT was observed after hCG injection. Ten days' injections of DESDP significantly reduced the responses of T and DHT to hCG and 20 days' injections decreased T and DHT responses as well as cAMP response to hCG. These findings indicate that DESDP can directly suppress the hCG stimulated steroidogenesis and cAMP production in human testis in vivo. The inhibitory effects of DESDP on Leydig cell function are probably on T biosynthesis as well as on cAMP formation.
