The small strain shear modulus is an important parameter in the assessment of soil dynamics problems. Studies on the small strain shear stiffness of volcanic ash remain rare probably because globally they cover just under 1% of the land surface. However, on a regional scale, this figure may be consequential as in the case of Japan, where about one third of its total land surface is covered by andosols. In this research, we aimed at understanding the influence of confinement time, a non-negligible parameter, contingent on the soil type, which needs to be accounted for when assessing the shear modulus. Bender element tests were conducted on allophanic volcanic ash, kuroboku soil sampled from the southern island of Kyushu in Japan. The allophanic ashes present all the characteristics of a non-textbook soil, notably high natural water content, high liquid and plastic limits and high void ratios. From the micrographic images, it was observed that the soil structure consisted of different types of porous particles (allophane, imogolite, volcanic glass and so on) at different internal spatial scales. Strong electrostatic bonding between the allophane particles means that in normal conditions the soil material exist as aggregates. The consequence is that the end of the consolidation stage is reached within a few minutes. Thus, the threshold demarcating the onset of the creep stage is different compared to sedimentary materials or other clayey soils. Based on the test results, empirical equations for predicting the time-dependent behaviour of the shear modulus were proposed.

Global warming has caused many lands to degrade, making them vulnerable to desertification. Therefore, finding innovative solutions is essential to prevent such phenomena from exacerbating. However, this requires a comprehensive understanding of the unsaturated layer formed due to the high-water loss from soil profiles by evaporation. In the present study, a new technique to trace the unsaturated layer from drying soil profiles was developed, and its accuracy and reliability were confirmed. Consequently, the spatial and temporal development of the drying front, vaporization plane, and film region were investigated for two soil profiles of different pore structures. It was found that soil profiles with broader pore distribution lose water from deeper drying fronts during Stage 1, while diffusion during Stage 2 occurs from shallower depths. Moreover, the film region’s thickness increased at early drying stages, followed by a slight drop associated with the onset of Stage 2. During Stage 2, the thickness slightly fluctuated until reaching the same thickness at the end of Stage 1, where a second significant drop in the thickness was observed.

The settlement behavior is a common problem on the railway structure that can be optimized by applying cement-treated soil as ground restoration. However, the application of a high cement mixing content needs a proper estimation that can be achieved by adjusting the element testing. The strain measurement devices can estimate the deformation characteristics, such as secant modulus, Poisson ratio, and shear modulus that can describe the settlement behavior and stiffness of cement-treated soil. This research is focused on a static analysis of triaxial consolidated undrained (CU¯)$(\overline {CU} )$(CU¯) testing that is improved by the axial and radial local displacement transducer (LDT) and bender element to increase the accuracy of measurement results. Furthermore, the secant modulus and shear modulus is more accurate when the combination of radial and axial LDT is used due to a small strain range. Lastly, the shear modulus measurement is improved by using a filler in the cement-treated soil for the bender element test. To conclude, this system of testing for the static condition can be utilized for the dynamic condition, because the measurement shows a reliable result for a small strain range which is the parameter of the dynamics condition.

The effect of soil disturbance on the shear strength of black volcanic ash soil was investigated using a constant volume direct shear apparatus. Disturbance of soil structure was considered as the pore size distribution which obtained from the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). The disturbed sample was used as a representation of soil structure disturbance due to earthquake shakes. A series of cyclic tests were conducted under unsaturated and saturated samples. It was found that the undisturbed samples exhibit a unimodal pore structure, and the disturbed samples indicate to a bimodal pore structure. Since the pore structure of the disturbed sample is unstable, the degradation index value is higher than that of the undisturbed sample and increases with the increasing number of cycles. In other words, the cyclic normalized vertical stress of disturbed samples degrades faster. Furthermore, the degradation index value in the normallyconsolidated samples was found to be larger than the overconsolidated. It might be attributed to increasing of the pore water pressure during shearing. Where in the over-consolidated samples is lower than normally-consolidated. On the other hand, the normalized shear stress of unsaturated samples, it is slightly larger due to the suction forces in the total strength of soils.

Through this paper, a sampling methodology and a novel full automatic system adopting the continuous pressurization method which is capable of determining the Soil Water Characteristics Curve (SWCC) for both remoulded and undisturbed samples in a very short time were developed. The proposed system was validated by comparing the SWCCs of standard testing soils obtained using the developed system to the SWCCs obtained using a conventional method. Remoulded and undisturbed natural soil samples were tested, where the degree of disturbance influence on the obtained SWCC was discussed. In addition, the undisturbed samples containing moulds material influence on the obtained SWCC was investigated. It was found that remoulded samples do not properly represent the in-situ conditions with significant error that should be carefully considered when conducting analysis and proposing countermeasures against unsaturated soils related Geo-disasters. In addition, the material which the containing mould is made from has minor influence on the obtained SWCC which can be neglected. Finally, it can be concluded that the developed undisturbed soil water characteristics curve obtaining system is direct, rapid, reliable and simple. In addition, the proposed undisturbed sampling and testing methodology can be used to accurately evaluate the spatial variations of the SWCC regardless the heterogeneity of the soil profile.

The mechanical behaviour of unsaturated undisturbed black volcanic ash soils was investigated using a constant volume direct shear apparatus. A series of static and cyclic tests were conducted under unsaturated and saturated samples. The cyclic test under two patterns were adopted. First type of pattern, cyclic one-sided shearing was applied. For the second type, two-sided shearing was conducted. For further understanding of the chemical content and microstructure, X-Ray Fluorescence analysis (XRF) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were evaluated. It was found that, under static shearing, the unsaturated sample exhibits a higher apparent cohesion and friction angle in comparison to the saturated sample. The normalized vertical stress under one-sided cyclic shearing in both overconsolidated and normally consolidated samples rapidly reduced at the beginning of shearing. This might be attributed to increase of the pore water pressure during shearing. Furthermore, there is a significant difference between the normalized shear stress under cyclic one-sided and two-sided shearing. For the two-sided cyclic shearing test, the normalized shear stress value is higher than the one-sided cyclic shearing test. In addition, the normalized shear stress under unsaturated condition is significantly larger. This can be related to the suction forces to the total strength of soils. The main chemical content of the black volcanic ash soil is allophane. Further, the microstructure of the black volcanic ash changes due to shearing. For the overconsolidated sample, particles of soil more severe damage than normally consolidated sample.

The 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes struck Kumamoto and Ōita regions and caused several devastating liquefaction induced damages. The primary damage was due to the extreme ground shaking of the foreshock and main shock sequence. Therefore, it is essential to develop a quick reliable approach with a high accuracy to assess the ground situation after foreshock or several shocks. Velocity of small shear wave (Vs) was widely used for evaluating the potential liquefaction. This study investigates the possibility of using Vs as a new indicator of the stress state in the soil after earthquake and evaluation of post liquefaction resistance of soil. Cyclic tri-axial apparatus equipped with bender elements were used to conduct two consecutives liquefaction tests on sandy soil. The Vs measured by bender elements was discussed on the relationship with effective stress during the liquefying processes. The results showed that for the sandy soils, a) Vs could not clearly reflect the significant reduction in resistance at re-liquefaction stages by directly comparing the Vs at the end of consolidation between first and stages, b) The shear wave velocity is significantly affected by effective confining pressure c) the shear wave velocity of 190 m/s was at confining pressure of 100 kPa. The shear wave velocity reaches to after 100 m/s after consolidations and re-consolidations. The shear wave velocity was found to reduce to 100 m/s when the effective confining stress reaches to 0 and to around 25 m/s when the double amplitude reaches to 5%; d) the velocity and effective stress decreases with a similar rate in liquefying process.
