Background The present study aimed to compare the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of quick penetrating solution (QPS) heparin, QPS diclofenac, and heparin gel in the prevention of superficial thrombophlebitis (ST). Materials and Methods This randomized controlled trial was conducted after approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee and registration to Clinical Trial Registry of India. Patients of 18–60 years age, American Society of Anesthesiologists I/II, and who needed venous cannulation for at least 72 h were included in the study. Patients were randomly divided into three groups receiving study drugs (heparin gel, QPS heparin, and QPS diclofenac) every 8 hourly for a period of 72 h. Venous cannulation site was graded using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis Scale. Patients developing no ST, mean time to reach ST Grade 1 and 2, prevention of ST probability, and cost-effectiveness of interventions during the study period were assessed. Results Out of 219 included patients, development of no ST in the study groups at 72 h of treatment were heparin gel (11%), QPS heparin (9.6%), and QPS diclofenac (2.7%). The mean time (hours) to develop any grade ST in the study arms was heparin gel (36.2 [11.9]), QPS heparin (40.0 [13.4]), and QPS diclofenac (37.0 [13.2]). The Kaplan–Meier analysis did not reveal significant differences for the prevention of any grade ST or severe ST in three treatment arms. The average cost-effectiveness ratio for preventing thrombophlebitis was 14.2 in heparin gel-, 13.2 in QPS heparin-, and 95.6 in QPS diclofenac-treated patients. Conclusion Based on efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness, heparin gel or QPS heparin can be used to prevent ST due to intravenous cannulation in surgical patients. QPS diclofenac is not a cost-effective option to prevent ST.

Abstract Carboxy-terminus of Hsc70-interacting protein (CHIP), an E3 ligase, modulates the stability of its targeted proteins to alleviate various pathological perturbations in various organ systems. Cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent, but it is also known for its alarming renal toxicity. The role of CHIP in the pathogenesis of cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) has not been adequately investigated. Herein, we demonstrated that CHIP was abundantly expressed in the renal proximal tubular epithelia, and its expression was downregulated in cisplatin-induced AKI. Further investigation revealed that CHIP overexpression or activation alleviated, while its gene disruption promoted, oxidative stress and apoptosis in renal proximal tubular epithelia induced by cisplatin. In terms of mechanism, CHIP interacted with and ubiquitinated NUR77 to promote its degradation, which consequently shielded BCL2 to maintain mitochondrial permeability of renal proximal tubular cells in the presence of cisplatin. Also, we demonstrated that CHIP interacted with NUR77 via its central coiled-coil (CC) domain, a non-canonical interactive pattern. In conclusion, these findings indicated that CHIP ubiquitinated and degraded its substrate NUR77 to attenuate intrinsic apoptosis in cisplatin-treated renal proximal tubular epithelia, thus providing a novel insight for the pathogenesis of cisplatin-induced AKI.

Single individuals of the Greater Spotted Eagle (Clanga clanga), Indian Spotted Eagle (Clanga hastata), Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax), Western Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), and two Pallid Harriers (Circus macrourus) were deployed with satellite transmitters in 2021 to study their home ranges, habitat associations, movement, and migration patterns. Data were collected for a combined number of 2291 days, providing 84,544 locations. Home ranges were calculated as kernel utilization distributions and expressed as 95% KDE and core areas as 50% KDE. Overall, eagles had larger home ranges (mean ± SD) of 942.70 ± 937.83 km2 compared to harriers, 43.84 ± 35.55 km2. Among eagles, the Greater Spotted Eagle had the largest home-range size of 2147.03 km2 calculated in Kazakhstan, while the female Pallid Harrier had the smallest home range of 5.74 km2 in Russia. Daily and monthly distances varied among eagles and harriers. The female Pallid Harrier covered the longest average monthly distance of 8585.43 ± 11,943.39 km, while the shortest monthly distance of 1338.22 ± 716.38 km was traveled by the Indian Spotted Eagle. All tagged birds migrated toward higher latitudes in the Northern hemisphere, except the Indian Spotted Eagle, which migrated to Pakistan. The male Western Marsh Harrier covered the longest migration distance in a shorter span of time, while the female Pallid Harrier took the longest to cover its migration distance. Overall, the daily distance covered during migration varied from 115.09 km traveled by the Indian Spotted Eagle to an overwhelming distance of 2035.85 km covered by the male Western Marsh Harrier. Scrubs, water bodies, croplands, and settlements were important habitat features associated with eagles, while croplands, open scrub, and built-up areas were associated with the female Pallid Harrier. The male Western Marsh Harrier was found to be primarily associated with saltpans and salt-affected areas having emergent vegetation. This study presents new insights into the movement and spatial ecology of long-distance migrant raptors that winter in Western India. We provide preliminary support for the use of the Western Circum–Himalayan Corridor as one of the important corridors of the Central Asian Flyway that warrants much appreciation among the current set of flyway corridors.

The cultural, morphological, and molecular variations among 22 isolates of Stemphylium vesicarium (Wallr.) E. Simmons, collected from different locations, was carried out. Significant variations were observed among the Stemphylium isolates regarding colony diameter, mean radial growth rate and sporulation on PDA media. The colonies of S. vesicarium isolates exhibited diverse mycelial growth characteristics, including velvety, cottony, or fluffy textures and a range of colours from whitish to dark grey, olivaceous with a greenish tinge or brownish. The margins of the colonies were observed to be filiform, displaying a filamentous appearance, with entire and undulate shapes and a whitish colouration. The conidiophores of Stemphylium isolates displayed a wide range of dimensions, with average length ranging from 36.81 μm to 66.44 μm and average breadth from 3.05 μm to 6.96 μm. Similarly, the conidia exhibited variations in size, colour, shape, average length (23.31 μm–43.18 μm) and average breadth (12.84 μm–23.13 μm). The conidia were mainly light brown or brown and displayed ovoid, oblong, or ovoid-to-oblong shapes. The number and presence of transverse and longitudinal septa also varied among the isolates. Fifteen RAPD primers generated 192 banding patterns. SV4, OPL5, and SV5 were identified as the most polymorphic primers, while OPA3, OPF10, OPN7, OPS7, and OPS10 produced the fewest polymorphic bands. The average polymorphic information content (PIC) value was 0.37, with OPA5 and OPC8 showing the highest PIC values. Cluster analysis based on genetic similarity revealed five distinct clusters, but no clear correlation between isolates and their collection sites was observed. In the phylogenetic analysis, based on Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and Glycerol-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase 1(gpd1) gene sequences, 20 isolates obtained from diseased onion leaves formed a distinct cluster and exhibited sequence similarity with ex-type sequence of Stemphylium vesicarium. Additionally, two isolates from diseased garlic samples showed similarity with ex-type sequence of Stemphylium eturmiunum. This is the first-time report of S. eturmiunum on Indian garlic under field conditions.

Abstract Highly sensitive stimuli‐responsive luminescent materials are crucial for applications in optical sensing, security, and anticounterfeiting. Here, we report two zero‐dimensional (0D) copper(I) halides, (TEP)2Cu2Br4, (TEP)2Cu4Br6, and 1D (TEP)3Ag6Br9, which are comprised of isolated [Cu2Br4]2−, [Cu4Br6]2−, and [Ag6Br9]3− polyanions, respectively, separated by TEP+ (tetraethylphosphonium [TEP]) cations. (TEP)2Cu2Br4 and (TEP)2Cu4Br6 demonstrate greenish‐white and orange‐red emissions, respectively, with near unity photoluminescence quantum yields, while (TEP)3Ag6Br9 is a poor light emitter. Optical spectroscopy measurements and density‐functional theory calculations reveal that photoemissions of these compounds originate from self‐trapped excitons due to the excited‐state distortions in the copper(I) halide units. Crystals of Cu(I) halides are radioluminescence active at room temperature under both X‐ and γ‐rays exposure. The light yields up to 15,800 ph/MeV under 662 keV γ‐rays of 137Cs suggesting their potential for scintillation applications. Remarkably, (TEP)2Cu2Br4 and (TEP)2Cu4Br6 are interconvertible through chemical stimuli or reverse crystallization. In addition, both compounds demonstrate luminescence on‐off switching upon thermal stimuli. The sensitivity of (TEP)2Cu2Br4 and (TEP)2Cu4Br6 to the chemical and thermal stimuli coupled with their ultrabright emission allows their consideration for applications such as solid‐state lighting, sensing, information storage, and anticounterfeiting.

Objectives: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) continues to pose a significant disease burden on global public health as a respiratory pathogen. The antimicrobial resistance among M. pneumoniae strains has complicated the outbreak control efforts, emphasizing the need for robust surveillance systems and effective antimicrobial stewardship programs. Design: This review comprehensively investigates studies stemming from previous outbreaks to emphasize the multifaceted nature of M. pneumoniae infections, encompassing epidemiological dynamics, diagnostic innovations, antibiotic resistance, and therapeutic challenges. Results: We explored the spectrum of clinical manifestations associated with M. pneumoniae infections, emphasizing the continuum of disease severity and the challenges in gradating it accurately. Artificial intelligence and machine learning have emerged as promising tools in M. pneumoniae diagnostics, offering enhanced accuracy and efficiency in identifying infections. However, their integration into clinical practice presents hurdles that need to be addressed. Further, we elucidate the pivotal role of pharmacological interventions in controlling and treating M. pneumoniae infections as the efficacy of existing therapies is jeopardized by evolving resistance mechanisms. Conclusion: Lessons learned from previous outbreaks underscore the importance of adaptive treatment strategies and proactive management approaches. Addressing these complexities demands a holistic approach integrating advanced technologies, genomic surveillance, and adaptive clinical strategies to effectively combat this pathogen.

Gladiolus is a highly allogamous flower plant, but owing to the prolonged juvenile phase, asexual propagation is preferred, which acts as a barrier for the induction of natural genetic variability in gladiolus. Therefore, the induced mutagenesis could be utilized for the creation of desirable genotypes, without altering their basic agronomic features. An analysis of the optimum doses of γ radiation for the induction of fruitful mutations could be achieved in short period of time, compared with the conventional method of breeding. The objectives of this study were to perform radiosensitivity tests on various gladiolus genotypes using different doses of gamma rays and to determine the optimal dose of radiation dose for obtaining the greatest number of mutants. The present experiment was carried out during the winter-spring seasons, for the four consecutive years of 2017–18, 2018–19, 2019–20, and 2020–21. The seven genotypes of gladiolus were exposed to seven doses of gamma rays (60Cobalt). Plants irradiated with radiation doses lower than 4.5 Kr (G1) had greater plant survivability than the higher doses of gamma rays (≥5.0 Kr). The radiation of G0 (0 Kr) result in highest plant survivability, while radiation dose of G6 (6.5 Kr) resulted lowest survivability. LD25 and BD50 for all the genotypes were achieved except for V5 and V7, similarly the median lethal doses (LD50) for V3 and V4 genotypes had been achieved. The highest flower blindness percent and percent abnormal plants were observed at G5 and G6 and between the 4.0 Kr (G1) and 5.5 Kr (G4) gamma ray doses, respectively. The flower colour mutation frequency was recorded highest in genotypes Tiger Flame at 5.0 Kr (V7G3), while the Flower colour mutation spectrum was identified between 4.0 Kr (G1) to 5.5 Kr (G4) in all the genotypes except for genotypes V5 and V7. For the generation of higher phenotypic variations, radiation dose between 4.0 Kr (G1) and 5.5 Kr (G4) were found the most prominent. Specifically the gamma rays radiation dose of 5.5 Kr (G4) resulted in the highest flower colour mutation frequency. These isolated mutant lines will broaden the gladiolus gene pool and support future gladiolus breeding experiments.

Measurement of gas concentrations is crucial for the calculation of emissions from livestock buildings. The study aimed to examine how the concentrations of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) and ammonia (NH3) vary seasonally and influenced by climatic conditions in loose housing cattle sheds in India. Two dairy cow sheds with different layouts, floor types, and cleaning practices were selected for measurements during the summer, rainy, and winter seasons. The concentrations of CO2, CH4, and NH3 exhibited significant variations, ranging from 405 to 717 ppm for CO2, 0.01 to 16.12 ppm for CH4, and 0.00 to 1.90 ppm for NH3. The winter season showed higher levels of CO2 and CH4, while NH3 concentrations were higher during the summer season. Notable differences were observed in CO2 and CH4 levels between sheds during feeding, as well as in CO2 levels during cleaning activities. The study revealed a weak correlation between greenhouse gases, ammonia, and climatic conditions in the cattle sheds, except for a moderate positive correlation between CO2 and relative humidity during winter which means other factors such as housing design, facilities and practices play a significant role.

This study aimed to detect picobirnavirus (PBV) in the fecal samples of wild and domestic animals from 2014 to 2016 in the Amazon biome. Fecal samples from different animals, including birds (n = 41) and mammals (n = 217), were used. The PAGE test showed negativity for PBV. However, 32 samples (12.4%, 32/258) showed positive results in RT-PCR analyses. Among the positive samples, pigs and cats, both with 28.12% (9/32), registered the highest frequencies. In a phylogenetic analysis, eight sequences from positive samples were grouped in the Genogroup 1 of PBV (PBV GI). PBV occurrence was significantly related to cats and pigs but not other mammals or birds, independently of their geographical origin. A nucleotide analysis demonstrated similarity among the feline group but the absence of a defined structure between the clades. PBVs are highly widespread viruses that can affect the most diverse types of hosts in the Amazon biome, including humans.

Abstract Background Medulloblastoma (MB) patients with MYC oncogene amplification or overexpression exhibit extremely poor prognoses and therapy resistance. However, MYC itself has been one of the most challenging targets for cancer treatment. Here, we identify a novel marinopyrrole natural derivative, MP1, that shows desirable anti-MYC and anti-cancer activities in MB. Methods In this study, using MYC-amplified (Group 3) and non-MYC amplified MB cell lines in vitro and in vivo, we evaluated anti-cancer efficacies and molecular mechanism(s) of MP1. Results MP1 significantly suppressed MB cell growth and sphere counts and induced G2 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in a MYC-dependent manner. Mechanistically, MP1 strongly downregulated the expression of MYC protein. Our results with RNA-seq revealed that MP1 significantly modulated global gene expression and inhibited MYC-associated transcriptional targets including translation/mTOR targets. In addition, MP1 inhibited MYC-target metabolism, leading to declined energy levels. The combination of MP1 with an FDA-approved mTOR inhibitor temsirolimus synergistically inhibited MB cell growth/survival by downregulating the expression of MYC and mTOR signaling components. Our results further showed that as single agents, both MP1 and temsirolimus, were able to significantly inhibit tumor growth and MYC expression in subcutaneously or orthotopically MYC-amplified MB bearing mice. In combination, there were further anti-MB effects on the tumor growth and MYC expression in mice. Conclusion These preclinical findings highlight the promise of marinopyrrole MP1 as a novel MYC inhibition approach for MYC-amplified MB.

The present study was carried out during 2021 and 2022 at ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi to evaluate the diversity among 83 onion (Allium cepa L.) genotypes utilizing morphological, biochemical, and mineral profiling. Substantial genetic variances were observed across all the investigated traits. Traits such as bulb phenol content, bulb pyruvic acid content, neck thickness, average bulb weight, iron, zinc, and sulphur recorded high genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV) values, whereas plant height, total soluble solids, marketable yield, dry matter, and calcium had moderate GCV as well as PCV values. High heritability was observed for all traits except for iron content, which ranged from 98.32% (bulb phenol content) to 37.93% (Iron). Principle Component Analysis (PCA) extracted 5 principal components (PC1–PC5), accounting for a cumulative variance of 59.88%. The primary contributors to PC1 were average bulb weight, marketable yield, and equatorial diameter, while PC2 was primarily influenced by iron content, bulb pyruvic acid content, and neck thickness. On the basis of Euclidean distance and Ward’s D2 analysis, all the genotypes were grouped into three clusters. Cluster 1 showed the highest values for dry matter, iron and zinc content. Cluster 2 consisted of genotypes with higher values for plant height, polar diameter, average bulb weight, calcium, potassium, and sulphur content, whereas it showed lower values for neck thickness. Cluster 3 exhibited higher values for equatorial diameter, total soluble solids and marketable yield. Greater genetic diversity offers breeders enhanced opportunities to identify promising genotypes for selection or utilization as parents in hybrid breeding programmes.

This study focuses on standardizing sampling techniques and comparing various methods of sample allocation to effectively estimate apple area and production in the Himalayan region of India. We investigate different stratification tools,in formulating a sampling plan using information gathered from select orchardists in the locale during the 2016-17 period, it becomes essential to explore diverse methodologies to define the most suitable stratum boundaries, ascertain the requisite number of strata, and identify the optimal sample size. The stratification process, underpinned by the ''Area under Apple'' variable, which demonstrates a pronounced association with apple production, assumes a central role in this endeavor Several methods are utilized to construct strata, such as equalizing strata totals, cumulative equalization, equalization of ½{r(x) + f(x)} and equalization of f(x) . We assess their efficiencies in estimating total apple production in the study district. The combination of the ''Cum f(x)'' of Neyman allocation demonstrates the lowest variance and the highest efficiency within a range of 2–4 strata, coupled with an increase in sample size from 10 to 40. Consequently, it can be inferred that the ''Cum f(x)'' method, particularly with L > 2, is preferable for estimating apple production in the Himalayan region of India.

The psychological underpinnings and processes of caste have remained obscure. This special issue of Caste: A Global Journal on Social Exclusion focusing on Caste and Psychology is an initial contribution that lays the ground for developing a critical psychology of caste. In this introductory article, I situate the special issue in the historical and contemporary context. I show that the historical roots of psychological approach to caste go deep. The revolutionary thinking and activism of Mahatma Jotirao Phule and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar provided a useful foundation for a critical psychology of caste to flourish. Unfortunately, this foundation remained under-appreciated in the subsequent academic and social engagement on caste. Next, I review the contemporary research on the psychological dimension of caste and highlight emerging themes that illustrate contemporary approaches. I argue that there is need of a collective endeavor in the form of a new field of study, namely, ‘critical psychology of caste’, to integrate divergent perspectives and contributions addressing the psychological dimension of caste. The special issue is a small step in that direction.

Most research on caste prejudice is rooted in personality and individual difference approaches. As a result, there has been limited understanding of caste prejudice as an aspect of group psychology shaped by peoples’ sense of group positions. Drawing on the social identity approach in social psychology (Reicher et al. 2010), this article proposes a group-level psychological conceptualisation of caste prejudice and examines its relevance for understanding contemporary expressions of casteism. Using a cross-sectional correlational survey design and a purposive sample comprising different caste categories (N=278), we examined associations between socio-demographic factors, personality and individual difference factors, caste prejudice, subjective identification with caste, opposition to reservations, and endorsement of discriminatory practices. The data was analysed using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, ANOVA, and Multiple Linear Regression. We found that members of historically advantaged caste groups are more likely to endorse caste prejudice. Caste prejudice, in turn, significantly predicted opposition to reservations and endorsement of discriminatory practices. Importantly, those seeking to glorify their caste identity were found to be more likely to endorse caste prejudice. The psychological attachment to caste identity was not found to be associated with caste prejudice. All results were found to be significant even after statistically controlling for socio-demographic and personality-individual difference factors, suggesting the unique contribution of social identity-based analysis. We discuss the implications of our findings for theory, research, and efforts for social change.

A corkscrew-shaped spirochaete named Leptospira interrogans causes the infectious disease called leptospirosis. Leptospirosis, a growing public health concern worldwide, from subclinical infections to potentially lethal pulmonary hemorrhage. The disease caused by the pathogenic Leptospira, poses a threat to both humans and animals, and its transmission occurs through contact with infected animals, contaminated water, and soil. The prevalence of leptospirosis is influenced by various factors, including climate, urban development, and animal-rearing practices. It can manifest with severe symptoms in humans, making early diagnosis crucial. Diagnostic methods like microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) are widely used for the screening of leptospira infection. Molecular technique like PCR and qPCR offering higher sensitivity and rapidity. This paper meta-analyses the incidence of leptospirosis in various animals based on the literature published from 2005 to 2023 and provides prevalence of the disease in various animal including humans. Results suggest the significance prevalence of the disease in humans and various animal species, namely buffalo, rodents, and dogs. Coastal regions in India were particularly vulnerable to the disease. Efforts to control leptospirosis include surveillance programs and public health initiatives. Understanding the epidemiology and prevalence of leptospirosis, as highlighted in this paper, is essential for implementing effective preventive measures. Finally, a continued research, diagnostic advancements, public awareness campaigns and addressing research gaps in epidemiology of the disease are critical in mitigating the impact on human and animal health. This review provides important data for public health authorities, veterinarians, scientists and for the public, in general.

Abstract Organic semiconductors based on conjugated donor-acceptor (D–A) polymers are a unique platform for electronic, spintronic, and energy-harvesting devices. Understanding the electronic structure of D–A polymers with a small band gap is essential for developing next-generation technologies. Here, we investigate the electronic structure and optical spectra of cyclopentadithiophene-based closed/open-shell D–A polymers using density functional theory and the Bethe–Salpeter equation based on G $$_0$$ 0 W $$_0$$ 0 approximation. We explored the role of different acceptor units and chemical substitutions on the structural changes and, more importantly, electronic, optical, and dielectric behavior. We found that the computed first exciton peak of the polymers agreed well with the available experimentally measured optical gap. Furthermore, D–A polymers with open-shell character display higher dielectric constant than the closed-shell polymers. We show that the exceptional performance of polycyclopentadithiophene-thiophenylthiadiazoloquinoxaline (PCPDT-TTQ) as a scalable n-type material for Faradaic supercapacitors can be partly ascribed to its elevated dielectric constant. Consequently, these D–A polymers, characterized by their high dielectric constants, exhibit significant potential for various applications, including energy storage, organic electronics, and the production of dielectric films.

AbstractBackground India recorded the first outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in North-eastern region (NER) in the year 2020.Aim The current study was undertaken to investigate the transmission of African swine fever virus (ASFV) in the wild boars of Northeast India, particularly of Assam.Material and Methods ASF suspected mortal tissue remains and blood samples of wild boars collected from different locations of Assam were screened for molecular detection of swine viruses which includes Classical swine fever virus, Porcine Circovirus 2, Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus and ASFV.Results One sample each from Manas and Nameri National Parks was detected positive for ASFV. Besides this, one of the samples was positive for CSFV and one of the ASFV positive samples was also positive for PCV2. Several striking gross and microscopic alterations were noticed in different organs of ASFV infected animals. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of B646L gene confirmed the presence of ASFV genotype-II in wild boars. Circulation of similar genotype in domestic pigs of NER in the contemporary period as well as locations near to the aforementioned national parks indicates the transmission of ASFV from domestic to wild boars.Clinical Relevance The detection of ASFV in the wild boars of Assam is alarming as it is an impending threat to pig population and other endangered species (particularly Pygmy hog), making it increasingly daunting to control the disease.Conclusion Chances are high for ASFV to become endemic in Assam region if stringent measures are not taken at proper time.

Abstract The home range of a species is determined by a complex interplay of extrinsic and intrinsic factors, which can have profound impacts on the species’ resource use. Understanding these dynamics is especially important for conserving critically endangered species. In this study, we used satellite telemetry to investigate the home range of the critically endangered lesser florican (Sypheotides indicus) in Gujarat, India. We analysed GPS locations from 10 lesser floricans deployed with GPS/GSM transmitters between 2020 and 2022. The average home range size (95% KDE) was 10.73 ± 10.70 km2 (mean ± SD), while the average core area (50% KDE) was 1.95 ± 1.56 km2 (mean ± SD). The monthly and daily distances covered were 286.29 ± 599.42 km and 10.11 ± 19.78 km, respectively. Our analysis indicated that suitable habitats and movement patterns were the most important factors explaining the variation in home range size. Specifically, our results suggest that lesser floricans prefer multi-use agro-grassland habitat systems with heterogeneous structures to accommodate different life history requirements. This preference may reflect the depletion and degradation of grasslands across the species’ range. Therefore, managing grassland habitats amidst croplands should be one of the key conservation strategies for the lesser florican.

Using satellite telemetry, it is possible to track long-distance migrant birds with high accuracy and greater spatial coverage. However, prior to 2014, less than 1% of bird species in India had been monitored using this technology. Between January and February 2022, we deployed leg-mounted solar GPS/GSM satellite transmitters to Common Cranes and Demoiselle Cranes (two each) to study home ranges, movement, migration patterns, and habitat use. We used 95% kernels to define the total home range size and 50% kernels to delimit the core areas. The winter habitat use was assessed using Generalized Linear Models (GLM). The average home range of Common Cranes and Demoiselle Cranes was estimated as 161.22 ± 172.08 km2 and 971.40 ± 1023.57 km2, respectively. During migration, Common Crane-1 and Common Crane-2 traveled an average of 471.19 ± 442.42 and 176.97 ± 24.82 km per day, and Demoiselle Crane-1 and Demoiselle Crane-2 covered an average daily distance of 168.10 ± 203.77 and 192.97 ± 250.72 km, respectively. Water bodies and croplands were the most important habitat variables influencing crane presence positively. In recent years, the share of food grain crops within the study area has declined from 43% in 1994–1995 to 36% in 2014–2015, while the share of cotton crops has doubled from 11% to 20%, indicating a probable cause of concern in the near future.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of trans-nasal Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG) block over other treatments for Post-Dural Puncture Headache (PDPH) management. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted on databases for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) comparing trans-nasal SPG blockade for the management of PDPH over other treatment modalities. All outcomes were pooled using the Mantel-Haenszel method and random effect model. Analyses of all outcomes were performed as a subgroup based on the type of control interventions (conservative, intranasal lignocaine puffs, sham, and Greater Occipital Nerve [GON] block). The quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. Results: After screening 1748 relevant articles, 9 RCTs comparing SPG block with other interventions (6 conservative treatments, 1 sham, 1 GON and 1 intranasal lidocaine puff) were included in this meta-analysis. SPG block demonstrated superiority over conservative treatment in pain reduction at 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h after interventions and treatment failures with “very low” to “moderate” quality of evidence. The SPG block failed to demonstrate superiority over conservative treatment in pain reduction beyond 6 h, need for rescue treatment, and adverse events. SPG block demonstrated superiority over intranasal lignocaine puff in pain reduction at 30 min, 1 h, 6 h, and 24 h after interventions. SPG block did not show superiority or equivalence in all efficacy and safety outcomes as compared to sham and GON block. Conclusion: Very Low to moderate quality evidence suggests the superiority of SPG block over conservative treatment and lignocaine puff for short-term pain relief from PDPH. A rapid, selective, and sensitive liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the quantitation of MO-OH-Nap tropolone (MO-OH-Nap) in mouse plasma. MO-OH-Nap is an α-substituted tropolone with anti-proliferative properties in various cancer cell lines. Detection and separation of analytes was achieved on an ACE Excel C18 (1.7 µm, 100 × 2.1 mm, MAC-MOD Analytical, Chadds Ford, PA, USA) column with mobile phase consisting of 0.05% trifluoroacetic acid in water (mobile phase A) and 0.05% trifluoroacetic acid in acetonitrile (mobile phase B), with an isocratic elution of 15:85% (A:B) at a total flow rate of 0.25 mL/min. The LC-MS/MS system was operated at unit resolution in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, using precursor ion > product ion combination of 249.10 > 202.15 m/z for MO-OH-Nap and 305.10 > 215.05 m/z for the internal standard (IS), BA-SM-OM. The MS/MS response was linear over a concentration range of 1 to 500 ng/mL with a correlation coefficient (r2) of ≥0.987. The within- and between-batch precision (%RSD) and accuracy (%Bias) were within acceptable limits. The validated method was successfully applied to determine MO-OH-Nap metabolic stability, plasma protein binding, and bio-distribution studies of MO-OH-Nap in CD-1 mice.

Applying a pan-astrovirus (AstV) RT-hemi-nested PCR assay, we report here high detection rates (28.3%, 15/53) of AstVs in the small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata) on the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts. Based on deduced amino acid (aa) identities and phylogenetic analysis of long RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) sequences (~315 aa, partial RdRp), the AstVs detected in the mongooses (designated as Mon-AstVs) were classified into two distinct groups (deduced aa identities of 66.45–67.30% between the groups). The putative RdRps of the Mon-AstVs shared low deduced aa identities with those of AstVs from other host species (Astroviridae.

Abstract Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) led to a global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Early in the pandemic, efforts were made to test the SARS-CoV-2 antiviral efficacy of repurposed medications that were already approved and available for other indications, including hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and azithromycin (AZI). To reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 exposure for clinical-trial study participants and to conform with lockdowns and social distancing guidelines, biospecimen collection for HCQ and AZI included at-home dried blood spot (DBS) collection rather than standard venipuncture by trained clinicians. In this study, we developed and validated the first sensitive and selective simultaneous LC–MS/MS method to accurately quantitate the concentration of HCQ, HCQ metabolites (Desethylchloroquine [DCQ], Bisdesethylchloroquine [BDCQ], Monodesethylhydroxychloroquine [DHCQ]) and AZI extracted from DBS. The validated method was successfully applied for the quantification of over 2000 DBS specimens to evaluate the pharmacokinetic profile of AZI, HQC, and its metabolites. This new method has a small sample volume requirement (~ 10 µL), results in high sensitivity (1 ng/mL), and would facilitate remotely conducted therapeutic drug monitoring.

Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of dexmedetomidine and clonidine as an adjuvant to local anesthetics in BPBs. Methods: Two investigators independently searched databases to identify all RCTs comparing the efficacy and/or safety of dexmedetomidine and clonidine as an adjuvant to local anesthetics in BPBs. All outcomes were pooled using the inverse variance method with a random-effect model. An I2 test was used to assess heterogeneity. The source of heterogeneity was explored through meta-regression. The quality of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. Results: Out of 123 full texts assessed, 24 studies (1448 patients) were included in the analysis. As compared to clonidine, dexmedetomidine groups showed significantly longer sensory block duration (MD = 173.31; 95% CI 138.02‒208.59; I2 = 99%; GRADE approach evidence: high); motor block duration (MD = 158.35; 95% CI 131.55‒185.16; I2 = 98%; GRADE approach evidence: high), duration of analgesia (MD = 203.92; 95% CI 169.25‒238.58; I2 = 99%; GRADE approach evidence- high), and provided higher grade quality of block (RR = 1.97; 95% CI 1.60‒2.41; I2 = 0%; GRADE approach evidence: moderate). The block positioning technique (regression coefficient: 51.45, p = 0.005) was observed as a significant predictor of the heterogeneity in the case of sensory block duration. No significant difference was observed for the risk of hypotension (RR = 2.59; 95% CI 0.63‒10.66; I2 = %). Conclusion: Moderate to high-quality evidence suggests dexmedetomidine is a more efficacious adjuvant to local anesthetic in BPBs than clonidine.

Background: Peyronie’s disease (PD) is a localized fibrosis of tunica albuginea, which causes the anatomical and functional changes to the penis. Corporoplasty with grafting is indicated in severe (>60°) and complex curvature. Buccal mucosa is the most favored autologous graft material nowadays. The ventrolateral aspect of lingual mucosa has similar histological features to the rest of the oral cavity. Methods: This study aimed to test the efficacy, safety, durability, and reproducibility of corporoplasty with lingual mucosal graft (LMG) in the surgical treatment of PD in terms of surgical outcome, sexual function, and donor site complications. This prospective study included 19 patients of PD with severe and complex curvature, who underwent corporoplasty with LMG. Surgical and functional outcomes were assessed at follow-up planned at 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years. Results: The mean operative time was 126.31 ± 21.45 min. Additional Nesbit’s plication to correct the residual deformity was required in 26% (5 / 19) of patients. Straightening of the penis (curvature 1 cm) postoperatively was achieved in 63% (12 / 19) of patients and a shortening of penis occurred in 5% (1 / 19) of patients. Newer onset erectile dysfunction developed in 11% (2 / 19) of patients, and patient and partner satisfaction rates were 89% (17 / 19) and 84% (16 / 19), respectively, in a mean follow-up of 20.66 ± 5.37 months. Donor site complications were minimal and no patient had any salivary changes or speech disturbances. Conclusion: LMG provided excellent short-term results in terms of deformity correction, improved sexual function, and minimal donor site morbidity. The method is simple and reproducible, and multicenter studies with larger number of cases with longer follow-up are required to confirm these favorable results.

Abstract Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is Food and Drug Administration (FDA)‐approved for malaria, systemic and chronic discoid lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Because HCQ has a proposed multimodal mechanism of action and a well‐established safety profile, it is often investigated as a repurposed therapeutic for a range of indications. There is a large degree of uncertainty in HCQ pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters which complicates dose selection when investigating its use in new disease states. Complications with HCQ dose selection emerged as multiple clinical trials investigated HCQ as a potential therapeutic in the early stages of the COVID‐19 pandemic. In addition to uncertainty in baseline HCQ PK parameters, it was not clear if disease‐related consequences of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection/COVID‐19 would be expected to impact the PK of HCQ and its primary metabolite desethylhydroxychloroquine (DHCQ). To address the question whether SARS‐CoV‐2 infection/COVID‐19 impacted HCQ and DHCQ PK, dried blood spot samples were collected from SARS‐CoV‐2(−)/(+) participants administered HCQ. When a previously published physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was used to fit the data, the variability in exposure of HCQ and DHCQ was not adequately captured and DHCQ concentrations were overestimated. Improvements to the previous PBPK model were made by incorporating the known range of blood to plasma concentration ratios (B/P) for each compound, adjusting HCQ and DHCQ distribution settings, and optimizing DHCQ clearance. The final PBPK model adequately captured the HCQ and DHCQ concentrations observed in SARS‐CoV‐2(−)/(+)participants, and incorporating COVID‐19‐associated changes in cytochrome P450 activity did not further improve model performance for the SARS‐CoV‐2(+) population.

An experiment was conducted during winter (rabi) seasons of 2018–19 (vM2), 2019–20 (vM3) and 2020–21(vM4) at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand to evaluate the effect of gamma rays treated gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflorus Andrews) on the post-harvest of different varieties along with their interaction for different qualitative traits The result showed that Praha was best cultivars for days to first floret opening, highest number of florets per spikes, highest number of open florets per spikes, rachis length and weight loss followed by cultivar Candyman for highest diameter of lowest floret, highest vase life and highest water uptake by spikes. Among the different gamma doses, the minimum days to first floret opening, the highest diameter of first floret, the days to first floret withering, the number of florets, the number of open florets, the rachis length, vase life, water uptake by spikes and the weight loss were recorded in non-irradiated corms. Among interaction, V2G0 (Praha + control) showed best result for days to first floret opening, total number of florets per spike, total number of open florets/spike and rachis length. Most important characters, vase life was positively correlated with rachis length at 5.0 and 6.0 Kr respectively, total number of florets/spike and total number of open florets/spike at 5.0 Kr. Study concluded that gamma rays affect the qualitative as well quantitative traits of gladiolus and do not have positive effect on vase life attributes.

COVID-19 pandemic is considered a global crisis that adversely impacted the world economy. The virus possessed a serious threat to different sectors including agricultural, livestock, poultry and fish sectors in both developing and developed countries. COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown for a long period have not only caused enormous distress to the millions of poor and marginal farmers for saving their crops and/or livestock but also affected livestock, poultry production systems and associated value chains, nutrition, health care and labour availability. In addition, COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the fishery sector through disruption in fish supply and value chains and had noteworthy effects on income of fish stakeholders, especially in developing countries. In this regard, the current review discussed the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on agricultural, livestock, poultry and fish sectors.

The livestock industry faces significant challenges, with disease outbreaks being a particularly devastating issue. These diseases can disrupt the food supply chain and the livelihoods of those involved in the sector. To address this, there is a growing need to enhance the health and well-being of livestock animals, ultimately improving their performance while minimizing their environmental impact. To tackle the considerable challenge posed by disease epidemics, multiomics approaches offer an excellent opportunity for scientists, breeders, and policymakers to gain a comprehensive understanding of animal biology, pathogens, and their genetic makeup. This understanding is crucial for enhancing the health of livestock animals. Multiomic approaches, including phenomics, genomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, microbiomics, and metaproteomics, are widely employed to assess and enhance animal health. High-throughput phenotypic data collection allows for the measurement of various fitness traits, both discrete and continuous, which, when mathematically combined, define the overall health and resilience of animals, including their ability to withstand diseases. Omics methods are routinely used to identify genes involved in host-pathogen interactions, assess fitness traits, and pinpoint animals with disease resistance. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) help identify the genetic factors associated with health status, heat stress tolerance, disease resistance, and other health-related characteristics, including the estimation of breeding value. Furthermore, the interaction between hosts and pathogens, as observed through the assessment of host gut microbiota, plays a crucial role in shaping animal health and, consequently, their performance. Integrating and analyzing various heterogeneous datasets to gain deeper insights into biological systems is a challenging task that necessitates the use of innovative tools. Initiatives like MiBiOmics, which facilitate the visualization, analysis, integration, and exploration of multiomics data, are expected to improve prediction accuracy and identify robust biomarkers linked to animal health. In this review, we discuss the details of multiomics concerning the health and well-being of livestock animals.

The ever-changing environmental conditions and pollution are the prime reasons for the onset of several emerging and re-merging diseases. This demands the faster designing of new drugs to curb the deadly diseases in less waiting time to cure the animals and humans. Drug molecules interact with only protein surface on specific locations termed as ligand binding sites (LBS). Therefore, the knowledge of LBS is required for rational drug designing. Existing geometrical LBS prediction methods rely on search of cavities based on the fact that 83% of the LBS found in deep cavities, however, these methods usually fail where LBS localize outside deep cavities. To overcome this challenge, the present work provides an artificial neural network (ANN) based method to predict LBS outside deep cavities in animal proteins including human to facilitate drug designing. In the present work a feed-forward backpropagation neural network was trained by utilizing 38 structural, atomic, physiochemical, and evolutionary discriminant features of LBS and non-LBS residues localized in the extracted roughest patch on protein surface. The performance of this ANN based prediction method was found 76% better for those proteins where cavity subspace (extracted by MetaPocket 2.0, a consensus method) failed to predict LBS due to their localization outside the deep cavities. The prediction of LBS outside deep cavities will facilitate in drug designing for the proteins where it is not possible due to lack of LBS information as the geometrical LBS prediction methods rely on extraction of deep cavities.

Millions of individuals throughout the world suffer from lymphatic filariasis (LF), which is a morbid disease caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. These infections belong to tissue-invading nematodes and are one of the major neglected tropical diseases that often result in permanent and enduring disability among individuals in endemic regions. Due to combination therapy, LF eradication has drastically decreased infections globally. The development of blood micro-sampling techniques allowing precise quantitation of drugs in blood would facilitate pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in remote populations. Therefore, an LC-MS/MS bioanalytical method was utilized to analyze albendazole (ABZ), albendazole sulfone (ABZ-ON), albendazole sulfoxide (ABZ-OX), and probenecid (PR) in plasma and dried blood spots. Solid-phase extraction was utilized to extract the analyte from both plasma and blood-spiked DBS. Analytes of interest were eluted with a gradient mobile system using 0.05% formic acid in water (A) and 0.05% formic acid in methanol (B) and separated using a reversed-phase Acquity ®BEH C18 UPLC column (100 × 2.1 mm, 1.7 µm). Precision and accuracy at each QC level were within the acceptable limit, i.e., ±15% for all analytes in both the matrices. Tests for stability under laboratory and storage conditions indicated that no notable changes were observed for plasma and DBS. The LC-MS/MS method demonstrated its capability to consistently identify all target analytes (ABZ, ABZ-ON, ABZ-OX, and PR) at low concentrations, even at the small specimen volumes obtained from DBS cards. This confirms the efficacy and durability of DBS cards as a micro-sampling technique. Moreover, it enhances collection efforts for therapeutic drug monitoring in remote locations for patients infected with lymphatic filariasis.

Pig farming has become a strategically significant and economically important industry across the globe. It is also a potentially vulnerable sector due to challenges posed by transboundary diseases in which viral infections are at the forefront. Among the porcine viral diseases, African swine fever, classical swine fever, foot and mouth disease, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, pseudorabies, swine influenza, and transmissible gastroenteritis are some of the diseases that cause substantial economic losses in the pig industry. It is a well-established fact that vaccination is undoubtedly the most effective strategy to control viral infections in animals. From the period of Jenner and Pasteur to the recent new-generation technology era, the development of vaccines has contributed significantly to reducing the burden of viral infections on animals and humans. Inactivated and modified live viral vaccines provide partial protection against key pathogens. However, there is a need to improve these vaccines to address emerging infections more comprehensively and ensure their safety. The recent reports on new-generation vaccines against swine viruses like DNA, viral-vector-based replicon, chimeric, peptide, plant-made, virus-like particle, and nanoparticle-based vaccines are very encouraging. The current review gathers comprehensive information on the available vaccines and the future perspectives on porcine viral vaccines.

Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy and farmers play significant role in sustaining the sector. However, farmers face several challenges such as poor market access and limited access to market information which adversely affect their marketing performance. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the marketing performance and factors influencing farmers choice for agricultural output marketing channels in garden pea in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The study utilized primary data collected through structured questionnaires administered via the interview method to a sample size of 400 farmers selected through a multistage stratified random sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and acharya approach to study the marketing performance. Further, a multinomial logistic regression model was used to determine the factors that influence farmers marketing choice of marketing channels. Additionally, the constraints experienced by farmers during marketing were investigated using garret ranking. The study revealed that farmers who sold their pea directly to consumer had higher marketing performance than those who sold through market intermediaries such as local traders, commission agents and wholesalers. Further, the results indicated that farm income, farm experience, distance to the market and market information were significant determinants of farmers choice for marketing channels. Whereas, lack of market consultancy, high commission chargers and poor transportation were the major constraints faced by farmers during marketing of pea. The findings of this study highlight the need for policymakers to develop and implement interventions that enhance farmers marketing skill, facilitate access to markets, improve negotiation power which can lead to higher incomes for farmers, improve their livelihoods, better quality produce for consumers and a more efficient and sustainable food system.

Sun safety research has mainly been conducted in the West, whereas little is known about sun protection practices in India. Using a survey design with a representative sample, we aimed to understand the frequency of sun protection practices in India. We also examined associations between demographic covariates and sun safe behaviours. We surveyed a representative sample (N = 1560) from the Indian population in November 2022. The study variables included sun safe behaviours, sunburn experience, demographic information, and skin tone. We employed descriptive and regression analyses to examine the prevalence of behaviours and their associations. To mitigate potential sampling biases, we applied poststratification weights in the analyses. More than half of the participants (64.2%) routinely performed at least one sun safe behaviour, with only 4.9% of the sample reporting no engagement with sun safe behaviours in the last 12 months. Physical protection (e.g., long sleeves, shade/umbrella) were more common than sunscreen use. Regression analysis showed that higher subjective social status, being younger, and living in one of the Eastern Indian states were the strongest predictors of sun protection practices. Our findings fill an important knowledge gap in global sun safe research, highlighting the urgent need for public sun safety education. Scalable and targeted interventions are needed to promote sun safety awareness and practices among people.

The study was carried during kharif 2021 and zaid 2022 at Vegetable Research Centre of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand to investigate the nutritional properties of bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl] across various genotypes and hybrid combinations. Bottle gourd, a versatile crop with nutritional benefits, was analysed for traits like dry matter content, ascorbic acid, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar, total sugar and total soluble solids. Promising parent genotypes, P6, P1 and P4 were identified based on their per se performance. The hybrid combination P2 × P7 exhibited exceptional results considering relative heterosis, heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis. Parent P3 demonstrated strong general combining ability for several traits. Notably, specific combining ability analysis identified hybrids like P2 × P6, P5 × P6, and P1 × P4 as promising for multiple traits. The prevalence of significant σ2SCA values over σ2GCA values highlighted the dominance gene action's role in governing these traits, suggesting the potential of hybrid breeding for genetic enhancement. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of nutrient quality and presents strategies for harnessing hybrid breeding to improve these traits in bottle gourd.

Abstract In this article, we address the problem of lung cancer diagnosis from gene expression data, which is now recognized as an effective means for early treatment and prevention of cancer. Specifically, we employ Fuzzy min–max (FMM) classifier for the task which is a well‐known neuro‐fuzzy neural network. The idea is to take advantage of the fuzzy class definitions whose boundaries are set using the min–max hyperbox constructed for each class. We implement two advanced FMM neural network architectures: general Fuzzy min–max (GFMM) and enhanced Fuzzy min–max (EFMM) for the classification of lung cancer subtypes from gene expression data. The advantage of GFMM is that it involves very simple operations for hyperbox manipulation, and can handle both labeled and unlabeled data. On the other hand, EFMM proposes three heuristic rules related to hyperbox expansion, contraction and the overlap test, which enhances the learning algorithm. We perform the classification of gene expression data using these two models, and then we analyze the performance by visualizing the hyperboxes obtained after training, and compare the accuracies of these classifiers with the state of the art. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) is used for selecting the informative genes from the high‐dimensional gene expression data. From the empirical results, we observe that GFMM with LASSO gives the best performance of all, with validation accuracy of 98.04% and cross‐validation accuracy of 94.06%.

Background and Objective: This study aimed to explore the association between coronary artery calcification and air pollutant exposure from all potential sources using microenvironment modeling. Methods: The present study recruited consecutive consenting patients, who visiting the radiology division of the tertiary cardiac specialty hospital for coronary artery calcification (CAC) evaluation, after obtaining institutional human ethics approval. Fifty participants each with CAC scores 0.05). Conclusion: Exposure to air pollutants from the workplace and outdoors was significantly associated with higher coronary artery calcification, thereby increasing the risk for coronary artery diseases.

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that progresses in remitting and relapsing phases. Most of these patients have mild-to-moderate illness, which can be managed with topical medications or could be thought of as continuing therapy after remission. Potential therapeutic efficacy is offered, and systemic treatment's negative side effects are constrained. Topical therapies have recently advanced in tandem with recent advancements in our understanding of psoriasis. To improve the quality of life of patients, appropriate knowledge and application of these topical agents are crucial.

The usage of natural fiber–reinforced composites (NFRCs) may help the global fraternity in achieving their long-term goal of developing sustainable products having minimum effect on ecosystem, during and at the end of their service life. The primary manufacturing processes such as injection molding, hand-layup, and compression moulding have been extensively used to fabricate products with simpler profiles. However, the fabrication of complex products necessitates secondary manufacturing processes. In current investigation, the short fiber (banana and bagasse)–based polypropylene composites (10, 15, and 20 wt.%) were fabricated using extrusion-injection moulding process. Banana fiber–based composites recorded 1.8%, 4.7%, and 3.25%, higher tensile strength than bagasse fiber–based composites at 10, 15, and 20 wt.% fiber loading, respectively. However, bagasse fiber–based composites performed distinctly better in flexural properties. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were employed to analyze the failure mechanisms and thermal degradation behavior (analyzed at 5%, 25%, 50%, and 75% weight loss) of the fabricated composites. The ultrasonic welded joints of banana fiber–based composites recorded higher failure load prior to the fracture as compared to bagasse fiber–based composites upto 15% fiber loading. It was established that ultrasonic welding can be successfully employed for joining of NFRCs.

Abstract Endangered Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) are renowned for their resilience and as a flagship of successful conservation and management. Lions dispersing out of the Gir forest have established themselves in the coastal habitats for about 25 years. We propose that the home range and spatial distribution of lions inhabiting the coastal habitats would be distinct from the forested habitats of the protected area. Each individual was monitored for an average of 367.2 ± 99.05 days from 2019 to 2021. The mean core area was 33.8 km2 (50% FK, SE 8.7 km2) and the overall average range was 171.8 km2 (90% FK, SE 40.5 km2). The home ranges were significantly larger for lions residing in the coastal area compared to lions in the protected area. The lion distribution model was built on MaxEnt, and inputs included location fixes of lions and variables, including 18 land use categories and Euclidean distance to linear infrastructures and human settlements. Lions were shown to use forest habitat patches extensively, followed by available habitats around water sources and wasteland. The study highlights the importance of corridors connecting to the Gir protected area and the importance of coastal forest patches for lion conservation and management.

The information on the ranging behaviour and migration pattern of vultures is of critical conservation importance. Vultures’ range over vast areas in human-dominated landscapes where anthropogenic activities may influence their long-term survival. This paper uses the satellite telemetry of 11 individuals of six vulture species to assess their home ranges and seasonal movement patterns. The study aimed to find daily and monthly distances covered by vultures, their home range size, and the influence of breeding season on resource utilisation and activity rates. A total of 114,820 locations were collected between October 2020 and November 2021. The results indicate that the size of the core area is smaller during the breeding season of the resident species, such as the Indian vulture (Gyps indicus), white-rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis), and red-headed vulture (Sarcogyps calvus) than the non-breeding season. vulture’s daily and monthly movement (mean) also decreased in the breeding season. The annual home range and core areas, calculated as 95% and 50%Utilisation Distribution differed between breeding and non-breeding seasons. The migratory vultures moved significantly longer distances across days and months than the resident species. Their annual migration patterns also differed with respect to time and migration routes.

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a debilitating viral infection causing a dermatomal vesicular rash. Many known risk factors exist in India and adults >50 years of age may be especially susceptible to HZ. However, HZ is not a notifiable disease in India and data on incidence and disease burden is lacking. An Expert Consensus Group meeting was conducted with experts from relevant specialties to discuss HZ disease, its local epidemiology, and suggestions for implementing HZ vaccination in the Indian healthcare system. Currently, there is lack of patient awareness, poor reporting practices and general negligence in the treatment of the disease. HZ patients generally approach their general physicians or specialists for diagnosis, which is usually based on patient history and clinical symptoms. Recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) has >90% efficacy and is recommended in adults ≥50 years of age to prevent HZ in the United States. Despite RZV being approved for use, it is not yet available in India. India has a growing elderly population with known risk factors for HZ like immunosuppression, and co-morbidities like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This indicates the need for a targeted immunization program in India. Meeting also emphasized adult vaccine availability and accessibility in the country.

Immunocompromised (IC) populations are at increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). In India, the concern of VPDs in IC populations is particularly acute due to the prevalence of crowded living situations, poor sanitation and variable access to healthcare services. We present a narrative review of IC-related disease and economic burden, risk of VPDs and vaccination guidelines, based on global and India-specific literature (2000–2022). IC conditions considered were cancer, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, respiratory disorders, disorders treated with immunosuppressive therapy, and human immune deficiency virus (HIV). The burden of IC populations in India is comparable to the global population, except for cancer and HIV, which have lower prevalence compared with the global average. Regional and socioeconomic inequalities exist in IC prevalence; VPDs add to the burden of IC conditions, especially in lower income strata. Adult vaccination programs could improve health and reduce the economic impact of VPDs in IC populations.

Moxidectin (MOX) is a milbemycin endectocide recently approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of onchocerciasis in persons at least 12 years of age. MOX has been shown to have a good safety profile in recent clinical trials. The efficacy of MOX for the treatment of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and its potential use in mass drug administration protocols for the elimination of LF is currently under evaluation. In the context of a clinical trial, we investigated the pharmacokinetics and drug interactions of a combination of MOX plus albendazole (ALB) with or without diethylcarbamazine (DEC) compared to ivermectin (IVM) plus ALB with or without DEC in the following four different treatment arms: (I) IVM (0.2mg/kg) plus DEC (6 mg/kg) and ALB (400mg); (II) IVM plus ALB; (III) MOX (8 mg) plus DEC and ALB; and (IV) MOX plus ALB. Drug concentrations were determined using validated liquid chromatography-mass spectrometric methods. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined using standard non-compartmental analysis methods. Statistical analysis was performed using JMP software. Fifty-eight of 164 study participants (53 men and five women) were included with ages ranging from 18 to 63 yrs (mean = 37). MOX apparent oral clearance (Cl/F) ranged from 0.7 to 10.8 L/hr with Cmax values ranging from 20.8 to 314.5 ng/mL. The mean (range) area under the curve (AUC)0-∞ for MOX, 3405 ng*hr/mL (742-11376), and IVM 1906 ng*hr/mL (692-5900), varied over a ~15.3 and ~8.5-fold range, respectively. The geometric mean ratio for Cmax, AUC0-t, and AUC0-∞ were within the no-drug interaction range of 80-125% for all drugs. This indicates that the addition of MOX to ALB alone or ALB plus DEC for LF therapy did not alter the drug exposure of co-administered drugs compared to IVM combinations. An experiment was conducted at Vegetable Research Centre, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, during 2021 and 2022 to determine the nutritional quality, variation and its effect on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Heterosis for nutritional quality in 30 F1 of cucumber obtained by L×T method involving 10 gynoecious and 3 monoecious cucumber, was studied and significant difference was found in all the characters. Based on per se performance, PPCUC-6 (gynoecious) followed by PPCUC-3 (gynoecious) are best performing parents and PPCUC-7 × PCUC-8 (monoecious) is best performing hybrid for most of characters. The cross combination PPCUC-10 × PCUC-28 (monoecious) based on mid parent, PPCUC-10 × PCUC-28 (monoecious) and PPCUC-12 × PCUC-28 (monoecious) based on better parent and PPCUC-12 × PCUC-28 (monoecious) based on standard parent are found best hybrids for maximum traits. PPCUC-3 (gynoecious) and PCUC-28 (monoecious) were best general combiner for most of characters, which can be used as a parents in improvement of nutritional quality. PPCUC-12 × PCUC-28 (monoecious) was best specific combiner for most of characters. Information of gene actions obtained from the study indicates the predominance of dominant gene action which is highly desirable to develop hybrids in cucumber with better nutritional quality.

Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is a predominant infectious agent responsible for infertility in pigs. Globally, it leads to colossal economic loss to the pig rearing communities, especially in the developing countries. The nonstructural gene 1 (NS1) of PPV is responsible for the virus replication, transcription regulation and cytotoxicity. Variations in the NS1 gene could cause increased virulence of the virus and the enhanced virulence raises concern about the effectiveness of the PPV vaccines against newly emerging strains. So, in the present study, we collected 84 samples from different regions of Punjab and Guwahati (Assam) during 2019-2022. Out of 84 samples, 12 samples were positive for PPV-1. The NS1 gene was cloned and sequenced followed by analysis of Indian PPV-1 isolates to understand its evolutionary background, level of divergence and nucleotide/amino acid substitutions. The findings revealed that Indian PPV-1 isolates exhibit nucleotide substitutions with high percent sequence identity. Pairwise distance matrix values of the NS1 gene revealed that local PPV-1 isolates showed maximum divergence from sequences of Brazil, China, Korea and Germany. Furthermore, selection pressure analysis revealed that all the isolates were under positive selection. The findings of the current study warrant whole genome analysis of circulating PPVs in India to identify a putative vaccine strain for combating emerging PPVs.

Neboviruses (NeVs) from the Caliciviridae family have been linked to enteric diseases in bovines and have been detected worldwide. As viruses rely entirely on the cellular machinery of the host for replication, their ability to thrive in a specific host is greatly impacted by the specific codon usage preferences. Here, we systematically analyzed the codon usage bias in NeVs to explore the genetic and evolutionary patterns. Relative Synonymous Codon Usage and Effective Number of Codon analyses indicated a marginally lower codon usage bias in NeVs, predominantly influenced by the nucleotide compositional constraints. Nonetheless, NeVs showed a higher codon usage bias for codons containing G/C at the third codon position. The neutrality plot analysis revealed natural selection as the primary factor that shaped the codon usage bias in both the VP1 (82%) and VP2 (57%) genes of NeVs. Furthermore, the NeVs showed a highly comparable codon usage pattern to bovines, as reflected through Codon Adaptation Index and Relative Codon Deoptimization Index analyses. Notably, yak NeVs showed considerably different nucleotide compositional constraints and mutational pressure compared to bovine NeVs, which appear to be predominantly host-driven. This study sheds light on the genetic mechanism driving NeVs’ adaptability, evolution, and fitness to their host species.

We report results from a detailed study of the neutron star X-ray binary, 4U 1608-52, using observations with AstroSat (Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter/Soft X-ray Telescope) and the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer during its 2016 and 2020 outbursts. The 0.7–20.0 keV spectra could be well described with the disk blackbody and thermal Comptonization model. The best-fitting inner disk temperature is ∼1 keV and radius ∼ ${22.17}_{-2.38}^{+2.57}$ –27.19 ${}_{-1.85}^{+2.03}$ km and no significant evolution was observed in the disk radius after performing flux and time-resolved spectroscopy. We used a multi-Lorentzian approach to fit the power density spectra and obtained broadband noise variability. We estimated the energy-dependent fractional rms and time lag of the broadband noise, and these variations are quantitatively modeled as being due to the coherent variation of the disk emission and the coronal heating rate. Thus, the rapid temporal modeling is consistent with the longer-term spectral evolution where the inner disk radius does not vary, and instead, the variations can be attributed to accretion rate variations that change the inner disk temperature and the coronal heating rate.
