The existing single-pulse search algorithms for fast radio bursts (FRBs) do not adequately consider the frequency bandpass pattern of the pulse, rendering them incomplete for the relatively narrow-spectrum detection of pulses. We present a new search algorithm for narrow-band pulses to update the existing standard pipeline, Bandpass-Adaptive Single-pulse SEarch Toolkit (BASSET). The BASSET employs a time-frequency correlation analysis to identify and remove the noise involved by the zero-detection frequency band, thereby enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the pulses. The BASSET algorithm was implemented on the FAST real dataset of FRB 20190520B, resulting in the discovery of additional 79 pulses through reprocessing. The new detection doubles the number of pulses compared to the previously known 75 pulses, bringing the total number of pulses to 154. In conjunction with the pulse calibration and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulated injection experiments, this work updates the quantified parameter space of the detection rate. Moreover, a parallel-accelerated version of the BASSET code was provided and evaluated through simulation. BASSET has the capacity of enhancing the detection sensitivity and the SNR of the narrow-band pulses from the existing pipeline, offering high performance and flexible applicability. BASSET not only enhances the completeness of the low-energy narrow-band pulse detection in a more robust mode, but also has the potential to further elucidate the FRB luminosity function at a wider energy scale., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJS

We extend a nuclear ab initio framework based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions to investigate shape coexistence and the degradation of the $N=20$ magic number in both even-even and odd-even neutron-rich nuclei. The quantum-number projected generator coordinate method, combined with the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG), is employed to compute their low-lying states. This approach successfully reproduces the coexistence of weakly and strongly deformed states at comparable energies, providing a natural explanation for the emergence of the $N=20$ island of inversion through the IMSRG evolution of the chiral Hamiltonian. The results highlight the essential roles of both dynamic and static collective correlations in reproducing the ordering of nuclear states with distinct shapes. We present phase-connected timing ephemerides, polarization pulse profiles and Faraday rotation measurements of 12 pulsars discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey (CRAFTS). The observational data for each pulsar span at least one year. Among them, PSR J1840+2843 shows subpulse drifting, and five pulsars are detected to exhibit pulse nulling phenomena. PSR J0640$-$0139 and PSR J2031$-$1254 are isolated MSPs with stable spin-down rates ($\dot{P}$) of $4.8981(6) \times $10$^{-20}$\,s\,s$^{-1}$ and $6.01(2) \times $10$^{-21}$\,s\,s$^{-1}$, respectively. Additionally, one pulsar (PSR J1602$-$0611) is in a neutron star - white dwarf binary system with 18.23-d orbit and a companion of $\leq$ 0.65M$_{\odot}$. PSR J1602$-$0611 has a spin period, companion mass, and orbital eccentricity that are consistent with the theoretical expectations for MSP - Helium white dwarf (He - WD) systems. Therefore, we believe it might be an MSP-He WD binary system. The locations of PSRs J1751$-$0542 and J1840+2843 on the $P-\dot{P}$ diagram are beyond the traditional death line. This indicates that FAST has discovered some low $\dot{E}$ pulsars, contributing new samples for testing pulsar radiation theories. Nuclear energy density functional theory (DFT) provides a microscopic approach to describing nuclear masses. By incorporating pairing correlations and deformation within DFT, nuclear masses can be predicted with sub-MeV accuracy. A crucial factor in achieving this precision is the dynamical correlation energy associated with restoring rotational symmetry, known as rotational correction energy (RCE). This correction is typically estimated using the cranking approximation in perturbation theory. In this work, we benchmark the results of these calculations against exact angular-momentum projection (AMP) for both even-even and odd-mass nuclei from light to heavy mass region, utilizing a covariant DFT framework. We find that the RCE, computed using the full moment of inertia (MoI) in the cranking approximation, closely matches the results from exact AMP for both even-even and odd-mass nuclei, with the exception of near-spherical even-even nuclei. For certain configurations in odd-mass nuclei, however, the RCEs can become abnormally small, a phenomenon linked to the divergence of the MoI. We present a statistical analysis of nuclear low-lying states within the framework of multireference covariant density functional theory (MR-CDFT) using a relativistic point-coupling energy density functional (EDF). This study is made possible by the newly developed subspace-projected (SP)-CDFT, where the wave functions of nuclear low-lying states for target EDF parameter sets are expanded in a subspace spanned by the wave functions of low-lying states from training parameter sets. We analyze the global sensitivity of excitation energies, electric quadrupole transition strengths, and the nuclear matrix element of neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{136}$Xe and $^{150}$Nd to EDF parameters, and explore the correlations between these quantities and nuclear matter properties. Multireference density functional theory (MR-DFT) has been a pivotal method for studying nuclear low-lying states and neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay. However, quantifying their theoretical uncertainties has been a significant challenge due to the computational demands. This study introduces a subspace-projected covariant density functional theory (SP-CDFT), which efficiently emulates MR-CDFT calculations for nuclear low-lying states. This approach leverages the eigenvector continuation method combined with the quantum-number projected generator coordinate method, based on a relativistic energy density functional (EDF). We apply SP-CDFT to investigate the correlations among the physical quantities of nuclear matter, nuclear low-lying spectroscopy, and the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in the two heaviest candidate nuclei. Our findings reveal generally strong correlations between the NMEs of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and the excitation energy of the $2_1^+$ state, as well as the $E2$ transition strength, although these correlations vary significantly among nuclei. The Bayesian analysis yields the NMEs $4.34^{+0.09}_{-0.10}$ for $^{136}$Xe and $5.51^{+0.24}_{-0.26}$ for $^{150}$Nd. We present a systematic study on the structural properties of odd-$Z$ superheavy nuclei with proton numbers $Z=117, 119$, and neutron numbers $N$ increasing from $N=170$ to the neutron dripline within the framework of axially deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc). The results are compared with those of even-even superheavy nuclei with proton numbers $Z=118$ and $120$. We analyze various bulk properties of their ground states, including binding energies, quadrupole deformations, root-mean-square radii, nucleon separation energies, and $\alpha$-decay energies. The coexistence of competing prolate and oblate or spherical shapes leads to abrupt changes in both quadrupole deformations and charge radii as functions of neutron numbers. Compared to even-even nuclei, the odd-mass ones exhibit a more complicated transition picture, in which the quantum numbers of $K^\pi$ of the lowest-energy configuration may change with deformation. This may result in the change of angular momentum in the ground-state to ground-state $\alpha$-decay and thus quench the decay rate in odd-mass nuclei. Moreover, our results demonstrate a pronounced proton shell gap at $Z=120$, instead of $Z=114$, which is consistent with the predictions of most covariant density functional theories. Moreover, large neutron shell gaps are found at $N=172$ and $N=258$ in the four isotopic chains, as well as at $N=184$ in the light two isotopic chains with $Z=117$ and $Z=118$, attributed to the nearly-degenerate $3d$ and $4p$ spin-orbit doublet states due to the presence of bubble structure., Comment: 15 pages with 18 figures

We present a benchmark study of generator coordinate method (GCM) combined with eigenvector continuation (EC) in two different schemes for the low-lying states of Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model, where the interaction strength is treated as a controlling parameter, simulating quantum many-body systems with the phase transition from non-collective to collective states. We demonstrate that the EC$_{\rm kmax}$ scheme accurately reproduces the low-lying states of the LMG model. In this scheme, the EC basis consists of the wave functions of low-lying states up to the $k_{\rm max}$-th state of sampling Hamiltonians. Compared to EC$_1$, which only includes the wave functions of the $k$-th state of sampling Hamiltonians for the $k$-th state of a target Hamiltonian, the EC$_{\rm kmax}$ scheme exhibits significantly improved efficiency and accuracy. Nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay in candidate nuclei play a crucial role in interpreting results from current experiments and in designing future ones. Accurate NME values serve as important nuclear inputs for constraining parameters in new physics, such as neutrino mass and the Wilson coefficients of lepton-number-violating (LNV) operators. In this study, we present a comprehensive calculation of NMEs for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{100}$Mo, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe, using nuclear wave functions obtained from multi-reference covariant density functional theory (MR-CDFT). We employ three types of transition potentials at the leading order in chiral effective field theory. Our results, along with recent data, are utilized to constrain the coefficients of LNV operators. The results demonstrate that the combined NMEs based on the Feynman diagrams at the hadronic scale for the nonstandard mechanisms lead to uncertainty by different nuclear models comparable to that for the standard mechanism. The use of NMEs from various nuclear models does not dramatically change the parameter space intervals for the coefficients, although MR-CDFT yields the most stringent constraint. We report a study of the low-lying states of deformed $^{21}$Ne within the framework of quantum-number projected generator coordinate method (PGCM), starting from a chiral two-nucleon-plus-three-nucleon (NN+3N) interaction. The wave functions of states are constructed as a linear combination of a set of axially-deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogliubov (HFB) wave functions with different quadrupole deformations. These HFB wave functions are projected onto different angular momenta and the correct neutron and proton numbers for $^{21}$Ne. The results of calculations based on the effective Hamiltonians derived by normal-ordering the 3N interaction with respect to three different reference states, including the quantum-number projected HFB wave functions for $^{20}$Ne, $^{22}$Ne, and an ensemble of them with equal weights, are compared. We extend multireference covariant density-functional theory (MR-CDFT) based on a relativistic point-coupling energy functional to describe the low-lying states of odd-mass nuclei. The nuclear wave function is constructed as a superposition of quadrupole-octupole deformed mean-field configurations, with projection onto angular momentum, particle numbers, and parity within the framework of the generator coordinate method. Using $^{25}$Mg as an example, we calculate the energy spectrum, electric multipole, and magnetic dipole transition strengths based on three different schemes for the mean-field configurations of odd-mass nuclei. We find that the low-energy structure of $^{25}$Mg is reasonably reproduced in all three schemes. In particular, the effect of octupole correlation is illustrated in the application to the low-lying parity doublets of $^{21}$Ne. Strong octupole correlations have been observed in the low-lying states of atomic nuclei across various mass regions. In this review, we provide an overview of Beyond Mean-Field (BMF) studies of nuclear octupole collective motions with Generator Coordinate Method (GCM) in combination with quantum-number projections that are implemented to restore the broken symmetries in nuclear mean-field states. We highlight recent developments within this framework and their applications to excitation spectra and electromagnetic transition rates in octupole-shaped nuclei and hypernuclei. We discuss the novel phenomena of nucleon clustering in light nuclei. Additionally, we explore the phase transition from octupole vibrations to rotational motions as spin increases in heavy nuclei. Lastly, we examine the status and future prospects of studies on octupole deformation effects in nuclear Schiff moments. The observation of neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay would offer proof of lepton number violation, demonstrating that neutrinos are Majorana particles, while also helping us understand why there is more matter than antimatter in the Universe. If the decay is driven by the exchange of the three known light neutrinos, a discovery would, in addition, link the observed decay rate to the neutrino mass scale through a theoretical quantity known as the nuclear matrix element (NME). Accurate values of the NMEs for all nuclei considered for use in $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiments are therefore crucial for designing and interpreting those experiments. Here, we report the first comprehensive ab initio uncertainty quantification of the $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay NME, in the key nucleus $^{76}$Ge. Our method employs nuclear strong and weak interactions derived within chiral effective field theory and recently developed many-body emulators. Our result, with a conservative treatment of uncertainty, is an NME of $2.60^{+1.28}_{-1.36}$, which, together with the best-existing half-life sensitivity and phase-space factor, sets an upper limit for effective neutrino mass of $187^{+205}_{-62}$ meV. In our work, we analyse $5\times10^{4}$ single pulses from the recycled pulsar PSR J2222$-$0137 in one of its scintillation maxima observed by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). PSR J2222$-$0137 is one of the nearest and best studies of binary pulsars and a unique laboratory for testing gravitational theories. We report single pulses' energy distribution and polarization from the pulsar's main-pulse region. The single pulse energy follows the log-normal distribution. We resolve a steep polarization swing, but at the current time resolution ($64\,\mu{\rm s}$), we find no evidence for the orthogonal jump in the main-pulse region, as has been suspected. We find a potential sub-pulse drifting period of $P_{3} \sim 3.5\,P$. We analyse the jitter noise from different integrated numbers of pulses and find that its $\sigma_{j}$ is $270\pm{9}\,{\rm ns}$ for 1-hr integration at 1.25 GHz. Black widows are millisecond pulsars ablating their companions. The material blown from the companion blocks the radio emission, resulting in radio eclipses. The properties of the eclipse medium are poorly understood. Here, we present direct evidence of the existence of magnetic fields in the eclipse medium of the black widow PSR J2051$-$0827 using observations made with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). We detect a regular decrease in rotation measure (RM) in the egress of eclipse, changing from $60\,\rm rad\,m^{-2}$ to $-28.7\,\rm rad\,m^{-2}$. The RM gradually changes back to normal when the line-of-sight moves away from the eclipse. The estimated line-of-sight magnetic field strength in the eclipse medium is $\sim 0.1$ G. The RM reversal could be caused by a change of the magnetic field strength along the line of sight due to binary orbital motion. The RM reversal phenomenon has also been observed in some repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs), and the study of spider pulsars may provide additional information about the origin of FRBs., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accept for publication in ApJ

We extend the multi-reference covariant density functional theory (MR-CDFT) by including fluctuations in quadrupole deformations and average isovector pairing gaps simultaneously for the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of neutrinoless double-beta $(0\nu\beta\beta)$ decay in the candidate nuclei $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{100}$Mo, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe assuming the exchange of either light or heavy neutrinos. The results indicate a linear correlation between the predicted NMEs and the isovector pairing strengths, as well as the excitation energies of $2^{+}_1$ and $4^{+}_1$ states. By adjusting the pairing strengths based on the excitation energies of the $2^{+}_1$ states, we calculate the NMEs for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay, which are reduced by approximately $12\%$ to $62\%$ compared to the results obtained in the previous studies by Song et al. [Phys. Rev. C95, 024305 (2017)]. Additionally, upon introducing the average isovector pairing gap as an additional generator coordinate in the calculation, the NMEs increase by a factor ranging from $56\%$ to $218\%$., Comment: 11 pages with 4 tables and 8 figures

The uncertainty in the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay for $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{128}$Te, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe in the self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) method is investigated by using eighteen Skyrme interactions supplemented with either a volume- or surface-type of pairing interactions. The NMEs for the isotopes concerned (except $^{136}$Xe) are less sensitive to the particle-hole ($ph$) interactions, while strongly dependent on the employed isovector particle-particle ($pp$) pairing interactions even though the pairing strengths are optimized to the same pairing gap. The results indicate that a precise determination of the isovector $pp$ pairing interaction in the Skyrme energy density functional is of importance to reduce the uncertainty in the NMEs within the QRPA framework., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The beyond mean-field approach for low-lying hypernuclear states is extended by mixing the configurations associated with both single-particle and quadrupole-octupole collective excitations within the generator coordinate method based on a covariant density functional theory. The method is demonstrated in the application to the low-lying states of $^{21}_\Lambda$Ne, where the configurations with the $\Lambda$ hyperon occupying the first ($\Lambda_s$) and second ($\Lambda_p$) lowest-energy states are considered. The results indicate that the positive-parity states are dominated by the $\alpha+^{12}$C+$\alpha+\Lambda_s$ structure. In contrast, the low-lying negative-parity states are dominated by a strong admixture of $\alpha+^{16}$O+$\Lambda_s$ structure and $\alpha+^{12}$C+$\alpha+\Lambda_p$ structure due to the inclusion of octupole correlations. As a result, the low-lying negative-parity states become much lower than what is expected from the previous studies without the mixing, and the electric multipole transition strengths are significantly quenched., Comment: 9 pages with 5 figures and 2 tables

The generator coordinate method (GCM) is an important tool of choice for modeling large-amplitude collective motion in atomic nuclei. The computational complexity of the GCM increases rapidly with the number of collective coordinates. It imposes a strong restriction on the applicability of the method. In this work, we propose a subspace-reduction algorithm that employs optimal statistical ML models as surrogates for exact quantum-number projection calculations for norm and Hamiltonian kernels. The model space of the original GCM is reduced to a subspace relevant for nuclear low energy spectra and the NME of ground state to ground state $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay based on the orthogonality condition (OC) and the energy-transition-orthogonality procedure (ENTROP), respectively. For simplicity, the polynomial ridge regression (RR) algorithm is used to learn the norm and Hamiltonian kernels of axially deformed configurations. The efficiency and accuracy of this algorithm are illustrated for 76Ge and 76Se by comparing results obtained using the optimal RR models to direct GCM calculations. The low-lying energy spectra of $^{76}$Ge and $^{76}$Se, as well as the $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay NME between their ground states, are computed. The results show that the performance of the GCM+OC/ENTROP+RR is more robust than that of the GCM+RR alone, and the former can reproduce the results of the original GCM calculation accurately with a significantly reduced computational cost., Comment: 15 pages with 19 figures

We report the phase-connected timing ephemeris, polarization pulse profiles, Faraday rotation measurements, and Rotating-Vector-Model (RVM) fitting results of twelve millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in the Commensal radio Astronomy FAST survey (CRAFTS). The timing campaigns were carried out with FAST and Arecibo over three years. Eleven of the twelve pulsars are in neutron star - white dwarf binary systems, with orbital periods between 2.4 and 100 d. Ten of them have spin periods, companion masses, and orbital eccentricities that are consistent with the theoretical expectations for MSP - Helium white dwarf (He WD) systems. The last binary pulsar (PSR J1912$-$0952) has a significantly smaller spin frequency and a smaller companion mass, the latter could be caused by a low orbital inclination for the system. Its orbital period of 29 days is well within the range of orbital periods where some MSP - He WD systems have shown anomalous eccentricities, however, the eccentricity of PSR J1912$-$0952 is typical of what one finds for the remaining MSP - He WD systems., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS accepted

We use chiral interactions and several {\em ab initio} methods to compute the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for ground-state to ground-state double Gamow-Teller transitions in a range of isotopes, and explore the correlation of these NMEs with those for neutrinoless double beta decay produced by the exchange of a light Majorana neutrino. When all the NMEs of both isospin-conserving and isospin-changing transitions from the {\em ab initio} calculations are considered, the correlation is strong. For the experimentally relevant isospin-changing transitions by themselves, however, the correlation is weaker and may not be helpful for reducing the uncertainty in the NMEs for neutrinoless double-beta decay., Comment: 16 pages with 19 figures, Phys. The environment of actively repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been shown to be complex and varying. The recently localized FRB 20190520B is extremely active, has the largest confirmed host dispersion measure, and is only the second FRB source associated with a compact, persistent radio source (PRS). The main tracer of the magneto-ionic environments is the rotation measure (RM), a path-integral of the line-of-sight component of magnetic field strength (B) and electron density, which does not allow a direct probe of the B-field configuration. Here we report direct evidence for a B-field reversal based on the observed sign change and extreme variation of FRB 20190520B's RM, which changed from $\sim10000$ rad m$^{-2}$ to $\sim-16000$ rad m$^{-2}$ between June 2021 and January 2022. Such extreme RM reversal has never been observed before in any FRB nor in any astronomical object. The implied short-term change of the B-field configuration in or around the FRB could be due to the vicinity of massive black holes, or a magnetized companion star in binary systems, or a young supernova remnant along the line of sight., Comment: It was merged into arXiv:2202.11112. The repeating FRB 20190520B is localized to a galaxy at $z=0.241$, much closer than expected given its dispersion measure $\rm DM=1205\pm4\ pc\ cm^{-3}$. Here we assess implications of the large DM and scattering observed from FRB 20190520B for the host galaxy's plasma properties. A sample of 75 bursts detected with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope shows scattering on two scales: a mean temporal delay $\tau(1.41\ {\rm GHz})=10.9\pm1.5$ ms, which is attributed to the host galaxy, and a mean scintillation bandwidth $\nu_{\rm d}(1.41\ {\rm GHz})=0.21\pm0.01$ MHz, which is attributed to the Milky Way. Balmer line measurements for the host imply an H$\alpha$ emission measure (galaxy frame) $\rm EM_s=620$ pc cm$^{-6} \times (T/10^4 {\rm K})^{0.9}$, implying $\rm DM_{\rm H\alpha}$ of order the value inferred from the FRB DM budget, $\rm DM_h=1121^{+89}_{-138}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ for plasma temperatures greater than the typical value $10^4$ K. Combining $\tau$ and $\rm DM_h$ yields a nominal constraint on the scattering amplification from the host galaxy $\tilde{F} G=1.5^{+0.8}_{-0.3}$ (pc$^2$ km)$^{-1/3}$, where $\tilde{F}$ describes turbulent density fluctuations and $G$ represents the geometric leverage to scattering that depends on the location of the scattering material. For a two-screen scattering geometry where $\tau$ arises from the host galaxy and $\Delta \nu_{\rm d}$ from the Milky Way, the implied distance between the FRB source and dominant scattering material is $\lesssim100$ pc. The host galaxy scattering and DM contributions support a novel technique for estimating FRB redshifts using the $\tau-\rm DM$ relation, and are consistent with previous findings that scattering of localized FRBs is largely dominated by plasma within host galaxies and the Milky Way., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted to ApJ

Nuclear weak decays provide important probes to fundamental symmetries in nature. A precise description of these processes in atomic nuclei requires comprehensive knowledge on both the strong and weak interactions in the nuclear medium and on the dynamics of quantum many-body systems. In particular, an observation of the hypothetical double beta decay without emission of neutrinos ($0\nu\beta\beta$) would unambiguously demonstrate the Majorana nature of neutrinos and the existence of the lepton-number-violation process. It would also provide unique information on the ordering and absolute scale of neutrino masses. The next-generation tonne-scale experiments with sensitivity up to $10^{28}$ years after a few years of running will probably provide a definite answer to these fundamental questions based on our current knowledge on the nuclear matrix element (NME), the precise determination of which is a challenge to nuclear theory. Beyond-mean-field approaches have been frequently adapted for the study of nuclear structure and decay throughout the nuclear chart for several decades. In this review, we summarize the status of beyond-mean-field calculations of the NMEs of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay assuming the standard mechanism of an exchange of light Majorana neutrinos. We report on an {unusually} bright observation of PSR J1720$-$0533 using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The pulsar is in a black widow system that {was discovered by the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey (CRAFTS). By coincidence, a bright scintillation maximum was simultaneous with the eclipse in our observation which allowed for precise measurements of flux density variations, as well as dispersion measure (DM) and polarization.} We found that there are quasi-periodic pulse emission variations with a modulation period of $\sim$ {22\,s} during the ingress of the eclipse, which could be caused by plasma lensing. {No such periodic modulation was found during the egress of the eclipse. } {The linear polarization of the pulsar disappears before the eclipse, even before there is a visually obvious change in DM. The dispersive sweep of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been used to probe the ionized baryon content of the intergalactic medium, which is assumed to dominate the total extragalactic dispersion. While the host galaxy contributions to dispersion measure (DM) appear to be small for most FRBs, in at least one case there is evidence for an extreme magneto-ionic local environment and a compact persistent radio source. Here we report the detection and localization of the repeating FRB 20190520B, which is co-located with a compact, persistent radio source and associated with a dwarf host galaxy of high specific star formation rate at a redshift $z=0.241\pm0.001$. The estimated host galaxy DM $\approx 903^{+72}_{-111}$ pc cm$^{-3}$, nearly an order of magnitude higher than the average of FRB host galaxies, far exceeds the DM contribution of the intergalactic medium. Starting from chiral nuclear interactions, we evaluate the contribution of the leading-order contact transition operator to the nuclear matrix element (NME) of neutrinoless double-beta decay, assuming a light Majorana neutrino-exchange mechanism. The corresponding low-energy constant (LEC) is determined by fitting the transition amplitude of the $nn\to ppe^-e^-$ process to a recently proposed synthetic datum. We examine the dependence of the amplitude on similarity renormalization group (SRG) scale and chiral expansion order of the nuclear interaction, finding that both dependences can be compensated to a large extent by readjusting the LEC. We evaluate the contribution of both the leading-order contact operator and standard long-range operator to the neutrinoless double-beta decays in the light nuclei $^{6,8}$He and the candidate nucleus $^{48}$Ca. Our results provide the first clear demonstration that the contact term enhances the NME by 43(7)% in $^{48}$Ca, where the uncertainty is propagated from the synthetic datum., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The generator coordinate method begins with the variational construction of a set of non-orthogonal mean-field states that span a subspace of the full many-body Hilbert space. These states are then often projected onto states with good quantum numbers to restore symmetries, leading to a set with members that can be similar to one another, and it is sometimes possible to reduce this set without greatly affecting results. Here we propose a greedy algorithm that we call the energy-transition-orthogonality procedure (ENTROP) to select subsets of important states. As applied here, the approach selects on the basis of diagonal energy, orthogonality, and contribution to the matrix element that governs neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay. We present both shell-model and preliminary ab initio calculations of this matrix element for the decay of $^{76}$Ge, with quadrupole deformation parameters and the isoscalar pairing strength as generator coordinates. We present a detailed single-pulse analysis for PSR B1929+10 based on observations with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The main pulse and interpulse are found to be modulated with a periodicity of $\sim12$ times the pulsar's rotational period ($P$). The $\sim12P$ modulation is confirmed as a periodic amplitude modulation instead of systematic drifting. The periodic amplitude modulation in the IP is found to be anti-correlated with that in the weak preceding component of the MP (MP_I), but correlated with that in the first two components of the MP (MP_II), which implies that the modulation patterns in the IP and the MP are phase-locked. What is more interesting is that the modulation in MP_II is delayed that in the IP by about 1P. Furthermore, high sensitivity observations by FAST reveal that weak emission exists between the MP and the IP. In addition, we confirm that the separation between the IP and the MP is independent of radio frequency. The above results are a conundrum for pulsar theories and cannot be satisfactorily explained by the current pulsar models. Therefore, our results observed with FAST provide an opportunity to probe the structure of pulsar emission and the neutron star's magnetosphere., Comment: 13 pages 12 figures

We report ab initio benchmark calculations of nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decays in light nuclei with mass number ranging from $A=6$ to $A=22$. We use the transition operator derived from light-Majorana neutrino exchange and evaluate the NME with three different methods: two variants of in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) and importance-truncated no-core shell model (IT-NCSM). The same two-plus-three-nucleon interaction from chiral effective field theory is employed, and both isospin-conserving ($\Delta T=0$) and isospin-changing ($\Delta T=2$) transitions are studied. We compare our resulting ground-state energies and NMEs to those of recent ab initio no-core shell model and coupled-cluster calculations, also with the same inputs. We show that the NMEs of $\Delta T=0$ transitions are in good agreement among all calculations, at the level of 10%. For $\Delta T=2$, relative deviations are more significant in some nuclei. The comparison with the exact IT-NCSM result allows us to analyze these cases in detail, and indicates the next steps towards improving the IMSRG-based approaches. The present study clearly demonstrates the power of consistent cross-checks that are made possible by ab initio methodology. This capability is crucial for providing meaningful many-body uncertainties in the NMEs for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays in heavier candidate nuclei, where quasi-exact benchmarks are not available., Comment: 16 pages with 15 figures, PRC in press

Accurate nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless double beta decays of candidate nuclei are important for the design and interpretation of future experiments. Significant progress has been made in the modeling of these NMEs from first principles. The NME for 48Ca shows a good agreement among three different ab initio calculations starting from the same nuclear interaction constructed within the chiral EFT and the same decay operator. These studies open the door to ab initio calculations of the matrix elements for the decay of heavier nuclei such as 76Ge, 130Te, and 136Xe. The ultimate goal is the computation of NMEs in many-body calculations with controllable approximations, using nuclear interactions and weak transition operators derived consistently from chiral EFT. We compute nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double-beta decay mediated by light Majorana-neutrino exchange in the A = 6 system. The goal is to benchmark two many-body approaches, the No-Core Shell Model and the Multi-Reference In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group. We use the SRG-evolved chiral N3LO-EM500 potential for the nuclear interaction, and make the approximation that isospin is conserved. We compare the results of the two approaches as a function of the cutoff on the many-body basis space. Although differences are seen in the predicted nuclear radii, the ground-state energies and neutrinoless double-beta decay matrix elements produced by the two approaches show significant agreement. Working with Hamiltonians from chiral effective field theory, we develop a novel framework for describing arbitrary deformed medium-mass nuclei by combining the in-medium similarity renormalization group with the generator coordinate method. The approach leverages the ability of the first method to capture dynamic correlations and the second to include collective correlations without violating symmetries. We use our scheme to compute the matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{48}$Ca to $^{48}$Ti, and find it to have the value $0.61$, near or below the predictions of most phenomenological methods. We present a comprehensive study on the low-lying states of neutron-rich Er, Yb, Hf, and W isotopes across the $N=126$ shell with a multi-reference covariant density functional theory. Beyond mean-field effects from shape mixing and symmetry restoration on the observables that are relevant for understanding quadrupole collectivity and underlying shell structure are investigated. The general features of low-lying states in closed-shell nuclei are retained in these four isotopes around $N=126$, even though the shell gap is overall quenched by about 30\% with the beyond mean-field effects. These effects are consistent with the previous generator-coordinate calculations based on Gogny forces, but much smaller than that predicted by the collective Hamiltonian calculation. It implies that the beyond mean-field effects on the $r$-process abundances before the third peak at $A\sim195$ might be more moderate than that found in A. Arcones and G. F. Bertsch, Phys. Rev. We develop both relativistic mean field and beyond approaches for hypernuclei with possible quadrupole-octupole deformation or pear-like shapes based on relativistic point-coupling energy density functionals. The symmetries broken in the mean-field states are recovered with parity, particle-number, and angular momentum projections. We take $^{21}_\Lambda$Ne as an example to illustrate the method, where the $\Lambda$ hyperon is put on one of the two lowest-energy orbits (labeled as $\Lambda_s, \Lambda_p$), respectively. We find that the $\Lambda$ hyperon in both cases disfavors the formation of a reflection-asymmetric molecular-like $^{16}$O$+\alpha$ structure in $^{20}$Ne, which is consistent with the Nilsson diagram for the hyperon in $(\beta_2, \beta_3)$ deformation plane. In particular, we show that the negative-parity states with the configuration $^{20}$Ne($K^\pi=0^-)\otimes \Lambda_s$ are close in energy to those with the configuration $^{20}$Ne($K^\pi=0^+)\otimes \Lambda_p$, even though they have very different structures. We report the recent progress in relativistic mean-field (RMF) and beyond approaches for the low-energy structure of deformed hypernuclei. We show that the $\Lambda$ hyperon with orbital angular momentum $\ell=0$ (or $\ell>1$) generally reduces (enhances) nuclear quadrupole collectivity. The beyond mean-field studies of hypernuclear low-lying states demonstrate that there is generally a large configuration mixing between the two components $[^{A-1}Z (I^+) \otimes \Lambda p_{1/2}]^J$ and $[^{A-1}Z (I\pm2 ^+) \otimes \Lambda p_{3/2}]^J$ in the hypernuclear $1/2^-_1, 3/2^-_1$ states. The mixing weight increases as the collective correlation of nuclear core becomes stronger. Finally, we show how the energies of hypernuclear low-lying states are sensitive to parameters in the effective $N \Lambda $ interaction, the uncertainty of which has a large impact on the predicted maximal mass of neutron stars., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. We use a reference state based on symmetry-restored states from deformed mean-field or generator-coordinate-method (GCM) calculations in conjunction with the in-medium similarity-renormalization group (IMSRG) to compute spectra and matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay. Because the decay involves ground states from two nuclei, we use evolved operators from the IMSRG in one nucleus in a subsequent GCM calculation in the other. We benchmark the resulting IMSRG+GCM method against complete shell-model diagonalization for both the energies of low-lying states in $^{48}$Ca and $^{48}$Ti and the $0\nu\beta\beta$ matrix element for the decay of $^{48}$Ca, all in a single valence shell. Our approach produces better spectra than either the IMSRG with a spherical-mean-field reference or GCM calculations with unevolved operators. The previous mean-field calculation [Myaing Thi Win and K. Hagino, Phys. Rev. C{\bf 78}, 054311 (2008)] has shown that the oblate deformation in $^{28,30,32}$Si disappears when a $\Lambda$ particle is added to these nuclei. We here investigate this phenomenon by taking into account the effects beyond the mean-field approximation. To this end, we employ the microscopic particle-rotor model based on the covariant density functional theory. We show that the deformation of $^{30}$Si does not completely disappear, even though it is somewhat reduced, after a $\Lambda$ particle is added if the beyond-mean-field effect is taken into account. We also discuss the impurity effect of $\Lambda$ particle on the electric quadrupole transition, and show that an addition of a $\Lambda$ particle leads to a reduction in the $B(E2)$ value, as a consequence of the reduction in the deformation parameter., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We perform a coupled-channels study of the low-lying states in $^{13,15,17,19}_{~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\Lambda}$C with a covariant energy density functional based microscopic particle-core coupling model. The energy differences of $1/2^-$ and $3/2^-$ states in $^{13}_\Lambda$C and $^{15}_\Lambda$C are predicted to be 0.25 MeV and 0.34 MeV, respectively. We find that configuration mixings in the $1/2^-$ and $3/2^-$ states of $^{15}_\Lambda$C are the weakest among those of $^{13,15,17,19}_{~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\Lambda}$C. The fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock (HF) plus random phase approximation (RPA) based on Skyrme-type interaction is used to study the existence problem of proton semi-bubble structure in the $2_1^+$ state of $^{34}$Si. The experimental excitation energy and the B(E2) strength of the $2_1^+$ state in $^{34}$Si can be reproduced quite well. The tensor effect is also studied. It is shown that the tensor interaction has a notable impact on the excitation energy of the $2_1^+$ state and a small effect on the B(E2) value. Besides, its effect on the density distributions in the ground and $2_1^+$ state of $^{34}$Si is negligible. Our present results with T36 and T44 show that the $2_1^+$ state of $^{34}$Si is mainly caused by proton transiton from $\pi 1d_{5/2}$ orbit to $\pi 2s_{1/2}$ orbit, and the existence of a proton semi-bubble structure in this state is very unlikely., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

In order to clarify the nature of hypernuclear low-lying states, we carry out a comprehensive study for the structure of $^{144-154}_{~~~~~~~~\Lambda}$Sm-hypernuclei, which exhibit a transition from vibrational to rotational characters as the neutron number increases. To this end, we employ a microscopic particle-core coupling scheme based on a covariant density functional theory. We find that the positive-parity ground-state band in the hypernuclei shares a similar structure to that of the corresponding core nucleus. That is, regardless of whether the core nucleus is spherical or deformed, each hypernuclear state is dominated by the single configuration of the $\Lambda$ particle in the $s_{1/2}$ state ($\Lambda s_{1/2}$) coupled to one core state of the ground band. In contrast, the low-lying negative-parity states mainly consist of $\Lambda p_{1/2}$ and $\Lambda p_{3/2}$ configurations coupled to plural nuclear core states. We show that, while the mixing amplitude between these configurations is negligibly small in spherical and weakly-deformed nuclei, it strongly increases as the core nucleus undergoes a transition to a well-deformed shape, being consistent with the Nilsson wave functions. We demonstrate that the structure of these negative-parity states with spin $I$ can be well understood based on the $LS$ coupling scheme, with the total orbital angular momentum of $L=[I\otimes 1]$ and the spin angular momentum of $S=1/2$., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures and 3 tables

We derive the Sun's offset from the local mean Galactic plane($z_\odot$) using the observed $z$ distribution of young pulsars. Pulsar distances are obtained from measurements of annual parallax, HI absorption spectra or associations where available and otherwise from the observed pulsar dispersion and a model for the distribution of free electrons in the Galaxy. We fit the cumulative distribution function for a ${\rm sech}^2(z)$ distribution function, representing an isothermal self-gravitating disk, with uncertainties being estimated using the bootstrap method. We take pulsars having characteristic age $\tau_c<10^{6.5}$~yr and located within 4.5~kpc of the Sun, omitting those within the local spiral arm and those significantly affected by the Galactic warp, and solve for $z_\odot$ and the scale height, $H$, for different cutoffs in $\tau_c$. We compute these quantities using just the independently determined distances, and these together with DM-based distances separately using the YMW16 and NE2001 Galactic electron density models. We find that an age cutoff at $10^{5.75}$~yr with YMW16 DM-distances gives the best results with a minimum uncertainty in $z_\odot$ and an asymptotically stable value for $H$ showing that, at this age and below, the observed pulsar $z$-distribution is dominated by the dispersion in their birth locations. From this sample of 115 pulsars, we obtain $z_\odot=13.4\pm$4.4~pc and $H=56.9\pm$6.5~pc, similar to estimated scale heights for OB stars and open clusters. [Background] The hyperon impurity effect in nuclei has been extensively studied in different mean-field models. Recently, there is a controversy about whether the $\Lambda$ hyperon is more tightly bound in the normal deformed (ND) states than that in the superdeformed (SD) states.[Purpose] This article is aimed to provide a beyond-mean-field study of the low-lying states of hypernuclei with shape coexistence and to shed some light on the controversy.[Method] The models of relativistic mean-field and beyond based on a relativistic point-coupling energy functional are adopted to study the low-lying states of both $^{37}_\Lambda$Ar and $^{36}$Ar. The wavefunctions of low-lying states are constructed as a superposition of a set of relativistic mean-field states with different values of quadrupole deformation parameter. The projections onto both particle number and angular momentum are considered.[Results] The $\Lambda$ binding energies in both ND and SD states of $^{37}_{\Lambda}$Ar are studied in the case of the $\Lambda$ hyperon occupying $s, p$, or $d$ state in the spherical limit, respectively. For comparison, four sets of nucleon-hyperon point-coupling interactions are used respectively. Moreover, the spectra of low-lying states in $^{36}$Ar and $^{37}_{\Lambda_s}$Ar are calculated based on the same nuclear energy density functional. The results indicate that the SD states exist in $^{37}_{\Lambda}$Ar for all the four effective interactions. Furthermore, the $\Lambda_s$ reduces the quadrupole collectivity of ND states to a greater extent than that of SD states. For $^{37}_{\Lambda}$Ar, the beyond-mean-field decreases the $\Lambda_s$ binding energy of the SD state by 0.17 MeV, but it almost has no effect on that of the ND state. Background: The discovery of neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay would demonstrate the nature of neutrinos, have profound implications for our understanding of matter-antimatter mystery, and solve the mass hierarchy problem of neutrinos. The calculations for the nuclear matrix elements $M^{0\nu}$ of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay are crucial for the interpretation of this process. Purpose: We study the effects of relativity and nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations on the nuclear matrix elements $M^{0\nu}$ by assuming the mechanism of exchanging light or heavy neutrinos for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay. Methods: The nuclear matrix elements $M^{0\nu}$ are calculated within the framework of covariant density functional theory, where the beyond-mean-field correlations are included in the nuclear wave functions by configuration mixing of both angular-momentum and particle-number projected quadrupole deformed mean-field states. Results: The nuclear matrix elements $M^{0\nu}$ are obtained for ten $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay candidate nuclei. The impact of relativity is illustrated by adopting relativistic or nonrelativistic decay operators. The effects of short-range correlations are evaluated. Conclusions: The effects of relativity and short-range correlations play an important role in the mechanism of exchanging heavy neutrinos though the influences are marginal for light neutrinos. Combining the nuclear matrix elements $M^{0\nu}$ with the observed lower limits on the $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay half-lives, the predicted strongest limits on the effective masses are $|\langle m_\nu\rangle|<0.06~\mathrm{eV}$ for light neutrinos and $|\langle m_{\nu_h}^{-1}\rangle|^{-1}>3.065\times 10^8~\mathrm{GeV}$ for heavy neutrinos., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

We present a new model for the distribution of free electrons in the Galaxy, the Magellanic Clouds and the intergalactic medium (IGM) that can be used to estimate distances to real or simulated pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs) based on their dispersion measure (DM). The Galactic model has an extended thick disk representing the so-called warm interstellar medium, a thin disk representing the Galactic molecular ring, spiral arms based on a recent fit to Galactic HII regions, a Galactic Center disk and seven local features including the Gum Nebula, Galactic Loop I and the Local Bubble. An offset of the Sun from the Galactic plane and a warp of the outer Galactic disk are included in the model. Parameters of the Galactic model are determined by fitting to 189 pulsars with independently determined distances and DMs. Simple models are used for the Magellanic Clouds and the IGM. Galactic model distances are within the uncertainty range for 86 of the 189 independently determined distances and within 20\% of the nearest limit for a further 38 pulsars. We estimate that 95\% of predicted Galactic pulsar distances will have a relative error of less than a factor of 0.9. The predictions of YMW16 are compared to those of the TC93 and NE2001 models showing that YMW16 performs significantly better on all measures. We discuss anharmonicity of the multi-octupole-phonon states in $^{208}$Pb based on a covariant density functional theory, by fully taking into account the interplay between the quadrupole and the octupole degrees of freedom. Our results indicate the existence of a large anharmonicity in the transition strengths, even though the excitation energies are similar to those in the harmonic limit. We also show that the quadrupole-shape fluctuation significantly enhances the fragmentation of the two-octupole-phonon states in $^{208}$Pb. Using those transition strengths as inputs to coupled channels calculations, we then discuss the fusion reaction of $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier. We show that the anharmonicity of the octupole vibrational excitation considerably improves previous coupled-channels calculations in the harmonic oscillator limit, significantly reducing the height of the main peak in the fusion barrier distribution., Comment: 5 pages with 4 figures, to be published in Phys. We present a generator-coordinate calculation, based on a relativistic energy-density functional, of the low-lying spectra in the isotopes $^{150}$Nd and $^{150}$Sm and of the nuclear matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double-beta decay of the first isotope to the second. We carefully examine the impact of octupole correlations on both nuclear structure and the double-beta decay matrix element. Octupole correlations turn out to reduce quadrupole collectivity in both nuclei. Shape fluctuations, however, dilute the effects of octupole deformation on the double-beta decay matrix element, so that the overall octupole-induced quenching is only about 7\%., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. We extend the microscopic particle-rotor model for hypernuclear low-lying states by including the derivative and tensor coupling terms in the point-coupling nucleon-$\Lambda$ particle ($N\Lambda$) interaction. Taking $^{13}_{~\Lambda}$C as an example, we show that a good overall description for excitation spectra is achieved with four sets of effective $N\Lambda$ interaction. We find that the $\Lambda$ hyperon binding energy decreases monotonically with increasing the strengths of the high-order interaction terms. In particular, the tensor coupling term decreases the energy splitting between the first $1/2^-$ and $3/2^-$ states and increases the energy splitting between the first $3/2^+$ and $5/2^+$ states in $^{13}_{~\Lambda}$C., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The nuclear fusion is a reaction to form a compound nucleus. It plays an important role in several circumstances in nuclear physics as well as in nuclear astrophysics, such as synthesis of superheavy elements and nucleosynthesis in stars. Here we discuss two recent theoretical developments in heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The first topic is a generalization of the Wong formula for fusion cross sections in a single-channel problem. By introducing an energy dependence to the barrier parameters, we show that the generalized formula leads to results practically indistinguishable from a full quantal calculation, even for light symmetric systems such as $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C, for which fusion cross sections show an oscillatory behavior. We then discuss a semi-microscopic modeling of heavy-ion fusion reactions, which combine the coupled-channels approach to the state-of-the-art nuclear structure calculations for low-lying collective motions. We apply this method to subbarrier fusion reactions of $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni and $^{40}$Ca+$^{58}$Ni systems, and discuss the role of anharmonicity of the low-lying vibrational motions., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures.
