Purpose Three‐level hybrid surgery (HS) consisting of cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has been partly used for the treatment of multi‐level cervical degenerative disc disease (CDDD). The complications related to the implants and the collapse of the surgical vertebral bodies had been reported in multi‐level anterior cervical spine surgery. Thus, this study aimed to explore the biomechanical effects on the prostheses and vertebrae in three‐level HS. Methods A FE model of cervical spine (C0‐T1) was constructed. Five surgical models were developed. They were FAF model (ACDF‐CDA‐ACDF), AFA model (CDA‐ACDF‐CDA), FFF model (three‐level ACDF), SF model (single‐level ACDF), and SA model (single‐level CDA). A 75‐N follower load and 1.0‐N·m moment was applied to produce flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation. Results Compared with the intact model, the range of motion (ROM) of total cervical spine in FAF model decreased by 34.54%, 54.48%, 31.76%, and 27.14%, respectively, in flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, which were lower than those in FFF model and higher than those in AFA model. The ROMs of CDA segments in FAF and AFA models were similar to the intact model and SA model. Compared with the intact model, the ROMs at C3/4 segment in FFF model increased from 5.71% to 7.85%, and increased from 5.31% to 6.81% at C7/T1 segment, following by FAF model, then the FAF model. The maximum interface pressures of the Prestige‐LP in FAF model were similar to SA model, however the corresponding values were increased in AFA model. The maximum interface pressures of the Zero‐P were increased in FAF and AFA model compared with those in SF and FFF models. The stress was mainly distributed on the screws. In AFA model, the maximum pressures of the ball and trough articulation in superior and inferior Prestige‐LP were all increased compared with those in SA and FAF model. In FFF model, the maximum pressures of the vertebrae were higher than those in other models. The stress was mainly distributed on the anterior area of the vertebral bodies. Conclusions HS seemed to be more suitable than ACDF for the surgical treatment of three‐level CDDD in consideration of the biomechanical effects, especially for the two‐level CDA and one‐level ACDF construct. But a more appropriate CDA prosthesis should be explored in the future.

Abstract Objective To investigate (1) lateral atlantoaxial articulation (LAA) morphology in patients with basilar invagination (BI) with atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) and healthy individuals and its relationship with the severity of dislocation and (2) the effect of the LAA morphology on reduction degree (RD) after surgery. Methods In this retrospective propensity score matching case-control study, imaging and baseline data of 62 patients with BI and AAD from 2011 to 2022 were collected. Six hundred thirteen participants without occipitocervical junctional deformity served as controls. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used for analysis. Results The age, BMI and sex did not differ significantly between the two groups after propensity score matching. Sagittal slope angle (SSA) and coronal slope angle (CSA) was lower and greater, respectively, in the patient group than in the control group. A negative SSA value usually indicates anteverted LAA. Regression analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between SSA and severity of dislocation. However, no relationship was found between CSA and the severity of dislocation. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that minimum-SSA emerged as an independent predictor of satisfactory reduction (RD ≥ 90%). The ROC curve demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.844, with a cut-off value set at -40.2. Conclusion SSA in patients group was significantly smaller and more asymmetric than that in the control group. Dislocation severity was related to SSA but not to CSA. Minimum-SSA can be used as a predictor of horizontal RD after surgery.

Abstract Currently, a comprehensive assessment of the relationship between ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) indicators and cataract risk is lacking. Life’s Essential 8 (LE8) is the latest concept proposed by the American Heart Association to comprehensively reflect CVH status. LE8 includes four health behaviors (diet, physical activity, smoking, and sleep) and four health factors (blood lipid, blood sugar, blood pressure, and body mass index). This study tried to evaluate the association between LE8 and cataract using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2008, a continuous research program which aims to monitor and evaluate the health and nutrition status of the US population. A cross-sectional study of 2720 non-cataract participants and 602 cataract participants. All participants were assigned to the poor, intermediate, and ideal CVH status groups based on LE8 score. Weighted multiple logistic regression was used to investigate the correlation between the LE8 score and cataract, as well as the correlation between each of the eight subitems and cataract, with potential confounding variables being adjusted. Then, restricted cubic spline analysis was used to further explore whether there was a nonlinear relationship between LE8 score and cataract. Highlights An innovative class of versatile form-stable composite phase change materials (CPCMs) was fruitfully exploited, featuring MXene/phytic acid hybrid depositing on non-carbonized wood as a robust support. The wood-based CPCMs showcase enhanced thermal conductivity of 0.82 W m−1 K−1 (4.6 times than polyethylene glycol) as well as high latent heat of 135.5 kJ kg−1 (91.5% encapsulation) with thermal durability and stability throughout at least 200 heating and cooling cycles. The wood-based CPCMs have good solar-thermal-electricity conversion, flame-retardant, and electromagnetic shielding properties.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are severe complications of pregnancy with high morbidity and are a major cause of increased maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Currently, there is a lack of effective early diagnostic indicators and safe and effective preventive strategies for HDP in clinical practice, except for monitoring maternal blood pressure levels, the degree of proteinuria, organ involvement and fetal conditions. The intestinal microbiota consists of the gut flora and intestinal environment, which is the largest microecosystem of the human body and participates in material and energy metabolism, gene expression regulation, immunity regulation, and other functions. During pregnancy, due to changes in hormone levels and altered immune function, the intestinal microecological balance is affected, triggering HDP. A dysregulated intestinal microenvironment influences the composition and distribution of the gut flora and changes the intestinal barrier, driving beneficial or harmful bacterial metabolites and inflammatory responses to participate in the development of HDP and promote its malignant development. When the gut flora is dysbiotic and affects blood pressure, supplementation with probiotics and dietary fiber can be used to intervene. In this review, the interaction between the intestinal microbiota and HDP was investigated to explore the feasibility of the gut flora as a novel biomarker of HDP and to provide a new strategy and basis for the prevention and treatment of clinical HDP.

ABSTRACT The underlying mechanism of thermotolerance, which is a key virulence factor essential for pathogenic fungi such as Cryptococcus neoformans, is largely unexplored. In this study, our findings suggest that Set302, a homolog of Set3 and a subunit of histone deacetylase complex Set3C, contributes to thermotolerance in C. neoformans. Specifically, the deletion of the predicted Set3C core subunit, Set302, resulted in further reduction in the growth of C. neoformans at 39°C, and survival of transient incubation at 50°C. Transcriptomics analysis revealed that the expression levels of numerous heat stress-responsive genes altered at both 30°C and 39°C due to the lack of Set302. Notably, at 39°C, the absence of Set302 led to the downregulation of gene expression related to the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). Based on the GFP-α-synuclein overexpression model to characterize misfolded proteins, we observed a pronounced accumulation of misfolded GFP-α-synuclein at 39°C, consequently inhibiting C. neoformans thermotolerance. Furthermore, the loss of Set302 exacerbated the accumulation of misfolded GFP-α-synuclein during heat stress. Interestingly, the set302∆ strain exhibited a similar phenotype under proteasome stress as it did at 39°C. Moreover, the absence of Set302 led to reduced production of capsule and melanin. set302∆ strain also displayed significantly reduced pathogenicity and colonization ability compared to the wild-type strain in the murine infection model. Collectively, our findings suggest that Set302 modulates thermotolerance by affecting the degradation of misfolded proteins and multiple virulence factors to mediate the pathogenicity of C. neoformans.IMPORTANCECryptococcus neoformans is a pathogenic fungus that poses a potential and significant threat to public health. Thermotolerance plays a crucial role in the wide distribution in natural environments and host colonization of this fungus. Herein, Set302, a critical core subunit for the integrity of histone deacetylase complex Set3C and widely distributed in various fungi and mammals, governs thermotolerance and affects survival at extreme temperatures as well as the formation of capsule and melanin in C. neoformans. Additionally, Set302 participates in regulating the expression of multiple genes associated with the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). By eliminating misfolded proteins under heat stress, Set302 significantly contributes to the thermotolerance of C. neoformans. Moreover, Set302 regulates the pathogenicity and colonization ability of C. neoformans in a murine model. Overall, this study provides new insight into the mechanism of thermotolerance in C. neoformans.

Objective This study aimed to compare the effects of patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) with and without low-basal infusion on postoperative hypoxaemia.Design A randomised parallel-group non-inferiority trial.Setting The trial was conducted at a grade-A tertiary hospital from December 2021 to August 2022.Participants 160 adults undergoing gastrointestinal tumour surgery and receiving postoperative PCIA.Interventions Participants randomly received a low-basal (0.1 mg/hour of hydromorphone) or no-basal infusion PCIA for postoperative 48 hours.Primary and secondary outcome measures Primary outcome was area under curve (AUC) per hour for hypoxaemia, defined as pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2)

Abstract Color is one of the most important indicators for the flue-cured tobacco quality. The color change of tobacco has a great relationship with the natural pigments in the tobacco. The relationship between color characteristics and the content of natural pigments in tobacco leaves during curing was investigated. The middle part of variety K326 tobacco was taken at each key time point during the curing process to determine the changes of color characteristics, moisture, pigment and polyphenol content. The results showed that moisture content of wet basis of tobacco gradually decreased from 72 to 18% during the curing process, the b* value increased and then decreased, and the a* value increased significantly. The lutein and β-carotene content decreased to 63.83 μg/g and 28.3 μg/g, respectively. The total polyphenols content increased to 50.19 mg/g. Meanwhile, the a* value was significantly and positively correlated with polyphenols content and negatively correlated with pigments content. Cluster analysis showed that the samples were divided into three categories: samples with the curing time of 0 h, 24–72 h, and 84–132 h. These results demonstrated that the color change of tobacco during curing process can be divided into three stages from the perspective of chemical composition, which are strongly related to the degradation of pigments and the transformation of polyphenols.

Passive daytime radiative cooling that could provide sub-ambient cooling emerges as a promising technology to reduce household energy consumption. Nonetheless, prevailing studies are predominantly focused on surface cooling, often overlooking its adaptability to enclosed spaces with active cooling technologies. Here we present a multilayer radiative cooling film (J-MRC) with Janus optical properties in the mid-infrared region, consisting of the nanoporous polyethylene films, the polyethylene oxide film, and silver nanowires. The top side of the J-MRC functions as a conventional radiative cooling material to supply sub-ambient surface cooling, while the bottom side with low mid-infrared emissivity transfers limited heat via thermal radiation to the low-temperature enclosures. Our experiments validate that the J-MRC possesses an enhanced space cooling performance in comparison to the conventional radiative cooling film. This work provides a valuable design concept for radiative cooling materials, thereby expanding their practical scenarios and contributing to reduce the carbon emission.

In this study, a novel composite was engineered by integrating Zr-MOF (NH2-UIO-66) with MXene layers through electrostatic self-assembly. Under simulated sunlight and at 80 °C, this composite material achieved nearly complete conversion of low-concentration atmospheric CO2 to CO and CH4 without additional sacrificial agents or alkaline absorption liquids, marking one of the few reports demonstrating near-complete reduction of low-concentration CO2 directly from the air. For high-concentration CO2 in industrial flue gas, the composite utilized residual heat at 80 °C without additional energy input, exhibiting excellent CO2 reduction efficiency with CO and CH4 production rates of 127 μmol·g-1·h-1 and 330 μmol·g-1·h-1, respectively, resulting in a total production rate 4.76 times higher than that in the air. Compared to most reports on thermocatalytic CO2 reduction (>300 °C), this material shows significant advantages below 100 °C. The performance improvement is attributed to the introduction of Zr-MOF, which provides additional active sites and reduces activation energy. Additionally, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of MXene facilitates the migration of thermal charge carriers to Zr4+ sites within the MOF. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations validate these findings. Overall, Zr-MOF/MXene composite holds potential for reducing CO2 in air and industrial settings, advancing energy conversion and environmental management.

Ultra-high performance concrete prepared by calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSAC-UHPC) possesses promising applications because of its excellent early strength, durability and environmental benefits. However, the impacts of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), an important components for UHPC, on the properties of CSAC-UHPC remain ambiguous in international research. To well complement this subject, effects of three ultra-fine SCMs, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), limestone powder (LP) and silica fume (SF), on the properties of CSAC-UHPC were investigated, including flowability, setting time, hydration process, microstructure and mechanical strength. Results showed that the flowability of CSAC-UHPC increased with the GGBFS and LP content increasing, respectively, and decreased with the SF content increasing. Meanwhile, the addition of GGBFS, LP and SF had a limited regulation of the setting time, with the initial and final setting time between separately 13—26 min and 19—35 min, but it inhibited the hydration of CSAC-UHPC and reduced the total amount of hydration products, among which the effect was most pronounced by SF. Moreover, the replacement to cement with 10 % mass fraction of GGBFS, LP and SF, individually, could refine the pore structure of CSAC-UHPC, and further increasing the replacement rate was detrimental to the development of micromorphology. The content of GGBFS and LP should not exceed 10 % without compromising the mechanical strength of CSAC-UHPC, while SF was not suitable for addition. The flexural strength at 4 h of CSAC-UHPC with 10 % GGBFS and LP reached 8.1 MPa and 7.9 MPa, and the compressive strength at 4 h reached 49.4 MPa and 48.1 MPa, respectively. Also, they have a carbon footprint reduction of approximately 25—40 % and an embodied energy reduction of approximately 25—35 %, compared to ordinary UHPC.

Abstract Hydrogen storage in MgH2 is an ideal solution for realizing the safe storage of hydrogen. High operating temperature, however, is required for hydrogen storage of MgH2 induced by high thermodynamic stability and kinetic barrier. Herein, flower‐like microspheres uniformly constructed by N‐doped TiO2 nanosheets coated with TiN nanoparticles are fabricated to integrate the light absorber and thermo‐chemical catalysts at a nanometer scale for driving hydrogen storage of MgH2 using solar energy. N‐doped TiO2 is in situ transformed into TiNxOy and Ti/TiH2 uniformly distributed inside of TiN matrix during cycling, in which TiN and Ti/TiHx pairs serve as light absorbers that exhibit strong localized surface plasmon resonance effect with full‐spectrum light absorbance capability. On the other hand, it is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the intimate interface between TiH2 and MgH2 can not only thermodynamically and kinetically promote H2 desorption from MgH2 but also simultaneously weaken Ti─H bonds and hence in turn improve H2 desorption from the combination of weakened Ti─H and Ti─H bonds. The uniform integration of photothermal and catalytic effect leads to the direct action of localized heat generated from TiN on initiating the catalytic effect in realizing hydrogen storage of MgH2 with a capacity of 6.1 wt.% under 27 sun.

The direct conversion of atmospheric CO2 into fuel via photocatalysis exhibits significant practical application value in advancing the carbon cycle. In this study, we established an electro-assisted photocatalytic system with dual compartments and interfaces, and coated Ag nanoparticles on the titanium nanotube arrays (TNTAs) by polydopamine modification. In the absence of sacrificial agent and alkali absorption liquid conditions, the stable, efficient and highly selective conversion of CO2 to CO at the gas-solid interface in ambient air was realized by photoelectric synergy. Specifically, with the assistance of potential, the CO formation rates reached 194.9 μmol h−1 m−2 and 103.9 μmol h−1 m−2 under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation, respectively; the corresponding CO2 conversion rates in ambient air were 30% and 16%, respectively. The excellent catalytic effect is mainly attributed to the formation of P–N heterojunction during the catalytic process and the surface plasmon resonance effect. Additionally, the introduction of solid agar electrolytes effectively inhibits the hydrogen evolution reaction and improves the electron utilization rate. This system promotes the development of photocatalytic technology for practical applications and provides new insights and support for the carbon cycle.

Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) shows significant spatial and temporal variability in the context of global climate change, which is important for studying the implications of climate change on the structure and function of ecosystems to analyze the effects of VPD on vegetation dynamics. Spatial patterns of vegetation sensitivity to VPD have been recently investigated, however, the feedback of different vegetation types to VPD may vary depending on physiological characteristics, it is unclear how different types influence the sensitivity to VPD. In this study, the ERA5-Land reanalysis time-series dataset was used to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of VPD under different vegetation types. It was found that VPD showed an increasing trend in vegetated areas over the past 20 years with large spatial heterogeneity, generally increasing with drying conditions. On this basis, the spatial patterns of vegetation sensitivity to VPD and temporal trends in sensitivity were evaluated over the past 20 years in China using the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and near-infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIRv) which can describe vegetation dynamics. The results show that the sensitivities under the two indices have high spatial consistency, with northeastern and central China showing positive sensitivities and southern China showing negative sensitivities, respectively. The positive sensitivities are relatively high for Deciduous Broadleaf Forests (DBF), Deciduous Needleleaf Forests (DNF), Grasslands (GL), and Croplands (CL) types, while the negative sensitivities are larger for Shrublands (SL) and Savannas (SA) types. Under different climatic zones, the sensitivity of CL and GL are independent of climatic zones (both showing positive), while the sensitivity of SL is negative in the Humid zone and positive in the Semi-Arid zone. The construction of modern power system is key to achieving dual carbon goals, where non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) plays a vital role in enhancing energy utilization efficiency and energy management. For example, to enable prosumers to better understand the extent of their flexible loads for demand response and peer-to-peer trading, it is essential to be aware of the types and states of loads using the method of NILM. To improve the predictive accuracy and implementation effectiveness of NILM technology, this paper proposes a novel NILM method integrating meteorological and calendar features. It delves deeply into the close connection between external factors such as temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and holidays, and the energy consumption of electrical appliances, constructing additional associative mappings in the training of the Denoising Autoencoder (DAE) model. Test results on the UK-DALE public dataset show that the NILM method proposed in this paper has significant advantages over traditional NILM methods that consider only single-dimensional electrical data features, in terms of load pattern recognition and accuracy in load energy consumption monitoring. This confirms the potential of multi-dimensional feature fusion technology in the application of NILM.

Objective Cervical alignment is a crucial factor related to the success of anterior cervical surgical procedures. In patients with severe spinal cord compression, a traditional neck pillow (TNP) may not adequately correct cervical position during surgery. Therefore, the aim of this study was to introduce this innovative intraoperative posture‐adjustment apparatus (IPAA), and explored its clinical and radiological results in cervical angle correction against TNP in patients who had undergone anterior cervical surgery. Methods The clinical and radiological data of 86 patients who underwent anterior cervical surgery with a minimum follow‐up period of 1 year were retrospectively reviewed. Of these, 58 patients underwent IPAA, whereas 28 underwent TNP. Radiological parameters such as the degree of C2‐C7 lordosis (CL), functional spinal unit angle (FSUA), C7 slope (C7S), fusion rate, and adjacent segment disease (ASD) were recorded and compared between the groups. Clinical outcomes including the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA), neck disability index (NDI), visual analogue scale (VAS) for neck and arm were recorded. Complications such as kyphosis, dysphagia, Braden Scale score, revision surgery, hematoma, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, wound infection, and deep venous thrombosis were also recorded. The independent t‐test or Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare continuous data, and categorical variables were assessed using the Pearson's chi‐square test or Fisher's exact test. Results Compared with the pre‐operative data, the post‐operative CL, FSUA, and C7S were significantly increased in both groups. Abstract Light is a powerful and sustainable resource, but it can be detrimental to the performance and longevity of optical devices. Materials with near-zero light reflectance, i.e. superblack materials, are sought to improve the performance of several light-centered technologies. Here we report a simple top-down strategy, guided by computational methods, to develop robust superblack materials following metal-free wood delignification and carbonization (1500 °C). Subwavelength severed cells evolve under shrinkage stresses, yielding vertically aligned carbon microfiber arrays with a thickness of ~100 µm and light reflectance as low as 0.36% and independent of the incidence angle. The formation of such structures is rationalized based on delignification method, lignin content, carbonization temperature and wood density. Moreover, our measurements indicate a laser beam reflectivity lower than commercial light stoppers in current use. Overall, the wood-based superblack material is introduced as a mechanically robust surrogate for microfabricated carbon nanotube arrays.

Abstract This study explored the possible hemodynamic changes of the retina and choroid after horizontal strabismus surgery using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). 32 eyes of 32 patients who underwent unilateral horizontal rectus muscle recession–resection surgery were included. SS-OCTA examinations were performed preoperatively and one week postoperatively. Several OCTA measurements were used, including vessel density (VD) of the superficial vascular complex (SVC), VD of the deep vascular complex (DVC), VD of the choriocapillaris (CC), choroidal vascular index (CVI) and choroidal thickness (CT). No significant change in VD of SVC, DVC, and CC was observed whereas CT increased significantly with CVI unchanged. Recession–resection surgery for horizontal strabismus seemed not to significantly influence the microcirculation of the retina and CC in the early postoperative period. However, choroidal thickening happened with a constant CVI probably due to the postoperative inflammation. Further studies are needed to investigate the long-term effects of unilateral recession–resection surgery for horizontal strabismus on the microcirculation of the retina and choroid.

Objective Although high fusion rates have been reported for anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) in the medium and long term, the risk of nonfusion in the early period after ACDF remains substantial. This study investigates early risk factors for cage nonfusion in patients undergoing single‐ or multi‐level ACDF. Methods This was a retrospective study. From August 2020 to December 2021, 107 patients with ACDF, including 197 segments, were enrolled, with a follow‐up of 3 months. Among the 197 segments, 155 were diagnosed with nonfusion (Nonfusion group), and 42 were diagnosed with fusion (Fusion group) in the early period after ACDF. We assessed the significance of the patient‐specific factors, radiographic indicators, serum factors, and clinical outcomes. The Wilcoxon rank sum test, t‐tests, analysis of variance, and stepwise multivariate logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. Results Univariate analysis showed that smoking, insufficient improvement in the C2‐7 Cobb angle (p = 0.024) and the functional spinal unit Cobb angle (p = 0.022) between preoperative and postoperative stages and lower serum calcium (fusion: 2.34 ± 0.12 mmol/L; nonfusion: 2.28 ± 0.17 mmol/L, p = 0.003) β‐carboxyterminal telopeptide end of type 1 collagen (β‐CTX) (fusion: 0.51 [0.38, 0.71]; nonfusion: 0.43 [0.31, 0.57], p = 0.008), and N‐terminal fragment of osteocalcin (N‐MID‐BGP) (fusion: 18.30 [12.15, 22.60]; nonfusion: 14.45 [11.65, 18.60], p = 0.023) are risk factors for nonfusion in the early period after ACDF. Stepwise logistic regression analysis revealed that poor C2‐7 Cobb angle improvement (odds ratio [OR], 1.107 [1.019–1.204], p = 0.017) and lower serum calcium (OR, 3.700 [1.138–12.032], p = 0.030) are risk factors. Conclusions Patients with successful fusion after ACDF had higher preoperative serum calcium and improved C2‐7 Cobb angle than nonfusion patients at 3 months. These findings suggest that serum calcium could be used to identify patients at risk of nonfusion following ACDF and that correcting the C2‐7 Cobb angle during surgery could potentially increase fusion in the early period after ACDF.

Growing evidence has demonstrated that peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures (PHOMS) are novel structures rather than a subtype of optic disc drusen. They correspond to the laterally bulging herniation of optic nerve fibers and are believed to be the marker of axoplasmic stasis. PHOMS present in a broad spectrum of diseases, including optic disc drusen, tilted disc syndrome, papilloedema, multiple sclerosis, non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, optic neuritis, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, and so on. We focus on the multimodal imaging features, pathophysiological mechanisms of PHOMS, and their association with multiple diseases and healthy people in this review to deepen the ophthalmologists' understanding of PHOMS. Additionally, we provide some new directions for future research.

Cryptococcus neoformans poses a threat to human health, but anticryptococcal therapy is hampered by the emergence of drug resistance, whose underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Herein, we discovered that Isw1, an imitation switch chromatin remodeling ATPase, functions as a master modulator of genes responsible for in vivo and in vitro multidrug resistance in C. neoformans. Cells with the disrupted ISW1 gene exhibited profound resistance to multiple antifungal drugs. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed that Isw1 is both acetylated and ubiquitinated, suggesting that an interplay between these two modification events exists to govern Isw1 function. Mutagenesis studies of acetylation and ubiquitination sites revealed that the acetylation status of Isw1K97 coordinates with its ubiquitination processes at Isw1K113 and Isw1K441 through modulating the interaction between Isw1 and Cdc4, an E3 ligase. Additionally, clinical isolates of C. neoformans overexpressing the degradation-resistant ISW1K97Q allele showed impaired drug-resistant phenotypes. Collectively, our studies revealed a sophisticated acetylation–Isw1–ubiquitination regulation axis that controls multidrug resistance in C. neoformans.

Rapid annealing (RA), or the application of a high temperature for a short duration, is an efficient strategy to promote the nano-crystallization of Fe-based amorphous alloys and improve their soft magnetic properties. Herein, the ternary Fe–Co–B amorphous alloy is investigated as a typical system to reveal the effect of RA on crystallization behavior and soft magnetic properties. It is found that the large superheating generated during RA significantly increases the homogenous nucleation rate of nanocrystals, while the short duration greatly inhibits the growth kinetics, yielding fine and dense nanograins in the amorphous matrix. The Fe–Co–B alloy shows optimized properties of low coercivity (5.6 A/m) and high saturation magnetization (1.87 T) after RA at 813 K for 3 s. In contrast, all superheating and long duration used in conventional annealing produce large and sparse grains with single crystal morphology and large coercivity above 30 A/m. This work reveals the thermodynamic and kinetic effects of RA on the nano-crystallization behavior of Fe-based amorphous alloys, showing that the RA treatment (high annealing temperature and short annealing time) can induce in-situ homogeneous nucleation and growth, which may help guide the design of Cu-free amorphous/nanocrystalline alloys with desirable soft magnetic properties.

Abstract Anterior cervical surgery is widely accepted and time-tested surgical procedure for treating cervical radiculopathy and myelopathy. However, there is concern about the high adjacent segment degeneration rate and implant subsidence after the surgery using the traditional polyetheretherketone cage. Thus, we creatively designed a polyurethane cervical implant that can continuous load-sharing through elastic deformation and decrease postoperative stress concentration at adjacent segments. In this study, the design rationality and safety of this novel implant was evaluated based on several mechanical parameters including compression test, creeping test, push-out test and subsidence test. The results showed that the novel cervical implant remained intact under the compressive axial load of 8000 N and continues to maintained the elastic deformation phase. The minimum push-out load of the implant was 181.17 N, which was significantly higher than the maximum compressive shear load of 20 N experienced by a normal human cervical intervertebral disc. Besides, the creep recovery behaviour of the implant closely resembled what has been reported for natural intervertebral discs and clinically applied cervical devices in literature. Under the load of simulating daily activities of the cervical spine, the implant longitudinal displacement was only 0.54 mm. In conclusion, this study showed that the current design of the elastically deformable implant was reasonable and stable to fulfil the mechanical requirements of a cervical prosthesis under physiological loads. After a more comprehensive understanding of bone formation and stress distribution after implantation, this cervical implant is promising to be applied to certain patients in clinical practice.

Objective To evaluate the effect of ultrasonography visualization teaching in the integration course of diagnostics and ultrasonic medicine for eight-year clinical medicine program students and to provide reference for further optimization of the teaching program. Methods The study conducted a questionnaire survey with electronic questionnaire in the eight-year clinical medicine program students from Peking Union Medical College who participated in ultrasonography visualization teaching of neck and abdomen. We adopted self-control study(data from the questionnaires completed by the same student before and after the course) to compare the accuracy of each knowledge point before and after teaching to evaluate the teaching effect, and collected course satisfaction ratings and feedback from the students. Results A total of 124 eight-year medical students participated in the survey, with 107 cases eight-year clinical medicine program students in grade 2017, and 17 cases '4+4' pilot class students in grade 2019 from Peking Union Medical College. Altogether 116 valid questionnaires (the response rate was 93.5%, 116/124) were collected for neck ultrasound courses and 101 valid questionnaires (the response rate was 94.4%, 101/107) for abdominal ultrasound courses. After the teaching of neck ultrasound course, the correctness of 68.8%(11/16) and 66.7%(10/15) of the knowledge points was significantly improved for the grade of 2017 and 2019 medicine students, respectively (all P < 0.05); after the teaching of abdominal ultrasound course, the correctness of 80%(4/5) of the knowledge points was significantly improved for both the grade of 2017 and 2019 medicine students (all P < 0.05). Course satisfaction surveys showed that 99.1%(115/116)of the students were very satisfied or satisfied with the cervical ultrasound course, and 0.9%(1/116) were somewhat satisfied. As for the abdominal ultrasound course, 99.0% (100/101) of the students were very satisfied or satisfied and 1.0%(1/101) were somewhat satisfied. Twenty one medical students gave feedback on the evaluation of the course, believing that ultrasound visualization teaching improved learning initiative (52%, 11/21) and learning efficiency (43%, 9/21) and stimulated learning interest (5%, 1/21); 27 medical students made suggestions on the teaching mode, among which 'increasing teaching hours' accounted for the highest proportion (56%, 15/27), followed by 'recommending reference books' (26%, 7/27). Conclusion The ultrasonography visualization teaching improves the learning initiative and efficiency of eight-year clinical medicine program undergraduates, stimulates the learning interest, and promotes their mastery of relevant knowledge.

Chlorophyll, as a key component of crop leaves for photosynthesis, is one significant indicator for evaluating the photosynthetic efficiency and developmental status of crops. Fractional-order differentiation (FOD) enhances the feature spectral information and reduces the background noise. In this study, we analyzed hyperspectral data from grape leaves of different varieties and fertility periods with FOD to monitor the leaves’ chlorophyll content (LCC). Firstly, through sensitive analysis, the fractional-order differential character bands were identified, which was used to construct the typical vegetation index (VI). Then, the grape LCC prediction model was built based on the random forest regression algorithm (RFR). The results showed the following: (1) FOD differential spectra had a higher sensitivity to LCC compared with the original spectra, and the constructed VIs had the best estimation performance at the 1.2th-order differential. (2) The accuracy of the FOD-RFR model was better than that of the conventional integer-order model at different fertility periods, but there were differences in the number of optimal orders. (3) The LCC prediction model for whole fertility periods achieved good prediction at order 1.3, R2 = 0.778, RMSE = 2.1, and NRMSE = 4.7%. As compared to the original reflectance spectra, R2 improved by 0.173; RMSE and NRMSE decreased, respectively, by 0.699 and 1.5%. This indicates that the combination of FOD and RFR based on hyperspectral data has great potential for the efficient monitoring of grape LCC. It can provide technical support for the rapid quantitative estimation of grape LCC and methodological reference for other physiological and biochemical indicators in hyperspectral monitoring.

A multisubstructure-based method for assessing the deformation and stress of a fine-meshed model according to a coarse model was proposed. Integrating boundary conditions in a local fine-meshed model, a displacement mapping matrix from the coarse model to the fine-meshed model was constructed. The method was verified by a three-level panel in a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) framework by integrating the steady vortex lattice method (VLM). A comparison between the inner deformation distribution of the coarse model and that of the global fine-meshed model obtained from MSC.Nastran was carried out, and the results showed that the coarse model failed to demonstrate reliable strains and stresses. In contrast, the proposed method in this paper can effectively depict the inner deformation and critical stress distribution. The deformation error was lower than 8%, meeting engineering requirements. Moreover, the results of different working conditions can achieve a similar relative error of displacement for an identical position. The easy storage of the displacement mapping matrix and the convenience of the boundary information transformation among all substructure levels are prominent aspects. As a result, there is a solid foundation for addressing the time-dependent problem in spite of the simultaneity and region.

Objective To summarize the clinical characteristics of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) in children with renal disease in order to provide reference for early prevention, diagnosis and treatment and improving prognosis. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical characteristics, auxiliary examinations, medication use and prognosis of children with renal disease complicated with PRES confirmed in the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Chinese Medicine from 2015 to 2022, and the relevant literatures were reviewed. Results Thirteen children aged 3 to 14 (8.38±3.36) years old were enrolled, including 9 males and 4 females. There were 10 cases (76.92%) of infection before the onset of the disease, 10 cases (76.92%) of lower serum albumin levels than normal, 4 cases (30.77%) accompanied by varying degrees of hypertension, 10 cases (76.92%) treated with glucocorticoids (GC) combined with immunosuppressive agents, 2 cases (15.38%) treated with GC and 1 case (7.69%) treated with immunosuppressive agents. The main clinical manifestations were seizures, disturbance of consciousness, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache and ocular discomfort. The lesions were mostly distributed in bilateral frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital cortex and subcortex. After treatment, the clinical manifestations and imaging findings returned to normal in a short period of time. Conclusion The incidence of PRES in children with renal disease is related to GC and immunosuppressive therapy, and cyclic lipopeptide antibiotics, hypoproteinemia and hypertension may increase the risk of disease. PRES usually is reversible and has a good prognosis, but delayed treatment can worsen progressively and even cause irreversible craniocerebral nerve damage.

Abstract Background Cortisol plays a role in the pathogenesis of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). CSC patients have abnormal time-dependent changes in cortisol levels. Here we report a rare case of a patient with central serous chorioretinopathy whose pigment epithelial detachment (PED) exhibited time-dependent recurrence and resolution. Case presentation A 47-year-old man presented in 2016 for vision loss in the left eye related to recurrent CSC. During follow-up, his PED was observed to resolve spontaneously while he was still in our clinic and recurred the next morning. Such time-dependent changes of the PED were observed in several next follow-ups without any intervention. After excluding possible external factors, the abnormal diurnal variation of cortisol was considered as the internal factor affecting PED. Conclusions This is the first article that described the spontaneous time-dependent recurrence and resolution of PED without external interference, where endogenous cortisol may be responsible. Interventions against the abnormal cortisol level might be a potential treatment strategy for CSC. More research is urged to explore the impact of the diurnal change in cortisol levels on eyes with CSC.

BackgroundThe association between serum sex hormones and lower extremity varicose veins has been reported in observational studies. However, it is unclear whether the association reflects a causal relationship. Besides, serum sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) has been rarely studied in lower extremity varicose veins. Here, we aim to investigate the association between serum levels of SHBG, testosterone, and estradiol and the risk of lower extremity varicose veins using Mendelian randomization (MR).MethodsWe obtained genome-wide association study summary statistics for serum SHBG levels with 369,002 European participants, serum testosterone levels with 424,907 European participants, serum estradiol levels with 361,194 European participants, and lower extremity varicose veins with 207,055 European participants. First, a univariable MR was performed to identify the causality from SHBG and sex hormone levels to lower extremity varicose veins with several sensitivity analyses being performed. Then, a multivariable MR (MVMR) was performed to further assess whether the causal effects were independent. Finally, we performed a gender-stratified MR to understand the role of genders on lower extremity varicose veins.ResultsGenetically predicted higher serum SHBG levels significantly increased the risk of lower extremity varicose veins in the univariable MR analysis (OR=1.39; 95% CI: 1.13–1.70; P=1.58×10-3). Sensitivity analyses and MVMR (OR=1.50; 95% CI:1.13-1.99; P=5.61×10-3) verified the robustness of the causal relationships. Gender-stratified MR revealed that higher serum SHBG levels were associated with lower extremity varicose veins in both sexes. However, the OR of serum SHBG levels on lower extremity varicose veins risk in females (OR=1.51; 95% CI: 1.23–1.87; P=1.00×10-4) was greater than in males (OR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.04–1.54; P=1.86×10-2).ConclusionsSerum SHBG levels are positively related to lower extremity varicose veins risk in both sexes, especially in females. This may partly explain the higher prevalence of varicose vines among females.

This study aimed at investigating the correlation between SII and serum ferritin in people aged over 20 in the US.Methods The measurements of the systemic immune-inflammation indicator (SII = platelet count × neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) and serum ferritin of 5491 participants in the NHANES database served as the independent and dependent variables for the present cross-sectional study, respectively. AbstractPurpose To evaluate the retinal and choroidal microvasculature after one or two horizontal rectus muscle surgeries in strabismus patients using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA).Methods 30 eyes of 26 patients who underwent horizontal rectus muscle surgery were included in this study. Group A, A’ and Group B , B’ respectively consisted preoperative and postoperative measurements of patients who underwent one or two horizontal rectus muscle surgeries. We analyzed the vessel density (VD) of the superficial vascular complex (SVC), the deep vascular complex (DVC), the choriocapillary layer (CC), choroidal vascular index (CVI), choroidal thickness (T-Ch) and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (T-RNFL) preoperatively, and one week postoperatively.Results Only in the nasal sector of the perifoveal zone, the VD in SVC demonstrated a significant increase in Group A’ (p = 0.027). There was a statistically significant difference in the VD changes of SVC between Group A and Group B (p = 0.043). The VD in DVC did not change significantly in the whole macular compared with the preoperative. Hybrid rocket engines suffer from the restricted mechanical properties and low regression rates of current polymeric fuel grains. We propose a three-dimensional printed aluminium (Al) nested composite fuel grain with millimetre-scale lattice pores (referred to as Al-L). In this study, breathable Al blades with micrometer-scale interconnected pores (Al-B) and blades combining millimetre-scale and micrometer-scale pores (Al-B&L) are designed. The formation mechanisms, characteristics, and effects of the breathable blades are analysed in simulations, micro-computed tomography, and cyclic compression tests. The mechanical properties of the composite fuel grains are investigated numerically and in compression tests. Al-B has the highest Young’s modulus at more than 15 times that of a paraffin-based fuel grain and Al-B&L has the highest yield stress at 4 times that of the paraffin-based fuel grain. Referring to combustion properties, the regression rates of the Al-B and Al-B&L grains are respectively 63.3% and 58.2% greater than the regression rate of the paraffin-based fuel grain.

Systemic infection with Cryptococcus neoformans, a dangerous and contagious pathogen found throughout the world, frequently results in lethal cryptococcal pneumonia and meningoencephalitis, and no effective treatments and vaccination of cryptococcosis are available. Here, we describe Prm1, a novel regulator of C. neoformans virulence. C. neoformans prm1Δ cells exhibit extreme sensitivity to various environmental stress conditions. Furthermore, prm1Δ cells show deficiencies in the biosynthesis of chitosan and mannoprotein, which in turn result in impairment of cell wall integrity. Treatment of mice with heat-killed prm1Δ cells was found to facilitate the host immunological defence against infection with wild-type C. neoformans. Further investigation demonstrated that prm1Δ cells strongly promote pulmonary production of interferon-γ, leading to activation of macrophage M1 differentiation and inhibition of M2 polarization. Therefore, our findings suggest that C. neoformans Prm1 may be a viable target for the development of anti-cryptococcosis medications and, cells lacking Prm1 represent a promising candidate for a vaccine.

Abstract There are only six isolated living giant panda populations, and a comprehensive understanding of their genetic health status is crucial for the conservation of this vulnerable species. Liangshan Mountains is one of the main distribution areas of living giant pandas and is outside the newly established Giant panda national park. In this study, 971 giant panda fecal samples were collected in the heartland of Liangshan Mountains (Mabian Dafengding Nature Reserve: MB; Meigu Dafengding Nature Reserve: MG; and Heizhugou Nature Reserve: HZG). Microsatellite markers and mitochondrial D‐loop sequences were used to estimate population size and genetic diversity. We identified 92 individuals (MB: 27, MG: 22, HZG: 43) from the three reserves. Our results showed that: (1) genetic diversity of three giant panda populations was moderate; (2) several loci deviated significantly from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and almost all these deviated loci showed significant heterozygote deficiencies and inbreeding; (3) three giant panda populations have substantial genetic differentiation with the most differentiation between MB and the two other populations; and (4) a large amount of giant panda feces outside the three reserves were found, implying the existence of protection gap. These results indicated that under stochastic events, the giant panda populations in Liangshan Mountains are at risk of genetic decline or extinction and urgent need of human management. This study revealed that high attention should be paid to the protection of these giant panda populations outside the Giant panda national park, to ensure their survival in their distribution areas.

Abstract Background Neuroinflammation plays a critical role in amyloid-β (Aβ) pathophysiology. The cytokine interleukin-17A (IL-17) is involved in the learning and memory process in the central nervous system, and its level was reported to be increased in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains, while the effect of IL-17 on the course of Aβ has not been well defined. Methods Here, we used APP/PS1 mice to detect the IL-17 expression level. Primary hippocampal neurons were treated with IL-17, and immunofluorescence was used to investigate whether IL-17 induced neuronal damage. At the same time, male C57BL/6 mice were injected with Aβ42 to mimic the Aβ model. Then, IL-17 neutralizing antibody (IL-17Ab) was injected into the lateral ventricle, and the open-field test, novel objective recognition test, and fear conditioning test were used to detect cognitive function. Long-term potentiation (LTP) was used to assess synaptic plasticity, molecular biology technology was used to assess the IL-17/TRAF6/NF-κB pathway, and ELISA was used to detect inflammatory factors. Results Altogether, we found that IL-17 was increased in APP/PS1 mice and induced neural damage by administration to primary hippocampal neurons. Interestingly, using Aβ42 mice, the results showed that the level of IL-17 was increased in Aβ42 model mice, and IL-17Ab could ameliorate Aβ-induced neurotoxicity and cognitive decline in 10 C57BL/6 mice by downregulating the TRAF6/NF-κB pathway. Conclusion These findings highlight the pathogenic role of IL-17 in Aβ-induced synaptic dysfunction and cognitive deficits. Inhibition of IL-17 could ameliorate Aβ-induced neurotoxicity and cognitive decline in C57BL/6 mice by downregulating the TRAF6/NF-κB pathway, which provides new clues for the mechanism of Aβ-induced cognitive impairments.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the scientific community has been galvanized to unravel the enigmatic role of bioaerosols in the transmission of infectious agents. This literature review, anchored in the extensive Web of Science Core Collection database covering the period from 1990 to 2023, utilizes a bibliometric approach to chart the dynamic landscape of bioaerosol research. It meticulously documents the paradigm shifts and burgeoning areas of inquiry that have emerged in the aftermath of the pandemic. This review meticulously maps out the sources and detection strategies of pathogens in a variety of ecosystems. It clearly shows that impaction and filtration sampling methods, followed by colony counting and PCR-based detection techniques, were predominantly used in the scientific works within the previous three decades. It synthesizes the progress and limitations inherent in a range of models for predicting aerosol-mediated pathogen spread and provides a comparative analysis of eDNA technology and traditional analytical techniques for bioaerosols. The accuracy of these detection methods and forecasting models is paramount for the early recognition of transmission risks, which, in turn, paves the way for prompt and effective disease mitigation strategies. By providing a thorough analysis of the historical progression and current state of bioaerosol research, this review illuminates the path ahead, identifying the critical research needs that will drive the field’s advancement in the years to come.

We analyze the Goos–Hänchen (GH) shift and longitudinal spin splitting (LSS) at a planar interface between two optical media in the spin representation. While these optical effects have been studied previously, we examine the direct and cross-reflected light fields, and their interference from the spin representation to reveal the physical mechanism of the GH shift and establish a quantitative relationship between it and LSS. Furthermore, we show that angular asymmetric spin splitting occurs under the spin representation when linearly polarized light with a phase difference of 180° and an amplitude ratio angle deviating from 45° impinges on the air–glass interface at Brewster’s angle. Finally, we reveal that the spin component field of the reflected light field for the total reflection case is different from that of the Brewster angle reflection, the most typical manifestation is that the intensity of the two spin component fields is not equal.

With the continuous operation of analog circuits, the component degradation problem gradually comes to the forefront, which may lead to problems, such as circuit performance degradation, system stability reductions, and signal quality degradation, which could be particularly evident in increasingly complex electronic systems. At the same time, due to factors, such as continuous signal transformation, the fluctuation of component parameters, and the nonlinear characteristics of components, traditional fault localization methods are still facing significant challenges when dealing with large-scale complex circuit faults. Based on this, this paper proposes a fault-diagnosis method for analog circuits using the ECWGEO algorithm, an enhanced version of the GEO algorithm, to de-optimize the 1D-CNN with an attention mechanism to handle time–frequency fusion inputs. Firstly, a typical circuit-quad op-amp dual second-order filter circuit is selected to construct a fault-simulation model, and Monte Carlo analysis is used to obtain a large number of samples as the dataset of this study. Secondly, the 1D-CNN network structure is improved for the characteristics of the analog circuits themselves, and the time–frequency domain fusion input is implemented before inputting it into the network, while the attention mechanism is introduced into the network. Thirdly, instead of relying on traditional experience for network structure determination, this paper adopts a parameter-optimization algorithm for network structure optimization and improves the GEO algorithm according to the problem characteristics, which enhances the diversity of populations in the late stage of its search and accelerates the convergence speed. Finally, experiments are designed to compare the results in different dimensions, and the final proposed structure achieved a 98.93% classification accuracy, which is better than other methods.

BackgroundAutoimmunity and inflammation are the main characteristics of rheumatic diseases and have both been found to be related to glaucoma. However, it remains unclear whether rheumatic diseases increase the risk of glaucoma. Here, we performed a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal effects of six common rheumatic diseases on glaucoma.MethodsSix rheumatic diseases were included: ankylosing spondylitis (AS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sicca syndrome/Sjögren’s sydrome (SS), dermatomyositis (DM), and gout. Glaucoma included primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). Genetic variants associated with these rheumatic diseases and glaucoma were extracted from the genome-wide association studies and FinnGen8 database, respectively. First, a two-sample MR was used to investigate the potential causal association. Then, a multivariable MR was conducted to further verify the results. Inverse-variance weighted MR analysis was used as the main method, together with several sensitivity analyses.ResultsTwo-sample MR suggests that AS is related to a higher risk of both POAG [odds ratio (OR): 1.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13–1.44; p = 1.1 × 10−4] and PACG (OR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.09–2.09, p = 1.4 × 10−2). Multivariable MR shows a similar trend of the effect of AS on POAG (OR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.22–1.90, p = 1.9 × 10−4) and PACG (OR: 2.05, 95% CI: 1.06–3.95, p = 3.2 × 10−2). No significant association was observed between the other five rheumatic diseases and glaucoma.ConclusionsAS is related to an increased risk of POAG and PACG. We stress the importance of glaucoma screening for AS patients.

Introduction: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a most frequently used surgical procedure for treating cervical radiculopathy and myelopathy. However, there is concern about the high adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) rate after ACDF surgery. We creatively designed an elastically deformable cervical implant to reduce the postoperative stress concentration. In this study, we aimed to investigate the biomechanical performance of this novel cervical implant and compare it with the commonly used cervical devices.Methods: Biomechanical test was conducted on twelve fresh-frozen human cadaveric cervical spines (C2–C7) and randomly divided into four groups according to implant types: intact group, Zero-P VA fusion (ACDF) group, the novel cervical implant group and Pretic-I artificial cervical disc (ACDR) group. An optical tracking system was used to evaluate the segmental range of motion (ROM) of the C4/C5, C5/C6, and C6/C7 segments and micro pressure sensor was used to record the maximum facet joint pressure (FJP), maximum intradiscal pressure (IDP) at the C4-5 and C6-7 segments.Results: There were no significant differences in the ROM of adjacent segments between the groups. Compared with the intact group, the ACDR group essentially retained the ROM of the operated segment. The novel cervical implant decrease some ROM of the operated segment, but it was still significantly higher than in the fusion group; The maximum FJP and IDP at the adjacent segments in the ACDF group were significantly higher than those values in the other groups, and there were no differences in the other groups.Conclusion: While the newly developed elastically deformable cervical implant does not completely maintain ROM like the artificial cervical disc, it surpasses the fusion device with regards to biomechanical attributes. After further refinement, this novel implant may be suitable for patients who are prone to severe adjacent segment degeneration after fusion surgery but no indication for artificial cervical disc surgery.

The present study involved building a model of immune-related genes (IRGs) that can predict the survival outcomes of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC). Using the TCGA database, we collected the gene expression profiles of patients with TSCC and analyzed the differences in IRGs obtained from the ImmPort database. Subsequently, we constructed a predictive model. Transcription factors and differentially expressed IRGs can be used to construct TSCC regulatory network. CIBERSORT tool was used to analyze the relative proportion of 22 tumor-infiltrating immune cells in TSCC samples. Finally, a prognostic model is constructed. We established an IRG model formed by seven genes. The receiver operating characteristic value of the prognostic model based on IRGs is 0.739. After the analysis of the correlation between IRGs and clinical and pathological conditions, we found that Gast was related to grade, IRF9, LTB, and T stage. Among the 22 tumor-infiltrating immune cells, the resting natural killer (NK) cells were found to be related to the 5-year survival rate. This study constructed a prognostic model formed by seven IRGs and discussed the tumor-infiltrating immune cells, which are related to the survival outcome, reflecting the potential regulatory role of TSCC tumor immune microenvironment that could potentially promote individualized treatment.

Abstract Chemoresistance has long been the bottleneck of ovarian cancer (OC) prognosis. It has been shown that mitochondria play a crucial role in cell response to chemotherapy and that dysregulated mitochondrial dynamics is intricately linked with diseases like OC, but the underlying mechanisms remain equivocal. Here, we demonstrate a new mechanism where CRL4CUL4A/DDB1 manipulates OC cell chemoresistance by regulating mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy. CRL4CUL4A/DDB1 depletion enhanced mitochondrial fission by upregulating AMPKαThr172 and MFFSer172/Ser146 phosphorylation, which in turn recruited DRP1 to mitochondria. CRL4CUL4A/DDB1 loss stimulated mitophagy through the Parkin-PINK1 pathway to degrade the dysfunctional and fragmented mitochondria. Importantly, CRL4CUL4A/DDB1 loss inhibited OC cell proliferation, whereas inhibiting autophagy partially reversed this disruption. Our findings provide novel insight into the multifaceted function of the CRL4 E3 ubiquitin ligase complex in regulating mitochondrial fission, mitophagy, and OC chemoresistance. Disruption of CRL4CUL4A/DDB1 and mitophagy may be a promising therapeutic strategy to overcome chemoresistance in OC.

Cryptococcal meningoencephalitis (CM) is emerging as an infection in HIV/AIDS patients shifted from primarily ART­naive to ART-experienced individuals, as well as patients with COVID-19 and immunocompetent hosts. This fungal infection is mainly caused by the opportunistic human pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. Brain or central nervous system (CNS) dissemination is the deadliest process for this disease; however, mechanisms underlying this process have yet to be elucidated. Moreover, illustrations of clinically relevant responses in cryptococcosis are currently limited due to the low availability of clinical samples. In this study, to explore the clinically relevant responses during C. neoformans infection, macaque and mouse infection models were employed and miRNA-mRNA transcriptomes were performed and combined, which revealed cytoskeleton, a major feature of HIV/AIDS patients, was a centric pathway regulated in both infection models. Notably, assays of clinical immune cells confirmed an enhanced macrophage “Trojan Horse” in patients with HIV/AIDS, which could be shut down by cytoskeleton inhibitors. Furthermore, myocilin, encoded by MYOC, was found to be a novel enhancer for the macrophage “Trojan Horse,” and an enhanced fungal burden was achieved in the brains of MYOC-transgenic mice. Taken together, the findings from this study reveal fundamental roles of the cytoskeleton and MYOC in fungal CNS dissemination, which not only helps to understand the high prevalence of CM in HIV/AIDS but also facilitates the development of novel therapeutics for meningoencephalitis caused by C. neoformans and other pathogenic microorganisms.

Abstract Background Retinal artery macroaneurysms (RAMs) are focal dilations of the large retinal arteries. Most RAMs are asymptomatic, however, when hemorrhage or exudation caused by a RAM involves the macula, patients can experience marked vision loss. This article reported a rare case of a ruptured RAM due to the Valsalva maneuver in an elderly female with constipation and offered a review of the relevant literature. Case presentation A 78-year-old woman with several risk factors presented with multi-level retinal hemorrhages following a Valsalva maneuver during constipation. Due to the poor coagulation and heavy bleeding in this case, the blood broke through the internal limiting membrane and drained "on its own" into the vitreous cavity. First, we observed the patient and controlled for her risk factors. After the blood was completely drained into the vitreous cavity, the root cause of the bleeding was found to be a RAM rupture. After laser photocoagulation, the patient's vision recovered significantly and remained stable for a long time despite the presence of an epiretinal membrane and a lamellar macular hole. Conclusions This is the first reported case of a RAM rupture by Valsalva maneuver during constipation. For multi-level hemorrhages caused by RAM, measures should be taken to drain out the sub-internal limiting membrane hemorrhage and simultaneously control for risk factors. After the RAM is exposed, laser photocoagulation can be performed.

Most existing agronomic trait models of winter wheat vary across growing seasons, and it is an open question whether a unified statistical model can be developed to predict agronomic traits using a vegetation index (VI) across multiple growing seasons. In this study, we constructed a hierarchical linear model (HLM) to automatically adapt the relationship between VIs and agronomic traits across growing seasons and tested the model’s performance by sensitivity analysis. Results demonstrated that (1) optical VIs give poor performance in predicting AGB and PNC across all growth stages, whereas VIs perform well for LAI, LGB, LNC, and SPAD. (2) The sensitivity indices of the phenological information in the AGB and PNC prediction models were 0.81–0.86 and 0.66–0.73, whereas LAI, LGB, LNC, and SPAD prediction models produced sensitivity indexes of 0.01–0.02, 0.01–0.02, 0.01–0.02, and 0.02–0.08, respectively. (3) The AGB and PNC prediction models considering ZS were more accurate than the prediction models based on VI. Whether or not phenological information is used, there was no difference in model accuracy for LGB, LNC, SPAD, and LAI. This study may provide a guideline for deciding whether phenological correction is required for estimation of agronomic traits across multiple growing seasons.

Background Esophageal cervical spondylosis is a rare type of cervical spondylosis which causes dysphagia. Surgical osteophyte resection is taken when conservative treatment does not respond. However, few reports on its operation and postoperative follow‐up. We first present a case showing how the Zero‐Profile implant system is utilized to treat dysphagia caused by noncontiguous anterior cervical osteophytes. Case Presentation A patient with progressive dysphagia was referred to our department. Imaging examinations revealed a large diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) related anterior osteophyte in C3/4, C6/7 and ossification of the anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments. Anterior cervical osteophytectomy, discectomy, and fusion were performed on C3/4, C6/7. Two Zero‐Profile implants were implanted. Postoperative dysphagia was significantly improved, and the patient was free to swallow large pills or solid foods at nine‐years follow‐up. Conclusion Osteophyte excision can effectively treat esophageal cervical spondylosis, This case shows that fusion using the Zero‐Profile implant system is a viable option for patients with potential cervical instability following osteophyte resection.

Mitochondrial quality control prevents accumulation of intramitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS), thus protecting cells against DNA damage. Here, Gao et al. show that an atypical heat shock factor responds to intramitochondrial stresses and regulates mtROS homeostasis in the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans.

The microstructure and soft magnetic properties of Fe83Si3B11P2Cu1 (at.%) nanocrystalline ribbons with different thicknesses up to 40 μm obtained by annealing the amorphous/nanocrystalline precursors at various heating rates (HRs) were studied. It was found that the thicker melt-spun alloy ribbons contain more and coarser α-Fe grains owing to the lower cooling rates during the solidification of melt spinning. By rapidly annealing the relatively thick amorphous/nanocrystalline precursors with the large-size pre-existing α-Fe grains at a high HR of about 100 °C/s, the resultant nanocrystalline alloys exhibit low coercivity (Hc) of about 5.2 A/m and high saturation magnetization (Bs) of about 1.83 T, which are approximate to the nanocrystalline alloys acquired by annealing the precursors with an amorphous structure. The strong competition among the formation of primary nuclei and the growth of the pre-existing and the newly-nucleated α-Fe induced by the more rapid annealing could effectively suppress the coarsening of the pre-existing α-Fe with the large size up to about 30 nm, which facilitates the formation of the fine and uniform nanostructure and magnetic softening of the resultant nanocrystalline alloys.

Objective: This study focus on solving the problems that the current beverage bottle cap detection system has simple functions, large volume and low color recognition rate. Methods: A design scheme of small beverage bottle cap color recognition system based on ARM processor was proposed. By using the LineSim tool of the simulation software HyperLynx, a four-layer PCB board was designed and impedance matching simulation analysis was obtained after setting transmission line parameters. Through using the compilation software Jupyter Notebook to achieve threshold setting, target contour detection, target frame out and other functions. Results: Under bright and low light conditions, the bottle cap targets of red, green and blue were tested, and the recognition rate of the design scheme for the three colors could reached more than 92.7%. Conclusion: Compared with the Fourier descriptor, the scheme has higher recognition accuracy and precision, and the system also has the function of face recognition, which is suitable for various intelligent application scenarios.
