Abstract

Water is essential for almost every aspect of life on our planet and, unsurprisingly, its properties have been studied in great detail. However, disproportionately little remains known about the electrical properties of interfacial and strongly confined water where its structure deviates from that of bulk water, becoming distinctly layered. The structural change is expected to affect water's conductivity and particularly its polarizability, which in turn modifies intermolecular forces that play a crucial role in many physical and chemical processes. Here we use scanning dielectric microscopy to probe the in-plane electrical properties of water confined between atomically flat surfaces separated by distances down to 1 nm. For confinement exceeding a few nm, water exhibits an in-plane dielectric constant close to that of bulk water and its proton conductivity is notably enhanced, gradually increasing with decreasing water thickness. This trend abruptly changes when the confined water becomes only a few molecules thick. Its in-plane dielectric constant reaches giant, ferroelectric-like values of about 1,000 whereas the conductivity peaks at a few S/m, close to values characteristic of superionic liquids. We attribute the enhancement to strongly disordered hydrogen bonding induced by the few-layer confinement, which facilitates both easier in-plane polarization of molecular dipoles and faster proton exchange. This insight into the electrical properties of nanoconfined water is important for understanding many phenomena that occur at aqueous interfaces and in nanoscale pores.

Abstract

This study reports a low-frequency alternating current (AC) power supply as a novel approach for generating low-pressure capacitively coupled Ar-O2 plasma, offering advantages in cost, compactness, and operational simplicity, which are crucial for both material science and biological applications. The effectiveness of low-frequency AC-generated plasma against traditional RF systems by examining key plasma parameters such as electron density, electron temperature, and electron energy distribution function (EEDF), are investigated. Experimental results revealed that AC power supply could effectively produce low pressure Ar-O2 plasma with comparable properties to RF systems. Most notably, the AC-generated plasma achieved a significant reduction in bacterial growth, suggesting its potential as a more economical and flexible alternative for enhancing plasma-assisted applications in sterilization and material processing., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

With the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativisic Heavy Ion Collider, we characterize $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV p+Au collisions by event activity (EA) measured within the pseudorapidity range $eta$ $in$ [-5, -3.4] in the Au-going direction and report correlations between this EA and hard- and soft- scale particle production at midrapidity ($\eta$ $\in$ [-1, 1]). At the soft scale, charged particle production in low-EA p+Au collisions is comparable to that in p+p collisions and increases monotonically with increasing EA. At the hard scale, we report measurements of high transverse momentum (pT) jets in events of different EAs. In contrast with the soft particle production, high-pT particle production and EA are found to be inversely related. To investigate whether this is a signal of jet quenching in high-EA events, we also report ratios of pT imbalance and azimuthal separation of dijets in high- and low-EA events. Within our measurement precision, no significant differences are observed, disfavoring the presence of jet quenching in the highest 30% EA p+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV., Comment: 12 page, 9 figures

Abstract

Magnon frequency comb provides opportunities for exploring magnon nonlinear effects and measuring the transmission magnon frequency in magnets, whose controllability becomes vital for modulating the operating frequency and improving the measurement accuracy. Nevertheless, such controllable frequency comb remains to be explored. In this work, we investigate theoretically and numerically the skyrmion-induced magnon frequency comb effect generated by interaction between the magnon excitation mode and skyrmion breathing mode in synthetic ferrimagnets. It is revealed that both the skyrmion breathing mode and the magnon frequency gap closely depend on the net angular momentum {\delta}s, emphasizing the pivotal role of {\delta}s as an effective control parameter in governing the comb teeth. With the increase of {\delta}s, the skyrmion size decreases, which results in the enlargement of the breathing frequency and the distance between the comb teeth. Moreover, the dependences of the magnon frequency gap on {\delta}s and the inter-layer coupling allow one to modulate the comb lowest coherent frequency via structural control. Consequently, the coherent modes generated by the comb may range from gigahertz to terahertz frequencies, serving as a bridge between microwave and terahertz waves. Abstract

Flow coefficients ($v_2$ and $v_3$) are measured in high-multiplicity $p$+Au, $d$+Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The measurements utilize two-particle correlations with a pseudorapidity requirement of $|\eta| <$ 0.9 and a pair gap of $|\Delta\eta|>1.0$. The primary focus is on analysis methods, particularly the subtraction of non-flow contributions. Four established non-flow subtraction methods are applied to determine $v_n$, validated using the HIJING event generator. $v_n$ values are compared across the three collision systems at similar multiplicities; this comparison cancels the final state effects and isolates the impact of initial geometry. While $v_2$ values show differences among these collision systems, $v_3$ values are largely similar, consistent with expectations of subnucleon fluctuations in the initial geometry. The ordering of $v_n$ differs quantitatively from previous measurements using two-particle correlations with a larger rapidity gap, which, according to model calculations, can be partially attributed to the effects of longitudinal flow decorrelations. Abstract

The FAST All Sky HI survey (FASHI) was designed to cover the entire sky observable by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), spanning approximately 22000 square degrees of declination between -14 deg and +66 deg, and in the frequency range of 1050-1450 MHz, with the expectation of eventually detecting more than 100000 HI sources. Between August 2020 and June 2023, FASHI had covered more than 7600 square degrees, which is approximately 35% of the total sky observable by FAST. It has a median detection sensitivity of around 0.76 mJy/beam and a spectral line velocity resolution of ~6.4 km/s at a frequency of ~1.4 GHz. As of now, a total of 41741 extragalactic HI sources have been detected in the frequency range 1305.5-1419.5 MHz, corresponding to a redshift limit of z<0.09. By cross-matching FASHI sources with the Siena Galaxy Atlas (SGA) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) catalogs, we found that 16972 (40.7%) sources have spectroscopic redshifts and 10975 (26.3%) sources have only photometric redshifts. Most of the remaining 13794 (33.0%) HI sources are located in the direction of the Galactic plane, making their optical counterparts difficult to identify due to high extinction or high contamination of Galactic stellar sources. Based on current survey results, the FASHI survey is an unprecedented blind extragalactic HI survey. It has higher spectral and spatial resolution and broader coverage than the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA). When completed, FASHI will provide the largest extragalactic HI catalog and an objective view of HI content and large-scale structure in the local universe., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, published in SCPMA. Abstract

We report the systematic measurement of protons and light nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 3 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) spectra of protons ($p$), deuterons ($d$), tritons ($t$), $^{3}\mathrm{He}$, and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ are measured from mid-rapidity to target rapidity for different collision centralities. We present the rapidity and centrality dependence of particle yields ($dN/dy$), average transverse momentum ($\langle p_{T}\rangle$), yield ratios ($d/p$, $t/p$,$^{3}\mathrm{He}/p$, $^{4}\mathrm{He}/p$), as well as the coalescence parameters ($B_2$, $B_3$). The 4$\pi$ yields for various particles are determined by utilizing the measured rapidity distributions, $dN/dy$. Furthermore, we present the energy, centrality, and rapidity dependence of the compound yield ratios ($N_{p} \times N_{t} / N_{d}^{2}$) and compare them with various model calculations. Abstract

We report on the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of net-proton cumulant ratios up to sixth order from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV $p$+$p$ collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured ratios $C_{4}/C_{2}$, $C_{5}/C_{1}$, and $C_{6}/C_{2}$ decrease with increased charged-particle multiplicity and rapidity acceptance. Neither the Skellam baselines nor PYTHIA8 calculations account for the observed multiplicity dependence. In addition, the ratios $C_{5}/C_{1}$ and $C_{6}/C_{2}$ approach negative values in the highest-multiplicity events, which implies that thermalized QCD matter may be formed in $p$+$p$ collisions., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted version by PLB

Abstract

At the origin of the Universe, asymmetry between the amount of created matter and antimatter led to the matter-dominated Universe as we know today. The origins of this asymmetry remain not completely understood yet. High-energy nuclear collisions create conditions similar to the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang, with comparable amounts of matter and antimatter. Much of the created antimatter escapes the rapidly expanding fireball without annihilating, making such collisions an effective experimental tool to create heavy antimatter nuclear objects and study their properties, hoping to shed some light on existing questions on the asymmetry between matter and antimatter. Here we report the first observation of the antimatter hypernucleus \hbox{$^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$}, composed of a $\bar{\Lambda}$ , an antiproton and two antineutrons. The discovery was made through its two-body decay after production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In total, 15.6 candidate \hbox{$^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} antimatter hypernuclei are obtained with an estimated background count of 6.4. The lifetimes of the antihypernuclei \hbox{$^3_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} and \hbox{$^4_{\bar{\Lambda}}\overline{\hbox{H}}$} are measured and compared with the lifetimes of their corresponding hypernuclei, testing the symmetry between matter and antimatter. Abstract

For the search of the chiral magnetic effect (CME), STAR previously presented the results from isobar collisions (${^{96}_{44}\text{Ru}}+{^{96}_{44}\text{Ru}}$, ${^{96}_{40}\text{Zr}}+{^{96}_{40}\text{Zr}}$) obtained through a blind analysis. The ratio of results in Ru+Ru to Zr+Zr collisions for the CME-sensitive charge-dependent azimuthal correlator ($\Delta\gamma$), normalized by elliptic anisotropy ($v_{2}$), was observed to be close to but systematically larger than the inverse multiplicity ratio. The background baseline for the isobar ratio, $Y = \frac{(\Delta\gamma/v_{2})^{\text{Ru}}}{(\Delta\gamma/v_{2})^{\text{Zr}}}$, is naively expected to be $\frac{(1/N)^{\text{Ru}}}{(1/N)^{\text{Zr}}}$; however, genuine two- and three-particle correlations are expected to alter it. We estimate the contributions to $Y$ from those correlations, utilizing both the isobar data and HIJING simulations. After including those contributions, we arrive at a final background baseline for $Y$, which is consistent with the isobar data. We extract an upper limit for the CME fraction in the $\Delta\gamma$ measurement of approximately $10\%$ at a $95\%$ confidence level on in isobar collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}} = 200$ GeV, with an expected $15\%$ difference in their squared magnetic fields., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

We report results on an elastic cross section measurement in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, obtained with the Roman Pot setup of the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elastic differential cross section is measured in the four-momentum transfer squared range $0.23 \leq -t \leq 0.67$ GeV$^2$. We find that a constant slope $B$ does not fit the data in the aforementioned $t$ range, and we obtain a much better fit using a second-order polynomial for $B(t)$. The $t$ dependence of $B$ is determined using six subintervals of $t$ in the STAR measured $t$ range, and is in good agreement with the phenomenological models. The measured elastic differential cross section $\mathrm{d}\sigma/\mathrm{dt}$ agrees well with the results obtained at $\sqrt{s} = 546$ GeV for proton--antiproton collisions by the UA4 experiment. We also determine that the integrated elastic cross section within the STAR $t$-range is $\sigma^\mathrm{fid}_\mathrm{el} = 462.1 \pm 0.9 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 1.1 (\mathrm {syst.}) \pm 11.6 (\mathrm {scale})$~$\mu\mathrm{b}$., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures Version as published in Physics Letters B. Abstract

The longitudinal and transverse spin transfers to $\Lambda$ ($\overline{\Lambda}$) hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions are expected to be sensitive to the helicity and transversity distributions, respectively, of (anti-)strange quarks in the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation functions. We report improved measurements of the longitudinal spin transfer coefficient, $D_{LL}$, and the transverse spin transfer coefficient, $D_{TT}$, to $\Lambda$ and $\overline{\Lambda}$ in polarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The data set includes longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 52 pb$^{-1}$, and transversely polarized proton-proton collisions with a similar integrated luminosity. Both data sets have about twice the statistics of previous results and cover a kinematic range of $|\eta_{\Lambda(\overline{\Lambda})}|$ $<$ 1.2 and transverse momentum $p_{T,{\Lambda(\overline{\Lambda})}}$ up to 8 GeV/$c$. We also report the first measurements of the hyperon spin transfer coefficients $D_{LL}$ and $D_{TT}$ as a function of the fractional jet momentum $z$ carried by the hyperon, which can provide more direct constraints on the polarized fragmentation functions.

Abstract

We measure triangular flow relative to the reaction plane at 3 GeV center-of-mass energy in Au+Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant $v_3$ signal for protons is observed, which increases for higher rapidity, higher transverse momentum, and more peripheral collisions. The triangular flow is essentially rapidity-odd with a slope at mid-rapidity, $dv_3/dy|_{(y=0)}$, opposite in sign compared to the slope for directed flow. No significant $v_3$ signal is observed for charged pions and kaons. Comparisons with models suggest that a mean field potential is required to describe these results, and that the triangular shape of the participant nucleons is the result of stopping and nuclear geometry., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

Comprehending the complex pathological processes that underlie sepsis is integral to the creation of efficacious treatments. Despite the inability of animal models to entirely reproduce the clinical intricacies related to sepsis, they are invaluable instruments for the exploration and development of therapeutic approaches. Within this context, the zebrafish model is particularly noteworthy due to its genetic tractability, transparency, and appropriateness for high-throughput screening of genetic mutants and therapeutic compounds. This scholarly review emphasizes the crucial role that the zebrafish disease model plays in enhancing our comprehension of sepsis, by exploring its applications in deciphering immune and inflammatory responses, evaluating the consequences of genetic alterations, and examining novel therapeutic agents. The Insights derived from zebrafish research not only augment our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of sepsis, but also possess considerable potential for the transference of these discoveries into clinical therapies, thus potentially transforming the approach to sepsis management. The objective of this scholarly article is to underscore the importance of zebrafish in the realm of biomedical research pertaining to sepsis, and to delineate forthcoming opportunities for utilizing this model in clinical applications. The study aimed to assess the association between H-type hypertension and clinical prognosis in patients with LVO after receiving EVT.Methods: Our study enrolled patients from the Endovascular Treatment With versus Without Tirofiban for Stroke Patients with Large Vessel Occlusion (RESCUE BT) Trial. H-type hypertension is defined as patients with hypertension and homocysteine (Hcy) ≥ 10μmol/L. The primary outcome was a favorable functional outcome, defined as a score of 0– 2 on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 90 days. The secondary outcomes were mortality, successful recanalization, futile recanalization, and symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH).Results: The plasma homocysteine level was recorded for 215 patients with hypertension in our study. Among those patients, 172 patients (80%) were founded with Hcy ≥ 10μmol/L (H-type hypertension), and 43 patients (20%) with Hcy < 10μmol/L (non-H-type hypertension). The probability of favorable outcome decreased with homocysteine increasing in patients with hypertension. H-type hypertension was associated with a low probability of favorable outcome (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 0.38 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.18– 0.80]; p = 0.01) at 90 days. The effects of H-type hypertension on mortality (aOR, 1.90 [95% CI, 0.67– 5.39]; p = 0.23) and sICH (aOR, 0.55 [95% CI, 0.13– 2.29]; p = 0.41) were not significant.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that patients with H-type hypertension have a lower likelihood of achieving favorable outcomes but do not have an increased mortality rate within 90 days.Keywords: H-type hypertension, clinical prognoses, large vessel occlusion

Curcumin (Cur) is a natural polyphenolic compound that is regarded as a potent neuroprotective agent. Compared to synthetic pharmaceuticals, Cur possesses minimal side effects and exhibits multiple mechanisms of action, offering significant advantages in the treatment of ischemic stroke. However, drawbacks such as poor water solubility and transmembrane permeability limit the efficacy of Cur. In recent years, nano-delivery systems have attracted great interest in the field of stroke therapy as an effective method to improve drug solubility and cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB).Methods: In this study, a novel nanomedicine (Cur@GAR NPs) for ischemic stroke treatment was developed based on Cur-loaded gelatin nanoparticles (Cur@Gel NPs) that were then functionalized and modified with rabies virus glycoprotein (RVG29) to target brain tissue. The stability, antimicrobial properties, antioxidant properties, neuroprotective effects, neuronal cell uptake, and biocompatibility of Cur@GAR NPs were investigated in vitro. The in vivo therapeutic effect of Cur@GAR NPs on ischemic stroke was investigated in a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rat model using the Morris water maze test and the open field test, and the potential mechanism of action was further investigated by histological analysis.Results: The resulting Cur@GAR NPs improved the solubility of Cur and exhibited good dispersion. In vitro studies have shown that Cur@GAR NPs exhibit great antimicrobial properties, antioxidant properties and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) protection. Notably, RVG29 significantly enhanced the uptake of Cur@GAR NPs by SH-SY5Y cells. Furthermore, in vivo studies verified the role of Cur@GAR NPs in reducing nerve damage and supporting neurological recovery. In the MCAO rat model, Cur@GAR NPs significantly attenuated neuroinflammation, reduced neuronal apoptosis and restored behavioral functions to a great extent.Conclusion: Together these findings implied that Cur@GAR NPs could provide a novel and promising approach for effective ischemic stroke treatment. Conventional pharmacological interventions frequently entail undesirable side effects, and while probiotics offer benefits, they are hindered by constraints such as diminished stability and effectiveness within the gastrointestinal milieu. Given these complications, the advent of bioengineered probiotics is a promising alternative for DM management.Aim of Review: The objective of this review is to provide an exhaustive synthesis of the most recent studies on the use of engineered probiotics in the management of DM. This study aimed to clarify the mechanisms through which these probiotics function, evaluate their clinical effectiveness, and enhance public awareness of their prospective advantages in the treatment of DM.Key Scientific Concepts of Review: Scholarly critiques have explored diverse methodologies of probiotic engineering, including physical alteration, bioenrichment, and genetic manipulation. These techniques augment the therapeutic potency of probiotics by ameliorating gut microbiota, fortifying the intestinal barrier, modulating metabolic pathways, and regulating immune responses. Such advancements have established engineered probiotics as a credible therapeutic strategy for DM, potentially providing enhanced results compared to conventional treatments. In this paper, we used five single models: ARIMA, SARIMA, Prophet, BP neural network, and LSTM method to model and predict the number of monthly AIDS incidence cases and mortality cases in China. We have also proposed the LSTM-SARIMA combination model to enhance the accuracy of the prediction. This study provides strong data support for the prevention and treatment of AIDS.Methods: We collected data on monthly AIDS incidence cases and mortality cases in China from January 2010 to February 2024. Among them, for modeling, we used data from January 2010 to February 2021 and the rest for validation. Treatments were applied to the dataset based on its characteristics during modeling. All models in our study were performed using Python 3.11.6. Meanwhile, we used the constructed model to predict monthly incidence and mortality cases from March 2024 to July 2024. We then evaluated our prediction results using RMSE, MAE, MAPE, and SMAPE.Results: The deep learning methods of LSTM and BPNN outperform ARIMA, SARIMA, and Prophet in predicting the number of mortality cases. When predicting the number of AIDS incidence cases, there is little difference between the two types of methods, and the LSTM method performs slightly better than the rest of the methods. Meanwhile, the average error in predicting AIDS mortality cases is significantly lower than in predicting AIDS incidence cases. The LSTM-SARIMA method outperforms other methods in predicting AIDS incidence and mortality.Conclusion: Due to the different characteristics of the AIDS incidence and mortality cases series, the performance of distinct methods is slightly different. The AIDS mortality series is smoother than the incidence series. The combined LSTM-SARIMA model outperforms the traditional method in prediction and the LSTM method alone, which is of practical significance for optimizing the prediction results of AIDS.Keywords: AIDS, ARIMA model, Prophet model, deep learning model, LSTM-SARIMA combination model

The occurrence of Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) after treatment categorized patients into non-PHN and PHN groups. The predictive role of CPT indices for PRF outcomes was assessed using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve and Area Under Curve (AUC). Then the dataset was split into a training set (n=74) and a validation set (n=32). Factors associated with PHN development were identified using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. A nomogram model was developed using significant predictors and internal validation was performed using valid set data.Results: Among the 106 patients, 45 had a poor prognosis. Significant differences in age, preoperative Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) score, and 5Hz CPT ratio were observed between the groups (p< 0.05). Logistic regression identified these factors as independent predictors for PRF prognosis (p< 0.05). The 5Hz CPT ratio demonstrated predictive value (AUC= 0.764, 95% CI: 0.674– 0.855). The nomogram model, incorporating these predictors, showed high AUC in both the training (0.863, 95% CI: 0.776– 0.950) and validation sets (0.859, 95% CI: 0.721– 0.998). Calibration curves indicated good model fit, and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test confirmed this (p> 0.05). Decision Curve Analysis (DCA) highlighted the model’s predictive advantage.Conclusion: The 5Hz CPT ratio can predict the prognosis of PRF in AHN patients. The nomogram model has high precision and clinical utility. This study aims to validate the mediating roles of social anxiety and psychological resilience by examining the association between affective/cognitive empathy and loneliness among Chinese rural left-behind children.Methods: This cross-sectional survey employed a convenience sampling approach among Chinese left-behind children. A total of 540 participants aged 6 to 11 years old (Average age = 8.54, SD = 1.682) from 3 primary schools in Hunan Province completed the Children’s Loneliness Scale, Social Anxiety Scale for Children, The Chinese version of Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Basic Empathy Scale. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 27.0, Origin 2020, and Mplus 8.3.Results: Pearson correlation analyses suggested strong significant correlations among affective/cognitive empathy, loneliness, social anxiety, and psychological resilience. Path analyses indicated that the chain mediation effect size of social anxiety and psychological resilience was 0.016 between affective empathy and loneliness, while the chain mediation effect size between cognitive empathy and loneliness was − 0.011.Conclusion: Affective empathy positively correlates with loneliness among Chinese left-behind children through social anxiety and resilience, while cognitive empathy negatively correlates with loneliness. These findings suggest that left-behind children should enhance their cognitive empathy and psychological resilience to reduce their social anxiety, thereby mitigating their loneliness.Keywords: left-behind children, empathy, loneliness, social anxiety, resilience

According to whether fUTI occurs after operation, collected data were divided to the patients into fUTI and non-fUTI. Univariate analysis, relative operating characteristic (ROC) curves and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed on the data.Results: A total of 405 patients were enrolled in the study. The procedure was successfully performed in all patients, and the incidence of fUTI was 8.4% (34/405). Eight patients eventually developed sepsis, and the incidence of sepsis in fUTI patients was 23.5%. The result shows a significant correlation between NLR and fUTI (95% confidence interval [CI],1.21– 1.83, Odds ratio [OR]=1.49, p< 0.001). The predictive ability of NLR on the occurrence of fUTI was assessed by plotting relative operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The area under the curve (AUC) in the ROC curve for NLR was 0.718 according to the Youden index, and the best cut-off value of NLR was 2.71. Furthermore, logistic multiple regression model adjustment was carried out to further confirm the robustness of the relationship between NLR and fUTI. The results indicated robustness regardless of whether NLR was a continuous variable or a categorical variable.Conclusion: NLR can be used as a simple and effective preoperative indicator for the prediction of fUTI in patients undergoing PCNL.Keywords: percutaneous nephrolithotomy, febrile urinary tract infection, neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio

Abstract

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon that arises from the QCD anomaly in the presence of an external magnetic field. The experimental search for its evidence has been one of the key goals of the physics program of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The STAR collaboration has previously presented the results of a blind analysis of isobar collisions (${^{96}_{44}\text{Ru}}+{^{96}_{44}\text{Ru}}$, ${^{96}_{40}\text{Zr}}+{^{96}_{40}\text{Zr}}$) in the search for the CME. The isobar ratio ($Y$) of CME-sensitive observable, charge separation scaled by elliptic anisotropy, is close to but systematically larger than the inverse multiplicity ratio, the naive background baseline. This indicates the potential existence of a CME signal and the presence of remaining nonflow background due to two- and three-particle correlations, which are different between the isobars. In this post-blind analysis, we estimate the contributions from those nonflow correlations as a background baseline to $Y$, utilizing the isobar data as well as Heavy Ion Jet Interaction Generator simulations. This baseline is found consistent with the isobar ratio measurement, and an upper limit of 10% at 95% confidence level is extracted for the CME fraction in the charge separation measurement in isobar collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Angular distributions of charged particles relative to jet axes are studied in $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as a function of the jet orientation with respect to the event plane. This differential study tests the expected path-length dependence of energy loss experienced by a hard-scattered parton as it traverses the hot and dense medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. A second-order event plane is used in the analysis as an experimental estimate of the reaction plane formed by the collision impact parameter and the beam direction. Charged-particle jets with $15 < p_{\rm T, jet} <$ 20 and $20 < p_{\rm T, jet} <$ 40 GeV/$c$ were reconstructed with the anti-$k_{\rm T}$ algorithm with radius parameter setting of (R=0.4) in the 20-50\% centrality bin to maximize the initial-state eccentricity of the interaction region. The reaction plane fit method is implemented to remove the flow-modulated background with better precision than prior methods. Yields and widths of jet-associated charged-hadron distributions are extracted in three angular bins between the jet axis and the event plane. The event-plane (EP) dependence is further quantified by ratios of the associated yields in different EP bins. No dependence on orientation of the jet axis with respect to the event plane is seen within the uncertainties in the kinematic regime studied. This finding is consistent with a similar experimental observation by ALICE in $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collision data.

Abstract

We report the first measurements of cumulants, up to $4^{th}$ order, of deuteron number distributions and proton-deuteron correlations in Au+Au collisions recorded by the STAR experiment in phase-I of Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Deuteron cumulants, their ratios, and proton-deuteron mixed cumulants are presented for different collision centralities covering a range of center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$~=~7.7 to 200~GeV. It is found that the cumulant ratios at lower collision energies favor a canonical ensemble over a grand canonical ensemble in thermal models. An anti-correlation between proton and deuteron multiplicity is observed across all collision energies and centralities, consistent with the expectation from global baryon number conservation. The UrQMD model coupled with a phase-space coalescence mechanism qualitatively reproduces the collision-energy dependence of cumulant ratios and proton-deuteron correlations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; published in Physics Letters B

Abstract

Global polarizations ($P$) of $\Lambda$ ($\bar{\Lambda}$) hyperons have been observed in non-central heavy-ion collisions. The strong magnetic field primarily created by the spectator protons in such collisions would split the $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ global polarizations ($\Delta P = P_{\Lambda} - P_{\bar{\Lambda}} < 0$). Additionally, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts topological charge fluctuations in vacuum, resulting in a chirality imbalance or parity violation in a local domain. This would give rise to an imbalance ($\Delta n = \frac{N_{\text{L}} - N_{\text{R}}}{\langle N_{\text{L}} + N_{\text{R}} \rangle} \neq 0$) between left- and right-handed $\Lambda$ ($\bar{\Lambda}$) as well as a charge separation along the magnetic field, referred to as the chiral magnetic effect (CME). This charge separation can be characterized by the parity-even azimuthal correlator ($\Delta\gamma$) and parity-odd azimuthal harmonic observable ($\Delta a_{1}$). Measurements of $\Delta P$, $\Delta\gamma$, and $\Delta a_{1}$ have not led to definitive conclusions concerning the CME or the magnetic field, and $\Delta n$ has not been measured previously. Correlations among these observables may reveal new insights. This paper reports measurements of correlation between $\Delta n$ and $\Delta a_{1}$, which is sensitive to chirality fluctuations, and correlation between $\Delta P$ and $\Delta\gamma$ sensitive to magnetic field in Au+Au collisions at 27 GeV. Abstract

The deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions enables the exploration of the fundamental properties of matter under extreme conditions. Non-central collisions can produce strong magnetic fields on the order of $10^{18}$ Gauss, which offers a probe into the electrical conductivity of the QGP. In particular, quarks and anti-quarks carry opposite charges and receive contrary electromagnetic forces that alter their momenta. This phenomenon can be manifested in the collective motion of final-state particles, specifically in the rapidity-odd directed flow, denoted as $v_1(\mathsf{y})$. Here we present the charge-dependent measurements of $dv_1/d\mathsf{y}$ near midrapidities for $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and $p(\bar{p})$ in Au+Au and isobar ($_{44}^{96}$Ru+$_{44}^{96}$Ru and $_{40}^{96}$Zr+$_{40}^{96}$Zr) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 200 GeV, and in Au+Au collisions at 27 GeV, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The combined dependence of the $v_1$ signal on collision system, particle species, and collision centrality can be qualitatively and semi-quantitatively understood as several effects on constituent quarks. While the results in central events can be explained by the $u$ and $d$ quarks transported from initial-state nuclei, those in peripheral events reveal the impacts of the electromagnetic field on the QGP. Our data put valuable constraints on the electrical conductivity of the QGP in theoretical calculations.

Abstract

The polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons along the beam direction has been measured relative to the second and third harmonic event planes in isobar Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. This is the first experimental evidence of the hyperon polarization by the triangular flow originating from the initial density fluctuations. The amplitudes of the sine modulation for the second and third harmonic results are comparable in magnitude, increase from central to peripheral collisions, and show a mild $p_T$ dependence. The azimuthal angle dependence of the polarization follows the vorticity pattern expected due to elliptic and triangular anisotropic flow, and qualitatively disagree with most hydrodynamic model calculations based on thermal vorticity and shear induced contributions. The model results based on one of existing implementations of the shear contribution lead to a correct azimuthal angle dependence, but predict centrality and $p_T$ dependence that still disagree with experimental measurements. Thus, our results provide stringent constraints on the thermal vorticity and shear-induced contributions to hyperon polarization. Abstract

We report a new measurement of the production of electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays (HFEs) at mid-rapidity ($|y|<$ 0.7) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. Invariant yields of HFEs are measured for the transverse momentum range of $3.5 < p_{\rm T} < 9$ GeV/$c$ in various configurations of the collision geometry. The HFE yields in head-on Au+Au collisions are suppressed by approximately a factor of 2 compared to that in $p$+$p$ collisions scaled by the average number of binary collisions, indicating strong interactions between heavy quarks and the hot and dense medium created in heavy-ion collisions. Comparison of these results with models provides additional tests of theoretical calculations of heavy quark energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract

We report on new measurements of elliptic flow ($v_2$) of electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays at mid-rapidity ($|y|<0.8$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 27 and 54.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. Heavy-flavor decay electrons ($e^{\rm HF}$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 54.4 GeV exhibit a non-zero $v_2$ in the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) region of $p_{\rm T}<$ 2 GeV/$c$ with the magnitude comparable to that at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV. The measured $e^{\rm HF}$ $v_2$ at 54.4 GeV is also consistent with the expectation of their parent charm hadron $v_2$ following number-of-constituent-quark scaling as other light and strange flavor hadrons at this energy. These suggest that charm quarks gain significant collectivity through the evolution of the QCD medium and may reach local thermal equilibrium in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=54.4$ GeV. The measured $e^{\rm HF}$ $v_2$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=$ 27 GeV is consistent with zero within large uncertainties. The energy dependence of $v_2$ for different flavor particles ($\pi,\phi,D^{0}/e^{\rm HF}$) shows an indication of quark mass hierarchy in reaching thermalization in high-energy nuclear collisions., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Cases of IBD-associated AA have been reported in Japan, India, and Canada, but rarely in China. Herein, we present the case of a Chinese patient with IBD-associated AAs and review the literature on AA with underlying IBD. We report the case of a 48-year-old male patient with multiple AAs on his left hand and lungs who was successfully treated with prednisone. He had undergone cutaneous abscess incision and drainage twice in the previous 2 years. The patient presented to our hospital with ulcerative colitis and pain in the dorsum of the left hand. Pus from his hand and blood cultures revealed sterile cutaneous abscesses. Chest computed tomography examination during hospitalization revealed a lung abscess. The AA was unresponsive to cefotiam or cefoperazone-sulbactam. The patient’s left hand and lung conditions did not improve until prednisone was administered. The patient was followed up as an outpatient for 3 months and recovered without any clinical symptoms. We retrieved 17 cases of IBD-associated AA from the literature. None of the patients showed evidence of infection and failed antibiotic treatment, and all improved with corticosteroid use. AA may be an extra-intestinal manifestation of IBD. Effective medications include corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents. This study aimed to explore the association between the Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio and the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) with the 90-day outcomes of AIS.Methods: A total of 2011 AIS patients with a 3-month follow-up were enrolled in the present study from January 2017 to July 2021. Multivariate logistic regression modeling was performed to analyze the relationship between Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio, PNI, and AIS poor outcomes. The mediating effect between the three was analyzed using the Bootstrap method with PNI as the mediating variable.Results: Among the 2011 included AIS patients, 20.3% had a poor outcome. Patients were categorized according to quartiles of Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio and PNI. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that the fourth Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio quartile had poorer outcomes than the first quartile (OR 1.75,95%CL 1.21– 2.53, P=0.003), and the fourth PNI quartile exhibited a lower risk of poor outcomes than the first quartile (OR 0.40, 95%CL 0.27– 0.61, P< 0.001). PNI displayed a significant partially mediating effect (21.4%) between the Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio and poor AIS outcomes.Conclusion: The Apo B/Apo A-1 ratio is a risk factor for poor AIS outcomes, whereas PNI acts as a protective factor. This study aimed to develop a practical nomogram for personalized IHM risk prediction in ischemic stroke patients.Methods: A retrospective study of 422 ischemic stroke patients (April 2020 - December 2021) from Chongqing Medical University’s First Affiliated Hospital was conducted, with patients divided into training (n=295) and validation (n=127) groups. Data on demographics, comorbidities, stroke risk factors, and lab results were collected. Stroke severity was assessed using NIHSS, and stroke types were classified by TOAST criteria. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was employed for predictor selection and nomogram construction, with evaluation through ROC curves, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis.Results: LASSO regression and multivariate logistic regression identified four independent IHM predictors: age, admission NIHSS score, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) diagnosis, and white blood cell count (WBC). A highly accurate nomogram based on these variables exhibited excellent predictive performance, with AUCs of 0.958 (training) and 0.962 (validation), sensitivities of 93.2% and 95.7%, and specificities of 93.1% and 90.9%, respectively. Calibration curves and decision curve analysis validated its clinical applicability.Conclusion: Age, admission NIHSS score, COPD history, and WBC were identified as independent IHM predictors in ischemic stroke patients. The developed nomogram demonstrated high predictive accuracy and practical utility for mortality risk estimation. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified risk factors associated with CSA-AKI. Subsequently, the CSA-AKI nomogram model was developed using R software. Predictive performance was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC). Internal validation was performed through the Bootstrap method with 1000 repeated samples. Additionally, decision curve analysis (DCA) assessed the clinical applicability of the model.Results: Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that being male, age ≥ 50 years, operation time ≥ 290 minutes, postoperative plasma suPAR at 2 hours, and preoperative left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were independent risk factors for CSA-AKI. Employing these variables as predictive factors, a nomogram model was constructed, an ROC curve was generated, and the AUC was computed as 0.817 (95% CI 0.726– 0.907). The calibration curve indicated the accuracy of the model, and the results of DCA demonstrated that the model could benefit the majority of patients.Conclusion: Being male, age ≥ 50 years, operation time ≥ 290 minutes, low preoperative LVEF, and elevated plasma suPAR at 2 hours are independent risk factors for CSA-AKI. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays an important role in mediating emotional and cognitive processes and analgesia. This study investigated the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and effective connectivity (EC) of NAc and its subregions in cLBP.Methods: Thirty-four cLBP patients and 34 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Seed-based rsFC and Dynamic Causal Modelling (DCM) were used to examine the alteration of the rsFC and EC of the NAc.Results: Our results showed that the cLBP group had increased rsFC of the bilateral NAc-left superior frontal cortex (SFC), orbital frontal cortex (OFC), left angular gyrus, the left NAc-bilateral middle temporal gyrus, as well as decreased rsFC of left NAc-left supramarginal gyrus, right precentral gyrus, left cerebellum, brainstem (medulla oblongata), and right insula pathways compared with the HC; the results of the subregions were largely consistent with the whole NAc. In addition, the rsFC of the left NAc-left SFC was negatively correlated with Hamilton’s Depression Scale (HAMD) scores (r = − 0.402, p = 0.018), and the rsFC of left NAc-OFC was positively correlated with present pain intensity scores (r = 0.406, p = 0.017) in the cLBP group. DCM showed that the cLBP group showed significantly increased EC from the left cerebellum to the right NAc (p = 0.012) as compared with HC.Conclusion: Overall, our findings demonstrate aberrant rsFC and EC between NAc and regions that are associated with emotional regulation and cognitive processing in individuals with cLBP, underscoring the pivotal roles of emotion and cognition in cLBP.Keywords: low back pain, nucleus accumbens, resting-state functional connectivity, dynamic causal modelling

However, the specific biological role of CD19(+) target cells, which exert antitumor immunity against some solid tumors, remains to be elucidated.Methods: We collected information regarding the level of CD19 mRNA and protein expression from various databases including The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER), Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx), and Human Protein Atlas (HPA) for both tumor and normal samples. To evaluate the patient’s prognosis according to CD19 expression, a Kaplan-Meier (KM) analysis and univariate Cox regression were performed. Furthermore, using the Estimation of Stromal and Immune Cells in Malignant Tumor Tissues Using the Expression Data (ESTIMATE) algorithm, we estimated the ratio of immune cells infiltrating malignant tumor tissues. Afterward, the GSCALite repository was employed to evaluate the vulnerability of tumors expressing CD19 to drugs used in chemotherapy. To validate the results in clinical samples of certain cancer types, immunohistochemistry was then performed.Results: Most tumor types exhibited CD19 expression differently, apart from colon adenocarcinoma (COAD). The early diagnostic value of CD19 has been demonstrated in 9 different tumor types, and the overexpression of CD19 has the potential to extend the survival duration of patients. Multiple tumors showed a positive correlation between CD19 expression and tumor mutation burden (TMB), microsatellite instability (MSI), and ESTIMATE score. Furthermore, a direct association was discovered between the expression of CD19 and the infiltration of immune cells, particularly in cases of breast invasive carcinoma (BRCA). Abstract

Density fluctuations near the QCD critical point can be probed via an intermittency analysis in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report the first measurement of intermittency in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{_{NN}}}$ = 7.7-200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The scaled factorial moments of identified charged hadrons are analyzed at mid-rapidity and within the transverse momentum phase space. We observe a power-law behavior of scaled factorial moments in Au$+$Au collisions and a decrease in the extracted scaling exponent ($\nu$) from peripheral to central collisions. The $\nu$ is consistent with a constant for different collisions energies in the mid-central (10-40\%) collisions. Moreover, the $\nu$ in the 0-5\% most central Au$+$Au collisions exhibits a non-monotonic energy dependence that reaches a possible minimum around $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{_{NN}}}$ = 27 GeV. Abstract

This paper presents a systematic design procedure for a wide-area damping controller (WADC) employing Energy Storage Systems (ESSs). The WADC is aimed at enhancing the damping of multiple inter-area modes in a large scale power system. Firstly, geometric measures of controllability and obsevability are used to select the control locations for ESSs and most effective stabilizing signals, respectively. Then, the WADC coordinates these signals to achieve multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) controllers with the least Frobenius norm feedback gain matrix. The simulation results of frequency and time domains verify the effectiveness of the wide-area damping controller for various operating conditions. Furthermore, the robustness of the wide-area damping controller is also tested with respect to time delay and uncertainty of models.
