This cross-sectional study with an open-ended manner aimed (1) to evaluate the environmental risk perception levels of mothers having at least one child and living in Adana and (2) to determine their awareness of the risk factors in their environment. Of mothers, 30.2% did not know the concept of environmental risk factor. Most frequent perceived risks were violence (17%), air pollution (15.5%) and undefined pollution (15%). The most common mentioned problems in their environment were air pollution (9.9%), violence (7.9%) and municipal service problems (8.4%). Mothers living in the urban area reported more violence, air pollution and undefined pollution as environmental threats than those living in the countryside. The place of residence, the education level of the mother and the number of people in the house significantly were related with the risk perception. The aim was to evaluate the changes in aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) and ochratoxin A (OTA) levels in human breast milk (HBM) during the first five postpartum months according to the sampling season in a cohort study from Şanlıurfa. From 78 healthy lactating mothers, HBM was taken at the 5–14 days postpartum (D5-14) and the 6th and 18th weeks postpartum (W6 and W18). Mycotoxin levels were analyzed with competitive ELISA. Generalized Estimating Equations with repeated measures (three-correlation matrix dimension) revealed a significantly higher mean AFM1 level at W6 than that on D5-14. AFM1 and OTA levels in winter and spring were considerably higher than that in summer and autumn. Maternal smoke exposure, body mass index, history of moldy food exposure, birth order, and breastfeeding type did not influence the results. Whilst season had a marked effect on the milk levels of both analytes, lactation stage affected AFM1 more notable than OTA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, three conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)-producing strains of Lactobacillus were cultured up to 36 in reconstituted skim milk powder (10%) supplemented with 2000 pg/ml of free linoleic acid (LA) and various concentrations of Tween 80. During the incubation total CLA levels in the culture supernatants were determined by UV-spectrophotometry. The CLA levels significantly (P<0.05) increased with the addition of 5 and 20 mg/ml Tween 80. However, increasing Tween 80 concentration from 20 to 40 mg/ml did not appear to enhance CLA levels Similar increase patterns were observed in the growth rate and CLA production of Lactobacillus strains during the incubation. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of dietary yeast cell wall (YCW) on performance, egg quality, some blood parameters and humoral immune response of laying hens during 26 wks period. For this purpose a total of 225 Hyline Brown laying hens, 39 wks of age, were allocated to one control group and four treatment groups. Basal diet was supplemented with YCW derived from bakers yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (InteMOS) at the level of 1, 2, 3 and 4 g/kg in the diets of the first, second, third and fourth treatment groups, respectively. Dietary treatments did not significantly affect body weight, feed intake, egg production, egg weight, feed conversion, and egg internal and external quality characteristics. YCW supplementation at the level of 1 and 2 g/kg decreased egg yolk cholesterol level as mg per g yolk (P < 0.05). Blood serum levels of cholesterol and triglyceride were decreased with the dietary inclusion of YCW at the level of 2, 3 and 4 g/kg (P < 0.01). Dietary YCW supplementation increased antibody titres to SRBC (P < 0.01). As a result dietary YCW at the level of 1 and 2 g/kg had beneficial effects in the production of low cholesterol eggs and improvement in humoral immunity response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of dietary hazelnut meal supplementation on the meat composition of quails. A total of 312 one-day-old Japanese quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were divided into 6 equal groups. Six different levels of hazelnut meal (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%) were included in their diets. At the end of the 5-week experiment, 12 quails (6 male and 6 female) were slaughtered from each group at random. The levels of dry matter, protein, fat, ash and some mineral elements of the meat were determined. The values of protein, ash, energy, calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc in the meat were not influenced by dietary treatment or sex. Significant differences (P < 0.05) in dry matter content of the meat between the control group and the groups fed 15%, 20% and 25% hazelnut meal and in fat content between the control group and the group fed 20% hazelnut meal were detected. However, when analysis of male and female carcass meat was performed separately, there were no significant differences in dry matter or fat content.
